JOYCE DAVIS

July 21, 1953 – February 21, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Joyce Marie Davis, age 59, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 21, 2013.

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Marshall Franks and the late Hazel Whitfield Franks.  Joyce was a faithful member of Iva First Assembly of God.  She enjoyed Sunday School and the ladies meetings and attended both as long as her health permitted.

She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Davis of Trooper, PA; her daughter, Tonya Davis, of the home; her brothers, Sammy Franks and his wife Tammy and Mark Franks and his wife Barbara, all of Anderson; her sister, Teresa Franks, of Anderson; her father and mother-in-law, Alfred and Frances Davis; and her sister-in-law, Helen Davis.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Davis

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Iva First Assembly of God with Reverend Charlie Howell and Reverend Shane Duncan officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will be at the home of her brother, Mark, 102 N. Prevost Street, Anderson, SC and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday, February 23, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

JACKIE “BOOTS” GAMBRELL

June 23, 1941 – February 14, 2013

PENDLETON, SC - Jackie Ann Gambrell, age 71, of 916 Chester Circle, Pendleton, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at her residence. 

Born in LaFrance, SC, she was the daughter of the late Jack Burdette and the late Vera Whitfield Burdette Payne.  Jackie was a former employee of Milliken and retired from Clemson University after many years of service. She was an active supporter of The Susan G. Komen Foundation and was a member of Fants Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by her loving husband, William Doug Gambrell; her children, Rick Gambrell and his wife Beth, Sherri Fowler and her husband Stuart and Nancy Martin; a sister, Jean Martin; and three grandchildren, Zarah Fowler, Douglas Lee Gambrell and Amy Gambrell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Fred Payne; and a son, David Gambrell.

The Graveside Service will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2013, at 3:00 pm at Fants Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Gene Burdette officiating.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends on Saturday, February 16, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home.

SUSIE HAYNES

August 27, 1953 – February 13, 2013

ANDERSON, SC  - Wilma Susan Haynes, age 59, of 1705 Holly Street, made it home safely to her Heavenly Home on Wednesday, February 13, 2013. 

Born in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late William Talmadge Haynes and the late Mildred Louise Scroggs Holcombe.  She was an avid Clemson Tiger and Elvis fan.  She was a member of Carswell Baptist Church.

She is survived by her brother, Steve Haynes and his wife Karen; a sister, Sara Haynes Brewster; and nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Joyce McAlister. 

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at The McDougald Funeral Home from 9:30 am until 10:30 am.  The Funeral Service will follow in the Chapel at 11:00 am with Reverend Jerry Gray officiating.  Interment will follow at Carswell Baptist Church Cemetery.

GRACE RAMEY

July 17, 1915 – February 13, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Grace James Ramey, of Anderson, passed away on February 13, 2013 at National Health Care of Anderson. 

Born in Hart County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Luther James and the late Sara Jane Phillips James.  She retired from J.P. Stevens after 12 years of service.  She was a member of Taylor Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church where she had perfect attendance for most of her life.  She was a Sunday School Teacher for over 75 years and was a member of the Emma Lay Circle, where she had served as the Secretary and Treasurer and Program Chairperson. Grace was the oldest member of the church.

She is survived by her children, Marion J. Ramey of Anderson, SC and Jackie R. Ayers and her husband, Henry of Simpsonville; four grandchildren, Jeff Ramey, who was raised in the home, Joe Ayers, Timothy Ayers and Erick Ayers; seven great-grandchildren, Carly, Sam, Walker, Morgann, Peyton, Tre’ and Emmaligh; and special nieces, Etoile Crain, Wanda Buchanan and Judith Watkins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Ramey; four brothers, Curtis, Hoyt, Thad and Albert James; and a sister, Maude Wilbanks.

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 3:30 PM at Taylor Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church with Reverend Ray Buchanan and Reverend Brent Lollis officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. 

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM on Saturday.

JO ANN B. ANDERSON

January 27, 1951 – February 14, 2013

Jo Ann Blakely Anderson, age 62, of 3895 Seminole Avenue, went home to rest in the arms of her Eternal Father on Thursday, February 14, 2013, upon her death at Rainey Hospice House.  Born in Pendleton, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Blakely and the late Hattie Lee Hunnicutt Blakely.  For almost 46 years, she was the loving and devoted wife of Harold Ray Anderson of the residence. 

For the past few years, Mrs. Anderson was a homemaker and in that role received much joy from her family and friends.  In her earlier years, she worked at BASF for 10 years, and also with Wometco Food Services and Blue Ridge Security.  Jo Ann was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her cherished husband, Harold, she is survived by 2 sons, Harold Raymond Anderson and his wife, Shelia, of Spartanburg,  and James R. Anderson of Anderson; 3 brothers, Clyde Tippins of Anderson, Rufus Tippins and his wife, Cleo, of Anderson, and Thomas Blakely and his wife, Vicky of Dewy Rose, GA; 2 sisters, Polly Pierson of Hartwell, and Jeanette Stukes of Iva, SC; 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 24 nieces and nephews also survive.  Mrs. Anderson also leaves behind 2 precious pets, Harley and Daisy. 

The funeral service to honor and celebrate the life of Mrs. Anderson will be held at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday February 16, 2013 at 2 PM, with Rev. Billy Pinson and Pastor Wade Dotson officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, February 15, 2013 from 6 PM until 8 PM.

LEOLA “LEE” VAUGHN

November 23, 1916 – February 13, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Leola “Lee” Whitfield Vaughn, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at National Health Care of Lexington.

Born November, 23, 1916, the oldest of 14 children, she was predeceased in death by her husband L. C. Vaughn, her father and mother Haskel K. Whitfield and Mary Etta Mize Whitfield; brothers, Oscar and Joe Whitfield; and sisters, Ruzzelle Brock and Eunice Webb.  

 

For several years she owned and operated Merle Norman Studios in Lincolnton North Carolina and Timmonsville, South Carolina.  In her 80’s she was a member of Tri City Leisure Center, where she participated in the senior activities.  She was also an honorary member of the Red Hatters and enjoyed attending meetings and conventions.  Active into her 90’s until a fall caused an injury and left her in a wheelchair for the remainder of her life.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn Walker (Joe) of Lexingotn; three grandchildren, Dina Burkett (Terry), Natalie Schuckman (Doug) and Lance Myers (Jamie); six great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn Burkett, Austin, Cody and Tyler Schuckman, Riley and Hayden Myers, all of Lexington, SC.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, February 15, 2013, from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm.  The Graveside Service will follow at 3:30 pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Reverend Bill Rigby officiating.

RANDOLPH S. CALVO, SR.

October 31, 1918 – February 13, 2013

Randolph S. Calvo, Sr. of Anderson, SC, beloved husband of Frances Trammell Calvo, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2013.  Born in New York, Randy was the son of Sicilian immigrants, the late Luigi and Loreta Muscarella Calvo.  He was the last member of his immediate family.

Hailing from Chicago, IL, Randy enlisted in the United States Army during World War II.  Stationed at Camp Croft in Spartanburg, SC, he performed duties as a non-commissioned officer in full charge of the dental laboratory.  At a USO dance at the base, he met his future wife, Frances.  Love at first sight, Randy declared to a buddy, “That is the girl I’m going to marry,” and he did, and together they shared more than 70 years of married life.   

Moving his young family to Anderson in 1946, Randy established Calvo Dental Laboratory which he owned and operated for over 54 years.  He continued to work there on occasion into his 90’s.  He was a member of the National Board of Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology, Inc., and was a past president of the South Carolina Dental Laboratory Association. A member of Central Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, Randy was active in several church related capacities.  Serving as a deacon and elder, he also taught several Sunday School classes with attendants ranging in age from teenagers to seniors.  Randy was an avid golfer, fisherman and bowler, and was installed into the Anderson, USBC Bowling Association’s Hall of Fame.  Besides sports and his family, Randy loved and was beloved by many friends.  A member of the Jimmy Ezell prayer group, he treasured these weekly meetings. 

People and family were his true passion in life, and Randy never met a stranger.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Frances of the residence; a son, Randolph Calvo, Jr., and his wife, Dyann; daughters, Sylvia Calvo-Fowler and Catherine Knobel, and husband, Barry, all of Anderson; 6 grandchildren, Ann-Denise Cain and husband, Scott, Kathleen Nalley, Kelly Calvo and wife, Jenny, Kari Camp and husband, Drew, Blair Knobel, and Andrew Knobel; 8 great-grandchildren Jordan Cain, Alyssa Cain, Elijah Nalley, Lennon Nalley, Cooper Camp, Calvo Camp, Camden Camp and Bear Calvo.  In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by  his brothers Thomas Calvo, Anthony Calvo, and sister, Rosemary Calvo Karolewski. 

Entombment will be private.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 2:00 PM Central Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. David J. Bailey and Dr. Martin L. Harkey, Jr. officiating.  Honorary escort will include the members of the Jimmy Ezell prayer group and Dr. William Schriver, Tony Rozakos, Bubba Marchant, and Randy Bryant.  The family will receive friends following the service in the Central Presbyterian Church fellowship hall.

Donations can be made in honor of Randy to his beloved church, Central Presbyterian Church, 1404 N. Boulevard, Anderson, SC. 29621.

Charles Eugene Porter II

WILLIAMSTON - Charles Eugene Porter II, 35 of Williamston, died Monday, February 11, 2013 at his residence. 

Born October 3, 1977 in Galion, Ohio, he was the son of Charles Eugene and Connie Martin Porter. He was an employee of E Tech Communications and also worked security at T.J. Whispers on weekends.

Survivors include his parents of Ninilchik, Alaska; two sisters, Shondra Montgomery and husband, Dave of Williamston and Nicki Coulson of Columbus, Ohio; three nieces, Heather Raabe and husband, Cory of California, Ashley Montgomery of Williamston, and Kimberly Coulson of Norwalk, Ohio; two nephews, Cody Coulson of Norwalk, Ohio and Chris Montgomery and wife, Tarah of Pioneer, Ohio; great niece, Madison Montgomery-Miller of Williamston; great nephew, Elijah Coulson of Norwalk, Ohio; grandmother, Bertha Martin of Galion, Ohio and numerous aunts and uncles.

A celebration of life will be held from 1 until 5 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2013 at T.J. Whispers, 3434 Cinema Center, Anderson, SC.

J.T. Mitchum Jr.

John Thomas (J.T.) Mitchum, Jr. passed away January 19, 2013 at Richard Campbell Veterans Home in Anderson, SC surrounded by his loving family. 

Born October 3, 1922 in Gainesville, GA he was the son of the late John Thomas, Sr., and Charlene Mitchum.

J.T. was married to his beloved first wife, Dorothy Chemell of Birmingham, AL in 1946 until her death in 1992. He was married in 1998 to his second love, Dorothy Abernathy Allen of Anderson, SC until her death in 2012. In addition he was predeceased by one brother, Charles Dwight, Sr.; two sisters, Sue Mitchum and Louise Coker.

He leaves to cherish his memory, daughter, Candace (Ron Brooks) of Virginia Beach, VA and, son, Mike of Gulf Shores, AL. His loving grandsons Jason Bateman and Ryan Bateman (Kristin); Chris and Scott Mitchum; great-grandchildren, Trace and Riley Bateman; sister, Flossie Mitchum Attaway Shedd; her children Ronnie (Beverly) Attaway, Tim (Carol Ann) Attaway, John (Kathy) Attaway, Melissa (John) Hill); nephew, Dwight Mitchum Jr. (Patricia). His favorite “brothers-in-law” Louis (Cindy), David (Gina), and Tony Chemell; step-children Anita Ward, Joe Allen (Kathy), Scott Allen (Becky), Alison Randolph (Mark); eight grandchildren and many more nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home and, later, the hospice care provided by PH Healthcare for Veterans. They all provided loving care.

A Celebration of Life in memory of J.T. will be held on February 23, from 2 to 4 pm at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1735 Brown Bridge Rd, Gainesville, GA. A private committal service will be held on February 24 at Highland Memorial Gardens in Birmingham, AL.

BARRY ADDISON

March 23, 1944 – February 6, 2013 

ANDERSON, SC - Thomas Barry Addison, age 68, of 1900 Due West Highway, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at his residence.

Born in Anderson, SC he was the son of the late Thomas H. “Buck” Addison and the late Blondelle Beusse Addison.  Barry graduated from Wren High School and proudly served his country in the United States Navy.  He had retired from Best Amusements of Greenville, SC and also was the former owner of  Anderson Amusement and  Space Amusement Companies.  He was a mason and an avid classic car collector.  He attended Mt. Bethel Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Sheree Ashley Addison; two daughters, Lisa Addison of the home and Stacy Parker and her husband Mark of Jefferson, SC; and three grandchildren, Mason Bryant, Maggi Parker and Ashley Addison.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Addison Prater.

The family is at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. The Graveside Service will follow at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery at Noon with Dr. Ron Culbertson and Reverend Ricky Rice officiating.

Jimmy Stathakis

ANDERSON, SC - James J “Jimmy” Stathakis, age 82 , of Anderson, SC died on February 7, 2013.  

James was born in Gastonia, NC to the late Alexandria and John P. Stathakis but moved to Anderson as a young child.  Jimmy was married to the deceased Despo P. Stathakis and is survived by his sons William J. and  John J. who is married to Diann Pelias with three beloved grandsons, James J, Gerald J, William J. all of Anderson. He was predeceased in death by his brother, Pete J. Stathakis and survived by two sisters, Mary S. Raftakis of Anderson and Ellen S. Coclin of Orange , CT as well as many nieces and nephews who shared in his kindness and love.  Jimmy was a faithful member of the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Greenville SC and also supported the Paracletos Monastery in Antreville.

Jimmy graduated from Boys High School and was a proud member of the Class of 1948 with many enduring friendships.  He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Vienna, Austria.  He was a local Realtor, businessman and community volunteer until his death.  He was owner of the first Pete’s Drive Inn No.5 in Anderson, Stathakis Realty Company, and for most of his adult life James J. Stathakis Liquor Store.  His community activities included serving on Anderson City Council, Jaycees, as Past President, Mid Day Lions, Karyae Park, Anderson Board of Realtors, as Past President, the Elks Club, the Masons, and Shriners, past board member of the North Georgia College Foundation,  the St. George Church Parish Council and was a Commissioner and Chairman for many years on the South CarolinaHighway Commission.  In most of these organizations he held various leadership roles always giving of his time and energy when asked. Through the Board of Realtors he led the Dogwood Planting Campaign of Anderson. He was also active in the Greek Festival of Anderson as a founder and one of its most ardent supporters. 

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Grace Episcopal Church in Anderson with Reverend Father Tom Pistolis as Officiate .  Interment will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Friday, February 8, 2013 at The McDougald Funeral Home, Anderson, SC.  The Trisagion will be at 7:00 PM on Friday.

VIRGINIA ANNE SIMPSON

July 11, 1936 – February 6, 2013 

IVA, SC - Virginia Anne Simpson, age 76, of 408 West Green Street, Iva, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at her residence.

Born in Anderson, SC she was the daughter of the late Marvin Crittendon and the late Lucille Latham Crittendon McMahan.  Throughout her career she was the manager of several fabric stores in Anderson.  She was a member and former organist of Iva Wesleyan Church. She attended Truth Tabernacle Baptist Church

 

She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Evans Daniel Simpson; daughters, Sharon Simpson Hooper and her husband Tommy of Iva, SC and Lydia Simpson Parnell and her husband Benny of Anderson, SC; four grandchildren, Daniel Powell and his wife Aleesha, Heath Powell and his wife Kandis, Lydia Anne McClain and Benjamin Parnell; and eight great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Coby, Luke, Ethan, Andrew, Max, Jacob, and Caleb.  She was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Maxine Maxwell and Jerri Duckett.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends on Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 3:15 PM until 3:45 PM at Truth Tabernacle Baptist Church. The Funeral service will follow at 4:00 PM with Reverend Hudson White officiating. Interment will follow at Iva City Cemetery.
