CHARLES BOWEN READ

April 11, 1950 – January 20, 2013 

ANDERSON, SC - Charles Bowen Read, age 62, of Anderson, SC, passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late Robert Prentice Read and the late Nancy Cooke Read Tucker.  He graduated from Christ Church High School in VA in 1970 and received a BA from NC Wesleyan College in May of 1974. He retired from the Department of Health and Human Services with over 20 years of service.  He was an avid golfer.  Charles was of the Episcopal Faith. 

He is survived by three brothers, H. Cooke, Robin and David Read; and a sister, Rosamond Read Patterson 

The Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 7:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Dwight Greene officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels – Anderson, PO Box 285, Anderson, SC 29622.

SHIRLEY J. RAY

ANDERSON - Shirley Jeanette Ray, 72, of 134 Amberwood Drive, widow of Obie Ray, Jr., passed away Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House, following a courageous fight with cancer.

Born June 13, 1940 in Kingsport, TN, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Nannie Carter Horton. Shirley was a beloved mother and grandmother who lived most of her life in the Kingsport, TN area. Shirley was a retired home health care CNA and member of Sierra Baptist Church. 

Surviving are her 2 sons, Jimmy Harper, Jr. and his wife, Maria of Anderson and Tyler Harper and his fiancé, Felicia of Kingsport, TN; adopted daughter, Stevi Ray of Anderson; 3 grandchildren, Jimmy Harper III, Brooke Wills and Cody Compton; 10 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Ed and Donnie Horton both of Maryland and 2 sisters, Faye Myers of Virginia and Mildred Wild of Delaware. Shirley was preceded in death by her daughter, Penny Wills. 

A memorial service will be held at 4PM Wednesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary with Pastor Rex Simmons officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the Mortuary. There will also be a memorial service for Shirley in Church Hill, TN at a  later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cancer Association of Anderson, 215 E. Calhoun Street, Anderson, SC 29621.

NOREEN GROSS

February 25, 1934 – January 20, 2013 

ANDERSON, SC - Noreen Gross, the cherished and “catered to” only child of Bud and Helen Durick passed from this life on January 20, 2013.  She joins her parents and her beloved husband, Bob Gross to whom she was married for 52 years.

Noreen was born in Newburgh, NY on February 25, 1934.  She graduated from Newburgh Free Academy (thank you Driver’s Ed!) and married Bob Gross on July 11, 1954.  Bob was transferred to South Carolina in 1978 and Anderson became their home.  She retired from the Newburgh School System after 17 years of service and was a member of the Manpower Staff of Anderson.  Noreen was a volunteer for AnMed Health Medical Center.  She was a member St. Joseph’s Church, The Hilltoppers Club, Anderson Country Club, and Senior Solutions.

Noreen is survived by her daughters, Nori Gale, her devoted caregiver, of Anderson and Dianne (Glenn) Thomaris of Elmira, NY; her grandchildren, Brandon (Heather) Gale of Myrtle Beach, SC, Bobby and Marianne Thomaris of Elmira, NY; two cherished cousins who were the sisters she never had, Kay Wagner and Claire Benson of Newburgh, NY.  Survivors also include special cousin, Pat Mullarkey; sisters-in-law, Barbara Canzoneri, Tess Waters, Virginia Gross and Jeanne Gross; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, Kay O’Brien and Ann Kohlmeyer. Her fiery Irish personality will be missed by us all.

The Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at 11:00 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Paul Williams, OFM officiating.  Interment will be held at Gardnertown Cemetery in Gardnertown, NY at a later date.

The family will receive friends prior to the service on Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church from 10:00 am until 11:00 am.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1200 Cornelia Road, Anderson, SC 29621; or Fresh Start, 1484 Pearman Dairy Road, Anderson, SC 29625.

NELL KING

June 3, 1918 – January 17, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Nell Cobb King, age 94, of Anderson, passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Lavonia, GA, she was a daughter of the late Henry Grady Cobb and the late Leila Wilson Cobb.  She retired from Clark Schwebel. She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.  She will be missed by many who affectionately knew her as Granny.

She is survived by her children, Brenda Maddox and Deborah McKinney, both of Anderson; and four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Max L. King; her brother, Ty Cobb; and two sisters, Lucy Cobb and Frances Andrews.

The Graveside service will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 3:30 pm at Dickson Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery in Townville, SC with the Reverends Kurt Stutler and Sam Duncan officiating.  

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home prior to the service on Sunday from 1:00 until 2:30 pm.

LINDA P. HALEY

July 9, 1953 – January 18, 2013

Linda Lee Protas Haley, age 59, of 710 Timberlake Road, Anderson, SC, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Chester, PA, she was the daughter of the late Hillman Protas and the late Judith Barbour Protas.  She received a Master’s Degree in Education and retired as a public school teacher. She was an avid quilter being a member of the Prickly Fingers Quilters Guild. Linda was active with many online melanoma support groups and locally with the AnMed Cancer Support Group, “Surviving The Journey”.

She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Merritt Samuel “Sam” Haley; one son, Brandon P. Haley and his wife Racheal of Birmingham, AL; a brother, Russell Protas of Delaware; one granddaughter, Savannah “Punkin” Haley; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Sunday, January 20, 2013, from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm.  The funeral service will follow in the Chapel of the funeral home at 3:30 pm with Dr. Peter A. Cohen and Reverend Dwight Greene officiating.

HAZEL GIBSON

October 15, 1931 – January 17, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Hazel Lee McAlister Gibson, age 81, of Anderson, passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Ellenburg Nursing Center.

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Jessie Lee McAlister and the late Bessie Lee McAlister. She graduated from Six and Twenty High School.  Hazel retired from Owens Corning Fiberglas after many years of service.  She attended The Bridge Church of The Nazarene in Central, SC. 

She is survived by her son, Steve Gibson and his wife, Mary Robinson Gibson of Central; and two step-grandchildren, Katherine Robinson and Matthew Robinson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Everett Gibson and eleven brothers and sisters.

A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Noon at The Bridge Church of The Nazarene.

Judy B. Patterson

WEST COLUMBIA, SC- Judy Buchanan Patterson, 69, of 108 Quail Field Rd., formerly of Anderson, wife of Douglas E. Patterson, passed away Monday January 14, 2013 at Lexington Medical Center.

Born December 26, 1943 in Anderson, she was the daughter of Jasper James Buchanan, Sr. and the late Margaret Jordan Buchanan. She was a graduate of Anderson Girls High and Forest Business College. Judy was retired from the SC Department of Transportation. She was a member of Lexington Baptist Church and the Patterson Sunday School Class. Judy was a former member of Eureka Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Douglas E. Patterson of the home; daughters, Tonya P. Landrith and her husband, Wayne of Chapin, and Christina P. Atkinson and her husband, Jason of West Columbia; grandchildren, Carson Atkinson and James Landrith; father, Jasper Buchanan of Anderson; brother, James "Buck" Buchanan and his wife, Marilyn of Lauren; nieces, Kim Barnett of Lexington, Meredith Liner of Greenwood and nephew, Bradley Buchanan of Charlotte, NC.

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Saturday at Eureka Baptist Church, 1600 Hwy 29 North, Anderson, SC, 29621 with Dr. Ron Fousek and Dr. Michael Turner officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday at Lexington Baptist Church, 308 East Main St., Lexington, SC, 29072 and from 1 until 2:30 PM Saturday at Eureka Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family is at the residence.

ED SINGLETON

LA FRANCE - Thomas Edward "Ed" Singleton, 82, of LaFrance, widower of Marie Stone Singleton, passed away Monday, January 14, 2013.

Born in Pendleton, he was the son of the late Virgil and Charity Thomas Singleton, Sr. He was retired auto mechanic from Singleton Wheel and Alignment. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in both WWII and the Korean War. He was of the Baptist faith. 

Ed is survived by his children, James Singleton, Pamela Cavanaugh, Larry Singleton, Linda Gillespie, Wayne Rainey, Ronnie Bryant and Diane Adams; step children, Joan Parker, Brenda Dean and Cheryl Leutbecher; 25 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Randolph Bryant; 2 sisters, Willie Belle Graham and Sarah Singleton and 4 brothers, Gordon, V.M., Clyde and Carl Singleton.

A graveside service will be held at 2pm Thursday at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Parker officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 until 6pm at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 Hwy 81 N. The family is at the home of his daughter, Pamela Cavanaugh, 123 Allendale Circle, Anderson.
