JESSE W. CHEEK

ANDERSON- Jesse Wilmont Cheek of Anderson, died Thursday, December 8, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born September 1, 1917 in Westminster, he was the son of the late Earle and Hattie Jane Vernon Cheek. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II serving in the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. He was retired from the Singer Company. Mr. Cheek was a member of Grace Episcopal Church for 50 years and served as Treasurer and Usher. He was a Charter Member of the Thursday Morning Jimmy Ezelle Men's Prayer Group. 

Surviving are his wife, Jo-Atha C. Cheek of Anderson, four sons, Jack W. Cheek (Patricia) of Columbia, Kenneth E. Cheek (Sara) of Anderson, Michael A. Cheek (Beth) of Anderson, J. Stephen Cheek (Susan) of Greenville, 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Harry "Dock" Cheek, Arthur Cheek, Carl Cheek, Johnny Cheek and a sister, Madeline Cheek Maness. 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church with The Rev. John B. Hardaway, IV, The Rev. Tom Davis and Rev. Beryl Rosenberger officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 PM in the Parlor of the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church Good Shepherd Campaign, 711 S. McDuffie Street, Anderson, SC 29624 or Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.

BETTY BOLT PARNELL

ANDERSON- Betty Bolt Parnell, 82, of 1610 Sandy Hollow, widow of the late J. Frank Parnell died Wednesday December 7, 2011 at NHC of Anderson.

Born March 23, 1929 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Ira P. Bolt, Sr. and Neta McClure Bolt. She was a homemaker and a Charter Member of Boulevard Baptist Church. 

Surviving are her three sons, Andy Parnell (Janet) of Simpsonville, John Parnell of Anderson and Jeff Parnell (Beth) of Anderson, two daughters, Amie Mannino (Ernie) of Fairfax, VA and Lesley Parnell of Atlanta, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and brother, Ira P. "Buck" Bolt of Anderson.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Katherine Goode, Frances McLeod, Winona Kerchmar and Florence Thompson and brother, Wilson Bolt.

Following a family committal service, a memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 North with Dr. Johnny McKinney and Rev. Elwood Orr officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the mortuary. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boulevard Baptist Church Faith Fund, 700 Boulevard, Anderson, SC 29621.

MARGIE BROWN

September 22, 1921 – December 6, 2011

PIEDMONT, SC - Margie Elizabeth Stamps Brown, age 90, of 104 Jameson Drive, passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson County, on September 22, 1921, Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late Lloyd Stamps and Lillie Mae Evans Stamps.  She was a homemaker and a member of Wellington Pentecostal Holiness Church. 

Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Morrison and Judy Kellett; brothers, Eugene and Haskell Stamps; sister, Betty Kelly; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.   

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lee Brown; son, David Lee Brown and brother Harold Stamps. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverends Bobby Smith and Phillip Sears officiating.  Interment will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery.

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Judy Kellett, 245 Hales Drive, Anderson, SC and will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

JOHN OWEN

DECEMBER 30, 1958 - DECEMBER 5, 2011

LUMBERTON, NC – John Holman Owen III, age 52, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2011.

Born December 30, 1958, in Anderson, SC, he was a graduate of T.L. Hanna High School and the University of South Carolina.  Mr. Owen was formerly an associate of West Point Pepperrell,   Alamac American Knits, and was presently an associate of Velocity Express Inc. in Lumberton, NC.  He was of the Methodist faith. 

Survivors include a daughter, Kelly Brook Owen, of Elizabethtown, NC; mother, Peggy O’Barr Owen, of Anderson, SC; and a sister, Alison L. Owen, of Anderson, SC.  He was predeceased by his father, J. Holman Owen Jr.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park conducted by Dr. Don R. Cox.

R. JOHN VANKLEECK  

ANDERSON- Russell John VanKleeck, 86, husband of the late Elizabeth VanKleeck, died Monday December 5, 2011 at NHC of Anderson. 

Born December 31, 1924 in Binghamton, NY, he was the son of the late Seba Golden and Marian Burton VanKleeck. He was a newspaper publisher. 

Surviving are his daughters, Katrina Krenick of Anderson, Elaine Tarsi of Freemont, IN, son, John M. VanKleeck of Simpsonville, three grandchildren: Amy Beth Tarsi, Christopher James Tarsi, and Eric Michael VanKleeck, two great grandchildren: Abby Tarsi and Anthony Tarsi, step granddaughter, Sara Coker and special daughter, Linda Weyant of Middletown, NY.

Services will be held at 10 AM, Friday December 7 at Mount Carmel Church in Middletown, NY. Memorials may be made to the Guilford Historical Society.

CARL W. LARKINS

JANUARY 10, 1937 – DECEMBER 5, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Carl W. Larkins, 74, of the Ebenezer Community died Monday, December 5, 2011, at his residence, surrounded by his family and friends.  Carl was born in Miami, Florida, to the late Mr. and Mrs. George Winston Larkins.  He was a job bidder for Apac, a concrete construction company from which he retired after approximately 30 years of service.  Mr. Larkins held a life time membership in the Amateur Trapshooters Association.   

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, LaVerne Cox Larkins of the home; a son Elmer E. Cox of Anderson; daughters, Ann Marie Cox of Anderson, Mary J. Richardson (Robert) of Anderson, and Betty Oceola of Florida.  Also surviving are four grandchildren, Paul, Lindsay, Erin and Celecia Richardson, all of Anderson.

In addition to parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Richard Larkins.

Services honoring and celebrating the Life of Carl will be held at a later time as announced by the family.  The family will be at the residence.

The family has requested that memorial donations may be made to Interim Healthcare Hospice, 775 Spartan Boulevard, Spartanburg, SC 29301.

ED CLINKSCALES

October 15, 1930 – December 6, 2011

IVA, SC - Earnest “Ed” Edwin Clinkscales, age 81, of 307 W. Jackson Street, passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at the Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.

Born in Iva, SC on October 15, 1930, Mr. Clinkscales was a son of the late John Frank Clinkscales and Sarah Pender Clinkscales.  He was a United States Army veteran having served in the Korean Conflict.  He was a former employee of Jackson Mill and was a farmer for many years.  He was a former member of the American Legion and the Iva Lions Club.  Mr. Clinkscales was a member of Union Baptist Church. 

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Bobbie Wiles Clinkscales; sister, Gladys McMullan and her husband, Horace of Great Falls, SC; several nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by brothers, David Clinkscales and Eugene “Scratch” Clinkscales and a sister, Lucille Campbell. 

The family will receive friends at Union Baptist Church on Thursday from 10:30 am until 12:00 noon with the funeral following at 12:00 noon with Reverend Mike McMillian and Reverend Ronnie Powell officiating.  Interment will follow in Iva City Cemetery. 

The family will be at the residence.

CHARLES R. JOHNSON SR.

MAY 18, 1928 – DECEMBER 5, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Charles Robert Johnson Sr, age 83, beloved husband of Nellie Johnson and resident of 2426 Annandale Drive, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2011, at Anderson Place. 

Born May 18, 1928, in Hart County, GA, he was a son of the late McKinsey Johnson and Belle Taylor Johnson. Following a thirty-one year career as a life insurance agent, Mr. Johnson retired from Liberty Life.  Additionally, he was a member of Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society. He was a charter member of High Praises Church where he was active in the Hospitality Ministry for many years. 

Survivors include his beloved wife, Nellie Getsinger Cobb Johnson, of the home; daughter, Pamela J. Snyder and husband, Darryl, of Snellville, GA; son, Chuck Johnson and wife, Teresa, of Anderson, SC; stepson, David Cobb and wife, Beth, of Anderson, SC; sister, Hazel J. Clark of Pickens, SC; nine grandchildren: Stacey Fontenot (husband, Jamie), Tonya Camp (husband, Jon), Sonya Dunn (husband, Cory), J.D. Hughes (wife, Claire), Derrick Johnson (wife, Crystal), Blake Johnson (wife, Jenna), Mattie Cobb, Will Cobb, and Sam Cobb; and eleven great-grandchildren.   In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Dellie Harris Johnson; and two brothers: Ervin Johnson and Howard Johnson. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at High Praises Church conducted by the Reverend Chris Sustar, the Reverend Cecil Campbell, and the Reverend Mike Cothran.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family is at the home and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6pm until 8pm on Tuesday.

PAULINE RHODES EDGAR

July 16, 1924 – December 4, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC - Pauline Rhodes Edgar, age 87, formerly of Anderson, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson County, SC on July 16, 1924, Mrs. Edgar was a daughter of the late Homer Andrew Rhodes and Mary Cartee Rhodes.  She had been employed with Wellington Mill and was a homemaker.  She was a member of Varennes Heights Baptist Church and was active as long as her health permitted. 

Survivors include her daughter, Janice Ashworth and her husband, Thomas of Anderson; sisters, Catherine Krempel and Ressie Campbell; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  

She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Robert “Bob” Lee Edgar; her parents; brothers, Homer “Billy” Rhodes and Jimmy Rhodes and sister, Edna Arnold. 

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm with a Graveside Service following at 2:30 pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Dr. Kirt Mitchell officiating.

MEADIE BOWEN

October 5, 1927 – December 3, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Meadie Develle Bowen, age 84, of 100 Cynthia Drive, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson County, SC, he was a son of the late Lester D. Bowen and Margie Brooks Bowen.  Mr. Bowen proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II in Japan.  He was a retired manager of A & P Grocery Store, served on the Board of the West Anderson Water District and was former Treasurer of Centerville Volunteer Fire Department.  He was a faithful member of New Prospect Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.   He loved deeply his Saviour, family, and friends.   There is no doubt, Kate, children and grandchildren has an “angel” watching over them.  

Surviving is his loving wife of 62 years, Kate Davis Bowen; beloved sons, Phillip D. Bowen (Jackie) of Littleton, CO, Steve M. Bowen (Dale) of Anderson, SC and David H. Bowen (Darlene Sammons) of Townville, SC; brother, Calvin Bowen (Kay); sister, Sylvia B. Reed, all of Anderson, SC; Six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and his uncle, Cecil Bowen.  

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Mildred (Mickey) Campbell and Bernice Sue Bowen. 

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 5, 2011 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Dr. Tony Smith and Rev. Tom Turner officiating.  Interment will follow in New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm.

BILLY RAY ADAMS

August 13, 1929 – December 2, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Billy Ray Adams, age 82, of Anderson, SC, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in LaFrance, SC, he was a son of the late Joseph Milton Adams and Ruth Iva Moore Adams.  Mr. Adams was a graduate of Pendleton High School and Clemson College.  He proudly served his county in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  He retired from LaFrance Industries and was a member of Zion United Methodist Church where he faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher for 58 years and served in other numerous positions. 

Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Elzora Adams; son, Dennis Adams and his wife, Deborah; daughter, Jennifer Coats and her husband, Wayne; brothers, Johnny Adams and his wife, Linda, Jimmy Adams and his wife, Patricia; sisters, Guynelle Snipes and Imogene McGaha and her husband, Doyle; grandchildren, Aprile Adams and George Tenney, Jenilyn and Matthew Mulkey, Alan and Merebeth Adams and Adam and Kaileigh Coats; a great-granddaughter, Grayson Mulkey. 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Joseph Adams.

A Graveside Service will be held Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Reverend Dr. Shawn Armstrong officiating.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm.
