Joe Horton

Anderson, SC - Josephus Horton, 82, husband of Barbara Hamilton Horton, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2016, at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Columbus, NC, he was the son of the late Walter C. and Nancy Janie Pruitt Horton. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was retired from LaFrance Industries.

He was an avid golfer. Mr. Horton was a member of Zion United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and taught in the K-1 Sunday School Class where he was the much beloved “Mr. Joe”.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; three sons, Robert Horton and wife, Lucy, of Travelers Rest, Derek Horton and wife, Beth and Patrick Horton and wife, Marca, all of Anderson; five grandchildren, Evan Horton, Bailey Horton, Brooke Horton, Chrissie Barbee and husband, Brian, and Perry Pittman and wife, Amy; two great grandsons, Ethan and Jaxson Barbee; and two brothers, Dean Horton of Columbus, NC and John Horton of Landrum. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters and five brothers.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, October 2, at Zion United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Beverly CroweTipton. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Curtis Harold Madden

Anderson, SC - Curtis Harold Madden, 90, passed away Friday, September 2, 2016.

Born in Rome, Georgia, he was the son of the late Daniel Edgar and Effie Wright Madden. Mr. Madden was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a retired engineer at Owens Corning Fiberglass with 33 years service. Mr. Madden volunteered with Meals on Wheels for 17 years. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church and was a former member of Beaverdam Baptist Church in Fair Play where he served as a Deacon, Training Union Director and Sunday School teacher. 

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Arnetta Meredith Madden; daughter, Carole Madden Lockaby of Anderson; three grandchildren, Curtis Darin Lockaby (Deanna) of Orlando, FL, Susan Lockaby Johnson and Kevin Franklin Lockaby, both of Anderson; ten great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a sister, Doris Marett of Hartwell, GA.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Madden, Jr. and sisters, Sara Alyce Moorhead and Virginia Russell Ihle.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Dr. Don Cox. Burial will follow in Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery, Fair Play. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Monday at the mortuary. The family is at the residence.

Julia “Judy” Holland

Anderson, SC - Mary Julia Hopkins Holland, 75, passed away Friday, August 19, 2016 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Raymond T. and Lucy Connor Hopkins. She attended the Carolina School of Commerce. She was the retired office manager for Dr. John Hunt’s Surgical Office. Judy was an avid golfer and was a member of the Stone Creek Cove Golf Club. She was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, John David Holland and wife, Shannan of Pendleton; daughter, Julia Holland Bunch and husband, Richie of Pendleton; five grandchildren, Haley Pearson, Brandon Pearson and wife, Bobbie, Makenzie Holland, Christin Bunch Shore, and Caroline Bunch Brooks; great granddaughter, Zoie Pearson; and a sister, Harriet Ramey and husband, Johnnie, of Anderson. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Lewis C. Hopkins, Billy Ray Hopkins, Raymond T. Hopkins, Jr., Marshall Lee “Pete” Hopkins, and Toddy Hopkins. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by Rev. C.W. Hicks. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service. The family is at the home of John David and Shannan Holland, 381 Murphy Road, Pendleton.

Cecil Martin

Anderson, SC - Harold Cecil Martin, 89, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late Melvin C. and Inez Hilliard Martin. He was a graduate of Boys High School and attended Clemson College. Mr. Martin served in the U.S. Navy and later joined the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring in 1986 with 42 years service. He retired from Southern Bell with 33 years service. He was a member of Hiram Masonic Lodge, Hejaz Shrine Temple, the V.F.W. and was a former member of the Anderson Elks Lodge, B.P.O.E. #1206. Mr. Martin was a member of First Baptist Church. 

Survivors include his wife, Betty W. Martin; two sons, Patrick Lansing Martin of Knoxville, TN and Carroll Lynn Martin and wife, Brenda Dianne Martin of Pearland, TX; granddaughter, Courtney Martin Mills and husband, John Henry Mills, Jr; and two great grandchildren, John Henry Mills III and Jada Mills.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Deborah N. Martin. 

In accordance with his wishes, no services are planned.

Betty Rogers

Anderson, SC - Betty Potter Rogers, 77, widow of Ernest Ward Rogers, Jr., died Sunday, August 7, 2016. 

Born in New Bern, NC, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Felton and Elizabeth Sadler Potter. She was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College and earned a Masters Degree from Clemson University. Betty began her career teaching Spanish in several schools, retiring from Westside High School. She then founded two businesses, Bean Bag Betty and Rogers Furniture Gallery, which she operated for a number of years.

Survivors include two sons, Ernest W. Rogers III and wife, Jean Ann, David Rogers and wife, Tammy, all of Anderson; five grandchildren, Anna Rogers, Abbie Rapoport and husband, Todd, Ellie Rogers, Emma Rogers, and Ben Rogers; two brothers, Ben Potter and wife, Pat, Denard Potter and wife, Helen, all of Reelsboro, NC; nieces, Angela and Christy; and nephews, Derek and Denard. 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary. A private service for her family will be held Friday. The family will be at the home of Ernest and Jean Ann Rogers.

Mary Gambrell

Anderson, SC - Mary Pauline Murphy Gambrell, 73, passed away Monday, August 8, 2016. 

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late George T. and Margie Nellie Lowe Murphy. She was retired from AnMed Health. Mrs. Gambrell was a member of NewSpring Church. 

Survivors include her husband, Charles L. Gambrell; daughter, Donna Hedden and husband, Tony; son, Darren Gambrell; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Jessica Hedden; three sisters, Linda Murphy, June Brown, and Raye Lawing; and a brother, Joe Murphy, all of Anderson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Keels Murphy and two beloved pets, Nellie and Ginger.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2016, at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Pastor Tom Haren. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. The family is at the residence.

Roger Dale McAlister

Anderson, SC - Roger Dale McAlister, 68, husband of Cathy Whitworth McAlister, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016, at the Rainey Hospice House 

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late Sam Kade and Levia Martin McAlister. He was retired from AnMed Health Medical Center. Mr. McAlister was of the Baptist faith. 

Survivors include his wife, Cathy; five daughters, Kelley Cournoyer (Michael), Teresa Maleski (Paul), Charlotte Whitten (Brent), Nicole Ballard, and Nicki Fleming (Jason); grandchildren, Brantly, Chloe, Keylee, Brogan, Michael, Caleb, and Sierra; special friend and brother, Bobby Massey; loving uncle and aunt, Clarence and Jean Martin; and a very special part of the family, Rusty Branyon. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Jack and Sammy McAlister. 

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. The family is at the home of Teresa and Paul Maleski, 1016 Silo Lane, Anderson.

Margaret Weisner Ellison

Anderson, SC - Margaret Eleanor Weisner Ellison, 77, loving wife of 56 years to Lewis M. Ellison, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 3, at her home. 

Born in Piedmont, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Harold and Martha Adice Weisner. She formerly worked at Greenville Hospital System and later was bookkeeper for Valco, Inc. for over 25 years. She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. 

Survivors include her husband, Lewis, of the home; one son, Randall L. Ellison (Ronda) of Easley; daughter, Kimberly E. Cochran (James) of Anderson; three grandchildren, Jamie Cochran, Mary Margaret Ellison and Will Ellison; two brothers, Jerry and Rhett Weisner; and one sister, Judy W. McAbee. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a twin sister and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, at Shiloh United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Perry Evatt. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary. The family is at the residence.

Florence Moore Tucker

Anderson, SC - Florence Moore “Betsy” Tucker, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2016, at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Alfred L. and Allyce C. Moore. She was a graduate of Stratford College of Virginia and attended the Art Institute of Chicago and the Ringling Brothers School of Art in Florida. Mrs. Tucker was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. 

Survivors include her husband, Dr. William L. Cheezem of Clemson; son, John W. Tucker, Jr. and his wife, Kimberly of Anderson; two granddaughters, Annaliza Moore Tucker and Riley Frances Tucker; and a brother-in-law, Lawrence L. Tucker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John W. Tucker, Sr. and a son, Michael Leffell Tucker. 

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Central Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. David J. Bailey. Burial will follow in Old Silver Brook Cemetery. The family is at the home of John and Kimberly Tucker. 

The family would like to express their appreciation to AnMed Health Medical Center, 4- Center staff, Brookdale Rehabilitation staff as well as Hospice of the Upstate staff for their kindness and compassion in the care of Mrs. Tucker.

Sybil Snider

Anderson, SC - Sybil Meredith Snider, 75, wife of Billy J. Snider, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Gertrude Davis Meredith. She was an employee of Grace’s Coffee House for 35 years. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Sybil was a member of North Anderson Pentecostal Holiness Church. 

Survivors include her husband, Billy J. Snider of the home; three sons, Marion Snider and wife, Christie and Mitchell Snider and wife, Patty, all of Anderson and Michael Snider and wife, Kelly of Honea Path; thirteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; four sisters, Ruby McCollum, Shirley Schrotter, Barbara Reese and Linda G. Meredith; three brothers, Preston Meredith, Edward Meredith and Junior Meredith; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Mark Snider. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. J. Floyd Stansell, Rev. Jordan Evans and Rev. Sam Duncan. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81. Julia Hicks

Anderson – Julia Helen Hayes Hicks, 88, of 2613 Lane Avenue, widow of Hugh William Hicks, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016. 

Born January 12, 1928 in Boone, NC, she was the daughter of the late George H. and Rosa Coffey Hayes. Julia was a retired telephone operator with Southern Bell with 30 years of service. She was of the Episcopal faith.   

Surviving are her son, Wayne “Butch” Hicks and his wife, Wanda of Anderson; grandson, Jeremy Kyah Hicks; great grandson, Ashton Hicks and brother, Howell Hayes of Boone, NC. She also was survived by grandchildren of the heart, Heather Grigg, Chris Scoggins, Nicole Simpson, Drayton Epps, Anna Epps and Kayla Massey. She was preceded in death by ten brothers and sisters. 

A graveside service will be held at 1pm Tuesday, April 19, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Father Jack Hardaway officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Don Ross

Liberty, South Carolina - Don Whitaker Ross, 64, passed away Friday, April 1, 2016 at his residence. 

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late Jack Ross and Eleanor Martin Ross. He was a graduate of T.L. Hanna High School and attended Clemson University. He served as athletic manager for Hanna Basketball in 1967 and 1968, both state championship teams. While at Clemson, he served as athletic manager for the football, basketball and soccer teams. He was a Cowboy, team roper and hard working farmer. Don served as manager for Windover Farms in Liberty for 40 years. He was an avid motorcyclist and enjoyed striper fishing and shooting pool. He is remembered by family and friends for his generosity. 

Survivors include two sons, Josh Ross and Dusty Ross of Liberty; three brothers, Jack Louie Ross, John Baylis Ross and James Henry Ross, all of Anderson; one sister, Alice Emeline Ross Maggalousis of Greece; former wife, Angela Fant of Anderson; and two step children, Alyssa Cheek of Anderson and Davey Cheek of Atlanta, Georgia.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Dan Batson. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary. The family is at the home of Mildred Fant, 220 Middleton Shores, Anderson.
