HOYT WILLIAMS

JULY 30, 1923 – MARCH 21, 2010

STARR, SC – James Hoyt Williams, age 86, of 209 Wilton E. Hall Road, passed away on Sunday, March 21, 2010.

Born in Elbert County on July 30, 1923, he was a son of the late Robert Clayton Williams and Delia Williams Williams.  He retired from Owens-Corning Fiberglas and was a member of Starr United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-four years, Stella Carter Williams; a daughter-in-law, Shelby Williams Crump; grandson, Mac Williams; great grandsons: Jerry Williams and Gary Williams.

He was predeceased by a son, the Reverend Jimmy Williams.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Iva City Cemetery. The family is at the home and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 23, 2010.

MARCH 19, 1935 – MARCH 21, 2010
 
ANDERSON, SC – Elizabeth Jeanette Burns, age 75, of 405 Northlake Drive, passed away on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House.
 
Born in Westborough, MA, on March 19, 1935, she was a daughter of the late William John Black and Bella Jane Black.  She was a homemaker and a member of Central Presbyterian Church.  Mrs. Burns enjoyed Senior Solutions.
 
Survivors include her husband, David Burns; daughters: Kathleen Iglesias of Fort Pierce, FL, Deborah Walker of Virginia Beach, VA, and Donna Brunner of St. Petersburg, FL; son, Brian Burns of Pendleton, SC; three wonderful sons-in-law, a beloved daughter-in-law, and five beautiful grandchildren.  Also surviving are one sister, Peggy Watkins of Patchogue, NY; two brothers: Norman Black of Massapequa, NY, and David Black of Columbia, SC; and her former husband, Richard Davis of Fort Pierce, FL.
 
In addition to her parents, three brothers predeceased her: the Reverend Thomas Black, Robert Black, and Jim Black.
 
The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Central Presbyterian Church conducted by the Reverend Dr. David J. Bailey.  Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
 
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that the family prefers a Butterfly Memorial be placed on the grounds of Hospice of The Upstate.  Those desiring to contribute may make donations to Brian Burns, 128 Blueberry Lane, Pendleton, SC 29670.

CARA B. ATTAWAY

SEPTEMBER 7, 1926 – MARCH 20, 2010
 
ANDERSON, SC – Cara Brock Attaway, age 83, of 706 College Avenue, passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House.
 
Born in Abbeville County on September 7, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Charles Henry Brock and Lola Lee Ridgeway Brock.  She retired from the textiles industry and was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church.
 
Survivors include her husband, Charles Aubrey Attaway; son, G. Ronald McClellan; “daughter-in-love”, Margaret E. McClellan; sisters: Mary Ragsdale and Elizabeth Franklin; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a great grandson, Blake McClellan; a brother, Chick Brock; and sisters: Eugenia Attaway and Edith Charping.
 
The Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, March 22, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Jack Couch and the Reverend J. Floyd Stansell.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
 
The family is at the home of Mr. & Mrs. G. Ronald McClellan, 116 Hammett Acres, Anderson, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm on Monday.

DAVID R. SMITH

FEBRUARY 23, 1932 – MARCH 20, 2010
 
ANDERSON, SC – David Ray Smith, age 78, resident of the Summit Place, passed away on March 20, 2010.
 
Born in Belton, SC, on February 23, 1932, he was the son of the late Ray Edward Smith and Elizabeth Harris Smith.  He was a United States Navy Veteran and attended Anderson College and Erskine College.  Mr. Smith retired from Piedmont Natural Gas and was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church.  He was most passionate about Boy Scouts and for many years was a Boy Scout leader on the local and district level.
 
Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Marian Findley Smith; three sons and daughters-in-law: Findley & Virginia Smith of Anderson, SC, Steven & Ann Smith of Easley, SC, and Shan & Sherry Smith of Dayton, VA; five grandchildren: Joshua, Jared, Dylaney, Carly Smith and Lisa Smith West.
 
The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Frances M. Elrod.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
 
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

EDNA S. McALISTER

APRIL 12, 1927 – MARCH 20, 2010
 
TOWNVILLE, SC – Edna Samantha Culbertson McAlister, age 82, of 102 Singleton Drive and wife of the late Marvin Eugene McAlister, passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House.
 
Born in Athens, GA, on April 12, 1927, she was a daughter of the late I.N. Culbertson and Cornelia Jane Payton Culbertson.  She was a homemaker and member of Oakdale Baptist Church.
 
Survivors include her children: Diane McGee of Townville, SC, Leonard Osborne of Townville, SC, and Patricia Hollingsworth of Fair Play, SC; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
 
The family will receive friends at Oakdale Baptist Church from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm on Monday, March 22, 2010.  The Funeral Service will follow at 7:30 pm and will be conducted by the Reverend David Blizzard and the Reverend David Walters.

JOE MAHAFFEY

ANDERSON – Joseph Gentry Mahaffey, a resident of North Pointe Assisted Living, widow of Hazel White Mahaffey, died Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.
Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late John Allen and Alice Gentry Mahaffey. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was retired from the building supply business. Mr. Mahaffey was a member of the Knights of Pythias and was a member of North Anderson Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Candace Mahaffey of Los Angeles, CA, and Jo Anna M. Sinclair and husband, Bill of Laurinburg, NC; three grandchildren, Jennifer Byers and husband, Matt, Alyson Watson and husband, Jesse, and Melissa Sinclair; one great grandchild, Maddie Byers; one sister, Evelyn Welborn of Anderson; and special friend, Peggy Marchbanks of Anderson, and her children, Jim Marchbanks and wife, Lori, Cindy Parris and husband, Mike; granddaughters, Allison Sokol and husband, Casey, Collins Wayland and husband, Bud, and Stacey Parris; and two great granddaughters, Lillian Sokol and Ella Wayland. Joe considered Peggy and her family his extended family.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John A. Mahaffey, and sisters, Martha Mahaffey, Roberta Branyon, and Esther Pettigrew.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, Anderson. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at Laurinburg City Cemetery in Laurinburg, NC.

FRANK J. FEDELE

ANDERSON – Frank John Fedele, 92, of 211 Dean Road, died Friday, March 19, 2010 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born June 26, 1917 in Somerville, NJ, he was the son of the late Charles and Sylvia DiNicola Fedele. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was retired from Johns Manville Company in Manville, NJ and was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Clemson.

He is survived by his son, Raymond S. Fedele and wife, Kathryn of Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia I. Fedele.

LARRY R. KARNES

JULY 13, 1938 – MARCH 19, 2010
 
ANDERSON, SC – Larry Richard Karnes, age 71, of 314 Greenhill Drive, passed away on Friday, March 19, 2010, at the AnMed Health Medical Center.
 
Born in Nashville, TN, on July 13, 1938, he was the son of the late Daniel & Ruby Langley Karnes.  He served in the United States Air Force and retired from Ross Controls in Lavonia, GA.  Mr. Karnes was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church where he was a faithful servant to our Lord Jesus Christ.  He was a volunteer for Anderson Interfaith Ministries, Meals on Wheels, and Home With A Heart.
 
Survivors include his wife, Carol Omelenchuk Karnes; children: Laurie Garrett of DeLeon Springs, FL, Richard Karnes of Athens, GA, Sherry Wagner of Harrington, DE, and James Karnes of Anderson, SC; and four beloved grandchildren: Jennie, Ryan, Angel, and Richie.
 
The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, March 22, 2010, at New Prospect Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Dr. Tony Smith and the Reverend Tom Turner.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Fumiko Medlin

February 10, 1931 – March 17, 2010

ANDERSON, SC- Fumiko Sugano Medlin, age 79, of 504 Jasmin Drive, wife of the late Lee A. Medlin, died March 17, 2010, at St. Francis Regency Hospital, Greenville, SC.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, she was a daughter of the late Tojelo and Chiyo Sugano.  She grew up and attended school in Japan. She worked at Johnson Air Base in Japan, where she met Mr. Medlin and they were married there before coming to the Anderson area to live.

She worked for many years as a hostess at the University Inn; was an avid mall walker at Anderson Mall; was a frequent visitor of the patients at NHC and attended Trinity Springs Church of God.  She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother and she will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Medlin is survived by her daughters; Shirley Gentry and her husband, Roy and Norma Painter and her husband, Ray all of Anderson and a grandson, Michael Williams.  She is also survived by two brothers and three sisters; several nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Medlin was predeceased by a daughter Mary Jane Medlin and a grandson.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at 2:00 pm, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by Reverend Scott Vaughn and Reverend James Patterson.  Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will be at the home of her daughter on 511 Blume Road, Anderson, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday, March 20, 2010, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

SARA SNIPES MORGAN

ANDERSON – Sara Louise Snipes Morgan, 82, a resident of North Pointe Assisted Living, formerly of Gerrard Road, widow of Edward W. Morgan, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born April 15, 1927 in Townville, she was the daughter of the late Fred Eugene and Eunice Kay Snipes. She worked for many years with Singer Manufacturing Co. and retired as food service manager with Anderson School District #5. She was a Charter member of Benevolent, Patriotic Order of Does, Anderson Drove #220 and was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Brenda Morgan Hudson (Gordon) of Anderson; son, Barry Dale Morgan of Anderson; grandchildren, Elisabeth “Betsy” Bryant Cromer (John), Morgan D. Bryant, all of Columbia, and Brooke Morgan (Brandon Johnson) of Piedmont; and two great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Billie E. Snipes.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, conducted by Rev. Tom Turner and John C. Cromer. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11:15 a.m. Saturday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson.

WILLIAM A. MACDONALD

JUNE 30, 1924 – MARCH 12, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – William “Bill” Alexander MacDonald, age 85, of 135 Bradley Park, passed away on Friday, March 12, 2010.

Born in Seattle, Washington on June 30, 1924, he was a son of the late William A. MacDonald and Marguerite Jolly MacDonald.   He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley.  Mr. MacDonald retired from Crown Cork & Seal, Co. as Vice President and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anderson.

Survivors include his wife, Anne T. MacDonald; children: Judith MacDonald of California, Lori Taylor of California, and Debra Holmes of Illinois; and six grandchildren.

A Private Funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anderson, SC. 

It is suggested that memorials be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church  & School, 1200 Cornelia Road, Anderson, SC 29621.

GEORGIA RUMSEY McMAHAN

BELTON – Georgia Rumsey McMahan, 93, formerly of Anderson, left this earth to rejoin her husband and all of the loved ones gone on before her on Wednesday, March 17, 2010.

Born June 11, 1916 in Hart County, GA, she was the daughter of the late George Elzy and Nora Ellen Dickert Allen Rumsey. She was the widow of Walter Burley McMahan. She loved and served the Lord while being a homemaker and taking care of family and friends. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Banister (Mike), a nephew she raised in the home, Harold Jefferson (Sybil), and nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a niece raised in the home, Ethel Brown (Mitchel), her brothers, Henry, Jack, and Joe Allen, Levis Rumsey, and her sisters, Fronie Wicker and Leila Jefferson.

Her one wish was to be able to stay in her own home. The family wishes to express their love and appreciation to the special ladies that helped in her care in order for this wish to be fulfilled, Betty Welborn, Faye Bell, Shirley Horne, Reba Collins, Dara Jefferson, Cathy McGraw, and the staff of Interim Hospice.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2010 at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Downtown Chapel, conducted by Chaplain Allyson Helvie of Interim Hospice. Burial will be in New Silver Brook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Friday at the mortuary, 401 North Main Street, Anderson. The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, 120 Timberlane Drive, Belton, SC.
