VIVIAN WATSON

May 4, 1919 – April 7, 2010

FAIR PLAY, SC - Vivian Marie Rumsey Watson, age 90, wife of the late Edward Hampton Watson, died Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at Country Christian Care in Fair Play, SC.

Born in Reed Creek, GA, she was a daughter of the late Wofford Henry Rumsey and Quillie Cecile Craft Rumsey.  She retired from textiles with Milliken at Abbeville Mills.  Mrs. Watson was an avid gardener, enjoyed fishing and was well known for her macaroni pie.  She was a member of Orrville Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sons, Henry E. Watson and his wife, Susan, and L. Richard Watson and his wife, Sherry, all of Seneca, SC and James Wesley Rumsey and his wife, Lillian of Walhalla, SC; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Jimmy Ray Watson and three sisters.

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 11:00 am at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel officiated by the Reverend Dr. Wendell Bannister.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm.

ANNIEMARIE EATON

ATLANTA, GA - Annemarie Eaton, age 102, of Atlanta died Friday March 26, 2010.  She was born in Mannheim, Germany, to Carl Alfred and Clara Reis and was married to Paul Theodore Eaton in November 1929.

Photo Courtesy of AJC, Copyright 2010In 1938 the couple, along with their three young children, emigrated from Germany to Atlanta where Mrs. Eaton enrolled in Georgia Tech’s evening school because women were not allowed to be in regular degree programs.  She studied industrial engineering and subsequently became a systems analyst for Sears, Roebuck that was located at the time on Ponce de Leon Avenue..  Later she was credit manager at the J.P. Allen Department Store. She returned to graduate school at Georgia State University and earned a master’s degree in gerontology at the age of seventy years old, making her the oldest person to earn a degree from GSU. As her master’s degree project she was one of the founders of the Life Enrichment Services in DeKalb County, an organization that provides programs and services that enhance the lives of seniors.  She held a passionate belief that seniors should remain active and engaged, and she lived this belief every day. She became a nationally known gerontologist and served on the White House Council on Aging and was honored by the Georgia General Assembly. She is the author of eight books that relate to aging.  Several were written on her computer when she was in her late nineties.  GSU Institute of Gerontology established a scholarship in her name. On the occasion of her 100^th birthday, both Georgia Tech and Georgia State honored her as being their oldest living alumna.  At Tech she was recognized as a Woman of Distinction and she is part of their oral history project.

She also became an internet expert and corresponded via e-mail with friends all over the world.

Her greatest love was her large family and every five years starting with her 80^th birthday she invited her widely scattered progeny to an enormous birthday party.

Mrs. Eaton was preceded in death by her husband and by an infant grandson, John Eaton.

She is survived by three children and their spouses, Clairelis and William Baxter, Charles and Marylyn Eaton and Goetz and Carolyn Eaton; by 12 grandchildren and by 22 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at. Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1722 Oak Grove Road, Decatur GA, Friday, April 9 at 11 AM.

Myrtle Lee Pruitt Burkhard

May 24, 1929 – April 2, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Myrtle Lee Pruitt Burkhard, age 80, wife of the late Ronald Burkhard, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House,

Born in Anderson, SC, she was a daughter of the late Joe Pruitt and Minnie Pruitt Hilley.  She was a bookkeeper at Woolworth’s Dept. Store in Anderson, SC for many years before moving to New York where she lived for twenty years.  She returned to Anderson, and she worked at Winn Dixie until she retired.  She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Dunn of Anderson and Jimmy Dunn of Miami, FL; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Robert Pruitt and a sister, Sarah P. Manley.

A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at Noon at Forest Lawn Memorial Park officiated by the Reverend Kurt Stutler.

Gladys Jewell Cathey

ANDERSON – Gladys Jewell Cathey, 82, of 323 E. Benson Street, Wil-Mary Apartments, died Sunday, April 4, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born September 7, 1927 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late John and Lola King Hanks. She was a retired textile employee with Orr-Lyons Mill and was a member of Taylor Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia Hunter and husband, Fred of Anderson; and one grandson, Ryan Earl Hunter. She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church conducted by Rev. Brent Lollis and Layman Harry Osborne. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The family is at the home of her daughter, 329 Monti Drive, Anderson.

Captain William Harris Bannister

ANDERSON – Captain William Harris Bannister, Civil Engineer Corps, U.S. Navy (Retired), of The Magnolias of Anderson, formerly of Woodridge Court, husband of the late Mary Ellen Smith Bannister, died Sunday, April 4, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Broadus B. and Marie Kay Bannister of Belton. He attended The Citadel and received engineering degrees from the U.S. Naval Academy, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the University of Illinois. He was a registered professional engineer and certified structural analyst. In addition to duty in Korea and Vietnam, he was commanding officer of two major commands and Officer-in-Charge/Test Group Director of a Nuclear Test at the Nevada Test Site. After retiring from the Navy, he taught mathematics, astronomy, physics and engineering courses at Tri-County Technical College and assisted in forming the Department of Quality Assurance Technology, which he headed for six years. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Evelyn B. Ogles of Charleston; two sons, William B. Bannister and Michael E. Bannister, both of Dacula, GA; three grandsons; a sister, Martha King of Anderson; and three brothers, B. Willis and Jerry Kay Bannister, both of Belton, and Jimmy Ray Bannister of Gastonia, NC. A sister, Frances Cassity, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, conducted by Rev. Bob Marcaurelle. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson.

ANNA JULIA HOWARD BRIERLY

APRIL 26, 1907 – MARCH 1, 2010

Anna Julia Howard Brierly, age 102, of Delray Beach, Florida, formerly of Anderson, passed away Monday, March 1, 2010.

She was born in Anderson on April 26,1907, the daughter of Victoria Heard Howard and Thomas Edward Howard, Sr. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Winthrop College (now Winthrop University) in 1929. She taught grade school in Anderson during the Great Depression and worked in advertising in New York City where she met her first husband, Joel Howard, who predeceased her after a marriage of thirty-three years. She was also predeceased by her second husband, Robert Brierly, after a marriage of thirteen years, and her brother, Thomas Edward Howard, Jr.

She is survived by her nephew, Thomas Carlton Howard and his wife, Judith Rose Scott, of Blacksburg, Virginia and two grandnephews, Christopher Frederick Howard of Richmond, Virginia, and John Marcus Edward Howard and his wife, Julie McGhee Howard, of Atlanta, Georgia, and two great grandnieces, Lucy Rose and Sadie Camille Howard of Atlanta.

Anna Julia will be remembered for her sharp sense of humor, her tenacity of spirit, and her enthusiasm for life.

A Graveside Service will be conducted at 2:30 pm on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Old Silver Brook Cemetery conducted by Dr. Dennis R. Tedder.

ANDERSON, SC – John Elmer Myers, age 90, of 516 Drayton Circle, passed away Saturday, April 3, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Petersburg, Pennsylvania on March 28, 1920, he was a son of the late Fred Myers and Ida Guisler Myers.  Mr. Myers retired from Owens Corning Fiberglas in 1984 and was a member of the Upstate Buick Club.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Petersburg and attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Anderson.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Holland Myers; daughter, Judy Myers Frailey and husband, Richard of Anderson; brother, Edward Guisler Myers of Petersburg; two grandchildren: Carlette F. ANDERSON, SC – Thelma M. Harward, age 84, wife of the late Jesse H. Harward, passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson County on September 5, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Gary Whitman and Eula Holmes Whitman. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her children: Ellen Beebe and husband, Jack of Townville, J.C. Harward of Anderson, and Dorothy Whitten and husband, Samuel of Starr; sisters: Hazel Campbell of Iva, Parniece Anderson of Anderson, Sylvene Keown of Starr, and Christine Anderson of Mississippi; brother, Coleman Whitman of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren: Dwayne Cobb, Tammy Meredith, Shannon Attaway, and Chris Whitten; and eight great grandchildren.

THOMAS HARPER MILAM

SANDY SPRINGS, SC – Thomas Harper Milam, 88, husband of the late Jane Carson Milam, died April 2, 2010 at his residence.

Born in Sandy Springs, he was the son of the late Robert Richardson (Bob) Milam and Leah Harper Milam. He graduated from Pendleton High School in 1940, and served in the U.S. Army during WW II from 1942 to 1947. He served as a rifleman squad leader and platoon sergeant, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Expert Infantry Badge, World War II Victory Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal. He witnessed the bombing of Negasaki from the sea, where as the assault squad leader of his battalion, he was staged with the 98^th Infantry to invade Japan in the planned Operation Olympic. He was a farmer and co-owner of Milam Spreader Service. He was a member of the historic Pendleton Farmers’ Society and the Pendleton Young Farmers.

He was a fifth-generation member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon and served as Sunday School secretary for over 60 years. He was a founding member of the Sandy Springs Fire Department, where he served as chief. He retired from the fire department at the age of 80 after 23 years of service. He volunteered in the community by raising the flag at the Sandy Springs Post Office, removing trash from the Sandy Springs Community Park, and collecting cans for the Anderson County Fire Protection Burned Children’s Fund. In recognition of his service, he was named Anderson County Firefighter of the Year in 1998, awarded the Anderson County Fire Protection Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001, honored for his contributions to the community by the Anderson Rotary Club in 2002, and named as a Senior Superlative by the Foothills Presbytery in 2007.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, George Harper Milam, Robert Richardson (Bobby) Milam, Jr., and Frank Harper Milam; two sisters, Emma Milam and Julia Milam Every Bradford; and two close cousins, Henry Pickett Milam and Cornelia Milam McCraw.

He is survived by two sons, William Thomas Milam and his spouse, Darlen Weisgerber Milam, of Maryville, TN, and Stephen Richard Milam and his spouse, Dana Wilkie Milam, of Salisbury, NC, and her parents, Joel D. and Charlotte Lee Wilkie; one daughter, Elizabeth Milam and her spouse, Stephen Lomas, of Sandy Springs; seven grandchildren, Megan Ruth Milam, Daniel Thomas Milam, Carson Hunt Lomas, Anna Elizabeth Milam, Sara Catherine Milam, Turner Stephenson Lomas and Leah Rose Milam; three sisters, Elizabeth Milam Adams, Annie Earle Milam Derrick, and Lucia Burns Milam Cook; 17 nephews and nieces, including George Kennedy Milam; and many dedicated friends including Thomas Edmond (Tom) Garrison, III and family of Denver Downs Farm.

After losing Jane, his last years were enriched by the fellowship he found at Bo’s Grill, MeMaw’s Café’ and Waffle House #426, for which his family is grateful for their kindness.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Susan Smith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home of his daughter, Elizabeth Milam, 509 Hickory Lane, Pendleton.

WILLIAM O. WEBB

OCTOBER 23, 1933 – APRIL 1, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – William “Bill” Oliver Webb, age 76, of 500 Timber Lane passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2010, at his home.

Born in Takoma Park, Maryland on October 23, 1933, he was a son of the late Arlie Otto Webb and Ruby Blanche Johnson Webb.  He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  Mr. Webb retired from the Department of State in Washington, D.C.  He was a member of North Anderson Baptist Church. Additionally, he was a member of the Experienced Aircraft Association and the Pendleton Swingers Square Dance Club.

Survivors include his wife of forty-five years, Patricia F. Webb; children: Wendy Marie Lough and husband, Adam of Boiling Springs, SC, Christopher S. Webb of Linthicum  Heights, MD, and Nancy Jane Matter of Dallas, TX; grandchildren: Samantha Ann Webb, Sophie Elizabeth Webb, Elisabeth Marie Lough, William Grady Webb, Ryan Joseph Matter, and Jamie Nicole Matter.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Arlene Webb Guy.

The Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, April 5, 2010, at North Anderson Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Bill Rigsby.  Interment with Military Honors provided by Fort Gordon will be held in the M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

The family is at the home and will receive friends at North Anderson Baptist Church from 12 noon until 1:00 pm on Monday, prior to the service.

MARCH 1, 1931 – APRIL 2, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – Phyllis Kelley Osborne, age 79, of 219 LaFrance Road, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010.

Born March 1, 1931, in Seneca, SC, she was a daughter of the late John Kelley and Brodie Ginn Kelley.  She retired from Ryobi and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her children: Gail Darlene Sunderland, Norma Jean Osborne, Brenda Alice Mueller, Larry Wayne Kelley, Roy David Kelley, Michael Ray Osborne, Thomas Brian Osborne, and Nicholas Kelley; sister, Wilma Evans; brothers: Lyndon Kelley, Norman Kelley, and Arnold Kelley.  Thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive her.

She was predeceased by her parents; a son, Jackie Eugene Kelley; a sister, Estelle Kelley; and two brothers: Cecil Kelley and W.C. Kelley.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Monday, April 5, 2010.  A Graveside Service will follow at 4:30 pm at Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family is at the home.
