Julia Wright Place

ANDERSON, SC - Julia Wright Place, wife of Osmond “Ozzie” V. Place, of 200 Londonberry Drive, died Thursday, April 22, 2010, at her home.

Born in Franklin, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Julian Barner Wright and Bonnie Lee Burgess Wright.  Mrs. Place worked at Village Fashions in Pendleton and Terry Furniture in Anderson.  She was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, her daughters, Kimberly M. Black and her husband, William E. Black, Jr., Anderson, and Pamela M. Bevill and her husband, William B. Bevill, Appling, GA; two grandchildren, William “Will” E. Black III and Johnathan “John” M. Black; brother, Jerry D. Wright, San Antonio, TX; and special friends, Anna Wheeler, Atlanta, GA, and Geri Kirkley, Anderson, SC.

The Funeral Service will be Sunday, April 25, 2010, at 2:00 PM, at Boulevard Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny McKinney officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home, Saturday, April 24, 2010, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of The Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621

ALVIS S. TODD

 July 16, 1933 – April 22, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Alvis Silvester “Meatball” Todd, age 76, of 513 Fairmont Road, husband of the late Wilma Kohler Todd, passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Mount Airy, GA, he was a son of the late Tillman Todd and Julia Chastain Todd. He served as an M.P. in the United States Army and was in the National Guard.  Mr. Todd was a retired carpenter and was known for his love for raising birds.  He was a lifetime member of the V.F. W. and was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include his son, Henry Todd of Seneca; daughters, Brenda Smith and her husband, Keith of Anderson and Barbara Bench and her husband, Fred of Iva; brothers, Jessie and Gene Todd, and sister, Frances Nix, all of Anderson; four grandchildren, Craig and Eric Smith, Jennifer Reese and Josh Bench; three great-grandchildren, Austin, Brooklyn and Caitlyn Reese.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Lowe and Ruby Bowen.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will be at the home of his daughter, Brenda Smith, 1403 Forest Lane, Anderson and will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday April 24, 2010 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

REBECCA H. BOWEN

WILLIAMSTON – Rebecca Hinnant Bowen, 87, of 147 Paulan Road, widow of Carson W. Bowen, died Monday, April 19, 2010 at her home.

Born October 17, 1922 in Columbia, SC, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.  James Napolean Bowen. She was a homemaker and served as a Pink Lady at AnMed Health Medical Center for 10 years. Mrs. Bowen was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she taught in the 4 year- old Sunday School Department for 27 years.

Survivors include two sons, James L. Bowen and wife, Brenda, of Williamston, and Rep. Don C. Bowen and wife, Tomilyn, of Anderson; eight grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Reeta Bowen Pelfrey; daughter-in-law, Sharon B. Bowen;  great grandson, Jacob Samuel Terry; three brothers, Bill, Walter, and Omearl Hinnant;  and two sisters, Elizabeth Haltiwanger and Margaret Dickerson.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Paul Frey. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home of a son, James and Brenda Bowen, 148 Paulan Road, Williamston.

HAZEL L. PRUITT

AUGUST 2, 1921 – APRIL 21, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – Hazel Inez Loftis Pruitt, age 88, of 319 Dogwood Street, passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, SC, on August 2, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Ed & Bessie Loftis.  Mrs. Pruitt retired from Abney Mills and was a member of Garner Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Douglas Pruitt; son, Douglas R. Pruitt and wife, Gale Geddings Pruitt of Belton, SC; sisters: Selma Smith of Anderson, and Jennie Scott of Baltimore, MD; two grandchildren: Kim Pruitt & Mandy Gravina and husband, Frank; five great grandchildren: Josh Hoover, Brandon Hoover and wife, Heather, Kristen Hoover, Maegan Gravina, and Haley Gravina; and two great-great grandchildren: Gage Pruitt & Sadie Hoover.  Also, several special nieces, nephews, & cousins survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Reed Loftis & Luther Loftis; and three sisters: Cora Hembree, Beatrice Hembree, and Rosa Thomas.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 23, 2010, at New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Reverend Dr. Jack Couch and the Reverend T. Dale Lynch.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to Hospice of The Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.

HOWARD MIZE

ANDERSON – Marvin Howard Mize, 84, of 309 B Street, died Monday, April 19, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born December 19, 1925 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Marvin and Robie Mullinax Mize. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. Mr. Mize was a retired truck driver for Smith Motors. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include a brother, George Mize of Anderson; companion, Ollie M. Long of Fair Play; nephews, Glenn Smith of Anderson, Reese Fant of Piedmont, and a niece, Teresa Simpson of Atlanta; great nephews, David, Kevin , and Jason Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gilbretta Fant, and a brother, Charlie Mize.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Old Silver Brook Cemetery conducted by Rev. Ray Grant and Rev. Larry Epps. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence.

LOUIS MAX KENT, MD

NOVEMBER 1, 1934 – APRIL 18, 2010

CLEMSON, SC –Louis Max Kent, MD, husband of Donna Curtis Kent, died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at his home in Clemson, SC.  He was born in Conyers, GA, and was the son of the late Louis Hudson and Julia Max Kent.

Max graduated from Mercer University in 1958 and from the Medical College of Georgia in 1962.  His internship was at Emory University-Grady Hospital in Atlanta.  He took his orthopedic residency at Wake Forest Medical Center, Winston Salem, NC, and his final year of residency at Shriners Hospital in Greenville, SC. Dr. Kent worked as an orthopedic surgeon in Anderson, SC, from 1967 – 1997.

Survivors include his wife; his sister, Anrie Miller and husband, Jerry of Conyers, GA; his children: sons, Stuart Kent and wife, Connie of Macon, GA, Paul Kent and wife, Kellie of Columbia, SC; daughters, Summer Kent Wright and husband, Joey of Clinton, MS, and Jennifer Curtis Nelson and husband, Craig of Clemson, SC; grandchildren: Megan Kent, James Paul Kent, Stuart Kent Jr., Mary Elaine Kent, Zoie Kent, Henry Kent, George Kent, Grady Wright, Owen Wright, Murray Wright, Holly Nelson, Matthew Nelson, Abigail Nelson, and Emma Nelson.  He is also survived by many cherished nieces & nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; his sons: Louis Max Kent, Jr. and Daryl Kent; and his former wife, Elaine Kent Hughes.

Dr. Kent always sought to give the best possible care to his patients.  His patients often became life-long friends.  He loved the art of medicine and always felt it an honor to have become a physician. 

A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Clemson United Methodist Church, 300 Frontage Road, conducted by The Reverend Paul Hutchison.  A private family committal service will precede the service in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

It is suggested that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Clemson University Methodist Church, P.O. Box 590, Clemson, SC 29631, or to Wake Forest University, School of Medicine, Orthopedics, Attn: Development and Alumni Office,  Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC 27157.

JOAN P. ALLEN  

DECEMBER 5, 1927 – APRIL 17, 2010

PENDLETON, SC –Joan Pennell Allen, age 82, of 398 Micasa Drive, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, SC, on December 5, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Robert Edgar Pennell and Sara Spearman Pennell.  She was a graduate of Winthrop College and the University of Georgia.  Mrs. Allen was a retired public school teacher. 

Survivors include her granddaughter, Ashley Medlin of Easley, SC; and one brother, Dr. James E. Pennell and wife, Jan of Anderson, SC.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Robbie Pennell Medlin.

A private family committal service will be held at Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery.

ZADIE H. WHITAKER

MAY 25, 1921 – APRIL 17, 2010

ANDERSON, SC –Zadie Howell Waldrup Whitaker, age 88, formerly of Mountain Creek Church Road, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2010.

Born in Anderson County on May 25, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Jule Pascal Howell and Gertrude McClain Howell.  She retired from the textiles industry and was a member of Taylor Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church and attended Little Mountain Church of God.

She is survived by her brother, Johnny Howell of Anderson, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by husbands, Harold Waldrup and Samuel L. Whitaker; and sisters: Katherine Wall, Alice Howell, Louise Hall, Blanche Howell, and Virginia Lollis; brothers: Clarence Howell, James Howell, Charles Howell, Franklin Howell, and Leroy Howell. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 4pm on Monday, April 19, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Ray Carver and the Reverend Sam Duncan.  Interment will follow in Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family is at the home of Johnny Howell, Jr., 402 Wentzky Road, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Sunday, April 18, 2010.

EDNA L. POWELL

DECEMBER 7, 1919 – APRIL 17, 2010

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Edna Lee Powell, age 90, wife of the late Ralph Henry Powell, passed away on Saturday, April 17th, at the Agape Hospice House, Conway.

Born on December 7, 1919 in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Clarence & Effie Williams Junkins.  She was a faithful wife for over 50 years and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother; a retired textile worker with the JP Stevens Co.;  and an active, long-time member of Oakwood Baptist Church in Anderson.

Survivors include her daughters:  Judy Riddle and husband, Randy, of Conway, SC, and                               Martha Jo Hall and husband, Neil, of Myrtle Beach, SC; Grandchildren:  Tonya (Randy) Penton, Mike (Shirley) Riddle, Paul (Shawna) Riddle, Mark (Tasha) Hall, and Wendy (Mike) Wilson; Great Grandchildren:  Stephen Penton, Jackson Riddle, Christian Riddle, Kensley Riddle, Margaret Riddle, Benjamin Riddle, Peyton Hall, Morgan Hall, Blaine Wilson and Parker Wilson.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn Smith and brother, Billy Junkins.

A Graveside Service will be held at 2:30 pm on Monday, April 19th, at New Silver Brook Cemetery conducted by the Reverend Randy Riddle and Dr. Benny Speares. Pallbearers are Randy Penton, Stephen Penton, Mike Riddle, Paul Riddle, Mark Hall and Mike Wilson.

The family will receive friends from 1 pm until 2 pm on Monday, April 19th, at The McDougald Funeral Home.

WILLIE NEAL HAMMONDS  

JANUARY 21, 1942 – APRIL 15, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – Willie Neal Hammonds, age 68, of 115 Farmer Street, passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2010.

Born in Anderson, SC, on January 21, 1942, he was a son of the late Marvin Hammonds and Willie Mae Farmer Hammonds.    Mr. Hammonds is survived by his wife, Mary Bridges Hammonds of the home; son, Luke Hammonds of the home; two daughters: Jane Powell and husband, Jim, and Cindy Patterson; mother-in-law, Mildred “Granny” Bridges; eleven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren.  One sister, Brenda Bowen and two brothers, Alfred Hammonds and Junior Hammonds also survive him.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Matthew Lynn Hammonds.

A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 18, 2010, at New Silver Brook Cemetery conducted by the Reverend Scott Vaughn.

WILMA J. BROWN

 April 16, 1925 – April 15, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Wilma Jeanette Yon Erwin Brown, age 85, of Anderson, died Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Willow Creek Living Center in Iva.

Born in Anderson County, SC on April 16, 1925, she was a daughter of the late George Ben Yon and Mattie Sue Campbell Yon.  Mrs. Brown was a 1943 graduate of Starr High School and had retired from Wellington Mill with thirty-eight years of service.  She was a member of the Asbury Baptist Church, the Senior Sunday School class and the Senior Citizens Group of the church.  She was a former member of Starr Baptist Church.

Survivors include sisters: Betty Sanders of Anderson, Mae Wilson of Iva, and Helen Branyon Spradlin of York, SC; stepson: Harold Brown and his wife, Arleen Brown of Anderson; and a grand-stepson, Johnny Brown.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Lester C. Erwin and her second husband, Tommy Brown; a sister: Faye Smith; and two brothers: Jimmy Ray Yon, and George “Bob” Yon.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3:30 pm on Saturday, April 17, 2010 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by Reverend Scotty Hendricks.  Interment will follow in Starr Baptist Church Cemetery. 

The family will be at the home of her sister, Mae Wilson, 206 Hampton Street, Iva, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 2 pm until 3 pm on Saturday April 17, 2010.

WILLIAMSTON, SC – Teresa Jeanette Gilbert, age 51, of 103 Middleton Boulevard, passed away on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Born in Columbia, SC, on July 9, 1958, she was a daughter of Jerry Moon and the late Ruby Steel Moore.  She was a homemaker and a member of West Pelzer Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Timothy Lee Gilbert; her daughters: Tiffany Howard & Tonya Howard; and her father, Jerry Moon.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 16, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Randal Smith.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
