Dean R. Scarborough

Anderson, SC - Dean R. Scarborough, 92, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016. 

Born February 29, 1924 in Athens, Georgia, he was the son of the late D.B. and Ila Dean Scarborough. He was a longtime member of New Prospect Baptist Church, Anderson. He retired after 30 years from Gerrish Milliken Mill, Pendleton and was also a gentleman farmer.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, enlisting on October 6, 1942, serving on LST 338 throughout most of the war, and on LST 279 near the end of the war. He served in the European Theater, including Sicily and was at Omaha Beach on D-Day. 

He is survived by his wife, Lena Owens Scarborough of the home; a daughter, Beth Scarborough of Charlotte, NC; a son, Mark Scarborough and wife, Chellis of Anderson; five granddaughters, Krissi Mims and husband, Thomas of Anderson, Shaye Messenger and husband, Kyle of Greenville, Whitney Smith and husband, Thomas of Anderson, Alyssa Ammon and Katharine Ammon, both of Charlotte, NC; six great grandchildren, Hunter and Falynn Mims of Anderson, Seth and Isabelle Messenger of Greenville, and Emma and Sadie Smith of Anderson; and a brother, Joe Scarborough of Anderson. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at New Prospect Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Tom Turner, Rev. Jimmy Watt and Rev. Kyle Messenger. Burial, with military honors, will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service. The family is at the home of his son, 2133 Scarborough Road, Anderson.
