George A. Garrett Jr.

Mr. George A. Garrett Jr. age 86, of 80 Garrett Rd., Donald S.C. died Monday Jan 11, 2010 at his home.  He was born in  Abbeville County and was the son of the late George W. Garrett Sr., and Bessie Mae Garrett. He was a member of the Mt. Lebanon A.M.E. Church., and is the husband of the late Nancy Lee Garrett.
Survivors include six daughters Linda Dianne Haynes, Cheryl Harris, Harriett Washington, Gwendolyn Dorsey, Patricia Garrett, and Linette Green. Two sons Edgar Garrett, and Tommy Garrett. One step-daughter Joyce Santos. Eighteen Grandchildren, 20 Great Grandchildren, One Great-Great-Grandchild. Three sisters Vivian Makin, Mildred Greaux, and Darlene Brooks. One brother Eddie Garrett. 
He was preceded in death by a son James Albert Garrett.
Funeral services will be held on Friday Jan 15, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at Mt. Lebanon A.M.E. Church Due West S.C. Burial will follow at the Oakbrook Memorial Gardens Greenwood S.C.  Holloway’s Funeral Home Inc. of Belton S.C. is serving the Garrett Family. The family is at the home.

Linnaeus Garnet Alexander 

ANDERSON – Linnaeus Garnet Alexander, 87, formerly of Creswell Avenue, widower of Dorothy Clement Alexander, died Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Magnolia Manor, Greenville.

Born March 31, 1922 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Arthur R. and Sudie Mae Scott Alexander. He was a U.S. Marine Corp Veteran of World War II and was a retired insurance salesman. Mr. Alexander was on the board of trustees and Advisor to the President of Youth Basketball of America. He was a member of Anderson First Baptist Church and the Baraca Class.

Survivors include two sons, Frank Alexander of Anderson and Chris Alexander of Greenville; two daughters, Becky Bell of Greenville and Jean Byce of Sandy Springs; nine grandchildren, Jenny Liberatore, Mitch Green, Brooks Byce, Josh Bell, Matt Green, Melissa Bell, Eric Bell, Ashlyn and Anna Alexander; great grandchild, Aiden Byce; and three brothers, Kenneth Alexander of Florida, David and Gaines Alexander, both of Anderson.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Green, and two sisters, Lena Ivester and Dorothy Alexander.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, conducted by Rev. C.W. Hicks. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum with military rites conducted by the Upstate Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home of Mitch and Sara Green, 137 Mediterranean Avenue, Anderson.

JACK DONNELLY

September 15, 1927 – January 13, 2010
ANDERSON, SC - John “Jack” Joseph Donnelly, Sr., age 82, husband of Alice Marie Barcalow Donnelly of 1421 Hilltop Drive, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at his residence.
 
Born in Brooklyn, NY on September 15, 1927, he was a son of the late Felix Harold Donnelly and Helen Bouton Donnelly.  He grew up in Brooklyn, NY where he was a graduate of Erasmus High School and later graduated from St. Bonaventure University.   He served in the United States Army as a Military Police during World War II. In 1959, he moved to Anderson and became the co-owner of the Kent Steel Inc. then later was the owner of Shamrock Metal Company.   He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Anderson Country Club and Cobb’s Glen Country Club.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Joseph’s Men’s Club.
 
Survivors include his wife, Alice Marie Barcalow Donnelly of the home; sons, John “Jackie” Donnelly, Jr., of Anderson and Brian L. Donnelly and his wife, Debbie of Powdersville; daughters, Nancy O’Rourke and her husband, John and Mary Alice Kelley and her husband Steve, all of Anderson, Claire Redding and fiancé’ Larry Trotter of Herndon, VA; brothers, Gerard Donnelly of Long Island, NY and James Donnelly of New York, NY.  Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Theresa, Mary Kate, James and Erin O’Rourke, Trey Woodard, Katelyn Donnelly, Brooke Arnold, Ashley Reese and Cole Kelley and four great-grandchildren.
 
He was predeceased by three brothers and six sisters.
 
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 15, 2010 at 10:30 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church conducted by Father Hayden Vaverek.  Interment will follow in M. J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors.
 
The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Thursday, January 14, 2010 from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm with a Prayer Vigil at 7:30 pm.
 
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621 or St. Joseph Catholic Church and School, 1200 Cornelia Road, Anderson, SC 29621.

SARAH H. KING

MAY 2, 1921 – JANUARY 13, 2010
 
ANDERSON, SC – Sarah Jane Howie King, age 88, of 716 Marshall Avenue, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at the AnMed Health Medical Center.
 
Born in Anderson, SC, on May 2, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Fred M. Howie and Alma Burress Howie.  She graduated from Anderson Girl’s High School, Winthrop College, and Clemson University.  Mrs. King was a retired Educator and Guidance Counselor. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday School Teacher, served as the Chairman of the Child Development Center Board, served on the St. John’s Official Board, and was instrumental in founding the St. John’s Clothes Closet.
 
Survivors include her husband of sixty-two years, Robert Bethune “Rob” King, Sr., of the home; son, Robert B. King, Jr. and wife, Welta C. King of Anderson, SC; granddaughter, Rachel Causey of Suwanee, GA.
 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Joe B. Howie.
 
Following a family committal service in New Silver Brook Cemetery, a Memorial Service will be held at 11 am on Friday, January 15, 2010, at St. John’s United Methodist Church.  The service will be conducted by the Reverend Dr. William R. Childs and the Reverend Dr. John M. Younginer.
 
The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm on Thursday, January 14, 2010.
 
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, 515 South McDuffie Street, Anderson, SC 29624.

JAMES J. SIMPSON

OCTOBER 11, 1922 – JANUARY 11, 2010
 
ANDERSON, SC – James Joseph “Jim” Simpson, age 87, of 113 Stanbury Court, passed away on Monday, January 11,2010, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.
 
Born on October 11, 1922, in Anderson, SC, he was a son of the late Jesse Ward Simpson and Sara Spearman Simpson.  He was a graduate of Anderson Boys’ High School and Clemson University.   While serving in World War II, he was stationed in France and Germany.  Following his service, he was awarded the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
 
Mr. Simpson was the retired President of Lawrence & Brownlee Insurance Company.  He was a former Rotarian, member of the Anderson Elk’s Club, and a member the Anderson Country Club.  Mr. Simpson was a member and former Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Anderson.
 
Survivors include his wife, Mary Sullivan Simpson of the home; and her son, Nim McConnell and wife, Linda Pruitt McConnell, and their daughter, Neely McConnell, all of Anderson; sister-in-law, Gladys Simpson of Texas; nephew, David N. Simpson, Jr., and wife, Denise of Raleigh; niece, Sara Margaret Simpson of Charleston; nephew, Thomas P. Hughes and wife, JoAnne of Edisto Island; niece, Cissy Hughes Prevost of Anderson; and great nieces & nephews: Ben, Maggie, Emily, David, Sara, Jennifer, Chris, Trask, & Meghan.
 
Mr. Simpson was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Derrell Fant Simpson; and his three brothers: Jesse Simpson, William Simpson, and David Simpson; and a stepson, Danny McConnell.
 
The Funeral Service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, January 14, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Reverend Dr. Dennis R. Tedder and the Reverend Caroline Berardi.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
 
A family committal service will be held in Old Silver Brook Cemetery.

T.J.S. WILLIAMS

November 9, 1917 – January 12, 2010
ANDERSON, SC  - Mr. T. J. Solomon Williams, age 92 of 302 D. Street, died Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the AnMed Health Medical Center.
 
Born in Habersham County, GA on November 9, 1917, Mr. Williams was a son of the late James Wesley Williams and Ida Sigars Williams.  He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and retired from Abney Mill with 62 years of service.  He was a member of Garner Memorial Baptist Church and was an avid gardener.
 
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 69 years, Avis L. Saxon Williams of the home; children, John Williams, Gael Williams, Esther Bowman and Ted Williams, all of Anderson; brothers, Tatum Williams of Anderson and Harold Williams of Georgia.  Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
 
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Ann Smith; granddaughter, Marie Ashworth; siblings, Alvin Williams, Addie Williams, Daisy McIntyre, Lavada Williams and Ernest Williams.
 
The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 2:30 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Isham Gilcrease.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
 
The family is at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from Noon until 2:00 pm.

HARRY FIELDS, SR.

January 10 1920 –January 11, 2010
 
WILLIAMSTON, SC - Harry Fields, Sr., age 90, husband of Ruth Whitten Fields, of Piercetown, died Monday, January 11, 2010 at his home after an extended illness.
 
Born in Brooklyn, NY on January 10, 1920, Mr. Fields was the son of the late William Fields and Anna Matilda Fields.  He was a World War II veteran, serving in two branches of the military, the Marine Corps and as Staff Sergeant, he served with the Troop Carrier Command of the US Army Air Corps.  He was a graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn NY and attended Brooklyn Polytechnic.  He was the retired President, Owner and CEO of Fieldco Paint Company. He was a member of Southern Paint Society, receiving a 25 year pin.  Mr. Fields was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Easley where he served as Sunday School teacher for several years.  He enjoyed camping and reading.  During his 68-year marriage, he and his wife visited every state in the nation except Hawaii.  Words that sum up his life: “family, hardworking, never met a stranger, always smiling, inventive and creative, ingenuity”.
 
Survivors include his wife , Ruth Whitten Fields of the home; his children: Carolyn Tambini and husband, George Tambini; son, Harry Fields, Jr., and wife Mary; Sharon Fields-McCormick and husband, Jack McCormick; four grandchildren, Jackie Barker, Monica Fowler, Kim Tambini and Craig Tambini and four great-grandchildren, Chelsea Fowler, Cassea Fowler, Ryan Barker and Megan Barker.
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Fields, Anna Fields and Wilhelmina Fields
 
The Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 2:00 pm at  Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church officiated by the Reverend Dave Shorter.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Tuesday.  Mr. Fields will be placed in the church at 12:30 on Wednesday.

CENTRAL, SC – Norma Jean Holden, age 60, of 4145 Old Greenville Highway, passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at her home.
 
Born in Anderson, SC, on January 31, 1949, she was a daughter of the late Rudolph Whitlock and Ethelene Black Whitlock.  She was a homemaker and a member of Bishop Branch Baptist Church.  Mrs. Holden was an avid traveler & gardener, and more than anything – enjoyed spending time with her family.
 
Survivors include her husband of forty-four years, Folger Julius Holden of the home; children: Jerry Holden and wife, Tracy of Liberty, Vickie O’Shields and husband, Eddie of Anderson, and Amy Holden of Liberty; six grandchildren: Adam, Jared, & Joshua Holden, and Caitlin, Blake, & Grant O’Shields; one great granddaughter, Julie Ann Holden; three sisters: Joann Todd of Six Mile, Lynn Greer of Williamston, and Cathy Lowe of Belton; two brothers: Larry Whitlock of Central and Donnie Whitlock of Anderson.
 
A Service to Celebrate the Life of Mrs. Holden will begin at 6pm on Thursday, January 14, 2010, in the Fellowship Hall of Bishop Branch Baptist Church.  Dr. Luther Price will begin a time of spoken reflections at 7pm.  The family will remain at the church until 8pm.

Anderson, SC, - Ellis Randolph Pearson, Jr., age 52, died January 2, 2010 at AnMed Health Medical Center.
 
Born in Desoto County, MS, on June 3, 1957, Mr. Pearson was a son of Ellis Randolph Pearson, Sr., of Nashville, TN and the late Wilma Jean McCann Pearson.  He was employed with 84 Lumber, in Greenville, SC.
 
He is survived by two sons; Steven Porter and Michael Pearson, daughter; Jessica Pearson, and a beloved friend, Charlotte Porter, two grandchildren.  
 
A Graveside service will be held Tuesday, at 11:00 am January 12, 2010 at the New Silver Brook Cemetery.

Juanita S. Knight

January 9, 1927- January 10, 2010
 
Anderson SC – Juanita Smith Knight, age 83, wife of the late Larry Lee Knight, passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2010, at the AnMed Health Medical Center.
 
Born January 9, 1927, in Flintville, TN, she was a daughter of the late Oliver David Smith and Myrtle Wicks Smith.  She graduated from Flintville High School in 1945, after which she moved to the Pendleton area, where she met and married her husband Larry, a Clemson University student. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage.  She was a homemaker, and a member of Orrville Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Ester Sunday School Class, for 60 years.  She was a volunteer with the Pink Ladies, at the AnMed Health Medical Center, she also volunteered with the Head Start preschool program, and was a member of the Anderson Ostomy Club.  She was an avid gardener, where she loved her vegetable garden and her many flowers, and was an avid Clemson football fan.
 
Survivors include her daughters; Marsha K. Moorhead and her husband Robert M., of Westminster, Myra K. Hart and her husband Randy, of Anderson, grandchildren, Leah Drake, of Anderson, Libby Galloway and her husband Paul, of Charleston, Ben Moorhead and his wife Ashley, of Seneca, and Abby Crooks and her husband Jonas, of Westminster, great-grandchildren; Bradley, Kyler and Meggie Jane Moorhead, Jeb and Caleb Crooks, and Noah and Samuel Galloway.  And a special friend, her caregiver of three years, Daisy Walker of Anderson.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews in the Flintville TN area.
 
She was preceded in death; by her parents; five brothers and two sisters.
 
The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Wendell Bannister.  Interment will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery.

CHICAMAUGA, GA – Glenn Douglas Roberts, age 67, of 146 Dana Lane, passed away on Friday, January 8, 2010, at Memorial Health Care in Chattanooga, TN.
 
Born on October 25, 1942, in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Sam Daniel Roberts and Mary Brown Roberts.  He graduated from Townville High School and was a retired Insurance Agent.  Mr. Roberts was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church in Anderson and in recent years enjoyed collecting guitars.
 
Survivors include his wife of nearly forty-five years, Jackie Roach Roberts of the home; his brother, Bill Roberts of Starr, SC; and his mother-in-law, Hortense Roach of Anderson, SC.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Dan Roberts & Jack Roberts.
 
The Funeral Service will be held at 12:30 pm on Monday, January 11, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Charles Allen.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Anderson, SC – Peggy Herring Vassar, age 73, wife of Donald Ellis Vassar, passed away on Friday, January 8, 2010, at her home.
 
Born January 23, 1936, in Anderson, SC, she was a daughter of the late James Manning Herring and Collie Bobo Herring. She was a 1958 graduate of Girls High School and had attended Anderson College. She was retired from the Color Craft Corporation in Charlotte, NC.  and was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Temple.
 
Survivors include her husband of the home; daughter; Laura Gaye Griffin; sons, Jeffery Vassar and his wife Lisa, Chris Vassar and his wife Penny 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, all of Anderson, SC brother, Charles Fay Herring, of Hartwell GA; and a sister Ruby Herring Sharpe and her husband Jessie L. Sharpe; three lifetime friends, Betty Durst, Catherine “Cooky” Stevenson, and Patsy Cole.
 
She was preceded in death; by her parents; a daughter, Terry Vassar Williamson; and one brother, James Walker Herring.
 
The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 on Monday, January 11, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Reverend Sam Duncan.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
