ELBERTON, GA – George Chester Almond, age 86, of 1651 Athens Highway, husband of Joyce Beth Bonds Almond, died Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born February 20, 1925, in Elbert County, GA, he was the son of the late Thomas Early Almond and Jasper Louise Fortson Almond. Mr. Almond served in World War II in the European Theatre, was wounded and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was retired from the granite industry and served several terms on the board of directors of Elberton Granite Association. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Elberton, having served as a deacon and elder.

Survivors are his wife, Joyce Beth Bonds Almond of the home; two daughters: Kay Almond Wilson and husband, Thomas Evans Wilson III, of Beaufort, SC, and Rita Almond Mulherin and husband, Louis Mulherin III of Augusta, GA; three granddaughters: Brooks Wilson Salley and husband, Rion Salley of Beaufort, SC, Leigh Wilson Ward and husband, Jason Ward of Beaufort, SC, and Courtney Mulherin of Augusta, GA; two great-granddaughters: Kathryn Bryant Salley of Beaufort, SC, and Hannah Leigh Ward of Beaufort, SC; two great-grandsons: Jackson Lesesne Ward of Beaufort, SC, and Wilson Decatur Salley of Beaufort, SC; and two nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Early Almond and Jasper Louise Fortson Almond; two brothers: Mack Almond and Hood Almond; and sister, Edna Almond Teasley.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Lowndesville, SC, conducted by the Reverend Mike Woods.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 pm until 9:00 pm on Monday at the First Presbyterian Church of Elberton as well immediately following the Graveside Service in the Fellowship Hall of Providence Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Elberton, 154 South McIntosh Street, Elberton, GA 30635, or to the Cemetery Fund of Providence Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 226, Lowndesville, SC 29659.
