SONJA CAMPBELL ROE

April 1, 1964 – January 6, 2013

IVA, SC - Sonja Lynn Campbell Roe, age 48, of Iva, SC, passed away on Sunday, June 6, 2013, at her residence. 

Born in Anderson, SC she was the daughter of Kenneth Buchanan, of Anderson and the late Dorothy Dunn Buchanan. She loved her grandchildren very much and was affectionately known as Grammy.  She was loved by all who knew her.  Sonja was a member of West Anderson Church of God; she was a faithful member who loved her church very much.

She is survived by her children, Matthew Campbell and his wife Brittany of Anderson and Jennifer Campbell of Pendleton; six grandchildren, Morrighan Campbell, Skye Campbell, Destany Page, Isaiah Henson, Acacia Campbell and Janiya Sargen. 

The Graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Dr. Wendell Bannister and Reverend Mark Daniel officiating. 

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

RUTH RAMSAY CHENEY

May 12, 1919 – January 7, 2013 

ANDERSON, SC - Ruth Ramsay Cheney, age 93, of Anderson, passed away on Monday, January 7, 2013 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late J. Bertrand Ramsay and the late Martha Harney Ramsay.  She received a Bachelor’s Degree from the General Assembly’s Training School for Lay Workers in Richmond, VA.  She retired from Presbyterian Church USA Coastal Carolina Presbytery as an associate director of Christian Education.  After retiring she was instrumental in starting the Calabash Presbyterian Church in Sunset Beach, NC.  In 1999 Mrs. Cheney moved to Anderson and lived at Anderson Place for several years.  She was a member of Young Memorial ARP Church.

She is survived by her children, Philip M. Cheney of Anderson, SC, Daniel O. Cheney of Reidsville, NC, Andrew B. Cheney of Alameda, CA, Johanna Cheney Bernhardt of Durham, NC and Dr. Emily R. Cheney of Athens, GA; a sister, Mary Lee Ticktin of Rock Hill, SC; 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Franklin Cheney, Jr.; and two brothers, Bertrand P. Ramsay and A. Ogden Ramsay.

A memorial service will be held on Friday at 11 am at Young Memorial ARP Church with Reverend Dr. Emily R. Cheney and Reverend L. Thomas Richie officiating.  The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 am until 11 am in the Rainey Room at Young Memorial ARP Church. A committal service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Spartanburg, SC at 3:00 pm.

FRED LEDFORD  

July 17, 1923 – January 6, 2013

FAIR PLAY, SC - Fred Clenton Ledford, age 89, of 208 Ledford Farm Road, Fair Play, SC. Passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at his residence. 

Born in Townville, SC he was a son of the late Homer Hilton Ledford and the late Amanda Singleton Ledford. He was a farmer in the Townville area, he raised cattle and cotton and for many years he also raised and sold produce.   He retired from the Le Tourneau Manufacturing Company in Toccoa, GA after 14 years of service.  In recent years Fred was very involved in Real Estate.  During the depression he was a member of the Civil Conservation Corp.  He proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Navy as part of the Omaha Beach Invasion. Fred enjoyed blue grass music at Jack’s Pickin Parlor.  He was a member of Double Springs Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Wrenn Ledford of the home; a step-daughter, Teresa Summers and her husband Kevin of Anderson, SC; a sister, Florence Roberts and her husband Bill of Anderson, SC; five grandchildren, Zachary Ledford, Natasha Clinton, Kylie Chastain, Amie Ledford and Angel Milam and 10 great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Sandy.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sons, Lamar and Randy Ledford; seven brothers, Arthur, Jess, Millard, Will Ed, Jim, Frank and Charlie Ledford; and three sisters. Grace Brown, Olivia Crooks and Frances Turk.

The Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at 2:00 pm at Double Springs Baptist Church with Reverend Daryle Hawthorne and Reverend Kyle Caudell officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. 

The family will be at the home and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

METRO “SAM” FEDAK

August 31, 1919 – January 3, 2013

Metro “Sam” Fedak, 93, of Palm Bay, FL, formerly of Anderson, SC passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2013.

Born in Cleveland Ohio, he proudly served his country  in the U.S. Army during World War II.  He is of the Catholic Faith.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ellen Cartee of Sebastian, FL and a son, Walter Fedak of Hillsborough, NJ. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Florence Fedak in 1998 and a son, David Fedak.

The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at 11:00 am in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home.  Military Honors and entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

CAROL WHEELER

OCALA, FL – Carol Damron Wheeler, 75, of Ocala, FL, died Thursday, January 3, 2012 at AnMed Health North Campus in Anderson.

She was a graduate of the University of Georgia and taught middle school English for 36 years. She was a faithful mother, grandmother and mother-in-law.

Survivors include her daughter, Kathy Dobbins and husband, Tom of Townville; and a grandson, Troy Dobbins.

LOIS TABOR

June 5, 1914 – January 4, 2013 

GREENVILLE, SC - Lois Peele Tabor, age 98 1/2, of Greenville, SC, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2013 at her residence.

Born in Anderson, SC she was the daughter of the late John C. Peele and the late Nanny Smith Peele.  She worked at Owens Corning Fiberglas for over 25 years.  She was a member of the OES Chapter 130 in Anderson, the Owens Corning Lady Retiree Club and the Council on Aging in Flagler Beach, FL.  She was a member of Disciples United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy T. Elliott and her husband Reverend Nick Elliott of Simpsonville, SC; four grandchildren, Mark Tabor, Alyson Darby Haley, Kristal Hicks Speakman, and Mikelle Hicks Porter; two step-grandchildren, Jill Reames, and Nick Elliott, Jr.; three great-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren; and beloved niece, Hazel Davis. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Marvin Tabor; son, Ted Tabor; two brothers, Andrew and James Peele; three sisters, Cleo Craft, Jessie Mae Duncan and Estelle Brown; and a daughter- in-law, Trudy Tabor.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Nick Elliott officiating.  Interment will follow at Old Silver Brook Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends on Sunday, prior to the service from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm.

VIVIAN JEWELL BAKER

January 14, 1936 – January 3, 2013 

ANDERSON, SC - Vivian Sue Jewell Baker, age 76, of 204 Green Chase West, died peacefully, surrounded by all her loved ones on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Batesville, MS, she was a daughter of the late Frank Jerry Weeks and the late Claris Marie Morrell Weeks.  She retired from Wamsutta after many years of service.  She was a member of River of Life Church of God.  Vivian spent her life serving others and especially her family.

She is survived by her children, Darryl Jewell (Mandi) of Anderson, SC, Craig Jewell, (Karen) of Anderson, SC, Daphne Mackey (Dennis) of Easley, SC, Ronald Jewell (Teresa), Sherry Elqadi, all of Anderson, Roy Baker (Barbara) of Jessup, GA, Gary Baker (Laura) of Nashville, TN, and Kathy Rice (Jerry) of Calhoun, GA; brothers, Jerry Weeks of Herculaneum, MO, John Larry Weeks of Coldchester, VT, David Lynn Weeks of Pope, MS and George Collins Weeks of Grenada, MS; sisters, Leardell Jacobs of Tupelo, MS, Frankie Dunn of Memphis, TN, Virginia Mae Jenkins of Portland, MS and Barbara Dell Beard of Batesville, MS; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Elmer Marion Jewell, her second husband, Roy C. Baker; and four sisters, Helen Ruth Wright, Bernis Prestage, Carolyn Palmertree and Flora Weeks. 

The funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Baker will be held on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 3:00 pm at the River of Life Church of God with Reverend Kevin Jones and Reverend Jerry Rice officiating.  Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday, January 5, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

MILDRED COPELAND REID  

ANDERSON - Mildred Copeland Reid, 97, of 4067 Anderson Mill Road, Spartanburg, formerly of Kates Street, Anderson, widow of Ben W. Reid, died Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born May 22, 1915 in Belton, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Fred and Miriam Fowler Copeland. She was a retired employee of Equinox Mill and was a member of Duncan Church of Christ.

Survivors include two daughters, Nettie R. Kinley of Spartanburg and Wilma Stuart of Killeen, TX; eight grandchildren; a number of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Ellen Eustace and Linda Gail Beaty; one sister, Nettie Breazeale; and three brothers, A.F. Copeland, Jr., Billy Copeland, and Richard Copeland.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Evangelist Jon Mitchell and Elder Michael White. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence in Spartanburg.

W. SUE TAYLOR

April 5, 1930 – January 2, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - W. Sue Taylor, age 82, of Anderson, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at her residence.

Born in Hartwell, GA, she was a daughter of the late Edward Speer and the late Ellen B. Osborne Speer.  She retired from Rhodes Furniture as an interior decorator and later worked for a number of years at Terry’s Furniture.  She was a member of Taylor Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church.  

She is survived by her children, Marion E. Taylor and his wife Christine of Wilkes County, NC, Tim Taylor and his wife Cathy of Anderson, SC and Tony Taylor and his wife Lisa of Anderson, SC; two sisters, Billie Faye Hill and Martha Jo Massey, both of Anderson, SC; seven grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her spouse Rufus Marion Taylor; and a brother, Coy Gene “Buddy” Speer. 

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 4:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Harry Osborne and Reverend Brent Lollis officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. 

The family will be at the home of Tim and Cathy Taylor, 405 Meadow Park Drive, Anderson and will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, prior to the service from 2:00 pm until 3:30 pm.

JOEL MIZE

July 14, 1929 – January 1, 2013

STARR, SC - Joel Amos Mize, age 83, of 114 Robinwood Circle, Starr, SC, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at AnMed Health Medical Center. 

Born in Greenwood County, he was the son of the late John W. Mize and the late Dolly Rea Tucker Mize. Joel proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1951 – 1953 during the Korean Conflict. He worked for over 29 years as Survey Party Chief at South Carolina Transportation Department.  He was a member of Anderson VFW.

He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Jean Standard of Belton, SC, Agnes Marlene Harris of Anderson, SC, Patsy Ann Burton of Toccoa, GA and Nancy Jean Campbell of Starr, SC; 19 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl, Odesser Clemons Mize; a daughter, Raynell Odesser Cheek; a sister, Janie Gilbert and a brother, James Mize. 

The graveside service will be held on Friday, January 4, 2013, at 3:00 pm at M.J. “Dolly” Copper Veterans Cemetery with Reverend Mike Harrell officiating. 

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends on Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

HERMAN L. ROBINSON

November 1, 1925 – January 1, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Herman Lanier Robinson, age 87, of Anderson, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Starr, SC, he was the son of the late Joseph Pickens Robinson, Sr. and the late Essie Jane Shirley Robinson.  He was a graduate of Greenwood High School.  He proudly served his country in the Army, serving in the 101 Airborne Division and received a Purple Heart after injuries during the Battle of the Bulge. He worked for many years for Greenwood Mills at the Harris Plant and the Ninety Six Plant. He later retired from the BASF plant in Anderson, SC.  He was a Mason with Jappa Lodge in Greenwood.  Herman was a member of Pope Drive Baptist Church. 

He is survived by his children, Cheryl Starwalt and her husband Doug and Barry Robinson and his wife, Tina; a sister, Hazel Rhodes; a brother, Harold “Sam” Robinson; five grandchildren, Nathan Starwalt, Alana McAbee, Chandlar Starwalt, Christian Robinson, Bryan Robinson; and two great-grandchildren, Teagan McAbee and Liam McAbee. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Lucille Davis Robinson; three sisters, Nellie R. Jones, Virginia Ouzts, and Mary Chandler; and two brothers, Joseph P. Robinson, Jr. and John “Jack” Robinson. 

The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 4, 2013, at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Mack Tester officiating.  Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. 

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm at the funeral home.

THOMAS L. BRIDGES, JR.

January 23, 1927 – January 1, 2013 

Thomas Luther Bridges, Jr., age 85, of 302 Lloyd Drive, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013, surrounded by the love of his family at the Fellowship Health and Rehab.  Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Thomas L. Bridges, Sr., and the late Nellie Lyall Dillard Bridges.  For 57 years he was married to his first wife, Mary Frances Radford Bridges until her death.  

Mr. Bridges attended Clemson University and was a veteran of the US Army, serving in the Pacific during WW II.  For many years he was in various supervisory roles within the textiles industry, having worked for Abney Mills, Dan River Mills, and retired from Springs Industries.  He also worked for Michelin, and served as a school crossing guard at Concord Elementary School for 9 years.  For 39 years, Tom was a high school football official and in his earlier years was a Silver Glove Boxer.  He was a devoted and faithful member of Forest Hill Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.  

Left to carry on his legacy are his wife, Betty Byrum Bridges of the home; a son Tony Bridges and his wife, Janet, of Hartwell, GA; 2 grandchildren,  Chanda Bridges Lawson and her husband Ben; and Laurie Coggins and husband, Christian; 3 great grandsons, Tanner Stansell Lawson, Camden Bridges Lawson and Christian Smith Coggins.  In addition to his parents and his first wife, Mr. Bridges was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Bridges and a sister Elise Bridges Kay.    

The service to celebrate and honor the life of Mr. Thomas Bridges will be held at the Forest Hill Baptist Church on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 1 PM, with Rev. Tom Owen and Dr. Dean Weaver officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, January 4, 2013, from 6 PM until 8 PM.
