EDWARD F.YOUNG

August 16, 1932 – April 28, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Edward Francis Young, Jr., age 77, 407 Woodfern Circle, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.

Born in Kirkwood, NJ on August 16, 1932, Mr. Young was a son of the late Edward F. Young, Sr., and Laura Ruth Abel Young. He was a United States Air Force veteran, having served in the Korean War.  He was a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He was a supervisor with Western Electric Inc., in St. Louis, MO and was a member of the American Legion and the V. F. W. in Springhill, FL. 

Surviving is his wife of 32 years, Earlene Becker Young of the home; daughters, Elaine Danner and her husband, Darrell of South Carolina, Cheryl Young-Ganahl and her husband William of Missouri and Carol Flannigan of Louisiana; four grandchildren; Kyle, Ryan and Charles Danner and Rachael Hitt;  brother, Fred Young and his wife, Marie of Delaware; sisters, Thelma Shaffer and Dorothy Young of Pennsylvania and many nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Dr. Jack Couch.  Interment will follow in M. J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors by the Campbell Patriots Honor Guard.  Serving as pallbearers will be Steven Young, Donald Young, Mark Kincaid, Kyle, Ryan and Charles Danner.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, May 2, 2010 from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SC Alzheimer’s Association, 4124 Clemson Blvd., Suite L, Anderson, SC 29621.

TOM R. OVERLY

ANDERSON – Thomas Robert Overly, 68, of 406 Edgewater Drive , husband of Carla L. Overly, died Thursday, April 22, 2010 at AnMed Health Medical Center .

Born April 28, 1941 in Englewood , NJ , he was the son of the late L.Robert and Joyce Fields Overly. Tom and Carla retired to Anderson where he enjoyed fishing on Lake Hartwell with his dog, Brianna. He was a Systems Analyst for IBM and member of North Anderson Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Carla L. Overly of the home; daughter, Kathay E. McIver and her husband, Shannon of Anderson; son, Thomas J. Overly and his wife, Karen Wheeler of Liberty ; grandson, Andrew Beam and brother, Edward Overly and his wife, Jeanne of Pendleton.

A Memorial service will be held at North Anderson Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon, May 2 at 3:30 PM with Rev. Jake Young officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

SAMMY MOORE

February 20, 1953 – April 27, 2010

STARR, SC - Sammy Moore, age 57, husband of Lora Black Moore of 6610 Highway 81 South, died Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, SC, he was the son of George Milton Moore and Annie Ruth Harrington Moore.  Sammy was an avid hunter and fisherman and a member of Grace Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by his children, Missy Maxner, of Anderson, SC, Chip Maxner of Charleston, SC and Sabrina Duffell of Anderson, SC; grandmother, Mary Brewster Harrington; sister Pam Wilson of Hartwell, GA; eight grandchildren, Christina Adams, Nikki Medlin, Alan Moore, Tristan and Dakota Ferguson, Maranda Lynn-Parke, Jenniffer Barnes and Stephanie Lynn-Gore and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Debbie Moore.

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 30, 2010, at 11:00 am in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel officiated by Pastors Gary Bill and Wes Sampson. 

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Thursday from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

AUGUST 25, 1944 – APRIL 27, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – Linda Hanks, age 65, of Anderson, SC, wife of the late Gene A. Hanks, passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, SC, on August 25, 1944, she was a daughter of Leonard Elgin and the late Louise Taylor Elgin.  She was a homemaker and was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to her father, she is survived by children: Tammy Scarboro of Anderson, Dale Whitfield of Anderson, and Ricky Whitfield of Starr; siblings: Peggy Richards of Easley, Mary Dean, Billy Elgin, Sharon Cross, Carolyn Todd, and Betty Todd, all of Anderson; six grandchildren: Chris Whitfield of Townville, Jody Whitfield and Brandi Scarboro, both of Anderson, Corey Whitfield, Susanna Whitfield, and Emily Whitfield, all of Starr; and five great grandchildren.

In addition to her mother, she was predeceased by two brothers: Junior Page and Jimmy Elgin.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 30, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, conducted by the Reverend Sam Duncan and the Reverend John Cross.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Tammy Scarboro, 1207 Westgate Road, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday, April 29, 2010.

MRS. FAITH P. HOFFMAN

JUNE 24, 1932 – APRIL 26, 2010 

FAIR PLAY, SC – Mrs. Faith Priscilla Hoffman, age 77, of 736 Seminole Pointe Drive, passed away on Monday, April 26, 2010, at AnMed Health Medical Center. 

Born in Long Island, NY, on June 24, 1932, she was a daughter of the late William Ewen and Frances Psota Ewen.  She was a graduate of Smithtown High School in Long Island and retired from AT& T after thirty-six years of service.  Mrs. Hoffman is a member of St. James Episcopal Church. 

Survivors include her husband of forty-three years, John Albert Hoffman; cousins: Joseph Psota of Anderson, SC, and George Psota of Long Island, NY. 

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, and from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 29, 2010.

A Committal Service will be held at 2:00 pm in Pinelawn Memorial Park & Cemetery in Long Island, NY, on Monday, May 3, 2010.

DONNA G. WATKINS

ANDERSON – Donna Gail Watkins, 52, of 108 Debbie B Court, Greenwood, died Sunday, April 25, 2010 at Self Regional Medical Center, Greenwood. 

Born August 1, 1957 in Seneca, she was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Anderson, and attended Northside Baptist Church, Greenwood, where she enjoyed the music ministry.

Survivors include her parents, George L. Watkins, Jr. and Lib Watkins of Anderson; three brothers, George L. “Buddy” Watkins, III (Anolyn) of Hartsville, Thomas Jeffery Watkins (Jane) of Midland, Michigan, and William Brian Watkins (Carolyn) of Pace, Florida; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, conducted by Dr. William Childs. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Magnolia Cemetery, Hartsville. The family will receive friends from 9 until 10 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81. The family is at the home of her parents, 808 Concord Avenue, Anderson.

BILLY T. HOLLY

ANDERSON – Billy Thad Holly, 82 of Anderson, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2010.

Born in Elizabethton, TN, he was the son of the late George J. and Ida K. Holly. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. Mr. Holly was a retired District Manager with Bi-Lo. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 62 years, George Ann Holly of the home; two daughters, Becky Williams and Bob of Anderson, Bunny Shore and husband, Greg of Anderson. He was “Granddaddy” to four grandchildren, Ashley Williams of Greenville, Joshua Gregory, Justin Thad, and Christopher Lee Shore of Anderson; three great grandchildren, Brad Leigh Robinson, Keifer and Carley Shore of Anderson; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Holly of Huntsville, Alabama.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ret. Col. George J. Holly, and sisters, Edna Williams and Dorothy Large.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, conducted by Dr. William Childs. Burial will be Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home of Bunny and Greg Shore, 417 Holly Ridge Drive.

CAITLYN E. RAY

ANDERSON – Caitlyn Elizabeth Ray, 16, of 117 Arbor Lane, died Sunday, April 25, 2010. 

Born July 29, 1993 in Anderson, she was the daughter of Tracy Shannon Ray and Amee Elizabeth Wilson Ray. She was a 9th grade student at T L Hanna High School where she was a band member and a member of the Spanish Club. She also attended New Spring Church. 

Surviving are her parents, Tracy and Amee Ray of Anderson; brother, Austin Chase Ray of the home; paternal grandmother, Velma Ray of Belton; maternal grand parents, Shelby Skelton of Belton and Steve Wilson of TN; paternal great grandmother, Margaret Elgin of Williamston and maternal great grand parents, Amos and Lib Partain of Williamston. She was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Leroy Ray. 

Funeral service will be held at 12 noon Wednesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 8pm at the Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 N.

The family is at the home of her Aunt, Michelle Owens, 330 Brook Road, Belton.

MARY Y. MC CURRY

 September 6, 1937 – April 25, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Mary Ethel York McCurry, age 72, wife of James Robert McCurry of 2309 Whitehall Road, passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Hart County, GA on September 6, 1937, Mrs. McCurry was a daughter of the late Walt York and Myrtie Ann Saylors York Smith.  She worked at Appleton Mills for 15 years and later retired from BASF with 20 years of service.  She was an avid bowler in the Senior League, enjoyed cooking and cake decorating.  She was a member of Covenant Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of the home; sons, Randy McCurry; Tony McCurry and his wife, Candace of Anderson; brothers, William York of Starr, Herman York of Anderson and Howard Smith of Georgia; sisters, Elizabeth Lewis, Mildred Smith and Frances Ann Fowler, all of Georgia; four grandchildren, Miranda Dalton, Tina Burton, Little Tony McCurry and Amanda McCurry; eight great-grandchildren, Gena, Kyle, Justin, Cole, Wyatt, Hannah, Braden and Cannon.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Dewitt York and Joe Beasley.

The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Steve Silvey.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm before the service.

Anderson, SC – William C. Wilson, age 76, of 435 Old Asbury Road, passed away Friday, April 23, 2010.

Born February 22, 1934, William was a son of the late Curry and Mayzelle Powell Wilson. He retired from the textile industry and was a Baptist.

Survivors include a son, William C. Wilson, Jr. of Charleston, SC; a daughter, Tonya Wilson of Anderson, SC; two step-sons, Andy and Jason Davis, both of Anderson, SC; two brothers, Douglas R. Wilson of Perry, GA and Gary S. Wilson of Jonesboro, GA; one sister, Terry Aldridge of Whittier, NC; one granddaughter, Krimson Brown and one great-grandson, Campbell Alton Martin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Sara Osborne and Sybil Jones.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverends John Daniel and  Ken Whitt. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

TOWNVILLE, SC – Dorothy Hale McAdams, age 84, of 119 McAdams Road, wife of the late James Benjamin McAdams, passed away on Friday, April 23, 2010.

Born July 23, 1925, in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late William Lewis Hale and Minnie Davis Hale.  She was a beautician and a member of Double Springs Baptist Church. 

Survivors include her sons: Ronny McAdams, Ricky McAdams and wife, Kathy, and Reggy McAdams, all of Townville; six grandchildren: Amy Kelly, Dara Jordan, Josh, Jera, Hannah, and Caleb McAdams; six great grandchildren: Amber Simpson, Erica and Austin Hix, Shana McAdams, Jayda Kelly, and Sydney Harrison.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Terry Lyn McAdams; brothers: Calvin Hale, Rufus Hale, Lewis Hale, Marvin Hale; sisters: Julia Mae Welborn, Gaynelle Flynn, Irene Snipes, Jean Cromer, Alma King, Eunice Richardson, and Ethel Davis.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 26, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Daryle Hawthorne, the Reverend David Blizzard, the Reverend Kyle Caudell.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Helen Brock

April 4, 1932 – April 23, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Helen Sylvene Cole Purdy Brock, age 78, of Anderson, died Friday, April 23, 2010, at her residence.

Born in Townville, she was a daughter of the late Hurbert Calhoun Cole and Bertie Dobbins Cole.  She graduated from Townville High School in 1951.  Mrs. Brock was employed by F. W. Woolworth for over thirty years as a Bookkeeper and Assistant Manager. She was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church where she was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School class and a choir member.

Survivors include her sons, Freddy Purdy and his wife, Rita, Anderson, and Randy Purdy and Mary, Honea Path; five grandchildren, Christopher, Derek, Haley, Casey and Kevin; brother, Clayton Cole, Anderson; and sisters, Polly Morgan, Woodruff, and Emily Whitten, Anderson, and special friends, Lena Brewster and Pat Thomason.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, J. Furman Purdy and her second husband, Ralph Vickery Brock, brothers, Calhoun Cole and Rolly Cole. 

The Funeral Service will be Sunday, April 25, 2010, at 3:30 PM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Watson and Dr. Don Wilson officiating.

The Senior Adult Sunday School Class of Long Branch Baptist Church will serve as Honorary Escort. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, April 25, 2010, from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM.
