Why Clemson Football Game is not on TV

From CollegeFanz Sports Reports

The Clemson/TCU football game will not be covered by a television network this weekend. Instead, the Tigers contest against the 15th ranked Horned Frogs will only be available through ESPN360. This will be the first time that a Clemson football game featuring a ranked opponent is not televised. ABC decided to show the Miami vs. Virginia Tech game at 3:30 and Raycom picked up the UNC vs. Georgia Tech game, leaving the Clemson vs. TCU match up not televised. ESPNU had the option to pick up the game, but had already committed to show Pittsburgh vs. NC State during the 3:30 time slot.  The ACC’s associate commissioner for football, Michael Kelly, stated that the recent contract that ESPN made with the SEC had no bearing on whether the game would have been televised or not. Kelly stated that, “The only thing we really lose, based on the SEC contract this year, is the nighttime ESPNU window. It was rare that we had three ACC games on ESPNU last year."

The Clemson fan base does not seem to be happy about this snub from television, but are mostly taking it as a challenge. Players and fans seem to be thinking this is their chance to prove to the nation that Clemson should be televised. The game was originally slated for a noon kickoff, but was actually pushed back to a 3:30 kickoff because of a compromise for fans. Many fans think the noon kickoff is too early and leaves less time to engage in tailgating festivities, so they prefer a night game. Others think noon is the ideal time for a game so traffic can be coordinated and the tailgating can be done afterwards. The compromise looks like it pushed the Clemson/TCU game out of a television spot. Hopefully this weekend Clemson can prove to the nation that they deserve a television spot, especially if they are competing against a ranked opponent.

Anderson’s Livestrong Weekend Oct. 2-4

ANDERSON – What do a 40-foot dragon boat, a campground on Hartwell Lake and Lance Armstrong have in common? All will be part of Anderson’s Livestrong Day the weekend of Oct. 2-4.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation’s annual advocacy day for cancer survivorship on Oct. 2 is celebrated world-wide. This is a milestone year, as Livestrong Day marks the tenth anniversary of the day professional cyclist Lance Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer. The Upstate S.C. Army of the Livestrong Foundation will use that day as the starting point for a weekend of activities at Tiger Cove Campground on Hartwell Lake. The highlight will come Saturday afternoon, when the Army’s new dragon boat will be paddled into the cove by a team of breast cancer survivors. Tiger Cove Campground is located off Asbury Road, across the lake from Portman Marina.

The Camp for the Cure weekend was the dream of Becky Lash, who bought Tiger Cove Campground with her husband Jamie in 2005. Mr. Lash was diagnosed with cancer shortly after that, but he worked through most of his illness to get the campground into shape after years of neglect. He died this past March and Mrs. Lash is hosting the Livestrong Day and Camp for the Cure in his memory.

Half of all registrations for tent and RV sites and the campground’s cabins will benefit the Cancer Association of Anderson that weekend. Activities begin at sundown Friday, when singer/guitarist Butch Hicks will lead an old-fashioned sing-around-the-campfire. It is open to the public as well as campers.

On Saturday, the campground will be alive with activities on water and land, including kayak rentals by Grady’s Great Outdoors; arts and crafts for children; a variety of artisan and craft booths; live music by the Smooth Too of Atlanta; Chinese and American food specialties; an outdoor yoga demonstration and class by Senior Solutions; and cornhole tournaments for kids and adults.

At 1:30, Huo Li, the dragon boat owned by the Upstate SC Army and the Cancer Association of Anderson, will be paddled into the cove, followed by a Chinese swimming dragon dance by local performance artist Naimah Abdullah. Novice paddlers can join the team for a short ride on the water in the dragon boat for a nominal fee.

A complete schedule of activities can be found on the Cancer Association’s website, www.cancerassociationanderson.org/campforthecure.asp

Campsites are still available, and artists and crafters are still being sought for the weekend. For information, contact Becky Lash at 225-5993.

Double Springs Park Dedicated

On Tuesday, residents from the Double Springs Community gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate improvements to Double Springs Community Park. Recent improvements include a tree house, spring riders and a protective net to contain the ball field and prevent foul balls from entering the children’s play area.

These improvements were made possible by a PARD (Parks and Recreation Development Fund) Grant, secured due to the efforts of SC Representative Don Bowen, District 8, with matching funds provided by Anderson County Councilman Tom Allen from District 4.

“I am proud to have been a part of this project,” said Representative Bowen. “Double Springs Community Park is in my district and it is good to see these improvements for the good of this community. The Double Springs Community Association is to be commended for their efforts to make this park what it is today – one of the best kept parks in Anderson County.”

“It is always exciting to see county and state government work together with local communities on projects that benefit residents,” said Councilman Tom Allen. “This community does an excellent job of maintaining this park and keeping it clean and available to be used by everyone. The wonderful turnout of residents this evening is evidence that we made an excellent investment in this community by partnering to make these improvements a reality. I want to especially thank Steve Hartsell, president of the Double Springs Community Association, for his hard work and dedication to this community.”

For more information about the Double Springs Community Park, the Double Springs Community Association or to reserve the park, call 864.287.2938.

Trick Or Treat So Others May Eat

Because it’s scary to be hungry!

What if, instead of just eating candy on Halloween, you helped make it possible for hundreds of families to have food to eat?  Trick or Treat for canned goods rather than candy!
This year you can help stock the food pantry at Anderson Interfaith Ministries (AIM)….and we need your help now more than ever!  In July, we assisted 776 families with their food needs and another 751 families in August.  Our monthly average continues to rise as unemployment and a poor economy leave more and more families needing to ask for help to make ends meet.

During this unique annual food collection effort, canned goods and non-perishable items are collected to stock our Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry.  This event has successfully jump-started our busy holiday season for more than 11 years now, and we hope that you will want to be a part of the fun, fellowship and service this year!

We encourage your class/group to join AIM in fighting hunger by participating in Trick Or Treat So Others May Eat!  There are many ways to become involved.  You can form a team and collect in neighborhoods; or you can collect within your church, school, or organization.  AIM can help provide any materials you might need along with lots of support, while you provide the volunteer power and enthusiasm during the last two weeks of October.

We plan to kick-off this year’s event at a drop-in at our food pantry, located at 1206 S. Murray Avenue, on Monday, September 28, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.  Please mark your calendar and drop by to have some refreshments, tour our pantry, learn more about the agency and our event and sign up to participate.  Please call 965-9077 to RSVP.

Here are some “Trick Or Treat So Others May Eat” details:

1.     Recruit your group team members to participate in this event.
2.     Pick up bags and bag attachments at AIM (mid-October date TBA).
3.     Drop off bags to your neighborhoods/class prior to Halloween (between Sun., 10/18 & Wed., 10/21)
4.     Pick up the filled bags on Sunday, the 25th of October & deliver them to the Fishes & Loaves Food Pantry at AIM.  We’ll have refreshments on hand for the volunteers!

We hope you can attend.  Any questions about our agency or this amazing event will be answered and you will have an opportunity to select the neighborhoods in which your group would like to collect.  If you would like to participate but can’t come, please call 965-9077 or email angie.shaw@aimcharity.org and let’s discuss other ways you can fight hunger.

Please help us reach our goal of 30 participating teams.  A successful event will provide thousands of pounds of food for the Anderson Community for the upcoming fall and winter months.

Thank you for your support of AIM and for your care and concern for Anderson County families struggling with food insecurity!
