BEVERLY DAVIS

ANDERSON - Beverly Bennett Davis, 79, of Anderson, husband of Claudine Makison Davis, passed away Monday, April 25, 2011.

Born October 30, 1931 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Jesse Hampton and Willie Mae Evans Davis. He was retired owner of Davis Produce, which he operated over 20 years with his wife, Claudine.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Claudine Makison Davis; two daughters, Deborah Prevost (Alan) and Kay Acker (Don); two granddaughters, Kyra Roberts (Keith) and Krystal Harmon; three grandsons, Erik Acker (April), Jared Acker (Marisa) all of Anderson and Jon Acker (Crystal) of Westminster, CO; Twelve great grandchildren, Audrey, Grace, Jesse, Kaitlyn, Avery, Addie, Scottie, Bella, Bryson, Colby, Josiah and Nathanael; and a brother, Cecil Davis (Vivian) of Anderson.

He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Vada and Jack Metz.

Funeral service will be held at 2pm Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel with Dr. Wendell Bannister officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2pm prior to the service at the Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 N. The family is at the residence.

OSMUND V. PLACE

April 22, 1930 – April 23, 2011

Anderson, SC – Osmund Vincent “Ozzie” Place, age 81, of Anderson, SC, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Pittsburg, PA to the late John A. Place and Mary Elizabeth Campbell Place, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard and graduated from Grove City College and Case Western Reserve University.

Mr. Place was employed with Am-Pak in Hudson, Ohio and started the Card-Pak Corporation in Cleveland, Ohio.  He also worked at Nordson in Atlanta, GA and then moving with the company to Anderson, SC, until his retirement.  He was instrumental in starting a Packaging Degree Program at Clemson University. He was an avid golfer.

Survivors include his son, Bob Place of Stone Mountain, GA; three daughters, Barbara P. Wester of Bremen, GA, Kimberly M. Black of Anderson, SC and Pamela M. Bevill of Appling, GA; five grandchildren, Jeff, Sarah, and Sam Wester and Will and John Black; one brother, Tom Place of Ponte Vedra, FL; and one sister, Mary Thomas of Youngstown, OH.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Place was predeceased by his wife, Julia Wright Place, and three brothers, John, Eric and Herk Place.

A Private Family Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

MARSHALL M. FREEMAN

July 25, 1931 – April 19, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Marshall M. Freeman, age 79, of Anderson, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson County, SC on July 25, 1931, Mr. Freeman was the son of the late J. D. Freeman and Sybil Cole Freeman.  He was a graduate of Boys High School and served in the United States Air Force.   He began his cooking career at the Waffle House Restaurant then retired from Stewart’s Restaurant.  He was a member of West Whitner Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Jennings Freeman; sons, Andy Freeman and Richard Freeman and his wife, Lisa Freeman; daughter, Marsha Singleton and her husband, Wayne Singleton; daughter-in-law, Teresa Freeman; sister, Joann Darby; five grandchildren, Kayla and Daniel Freeman; Erica and David Singleton and Jody Davis and his wife, Jewel Davis; three great-grandchildren, Josh, Jared and Aubrey.  

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Marshall Dwain Freeman.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Jonathon McGary.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

EDNA J. NEESE

MAY 1, 1921 – APRIL 18, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Edna Kate Jones Neese, age 89, passed away at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born May 1, 1921, in Starr, SC, she was a daughter of the late William Thomas Jones and Lula McGill Jones.  Mrs. Neese retired from the textiles industry having been employed at both Gluck & Orr Mill.  She was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters: Patsy Love of Anderson, SC, Cheryl Stewart of Starr, SC, and Debbie Neese of New Market, TN; thirteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Mike Neese.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverends David Pickens and Sam Duncan. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the home, 207 Wellingston Street, and received friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6pm until 8pm on Tuesday.

GEORGE CHESTER ALMOND

FEBRUARY 20, 1925 – APRIL 16, 2011

ELBERTON, GA – George Chester Almond, age 86, of 1651 Athens Highway, husband of Joyce Beth Bonds Almond, died Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born February 20, 1925, in Elbert County, GA, he was the son of the late Thomas Early Almond and Jasper Louise Fortson Almond. Mr. Almond served in World War II in the European Theatre, was wounded and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was retired from the granite industry and served several terms on the board of directors of Elberton Granite Association. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Elberton, having served as a deacon and elder.

Survivors are his wife, Joyce Beth Bonds Almond of the home; two daughters: Kay Almond Wilson and husband, Thomas Evans Wilson III, of Beaufort, SC, and Rita Almond Mulherin and husband, Louis Mulherin III of Augusta, GA; three granddaughters: Brooks Wilson Salley and husband, Rion Salley of Beaufort, SC, Leigh Wilson Ward and husband, Jason Ward of Beaufort, SC, and Courtney Mulherin of Augusta, GA; two great-granddaughters: Kathryn Bryant Salley of Beaufort, SC, and Hannah Leigh Ward of Beaufort, SC; two great-grandsons: Jackson Lesesne Ward of Beaufort, SC, and Wilson Decatur Salley of Beaufort, SC; and two nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Early Almond and Jasper Louise Fortson Almond; two brothers: Mack Almond and Hood Almond; and sister, Edna Almond Teasley.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Lowndesville, SC, conducted by the Reverend Mike Woods.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 pm until 9:00 pm on Monday at the First Presbyterian Church of Elberton as well immediately following the Graveside Service in the Fellowship Hall of Providence Presbyterian Church.

ANN B. WINGATE

FEBRUARY 29, 1940 – APRIL 16, 2011

TAYLORS, SC – Phyllis Ann Burriss Wingate, age 71, passed away at her home on Saturday, April 16, 2011.

Born February 29, 1940, in Anderson, SC, she was the only child of the late Harold Frank Burriss and Bobbye Hillhouse Burriss.  Mrs. Wingate was a 1958 graduate of Anderson Girl’s High School as well as a 1961 graduate of Limestone College.  She was a homemaker and had formerly been employed by the State of South Carolina as a Social Worker.  A lifelong Lutheran, she was a former member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Anderson. As long as her health permitted, Ann enjoyed volunteering for the Cancer Society and enjoying her many childhood friends in the Class of ‘58 Luncheon Club. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, James Austin Wingate Jr., of the home; sons: James Austin Wingate III and wife, Carla Christian Wingate of Simpsonville, SC, and Paul Christopher Wingate of Taylors, SC; and a cherished granddaughter, Emily Ann Wingate of Simpsonville, SC.

The Funeral Service conducted by the Reverend Ray Thompson will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Mountain Creek Baptist Church, 3407 South Highway 29, Anderson, SC.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Mountain Creek Baptist Church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

LESTER A. McGINNIS

SEPTEMBER 6, 1928 – APRIL 16, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Lester Asbury McGinnis, age 82, of 118 B Candi Drive, passed away on Saturday at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, SC, he was the only child of Lester Matthew Coleman McGinnis and Jane Alexander McGinnis.  Mr. McGinnis retired from the Milliken Finishing Plant and was a charter member of Asbury Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Christine Fisher McGinnis, of the home; and twelve children: Patsy Strickland, Charles Dooley, Mickey McGinnis, Marlene Erwin, Mike Dooley, Kathy Burton, Ronnie McGinnis, Janice Stevenson, William Dooley, Charlene Craft, Tina Burdette, and Kim Burdette; twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Monday, April 18, 2011, at Asbury Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Delennon Stowe and the Reverend Lloyd Robison.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

NOVEMBER 14, 1923 – APRIL 14, 2011
ANDERSON, SC – A Memorial Service for Alice Mae Belles Yates, 87, will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at 1:30 pm. Burial with Military Honors provided by the U.S. Army, Ft. Gordon, will follow in the M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:30 – 1:30 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. The Reverend Ron Lewis will conduct the services.
Mrs. Yates passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011, in Anderson Place Health Center. Born on November 14, 1923 in Clinton, Ia., she was a daughter of the late Robert Belles and Ruth Castle Belles. She earned her RN from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Davenport, Ia. in 1944. She served her country during World War II as a 1st Lt. Army Nurse on the Island of Guam, then returned to civilian life and attained the position of Head Nurse at Michael Reese Medical Center in Chicago. After marriage she continued in nursing at various hospitals in Springfield, Ill., Baltimore, Md. and Atlanta. She has been involved with the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Aside from her passion for travel the true joys of her life were her family, friends and crafting.  
Surviving is her sister, Verna Belles Winterbottom of Greenville; son, Dr. Steven Yates of Piedmont; daughter, Leigh Ann Yates-Brown and son-in-law Stephen Brown; grandchildren, Justin and Dylan Henry; great granddaughter, Dannielyn Henry all of Woodstock, Ga.; niece, Kathy Winterbottom Laurens and her husband Dr. Richard Laurens of Greer and their children; nephews Brent Winterbottom of Columbia and Robert Winterbottom of Port St. Lucie, Fla. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, the late William Clyde Yates Jr. of Anderson, and by her brother, the late Gene Belles of Bettendorf, Ia.

Born February 8, 1953, in San Bernardino, CA, she was a daughter of the late Vernon McLeskey and Christine Smalley McLeskey.  She was a member of North Anderson Baptist Church and attended Bible Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Terri Manley Thackston of Anderson, SC; her son, Donny Ray Manley, Jr. and wife, Dana of Anderson, SC; four grandchildren: Brandon Manley & Blake Humphries, and Kaitlin Manley & Taylor Manley; and five brothers: Terry McLeskey of Lakeland, FL, Richard McLeskey of Palmdale, CA, Johnny McLeskey, Eddie McLeskey, and Mike McLeskey, all of Anderson, SC.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3pm on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Bill Rigsby and the Reverend Ken Whitt.

IVA, SC - Carrie Bell Hart Taylor, age 95, wife of the late S. A. Taylor, died Friday, April 15, 2011 at the Cobb Health Care Hospital in Comer, GA.  

Born in Anderson County, SC on May 23, 1915, Mrs. Taylor was a daughter of the late Lonnie Hart and Ella Elgin Hart.  She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal Faith.

Survivors include her son, Robert Neil Taylor; daughters, Fannie Mae Haynie, Bonnie Sue Seawright, Betty Lois Rousey and Laura Bell Penland; brothers, Sam and Willis Hart; sisters, Bertha Mae Burdette, Laura Ruth Elgin and Alice Wheeler; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Lee and Louis Hart and a granddaughter, Debra Starrett.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 2:00  pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Phillip Hart.  Interment will follow in Iva City Cemetery.

APRIL 16, 1969 - APRIL 14, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Robert Britt Brown, age 41, of 210 Lake Forest Circle passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011.

Born April 16, 1969, in Anderson, SC, he was the son of Bobby Marion Brown and the late Shirley Ann Herring Page.  He was a graduate of T.L. Hanna High School and was the owner of Pro-Tech Termite & Pest Solutions.  Britt loved his family very much and enjoyed all aspects of life to the fullest.  He was an avid motorcyclist.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Valerie Bailey Brown and their son, Wesley Garrett Brown, both of the home; his father, Bobby Marion Brown of Anderson, SC; his half-brother, Eric Kuykendall of Williamston, SC; and Valerie’s parents: Wes & Elaine Bailey; her sister, Jocelyn Smith and her son, Harrison Smith, all of Anderson, SC.

A Service to Celebrate and Remember the Life of Britt Brown will be held at 4pm on Sunday, April 17, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home.   The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

TERESA C. MC CLELLAN 

September 21, 1963 – April 5, 2011

BELTON, SC - Teresa Chapman McClellan, age 47, wife of Scott David McClellan of 107 Havenshire Place, died Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, SC on September 21, 1963, Teresa was the daughter of Louise Allen Chapman of Anderson and the late George Earl Chapman.  She was a 1981 graduate of Belton- Honea Path High School and worked as an assistant manager for 81South Shell Convenience Store.   She was the senior vice president of V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post #5996; treasurer of the V.F. W. Riders;  member of the Family of III  and ABATE, Anderson Chapter.  She was also a member of Neals Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by her siblings; Linda Chapman LeCroy of Honea Path, Harold Chapman and his wife, Cindy of Greenville, Cheri Chapman of Honea Path and Lane Chapman and his wife, Diane of Anderson; mother-in-law, Patsy Sweatt of Anderson; brothers-in-law and their wives, Ken and Mellie McClellan of Harrisburg, NC and Russell and Allison McClellan of Anderson.

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 3:00 pm at Neals Creek Baptist Church officiated by the Reverends Alex Henderson and Terry Allen.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
