LTC Charles W. Norton, Jr. USAF, Retired

Pendleton, SC - LTC Charles Wesley Norton, Jr. USAF, Retired, age 93, husband of Doris S. Norton, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2016 at Keowee Place. 

Born in Mullins, he was the son of the late Charles Wesley and Mary Lou Smith Norton. He was a graduate of Ohio State University and was a retired U.S. Air Force Fighter Pilot with 30 years service. LTC Norton was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church. 

In addition to his wife, survivors include five children, Charles W. Norton III and wife, Brenda of Zuni, VA, Susanne Norton of Pendleton, David Rippetoe Norton and wife, Peggy of Jacksonville, FL, Robert Houser Norton and wife, Betty of Haymarket, VA, and Mary Lou Billingsly and husband, Mike of Pendleton; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a sister, Ann Ramsey of Durham, NC.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 28, at Mount Tabor Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Philip Blankenship. Burial, with full military honors conducted by the U.S. Air Force, will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Monday at the church. The family is at the home of Mary Lou and Mike Billingsley, 109 Kenneth Court, Pendleton, SC.

Dean R. Scarborough

Anderson, SC - Dean R. Scarborough, 92, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016. 

Born February 29, 1924 in Athens, Georgia, he was the son of the late D.B. and Ila Dean Scarborough. He was a longtime member of New Prospect Baptist Church, Anderson. He retired after 30 years from Gerrish Milliken Mill, Pendleton and was also a gentleman farmer.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, enlisting on October 6, 1942, serving on LST 338 throughout most of the war, and on LST 279 near the end of the war. He served in the European Theater, including Sicily and was at Omaha Beach on D-Day. 

He is survived by his wife, Lena Owens Scarborough of the home; a daughter, Beth Scarborough of Charlotte, NC; a son, Mark Scarborough and wife, Chellis of Anderson; five granddaughters, Krissi Mims and husband, Thomas of Anderson, Shaye Messenger and husband, Kyle of Greenville, Whitney Smith and husband, Thomas of Anderson, Alyssa Ammon and Katharine Ammon, both of Charlotte, NC; six great grandchildren, Hunter and Falynn Mims of Anderson, Seth and Isabelle Messenger of Greenville, and Emma and Sadie Smith of Anderson; and a brother, Joe Scarborough of Anderson. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at New Prospect Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Tom Turner, Rev. Jimmy Watt and Rev. Kyle Messenger. Burial, with military honors, will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service. The family is at the home of his son, 2133 Scarborough Road, Anderson.

Brent Dickerson

Anderson, SC - Russell Brent Dickerson, 40, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2016. 

Born in Anderson, he was a graduate of Westside High School and Tri-County Technical College with a degree in Industrial Electronics.

Survivors include his parents, Joe Bill and Kim Dickerson; his brother, Marty Dickerson and wife, Monica; his sister, Devin Dickerson; his grandmother, Deree McClain Dickerson; two nephews, Jacob and Carter Dickerson, all of Anderson; companion, Amanda Johnson of Elberton, Georgia; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 28, at New Prospect Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Tony Smith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 until 10:45 a.m. Monday at the church. The family is at the home of his parents, 2124 Karen Lane, Anderson.

Johnny Bernhardt

Anderson, SC - John Robert Bernhardt, husband of Janice Tinsley Bernhardt, passed away Monday, March 14, 2016 at Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late John Sullivan and Helen Cecil Bernhardt. He worked in his family owned business, Parts & Supply Auto Store, for many years and later as a Realtor with Keller Williams. Mr. Bernhardt was an avid runner and was a founding member of the Anderson Roadrunners. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and attended NewSpring Church. 

Survivors include his wife, Janice; son, Chad Bernhardt; daughter, Molly Bernhardt Woods and husband, Kevin; two grandchildren, Abby and Owen Woods; two sisters, Jean Vaughn and husband, Gus and Betty Ashworth, all of Anderson; several nieces and nephews and his pet, “Miss Ellie”. 

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2016, at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Dr. L. Thomas Richie. The family will receive friends at the mortuary following the service. A family burial was held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Dorothy Tate McMillan

Dorothy Louise Tate McMillan of Panama City Beach, Florida, died Monday, March 21, 2016, at Community Health and Rehabilitation Center in Panama City, Florida.

Dot was born in Iva, South Carolina and was a 1944 graduate of Girls’ High School in Anderson, South Carolina.  She was the daughter of the late Ruth Cleo Eisenman and Curtis Leon Tate. Her husband, Lonnie Malcolm McMillan, Jr., and her sister, Miriam Victorine Tate Plotnik, predeceased her.   Surviving are her sister, Frances Cynthia Tate Presher of Columbia, South Carolina, and her nieces, Cynthia, Cassandra, Emily Kathleen, and Anna Serena.  

For many years, Dot worked for the United States Naval Oceanographic Office in Suitland, Maryland, and the Naval Command Oceanography at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.  After retiring to Panama City Beach, Florida, she became very involved in the Regency Towers Condominium Owners’ Association and in Bay County Council matters.  She was a lifelong Baptist, a member of First Baptist Church of Panama City, and she began a weekly winter Bible study at Regency Towers that is still active.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, at Old Silver Brook Cemetery in Anderson, South Carolina.  A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 2, at 2:00 p.m. at Regency Towers Condominium, 5801 Thomas Drive, Panama City Beach, Florida.

Lois Thomas

Anderson, SC - Lois Irene Davis Thomas, 83, widow of E.V. Thomas, made her journey to Heaven Wednesday, March 23, 2016. 

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Roy A. and Millie Loudermilk Davis. In her earlier years she enjoyed her flower garden and in later years she loved feeding and watching the birds. Lois had a beautiful soprano voice and was remembered by her children and family singing in church. Although she will be greatly missed here, she has reached her final destination to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Temple. 

Survivors include three sons, Drew Hudgens of Starr, Richard Hudgens and wife, Cindy of Anderson, and Steve Hudgens and wife, Janie of Starr; one daughter, Millie Stevenson and husband, Michael of Starr; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Jo Swinford of Anderson. 

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy L. Davis and a sister, Jackie Fellers. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Sam Duncan. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Family members are at their respective homes.

Don R. Novak

Townville, SC - Don Robert Novak, 67, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in New London, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Zigmund J. and Betty Wiech Novak. He was a retired vendor from Oconee Nuclear Plant. Mr. Novak was of the Catholic faith. 

Survivors include his wife, Carol Nimmons Novak of the home; and two sisters, Donna Essex and Dawn Alvirez, both of Arkansas.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2016, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson.

Jim Wilson

Jim Wilson died unexpectedly Saturday at is home in Anderson.

Jim was a life-long active member of the community, well-known for his charity and kindness. 

He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Tina Wilson, sons Greg Wilson and Jeff Wilson, (and was preceded in death by son Brian), daughter-in-laws Deborah Wilson and Karen Wilson, grandchildren Julia Wilson, Luke Wilson, Kaitlin Wilson and Sara Wilson, brother Don Wilson and sister Hilda Wilson. He was also preceded in death by brother Garrison Wilson, John D. Wilson, sister Mary Doris Craig, and parents Guy and Christine Wilson. 

Born in Anderson County, he was owner of Jim Wilson Realty and Construction and Carolina Appraisers, a prolific songwriter, a beloved music minister of a number of Upstate churches over the past 60 years, an active deacon and long-time member of Anderson First Baptist Church. He was also a familiar and friendly face to many home-bound folks in the area, many of whom he visited regularly, often with a home-cooked meal.

Jim previous served as a plant manager for Milliken for more than 20 years. 

A 1957 Clemson University graduate, where he was a trombone player member of the marching band, He also served in active duty as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army and later in the U.S. Army Reserves.

In a Father’s Day tribute published in 2013, Jim’s son Greg Wilson wrote: 

“God put music in my father’s heart. Literally. Since his childhood on the farm where he learned to play piano (initially through a mail order course that he still has some of the intimidating books that made up those lessons), until this very day, his heart beats fastest and best when he is either with his family, his music or both. Many in churches across the area, where he led choirs, sang with groups or alone, and performed his own songs sitting at the piano singing, are the better because they came in contact with him. 

Some of my best memories are of him sitting alone at the piano at home, playing and singing just for the pure joy of it. We should all find such a place of joy in our lives.  

And his love for Jesus, my mother, his kids and their spouses, and his grandchildren flows out like music. It is lyrical, new stanzas always being written, the tune continually being embellished. And all of us were blessed to have so many good years together.“ 

Everyone who knew Jim misses him already.

Norman Lamar Boggs

Norman Lamar Boggs, Sr., 86, passed away Monday, February 22, 2016 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Anderson and reared in Honea Path, he was the son of the late Floyd and Daisy Haynie Boggs. He was founder and President of Boggs Builders, Inc. and Norman L. Boggs Real Estate. He was a Charter Member of the Realtors Association of Anderson and a Charter Member and Past President of the Anderson Homebuilders Association. Mr. Boggs was a member of Centre Lodge #37 A.F.M. in Honea Path where he had received his 60 year pin. He was also a member of the Hejaz Shrine. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and member of the Tom Allen Bible Class.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Faye Long Boggs of the home; son, Norman L. Boggs, Jr. and wife, Debbie of Anderson; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother, Thomas “Buddy” Boggs of Anderson; and three sisters, Dorothy Cooley of Honea Path, Carolyn Harris of Ware Shoals and Julia Roberts of York. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Edward Boggs and two brothers, James and Arthur Boggs. 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary. Services and burial will be private.

Bobby N. Stowe

Anderson, SC - Bobby Nelson Stowe, 83, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, February 14, 2016. He also joins the love of his life, Betty Kay Stowe, his wife of 57 years.

Born in Commerce, Georgia, he was the son of the late John P. and Mary Alice Yarborough Stowe. Mr. Stowe served in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from textiles and enjoyed selling at the Surfside Market for many years. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his two daughters, Valesa Attaway and husband, Mike, of Jefferson, Georgia and Valita Jenkins and husband, Ronnie, of Anderson, SC. Also surviving are his three grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Nikole Walker of Jefferson, Georgia, Travis Jenkins, M.D. and wife, Shirin, of Wilmington, NC and Derick Jenkins, M.D. and wife, Livia, of Richmond, Virginia; brother, Ken Stowe; and two sisters, Joyce Merck and Jan Gilliam. 

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Stowe. 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Ray Buchanan. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pat Wilson

Patsy Ramey Wilson, 73, beloved wife of Donald "Duck" Wilson for 54 wonderful years, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Rainey Hospice House. 

Mrs. Wilson was born in Anderson County and was the daughter of the late Logan and Nettie Parnell Ramey.  She was retired from the Anderson County Assessor's office and owned her own business, Wilson Certified Appraisers. She was a member of Bishop Branch Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Perry Wilson and his wife, Suzanne of Niceville, FL and Tim Wilson of Anderson; one daughter, Kathy Phinney and her husband, Thomas of Pendleton; grandchildren, Brandon and Bailey Phinney, Katie, Kristin, Kerianne, and Kassidy Wilson, Hayley, Nicholas and Lauren Rinke; and one great-granddaughter, Grace Sympson; nephews, Keavin and Brian Ramey and niece, Kim Drafts.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Logan Douglas Ramey and her grandparents, Raleigh and Anna Lee Ramey, and Leroy and L. E. Parnell.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home with burial to follow in Memory Gardens, Clemson.

Charles Moses Jowers

Charles Moses Jowers, CLU, aged 79, of Anderson is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jane Fleming Jowers, as well as his son, Dr. Dennis W. Jowers, and his wife Judy of Tacoma, Washington. After a private burial, the funeral will be held at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Anderson, SC at 2 p.m. Saturday.

A faithful member of St. John’s and a member of Optimists International for 50 years, Mr. Jowers participated extensively in civic affairs, holding office in the Republican Party of Greenville County, Richland County, and Anderson County. During his tenure as chairman of the Anderson County Republican Party (1980–1984), the first Republicans to serve in countywide office in Anderson since Reconstruction were elected. He also oversaw Anderson’s first Republican primary.He served as President of the Whitehall Elementary School PTA and as a member of the PTA’s district board.

A veteran, Mr. Jowers served in the 82^nd Airborne Division. He also belonged to Hiram Lodge no. 68. Having graduated from South Georgia College and studied at Mercer University, he worked in the insurance industry for forty years. After serving in a managerial capacity with Prudential Insurance in Greenville, Columbia, and Anderson, he founded and maintained his own business, Employee Benefit Planners, Inc., from 1979 until 2003.
