Elizabeth Ayers

Pendleton, SC- Miss Elizabeth Sue Ayers, age 15, of 1324 Moorehead Place, died Saturday, March 13, 2010 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of Tripp Ayers and Natasha McClellan Ayers and sister of James Ayers. Elizabeth was a freshman at Pendleton High School, where she was involved in JV Soccer, JV Cheerleading, cross-country running and was enrolled in honors classes. She was also active in the youth group at First Baptist Church of Pendleton.

Survivors include her parents and brother of the home; maternal grandparents, James and Judy McClellan of Marshville, NC; paternal grandmother, Pat Ayers of Simpsonville, SC; great-grandmother, Helena McClellan of Oakboro, NC; aunts, Lana Campbell and Lori Schweers.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Stoy and Agnes Hinson, Helen and Wofford Ayers, and Frank McClellan.

The funeral service will be held at 4PM on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at First Baptist Church of Pendleton officiated by Reverends Courtney Krueger and Jeremy Cook. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6pm-8pm. Elizabeth will be placed in the church at 3:30pm on Wednesday.

Robbie Jo Southerland

July 6, 1928 – March 13, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Robbie Jo Hackett Southerland, age 81, wife of Ken Southerland, of 107 Aycock Drive, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at her son’s residence.

Born July 6, 1928 in Mt. Holly, NC, Robbie Jo was a daughter to the late Joe F. Hackett and Fairy Martin Hackett.  She was a charter member of High Praises Church of God and retired from Singer/Ryobi Corp. after 25 years of service.  She was a fun-loving Christian who enjoyed playing practical jokes on her friends and family.

Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Mark Kenneth Southerland, and his wife, Donna; her daughter, Kathy Marie Cooper, and her husband, Tim, all of Belton, SC; seven grandchildren, Amanda Elgin, Alyssa Elgin, Chelsea Bonifer, Justin Parnell, Rachel Cooper, Melissa Willis, and Morgan Southerland; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, James Huey Hackett of Belton, SC and Rufus V. Hackett of Anderson, SC.

She was predeceased by a son, John F. Tilley; daughter, Linda Faye Elgin; sister, Jimmie Lois Hackett; and brothers, George W. Hackett and Rudolph K. Hackett.

The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 2:00 PM at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Chris Sustar and Mr. John Jenkins officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will be at the home of Mark Southerland, 301 Griffin Road, Belton, SC and will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, March 15, 2010 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM.

WAYNE GLEASON

IVA – William Wayne Gleason, 69, of 108 Latham Street, died Saturday, March 13, 2010 at his residence.

Born May 2, 1940 in Anderson County, he was the son of the late George Leonard and Gertrude Wicker Gleason. He served in the U.S. Army and was a retired Anderson County employee. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Michelle; children, Billy, Audri, and Greg Gleason, all of New York, and Andy Gleason of Vermont; four sisters, Betty Compton of Pickens, Faye Jones, Renee Mackins, and Carla Gleason, all of Anderson; three brothers, David Gleason of Iva, Rufus Gleason of Belton, and Roger Gleason of Anderson; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Jennie Smith Gleason.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Smith’s Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.

MISS MARY LOU MARTIN

ANDERSON – Mary Lou Martin, 95, of Anderson died Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born May 12, 1914 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late John Allen Martin and Annie Elliott McDavid Martin. She was a retired seamstress, volunteer for various organizations, avid worker in her community, member of the Anderson Garden Club and St. John’s United Methodist Church. Miss Martin was a volunteer for Anderson Area Medical Center for 25 years, working in labor and delivery, making packets for new mothers, delivering flowers and updating patient records, always walking to the hospital in rain or snow. She was the first Hospice volunteer in Anderson and was one of the favorites of the volunteers at the Rainey Hospice House; always willing and eager to do whatever was needed. 

When she was 86, she received the Service to Mankind Award, bestowed upon her by the Anderson Sertoma Club. On June 28, 1990, she was awarded a Certificate of Recognition for conscientious and dedicated community service from Modern Woodmen of America. In  1996, the State Annual Convention of the Physically Handicapped Society chose her as their “Queen” and in 1997 she won the state award for the “Most Outstanding Female.” In 2001, she was presented Croxton Award, by the SC Physically Handicapped Society. In 2002, she was the runner-up for the Croxton Award. 

She was well known for her hobby of making dried flower stationary, of which everyone in the family and friends has been honored to receive. She is also well known for her decorated wedding cakes and cheese straws. Her ability to teach, even though she was deaf and could read lips, came in many forms; through all the Scrabble games, Crossword puzzles, sewing tips, cooking hints, table and flower decorations, landscaping ideas, interior design, dolls and toy collections and of course her many books. She started recycling before anyone and would take endless supplies to the Physically Handicapped Boys and Girls on Main Street, who seemed to love to get these recyclables and create a treasure from any remnant.  

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by various nieces, nephews and great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 3 brothers, John Allen Martin, Roddy Martin and Jack Martin; sister, Caroline M. Hawkins and special friend Barney Darby. 

Funeral service will be held at 3pm Tuesday at St. John’s United Methodist Church with Dr. William R. Childs officiating. A private burial will follow after the service at Ebenezer Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 until 8 at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 N. 

The family is at the home of the nephew, John Hawkins, 1301 Bryant Road in Anderson.

GWENDOLYN HORTON WEST

ANDERSON-Gwendolyn Horton West of Anderson, SC and Framingham, MA died at age 65, on March 12, 2010.  Born in Bethune, SC on April 3, 1944, she was the daughter of Clayton Wilson and Ethel B. Horton.  Gwen graduated from Camden High School in Camden, South Carolina in 1962.

Gwen’s musical training and abilities developed at a young age to become an accomplished pianist and organist as well as blessed with a significant singing voice.  As early as 12 years of age, she played for congregations at The First Baptist Church in Lugoff, SC.  Later she played at The Salem Baptist Church in the Charlotte, NC area, The Presbyterian Church in Bethune, SC (where she and her family hold membership and is considered to be  her family’s home Church for over 30 years) and at The First Baptist Church in Framingham, MA (where she was music director, pianist and organist for over 10 years).  In Framingham, she directed and conducted music for a multi-faith combining of choir groups from over 75 area Churches during several annual Thanksgiving celebrations.  At the historic 180 year old Framingham Church she delighted in playing the 5^th oldest (wooden pipes) organ still functioning in the United States.  In all the communities that she resided, she took pleasure in organizing musical services at nursing homes and homes for the elderly on a frequent basis, especially at holidays.  In several communities she provided piano instruction for a number of students at her home, schools and churches.  On several occasions, she held recitals to show each of her student’s development and progress for the enjoyment of their families and friends.  In all instances she was thrilled in sharing her very accomplished talents and skills.      

For over 30 years, Gwen’s working career included management responsibilities at the Raytheon Corporation in Cambridge, MA.  In the late 1990’s, she joined the founding team that formed the prominent architectural, engineering and construction firm of Process Facilities Incorporated (PFI) based in the Boston, MA and managed office operations in Boston, Philadelphia and California.  After the acquisition of PFI by Parsons Engineering in 2005, she relocated to the Charlotte office in 2006 to provide executive management support for a large Parsons Division.  In Charlotte she held responsibilities for acquiring business operation licenses (architectural, engineering disciplines, construction) and setting up management structures for the Division in a number of states in the US and countries around the world frequently working with State Departments and Departments of State to establish legal entities which Parsons operates under to provide architectural, engineering and construction services for clients globally.         

Gwen is survived by her husband Henry West,  and children,  Tara West Carter (Don),  Scott West (Patti),  Grant West (Joanne Gold),  Clay West (Amanda) and Ami Wood (Cliffton);  and, grandchildren,  Matthew West,  Jake Carter,  CJ Wood and Rowan Carter as well as her mother Ethel Brock Horton.  

Gwen’s family would like to thank:  the Greenville Hospital Services Nursing and Support staffs, and Surgeons - Dr. Bruce Snyder and Dr. Terry Cole and other Partners and Associates;  the Anderson (AnMed) Nursing and Support staffs, and Surgeons – Dr. Matthew George and Dr. David Strathen and other Partners and Associates of the William Buice firm.  With a sincere thank you to Interim Home HealthCare (Anderson) Case Manager/Nurse Debbie Mull and Physical Therapist Mindi Henderson.

ANDERSON, SC - Lucy Parnell McAlister, 96, widow of Clarence McAlister, died Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Ellenburg Nursing Home.
 
Born February 28, 1914, in Anderson County, SC, she was the daughter of the late George Parnell and Jessie “Pattie” Campbell Parnell.  She was a member of Pope Drive Baptist Church.
 
Survivors include her son, Ed McAlister and his wife, Emily of Anderson; one sister, Betty Gentry of Anderson; two granddaughters, Robin Kegley and her husband, Geoff of Wilmington, NC and Amy Meredith and her husband, Brett of Greenville, SC; three great-grandsons, Bryson and Foster Kegley and Parker Meredith.
 
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Fred Parnell, Calvin Parnell, Floyd Parnell and Ralph Parnell and three sisters, Madge Warren, Jessie Jennings and Willie Mae Warden.
 
A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at New Silver Brook Cemetery conducted by Reverend Mack Tester.  The family will receive friends following the service.

BELTON, SC - Beatrice Standard Minor, age 63, wife of John L. Minor of 17710 Brown Avenue Extension, died Thursday, March 11, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.
 
Born in Fair Play, SC on February 17, 1947, Mrs. Minor was a daughter of the late Claude Standard and Lela Mae Reece Standard.  She attended Cross Hill Church of God.
 
She is survived by her husband of the home; sons, John Minor of Richland, SC, Chris Minor of Belton and Shannon Minor of Anderson; daughters, Jackie Durbin and Kimberly Pope, of Anderson; two brothers; five sisters; 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
 
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, a sister and a grandchild.

ANDERSON, SC - Florence “Flo” Smith Fowler, age 94, wife of the late Arthur David Fowler, formerly of Wilderness Trail, passed away on March 10, 2010 at the Summit Place in Anderson.
 
Born in Greenville, SC on October 5, 1915, Mrs. Fowler was a daughter of the late Roy L. Smith, Sr., and Sudie Forrester Smith.  She worked in retail in the Anderson area for many years and was a homemaker.  She was a member of Nell Townsend Presbyterian Church.
 
Survivors include her son, Arthur “Art” S. Fowler and his wife, Martha and her daughter, Nancy Fowler Jones, all of Anderson; two grandsons, Keith Jones of Greenville and Scott Jones and his wife, Kelli of Anderson and their children, Noah and Lauren and a sister, Helen Anthony of Lilburn, GA.
 
In addition to her husband, and parents, she was predeceased by her son-in-law, Bill Jones; three brothers and two sisters.

Anderson, SC- Mrs. Ruby Ramey Shirley, age 86, wife of the late Aubrey Newton “Bud” Shirley of 208 Glenwood Avenue died Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at AnMed Health Medical Center.
 
Born in Oconee County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Albert Ramey and Lucinda Ramey. She was retired from Owens Corning Fiberglas and was a member of the Women’s Retirees Group. Ruby was a member of Homeland Park United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and enjoyed singing in the choir. She was also a member of The Order of the Eastern Star.
 
Survivors include her son, Thomas Michael Shirley of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; daughters, Margaret Vollrath of Anderson, Luanne Shirley of the home and Colleen McNabb of Apollo Beach, FL; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
 
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Homeland Park United Methodist Church officiated by Reverends Steve Compton and Joseph Vollrath.

ANDERSON, SC – Tina M. Wozniak passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2010.
 
Born on November 14, 1972, she was a graduate of Tri-County Technical College and was employed in the Department of Computer Information Technology at Clemson University.
 
She was the beloved & devoted wife of Christopher R. Wozniak; a wonderful loving mother to their children: a three-year-old daughter, Emma Christina Wozniak; and a nine-month-old daughter, Rhett Evelynn Wozniak.  She leaves behind her three adorable dogs: Mindy, Nani, and Oreo.
 
Her parents, Bill & Brenda Worley; and her sister, Tonya Worley, also survive her.
 
A Funeral Mass will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Clemson, celebrated by Father Hayden J. Vaverek.  A committal service will follow in Memory Gardens, Clemson.
 
The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home, Anderson, from 6:30 pm until 8 pm on Wednesday, March 10, 2010.  A prayer vigil will follow at 8 pm.

ANDERSON – Gladys Parrott Ferguson, of Anderson, widow of James Allen Ferguson, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at NHC of Anderson.

Born December 21, 1914 in York, SC, she was the daughter of the late Jessie and Minnie Beamgard Parrott. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of Anderson where she was a member of the Vandiver Circle.

Surviving are her son, James Allen Ferguson, Jr. and his wife Louise of Rock Hill; daughter, Kay Cothran and her husband Ed of Anderson; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

A private graveside service will be held Wednesday afternoon in Fort Mill, SC. The family will be at the home of the daughter, Kay Cothran.
