KENNETH L. REED

June 12, 1971 – May 29, 2011

BELTON, SC - Kenneth Lane Reed, age 39, husband of Melinda Bragg Reed of 455 North Major Road, died Sunday, May 29, 2011.

Born in Anderson, SC on June 12, 1971, Kenneth was the son of George Eugene Reed and Margaret Jeanette Lindsay Reed.  He was a 1989 graduate of McDuffie High School and was employed at Robert Bosh Corporation for the last 15 years.  He was an avid motorcyclist and was a member of DILLIGAF Motorcycle Club.  He was loving father and was of the Baptist Faith.  

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by his step-mother, Vickie Reed of Belton; sons, Josh Reed of the home and Chase Reed of Lowndesville, SC; stepsons; Gabriel Smith of the home, Ricky and Drake Smith both of Calhoun Falls, SC; stepbrothers, Chad and Michael Vickery, both of Belton; grandmother, Sue B. Reed of Belton

He was predeceased by his grandparents, George E. Reed and Roy and Evelyn Lindsay.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverends Sam Duncan and Jim Wilson.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday June 1, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

ANNE EWING

MAY 13, 1931 – MAY 29, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Anne Elizabeth Robinson Ewing, age 80, of 139 Bradley Park, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born May 13, 1931, in Orlando, FL, she was a daughter of the late Dell Robinson and Kathleen Robinson. She was a graduate of Orangeburg High School and received her certification as a Registered Medical Technician from Orangeburg Regional Hospital.   Mrs. Ewing was an avid bridge player as well as former volunteer with Hospice of the Upstate. She was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she had served in numerous capacities, particularly within her Circle Group. She and her husband have both served as delegates to the South Carolina Methodist Conference.  In earlier years, she had served within Girls Scouts and Cub Scouts.

Survivors are her husband, Dr. Bill R. Ewing, of the home; a son, Billy Ewing and wife, Nancy, of Anderson, SC; a daughter, Deborah Bonin and husband, Tom, of Anderson, SC; grandchildren: Joey Bonin, Matthew Bonin, Jordan Bonin, Emily Grace Ewing, Lori Sloan and husband, Michael, Tyler Williams and wife, Michaela; sister, Mary Crawford of Charlotte, NC; and brother, David Robinson of McBee, SC. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Philip Ewing; and a brother, John Robinson.

A Graveside Service will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park conducted by the Reverend Paul Frey.  The family will receive friends immediately following the Graveside Service.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to Epworth Children’s Home, 2900 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205, or to the Haven of Rest Ministries, P.O. Box 466, Anderson, SC 29622.

MARY VIRGINIA OMUNDSON

SEPTEMBER 27, 1919 – MAY 29, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Mary Virginia Omundson, age 91, of 2618 Duncan Street, died Sunday, May 29, 2011, at AnMed Health Medical Center.  

Born in Gordon, GA, she was the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth Martin and William Andrew Barrentine. She spent most of her early years in Iva, SC, and was raised by her aunt, Mrs. Sanford Presley Brown. She graduated from Macon Hospital’s School of Nursing at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. She served as Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Nursing Corps during World War II.  Her nursing career spanned many years and she was employed with Anderson Memorial Hospital, Latham Nursing Home, Ellenburg Nursing Home, as well as years of private duty practice. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Anderson, but also regularly attended the Iva Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

Survivors are a husband of 65 years, Gus Omundson; and one son, Andy Omundson and his wife, Vicki, of Greenwood, SC.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Station One of NHC of Anderson for all of the attention, love, and support extended to Mrs. Omundson and her husband while she was a resident at NHC for over seven and one-half years.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, conducted by Dr. Randy Hall.  The family will receive friends immediately following the Graveside Service.

BEATRICE R. WEBB

OCTOBER 2, 1922 – MAY 28, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Beatrice Rogers Webb, age 88, of 505 Parkwood Drive, went to meet her heavenly father on Saturday, May 28, 2011, after a long illness due to a stroke.

Born October 22, 1922, in Anderson, SC, she was a daughter of the late Welborn Rogers and Eunice Caldwell Rogers. She retired from Pruitt’s Army Store and was a longtime member of Welcome Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children: Phillip Webb and wife, Jeanette, of Anderson, SC, Sarah Ruth King and husband, Larry, of Anderson, SC, and Flora Jane White and husband, Larry, of Central, SC; grandchildren: Greg White and wife, Kathy, Rick Owen and wife, Dorothy, Randy Owen, and Cindy O. Perry; step grandchildren: Marty King and wife, Anna, and Michael King; eight great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters: Ester Lee Finley of Anderson, SC, and Edith Burgess and husband, Harrison, of Williamston, SC; brothers: W.C. Rogers and wife, Mary, of Anderson, SC, and Roy Rogers and wife, Norma Jean, of Belton, SC; and her faithful caretakers – a special sister, Ruth Dooley of Anderson, SC, and a great granddaughter, Andrea White of Central, SC.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Sloan C. Webb; brothers: Lyman, Alvin, and Ralph David “Bud” Rogers; and a sister, Inez Rogers.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3:30 pm on Monday, May 30, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Zane Talley and the Reverend DeLennon Stowe.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family is at the home and will receive friends at the funeral home from 2pm until 3pm on Monday.

ERNESTINE B. WESTBROOK

January 19, 1924 – May 16, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Ernestine Burden Westbrook, age 87, wife of the late Robert”R.L.”  Westbrook, of Anderson, died Monday, May 16, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, SC on January 19, 1924, Mrs. Westbrook was a daughter of the late Hester Moses Burden and Eliza Victoria Dove Burden.  She was a graduate of Anderson Girls’ High School and Lander University.  She retired from the South Carolina Department of Social Services as a case worker.  She was instrumental as one of the organizers of the Anderson Head Start Program where she also served as a teacher. She was the founding organizer of the Anderson Food Cupboard. Mrs. Westbrook was very musically inclined having played piano for several churches and singing with her sisters.  She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Jan W. Healy; son, Philip Westbrook; two grandchildren, Kelly Mullikin and her husband, Jason and John Westbrook; two great-grandchildren, Jordan Mullikin and Kaitlyn Mullikin and sister, Johnnie Apinis and her husband John, all of Anderson, SC.

She was predeceased by a sister, Winona Newton and her husband, Randy Newton and son-in-law, Dr. Don J. Healy.    

A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 3:00 pm at New Silver Brook Cemetery officiated by Dr. David J. Bailey.  

The family will be at the home of her daughter, 105 Slaton Court, Anderson, SC 29621 and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

SAMMY KAY

JUNE 28, 1950 – MAY 16, 2011

BELTON, SC – Sammy Lee Kay, age 60, of 205 Pineland Meadows Road, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2011, at his home.

Born June 28, 1950, in Anderson, SC, he was a son of the late Lee Kay and Winnie Sue Norton Kay. He retired from Cushman Mill in Williamston and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Williamston.

Survivors include his wife, Sherrill Ann Adams Kay; daughters, Pamala Ann Kay Taylor (William C. Taylor, Jr.) of Lowndesville, SC, and Peggy Lynn Kay (Edward Vincen Glenn) of Belton, SC; grandchildren: Jessica Nicole Taylor (Brandon Johnson), Joseph Alan Taylor (Brandi Ashley), Elizabeth Michell Taylor, and Robert Lee Libby Kay; great grandchildren: Allison Nicole Johnson and Kaleigh Grace Taylor.

The Funeral Service will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Reverend Jimmy Smith. Burial will follow in White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery.

Margaret Ruby Mae Butler King

ANDERSON - Margaret Ruby Mae Butler King, 81, loving mother and wife of the late Joe H. King, went to be with her heavenly father on Sunday morning, May 15, 2011.

Born August 17, 1929 in Easley, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Bessie Mae Horton Butler. Margaret retired from Owens-Corning Fiberglas after years of service and later retired from AnMed Health's business office. She was a member of Belton Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Susan King Clardy and her husband, J. D. of Simpsonville; son, Don Milton King of Anderson; 7 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; brother, Johnny Butler of Roswell, GA and sister, Bonnie Turner of Riverdale, GA. She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Whiten and brother, Gary Butler.

Funeral service will be held at 3pm Wednesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel with Rev. Steve Oltz officiating. Burial will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 8pm at the Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 N. The family is at the home of her brother-in-law, Amiel and Peggy King, 814 Ivy Circle, Anderson.

Mrs. Pat Davis

April 6, 1945 – May 4, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC - Mrs. Patricia Ann “Patsy” Alderson Davis, age 66, wife of Guy Davis of 104 Lullwater Parkway, Anderson, SC, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Washington, DC on April 6, 1945, Mrs. Davis was the adopted daughter of the late Delmar M. Alderson and Laura Branyon Alderson and step-mother, Eunice Hawkins Alderson “Ma Lance”.  She was retired from K-Mart Corporation after 20 years of service and after retirement, worked for Sam’s Club.  She lived in Bethesda Baptist Home for Children in Bethesda, MD for two years as a child and moved to Anderson, SC at the age of twelve.  She attended McCants Middle School and Girls’ High School and was a member of Taylor Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church in Anderson.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years,  Guy Davis of the home; her children, Carrie Davis Newton of the home; Darryl Davis and his wife, Valerie, and Tara Davis Carter and her husband, Del; grandsons, Zachary Davis and Ryan Newton of the home; sister, Frosty Alderson of Anderson, SC; her mother-in-law, Helen Davis all of Anderson, SC; step-brothers, Ralph Callaham of Honea Path, SC; half-brothers, Terry Griffith of Ware Shoals, SC and Ron Griffith of Bethlehem, GA.  She is also survived by four step-grandchildren, Preston, Brad, Gwlinda and Krystal and eleven step-great-great grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a step-brothers, Clyde Callaham, George and David Lance and sister, Ruth Burdette. 

The Funeral Service will be held at Taylor Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 11:00 AM officiated by the Reverends Brent Lollis and Lawrence Johnson.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, May 6, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

JIMMY STRICKLAND

May 2, 1944 – May 4, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC - Jimmy V. Strickland, age 67, husband of Patricia Baughman Strickland of 613 Fairmont Road, died Wednesday, May 04, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, SC on May 2, 1944, Mr. Strickland was a son of the late Harold Strickland and Altha Vaughn Strickland.  He retired from AnMed Health Medical Center as a respiratory therapist after 44 years of service.  He was a member of North Anderson Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of the home; daughter, Cynthia Adams and her husband, Brian; son Mark Strickland; four grandchildren, Corey Adams, Zoe Adams, Zane Adams and Aspen Strickland all of Anderson.

A Private Memorial Service will be held on Friday, officiated by the Reverend Bill Rigsby.  

The family will be at the home of his daughter, 605 Sherry Drive, Anderson, SC.

JAMES E. PORTERFIELD

OCTOBER 1, 1923 – APRIL 29, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC – James Edward Porterfield, age 87, of 3408 Wilmont Street, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born October 1, 1923, in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Hollis Porterfield and Evie Graham King.  Mr. Porterfield served in the United States Army during World War II.  He retired from the textiles industry having been a Supervisor at Gluck Mill for many years.  He was also the owner of Porterfield’s Garage.  A faithful member of Homeland Park Baptist Church, Mr. Porterfield had formerly served as Chairman of the Deacons as well as Superintendent of Sunday Schools.  He was a fifty year Mason. 

Survivors include his beloved wife of nearly sixty-five years, Mary Christine Deal Porterfield; brother, Joe King and wife, Ruth of Westminster, SC; sisters: Sudie Moore of Seneca, SC, Blanche Hohnerlein of Anderson, SC, Nancy Crowe and husband, Robert of Anderson, SC, and Montez Wood and husband, Donnie of Fair Play, SC; sister-in-law, Ilean King Mason of Walhalla, SC; and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters: Helen Clardy and Dora “Tommie” King; brothers: Jack Jellette King, Sr., Boyce Blant King, and DeWitt Porterfield; stepfather, Wayne King; stepbrothers: Carl King, Bub King, and S.P. King; sister-in-law, Ann Porterfield; and brothers-in-law, Harold Moore, James King, and Dalton Clardy.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3pm on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at Homeland Park Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Larry Cox, the Reverend Wayne Dickard, and the Reverend U.C. Neill.  The Entombment Service will be conducted by the Reverend Sam Duncan and Military Honors provided by the US Army, Ft. Gordon, will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. 

The family is at the home of Robert & Nancy Crowe, 104 East Roosevelt Drive, Anderson, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 4pm until 6pm on Saturday, April 30, 2011. Mr. Porterfield will be placed into the Church at 2pm on Sunday.

MARY M. MCALISTER

PENDLETON-Mary Mullikin McAlister, 82,of the Six & Twenty Community, wife of James Arnold McAlister, died Sunday, April 24, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born June 10, 1928 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Ethel Hinton Mullikin. She was a retired secretary for LaFrance Industries and a member of the Eastern Star. Mrs. McAlister was very active in her church, Sierra Baptist Church, where she attended Sunday School and was a member of the choir. She was an avid gardener.
Survivors include her husband, J. Arnold McAlister of Anderson, son, Steve McAlister and his wife, Vickie; grandchildren, Alan McAlister and his wife, Angel; Anna M. Harper and her husband, Eric all of Pendleton and Beth M. Davis and her husband, John of Anderson; great grandchildren, Will and Emilee McAlister, Morgan Harper and Harbin Davis. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by a son, James Arnold McAlister, Jr.
 
Funeral services will be held at 5PM  Friday at Sierra Baptist Church with Revs. Rex Simmons and Bill Ellison officiating. Burial will follow at Six and Twenty Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 8 PM at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 N. 

The family is at the home of Steve and Vickie McAlister, 1925 Five Forks Road, Pendleton.

Thomas R. Pelfrey

ANDERSON- Thomas Rudolph Pelfrey, 68, of Allison Circle, died Sunday April 24, 2011.

Born July 31, 1942 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Edgar and Emma Simpson Pelfrey. He was retired from the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War and Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion and was an electrical engineer. Mr. Pelfrey was greatly loved by his nieces.

Survivors include his sons: Edgar M. "Mike" Pelfrey of Cave Creek, AZ and Mitchell T. Pelfrey of Anderson and grandsons: Zachary M. Pelfrey and Nathan Key. He was preceded in death by his brother, Terry Pelfrey and sister, Joyce Hilley.

Graveside services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veteran's Cemetery conducted by Rev. Bill Rigsby with full military honors. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.
