RUBY C. THOMPSON  

FEBRUARY 20, 1948 – JANUARY 1, 2012 

IVA, SC –Ruby Christine Thompson, age 63, resident of 120 Sunset Drive, passed away at her home on Sunday, January 1, 2012.

Born February 20, 1948, in Abbeville, SC, she was formerly employed by the Electrolux Corporation and was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church in Lowndesville.  Mrs. Thompson was an avid gardener.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie Thompson, of the home; sons: Billy Lewis of Greenwood, SC, and Chris Lewis & wife, Heather, of Iva, SC; siblings: Roy Morrow & wife, Debbie, of Lincolnton, GA, Janet Yeargin and husband, Paul, of Lowndesville, SC, and Janice Burdette and husband, Carroll, of Iva, SC; four grandchildren: Carson, Brayden, Madison, & Dalton Lewis; one great grandchild, Braxten Ricketts; eleven nephews, eight nieces, twelve great nephews, & five great nieces also survive.  She was predeceased by her father, Roy Franklin Morrow; and a brother, Doug Morrow. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at Smyrna United Methodist Church, Lowndesville, conducted by the Reverend Eric Shepard and the Reverend Shawn Armstrong.  Burial will follow in the Smyrna Cemetery.

The family is at the home and will receive friends at Smyrna United Methodist Church from 12:30 pm until 2pm on Wednesday, prior to the service.

JOHN PRESTON UNDERWOOD

JULY 4, 1932 – DECEMBER 30, 2011 

John Preston Underwood, 79, of Belton, went home to heaven on Friday, December 30, 2011 at his residence.  Born in Greenup, Illinois, he was son of the late Walter E. and Cordelia Brandenburg Underwood.  For over 33 years he was a most devoted husband to his wife, Frances Ellen Underwood, mother of his children. 

John retired at the rank of Tech Sergeant after a distinguished 21 year career as a Missile Maintainer, Radio Repairman and Combat Controller in the United States Air Force.  A Korean War veteran, he accomplished more than 200 jumps as a Master Paratrooper during his military career. He loved his country with a passion!  In addition he worked for 15 years for the Michelin Corporation in Greenville. John dearly loved and supported his church, Big Creek Baptist Church of Williamston.

John’s legacy is continued by sons Frederick E. Cooper of Hendersonville, N.C., and Chaplain, Lt. Col. Ron Underwood (Paulette) of Sumter; daughters Cathy F. Matheny (John) of Williamston, Jonnie Ellen Lagrifolle of Williamston, Kimberly Ruth Keepfer (Scott) of Williamston, Victoria Jane Hartley (Ray) of Myrtle Beach, and Carol Lyn Chandler of Anderson; nieces Jeannie Duke and Kaye Beatty, both of Greenville; and loving friend and companion Johnnie Bell of Williamston. John also is survived by 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Walter Underwood, and a sister, Betty Merz. 

The service celebrating the life of Mr. Underwood will be held on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at 3 PM at the Big Creek Baptist Church of Williamston, with the Rev. Mitch Gambrell officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the church on Monday from 1 PM-2:30 PM.

MRS. MARY ANN SIMPSON  

September 5, 1938 - December 30, 2011

Mrs. Mary Ann Simpson, 73, of Pendleton, died on Friday, December 30, 2011.    Born in Laurens County, SC, she was a daughter of the late James Harvey Malpass and Florence Katherine Craine Malpass. 

Mrs. Simpson was employed for many years at BI-LO in Pendleton where she greeted all customers with her sweet smile.  In later years, she retired from the textile industry.  

Survivors include her devoted daughters, Patricia Holland of Anderson, SC and Linda Denz of Port St. Lucie, FL; sisters, Ida Davis and Claudia Quiram; brothers, Michael and Johnny Malpass.   She is also survived by five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was twice married; first to Ross Newman Hughes and then to the late Mickey Simpson.    

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her beloved son, Stephen Ross Hughes; brothers, Harvey, Charles, and Calvin Malpass and sister, Martha Calvert. 

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, January 2, 2012 from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. with the funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel with Rev. Andy Hester officiating.  Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Clemson, SC. 

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Pat Holland, 1309 Old Gantt Mill Road, Anderson.

RICK WEISS

ANDERSON- Richard Kenneth "Rick" Weiss, Sr., 67, of Anderson, husband of JoAnn Eyler Weiss, died Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born July 30, 1944 in Philadelphia, PA he was the son of the late Floyd and Ada Bardsley Weiss. He was a graduate of Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Rick was retired from Electrolux North America where he was the Director of Industrial Design. He has a strong love for his family and his joy was being Pop-Pop to his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, JoAnn Weiss of the home, son, Richard K. Weiss, Jr. of Anderson, daughter, Dawn Hedrick of Cincinnati, OH and grandchildren, Madison Weiss, Bailey and Jake Hedrick, and sister, Virginia Mae Dollings of Jessup, MD.

Memorial services will be held at 2 PM, Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 North. The family will greet guests immediately following the service.

ANNA D. SHIRLEY

SEPTEMBER 8, 1921 – DECEMBER 28, 2011

ANDERSON, SC –Anna Dean Shirley, age 90, wife of the late LeRoy Shirley, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born September 8, 1921, at Dean’s Station in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late James Fred Dean and Leila Catherine Reid Dean. Mrs. Shirley was a homemaker and was of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include nephews: Herbert Dean Hall of Anderson, SC, Thomas Clinkscales Hall of Anderson, SC, and James Sanders of Franklin, NC; and nieces: Andrea Dean Kirby and Wendy Dean Sprouse, both of FL.   She was a predeceased by her parents; her husband; her sisters: Virginia Dean Sanders, Ethel Dean, and Juanita Dean Hall; and her brothers: James F. Dean and Thaddeus H. Dean.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11am on Friday, December 30, 2011, at Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Reverend Caroline East Berardi.

The family would like to acknowledge the staff of the Rainey Hospice House for the genuine care given to Mrs. Shirley.

PAULINE R. JOHNSON

ANDERSON, SC - Pauline Roof Johnson, 93, of 203 Sweet Gum Trail, died Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at  the Rainey Hospice House.  

She was the last of 11 children of the late David Wertz Roof and Beatrice Ayers Roof.  She was predeceased by her husband, Garven Eugene Johnson; her oldest son, Garven Eugene Johnson Jr., and her grandson, Garven Eugene Johnson III and his wife Teresa.  She was born in Columbia on November 3, 1918 and lived near Elmwood Avenue in Columbia. She worked as a secretary for Larry Kight and as an administrative assistant for the FAA office at the Columbia airport until she retired.  She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Anderson and St. Marks United Methodist Church while she lived in Columbia.   

She is survived by a daughter, Carol J. Webb and her husband, Thomas Lee Webb of Anderson; son, Donald Ayers Johnson of Columbia; daughter-in-law, Junella Johnson of Middleburg, FL; 4 grandchildren, Tamara Lynn Webb of Lawrenceville, GA,  Thomas William Webb  and his wife, Shannon of Alpharetta, GA, Judson Johnson of Middleburg FL, Clifton Johnson of  Tulare, CA, and 4 great grandchildren, Danielle and Jarred  Johnson and  Luke and Tyler Webb. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. 

Funeral service will be held at 11am Friday at Sullivan King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel  with William R. West, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 til 8pm at the residence, 203 Sweet Gum Trail. 

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, Trinity United Methodist Church of Anderson or St. Marks United Methodist Church of Columbia.

ELEANOR C. GAILEY

JULY 28, 1924 – DECEMBER 26, 2011

IVA, SC – Eleanor Cochran Gailey, age 87, of Iva, died Monday, December 26, 2011, at her home.

Born in Anderson County, she was the widow of the late Cullen Duane Gailey and was the daughter of the late L. Mac and Mary Parker Cochran. She was a graduate of Anderson Girl’s High School and Winthrop College and taught for forty years in Port Arthur, TX, Honea Path, SC, and Iva, SC. She was a longtime member of Good Hope Presbyterian Church where she served as a nursery teacher, youth club teacher, and church historian.

Surviving are a son, Phillip D. Gailey, of Taylors, SC; a daughter, Alice G. Wolfe, of Anderson, SC; a grandson, Jason Davis & wife, Crystal Davis, of Iva, SC; one brother, William Cochran of Seneca, SC; and four great grandchildren.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two brothers: Louis Cochran and Raymond Cochran; and one sister, Helen C. Keaton.

Services conducted by the Reverend Annette Graham were held on Tuesday, December 27, 2011, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.   Memorials may be made to Good Hope Presbyterian Church, 306 Hamilton Street, Iva, SC 29655, or to the charity of one’s choice.

ALICE P. WELBORN

ANDERSON, SC –Alice Perry Welborn, wife of the late William Harper Welborn, passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2011, at her home on East Mauldin Street.

Born July 14, 1913, in Easley, SC, she was a daughter of the late Calvin Oscar Perry and Harriet Dorcus Perry. Mrs. Welborn was a 1938 graduate of Catawba College.  She was affiliated as a tax preparer with her late husband’s law firm until his death in 1972 and in later years was a food demonstrator in various grocery stores.  She was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters: Frances Harriet Ferrene & husband, Otto, of Hilton Head, SC, Catherine Alice ‘Kitty’ Moore & husband, Patrick, of Highlands, NC, and Nancy Perrie Whitaker and husband, Ken, of Denton, TX; seven grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren.  In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, December 27, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Elwood Orr and Dr. Johnny F. McKinney

The family will receive friends from 1pm until 2pm, prior to the service. A family committal service will be held in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

BROWN ROBERTS

ANDERSON - Brown Yarbourgh Roberts, 82, of 104 Marion Street, died Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at AnMed Medical Health Center. 

Born June 14, 1929 in Pelzer, he was the son of the late Clayto Lamar and Jewell Brown Roberts. Brown was a self-employed contract painter and of the Presbyterian Faith. 

Surviving are his wife, Frances Buchanan Roberts of the home; daughter, Sandra R. Beasley of Starr; son, John Roberts of Anderson; 3 grandchildren, Amy Taylor, JoBeth Plott and  Joshua Beasley; 5 great grandchildren, Grayson, Watson and Rowan Taylor and Addison and Graylin Plott; 2 brothers, Clayto Roberts of Greenwood and Smiley Roberts of Anderson and 2 sisters, Sara Edwards of Greenville and Janelle McCurry of Anderson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Xemena Cameron. 

A graveside service will be held at 2pm Wednesday at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Nations officiating. 

The family is at the home of the daughter, Sandra Beasley, 205 Miriam Road, Starr.

JOEL PARNELL

AUGUST 11, 1949 – DECEMBER 20, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC – Joel Dennis Parnell, age 62, husband of the late Susan Ellison Gracely Parnell, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born August 11, 1949, in Anderson, SC, he was a graduate of T.L. Hanna High School and Clemson University. Mr. Parnell retired as an Administrator from the Department of Social Services after thirty-three years of service. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Hazel Ethridge Parnell Brown; sons: Graham Logan Parnell and Joseph Tyler Parnell; sister, Martha Shaw; and two grandchildren: Alexandria Susan Parnell and Joshua Elijah Parnell.  In addition to his beloved wife, he was predeceased by his father, Joe F. Parnell; and a sister, Frances Weyman. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Friday, December 23, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Paul D. Frey.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family is at the home, 2707 East North Avenue, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 1pm until 2pm on Friday, prior to the service. BARBARA FLEMING

March 25, 1935 – December 21, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Barbara Jordan Fleming, age 76, of Anderson, wife of the late James Whitney Fleming, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at the NHC HealthCare in Anderson.

Born in Calhoun Falls, SC on March 25, 1935, Mrs. Fleming was a daughter of the late Asa Stephen Jordan and Alice Roper Jordan.  She was the past owner of Barbara’s Magic Mirror Salon. She was a member of Pope Drive Baptist Church where she attended the Esther Sunday School Class and the Young at Heart Group.

Survivors include her daughter, Regina S. Young and her husband, Jody of Lexington, SC; sister, Brenda Campbell and her husband, Ralph of Calhoun Falls, SC; two grandsons, Jay and Jeff Young and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by six brothers and five sisters.

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 23, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Pope Drive Baptist Church with the Reverends Mack Tester and Doug Bowling officiating.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. 

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the church on Friday from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm.
