Lila Mae Hanks

Anderson, SC - Lila Mae Fisher Hanks, 91, widow of Marshall W. Hanks, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Abbeville County, she was the daughter of the late Reynold A. and Neva Ashley Fisher. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women (UMW) of the church.

She is survived by her nephew, Ronald L. Fisher and wife, Melissa, of Columbia.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lamar and Ernest Fisher. 

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ebenezer United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Kempie Shepard and Rev. Charlie Brookshire. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Sunday at the church.

James H. “Jack” Kelley

James H. “Jack” Kelley, 87 of Anderson SC passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at his home.

Born in Iva, SC, he was the son of the late George Austin and Marie Burton Kelley, the spouse to Mildred Kelley, he was a Brick Mason for 53 years around Anderson, retired from AB Roberts Construction and was a Veteran of the US Navy.

In addition to his spouse, he is survived by his sons: James, George, Robert and David Kelley, 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a son: Michael Kelley, a daughter: Carmen Henderson, brothers: George, Ray and Goodman Kelley, and sisters: Mozelle Pope and Grace Watts.

Funeral services will be held with Military Rites at MJ Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery at 3pm on Friday, October 30, 2015 with Revs James Strickland and Jim McManus officiating.

The family will be at the home.

Corporal Williams Edward “Will” Martin

Anderson, SC - Corporal Williams Edward Martin, 28, husband of Morgan Johnson Martin, passed away Friday, October 23, 2015.

Born February 8, 1987 in Anderson, he was a graduate of T.L. Hanna High School. Will was deployed and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He was the service manager with STEC, Inc. Will served on the Board of New Foundations Home for Children and was an active member of the Electric City Young Marines. He was also an active member of Concord Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Morgan J. Martin; daughter, Baylor Evans Martin; mother, Amy L. Martin of Anderson; father, Edward “Eddie” Martin of Charleston; sisters, Blair Elizabeth Martin of Charlotte, NC and Erin Alexandra Martin of Charleston; maternal grandparents, Gary A. and Lillian Lawrence of Clover; father and mother-in-law, Chet and Cindy Johnson of Anderson, and sister-in-law, Layne Evans Johnson of Greenville. 

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Stokes and Sara Martin and a cousin, Michael Stokes Martin.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Concord Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Don Cox. Burial will follow in M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery with Full Military Honors conducted by the Upstate Marines Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Concord Baptist Church. The family is at the home of his mother, 715 Marshall Avenue, Anderson.

Carlisle Suggs

Anderson, SC - Carlisle Suggs, 80, husband of Jeannette C. Suggs, passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Loris, SC, he was the son of the late Erbby and Ruth Durant Suggs. He was a retired sales associate with Havertys Furniture. Mr. Suggs was a member of St. Andrews Parish Baptist Church in Charleston.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannette Suggs of the home; daughter, Theresa Suggs of Johns Island; son, Timothy Suggs and wife, Adrian of Loganville, Ga; stepsons, Alan Farmer of Homer, Ga. and Phillip Farmer of Long Mountain, NC; stepdaughter, Valorie Summer of Buford, Ga.; eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Edwin “Buddy” Suggs; one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Norris. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Nancy Hart Memorial Park in Hartwell, Ga. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary.

Mary Roper

Pendleton, SC - Mary Lois Padgett Roper, 69, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2015 at Pruitt Health Care in Six Mile. 

Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late J.C. and Willene Williams Padgett. She was a graduate of Pendleton High School. Mrs. Roper was a former store clerk at Plez-U which is now Tiger Mart in Clemson.

Survivors include a son, James “Teddy” Atkins and wife, Cecilia of Pendleton; daughter, Shondi Roper of Seneca; five granddaughters; and a brother, Wayne Padgett of Seneca. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Padgett. 

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, October 22, 2015 at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church conducted by Joel Hendricks. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m. Thursday at the church.

John K. Higginbotham, Sr

Anderson, SC - John Keith Higginbotham, Sr., 92, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2015 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Elberton, Ga., he was the son of the late Joe B. and Hattie Gaines Higginbotham. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. Mr. Higginbotham was a graduate of Rutgers University and was a retired banker. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as church treasurer for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Sara C. Higginbotham; and one son, Keith Higginbotham of Columbia. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 17, at Forest Lawn Mausoleum Chapel conducted by Dr. James R. Thomason.

Paul Garvin

Anderson, SC - Paul Matthew Garvin, Jr., 89, died Saturday, October 10, 2015 at his residence. 

Born in Colleton County, he was the eldest son of the late Paul Matthew Garvin, Sr. and Leonie Elizabeth Garris Garvin. He was a graduate of Clemson College. Following graduation, he worked for the college before becoming co-owner of Garvin Truck and Tractor Co. with his brother, Tom. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Garvin was a member of the Anderson Lions Club for 58 years where he served in many capacities including President. He was a faithful member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and the Marshall Fant Sunday School Class. He enjoyed many years serving as an usher. 

Survivors include his wife, Jeanine Shuford Madden Garvin; son, James Robert Garvin and wife, Tori; grandson, Paul Matthew Garvin; step-son, Mark Landon Madden and wife, Eleanor “Sissy” Hunnicutt Madden; two step-grandchildren, Kinsley Anne Bailey and Landon Ford Madden; sister, Miriam (Mickey) Garvin White; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Harrison Garvin and Roberta Long Garvin.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bobbie Jean Darracott Garvin and two brothers, Thomas Earle Garvin and Joe Thurmond Garvin. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dan Batson. Burial will follow in Old Silver Brook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday at Sullivan-King Mortuary. Members of the Anderson Lions Club and Marshall Fant Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Willie Mae Vickery

Anderson, SC - Willie Mae Carnes Vickery, 66, wife of Hank Vickery, passed away Friday, October 9, 2015 at her residence. 

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Henry Kermith and Della Mary Tollison Carnes. She was an employee of White Jones Hardware. 

Survivors include her husband, Hank Vickery of the home; one son, Keith Anthony Vickery and wife, Chelsea of Smith Station, Alabama; two sisters, Shirley Junkins and husband, Butch of Anderson and Linda Landrith of Pendleton; two brothers, Wayne Carnes of Anderson and William Carnes of Sylmar, California; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Pat Giles. 

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park conducted by Rev. Alan Rhodes. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary. The family is at the home of her sister, Shirley Junkins, 208 Maria Drive, Anderson.

Joy Richey Hancock

Anderson, SC - Joy Richey Hancock, 84, widow of Alton W. Hancock, Sr., passed away Monday, September 28, 2015 at NHC of Anderson. 

Born in Pendleton, she was the daughter of the late Donnie and Edna Hall Richey. She retired from AnMed Health as Credit Union Manager. Mrs. Hancock was a dedicated wife and mother and was an active member of Concord Baptist Church as long as her health permitted.

Survivors include three daughters, Yvonne “Sissy” Dziedzicki of North Charleston, Peggy Hancock of Allen, Texas and Sandra H. Hopper of Pendleton; son, John A. Hancock of Suffolk, Virginia; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Jane Bowen of Anderson. 

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Alton W. Hancock, Jr. and a brother, Edsel Richey. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. The family is at the home of Sandra Hopper, 1306 Autun Road, Pendleton.

Louise Wilson Yeargin

Louise Wilson Yeargin, 89, of Timberlake Road, widow of James Lee Yeargin, died Sunday, September 13, 2015 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born April 24, 1926 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Robert Franklin and Charity Black Wilson. She was retired LaFrance Industries after 47 years of service.  Mrs. Yeargin was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. 

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Vinnenberg (Allen Bray) of Anderson and Leisa Boulunger (Brent) of Cartersville GA; one son, Donald Yeargin (Dawn) of Donalds; two grandchildren, Dawn Marie Reed and Amber Rae Yeargin; and four great-grandchildren, Raegan Yeargin , Keelan Kaylor, Chandller Reed and Beckette Reed. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. ­­­Bobby Watson and Dr. Tony Smith.  Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence.

William "Bill" Fant

Anderson, SC - William Barnes Fant, 90, husband of Mildred O. Fant, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2015.

Born May 19, 1925 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Samuel D. and Willie Holcombe Fant. Bill was a retired paint contractor. He was an avid gardener and especially loved flowers. He was a longtime member of the Anderson Elks Lodge, B.P.O.E. #1206 and a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and the Happy Group.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mildred O. Fant of the home; two daughters, Angela Fant and Libby Witt of Anderson; seven grandchildren, Davey Cheek, Alyssa Cheek, Dusty Ross, Josh Ross, Caressa Baker, Nicole Gibson and Craig Witt; ten great grandchildren; and a sister, Linda Eakin of Pennsylvania. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Lannie Gillespie Fant.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Dan Batson. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

Tom Forrester

Piercetown - John Thomas Forrester, Jr., 85, husband of Jackie Ward Forrester, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at his home. 

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late John Thomas and Margie Todd Forrester. He was a graduate of McCormick High School and attended Clemson University. He was a retired insurance agent with Jefferson-Pilot Insurance Company. In retirement, Tom raised Registered Beef Master Cattle. He was an Iptay Representative for many years. He was a member of the Mine Masonic Lodge #117 in McCormick and a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church. 

Survivors include his wife, Jackie Forrester of the home; two daughters, Tomilyn F. Bowen and husband, Don of Anderson and Margaret F. Eaves and husband, Gregory of Piercetown; two sons, Jack Forrester and wife, Sara and John T. Forrester III and wife, Wendy of Piercetown; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 11 at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Gene Burdette. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Friday at the mortuary.
