HAZEL R. SMITH

NOVEMBER 1, 1928 – JUNE 9, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC – Loving mother and wife, Hazel Richardson Smith, died after an extended illness at her daughter’s residence in Florida.

Born November 1, 1928, in Hart County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Q.A. and Amy Wilson Richardson and the wife of the late Reverend Clarence E. “Pete” Smith.  Mrs. Smith retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company.

Survivors include two daughters: Clarice Smith Bledsoe of Orange Park, FL, and Valerie Smith Towles and husband, David, of North Augusta, SC; four grandchildren: Stephen & Amanda Bledsoe, and Nathan & Elizabeth Towles; two great grandchildren: Taylor Royal and Trinity Bledsoe; and close friends: Wayne & Nancy Bledsoe. 

A Graveside Service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at New Silver Brook Cemetery.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

ROBERT BROWNING

NOVEMBER 19, 1963 – JUNE 11, 2011 

LIBERTY, SC – Robert Clayton Browning, age 47, of 333 Griffith Drive, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born November 19, 1963, in Anderson, SC, he was the son of the late Clayton & Virginia Hawkins Browning. He was a 1982 graduate of Wren High School and retired from the grocery industry after 30 years of service. Mr. Browning was a member of Guthrie Grove Church of God and attended Joy Fellowship Church in Piedmont.

Survivors include his sister, Beth Shirley of Liberty, SC; and two beloved nieces: Laura Barnett and Lisa Shirley.

A Graveside Service will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at Guthrie Grove Church of God Church Cemetery.

The family is at the home of Beth Shirley, 337 Griffith Drive, Liberty, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6pm until 8pm on Monday.

JIMMY GRIFFIN

JULY 11, 1950 – JUNE 10, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Jimmy Wayne Griffin, age 60, passed away Friday, June 10, 2011, at his home.

Born July 11, 1950, in Williamston, he was a son of the late Kirby Griffin and Sybil Gailey Griffin Burdette.  He graduated from Palmetto High School and retired from the textiles industry. 

Survivors include his siblings: Doyle Griffin, Patsy Davis, and Ronnie Griffin, all of Anderson, SC, Drusilla Alewine of Lavonia, GA, and Arlene Ricketts of Iva.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepfather, Willie Burdette; and a brother, Dennis Larry Griffin.

A Graveside Service will be held at 10:30am on Monday, June 13, 2011, at New Silver Brook Cemetery.  

The family is at the home of Patsy Davis, 1115 Hickory Lane, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 pm until 8 pm on Sunday.

CHARLES VICKERY

September 17, 1966 – June 5, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC - Charles William “Pete” Vickery, Jr., age 44, of 604 North Pointe Creek, died June 5, 2011.

Born in Anderson, SC, he was the son of the late Charles William Vickery, Sr., and Joyce Cheek Richards.  He was a graduate of McDuffie High School and was a self-employed D.J. for several years.  He was of the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by aunts: Jeanette Manley, Judy Smith, Janis Grant, Wanda Carson and Gail Shead; uncles:  Robert and Eddie Vickery; Connie Ray and Lloyd Cheek.  

He was predeceased by an uncle, Sam Cheek.

A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 11:00 am at New Silver Brook Cemetery officiated by the Reverend Robbie Garrett with visitation following.

DICK PERRY

March 24, 1921 – June 6, 2011

PIEDMONT, SC - Joseph C. “Dick” Perry, age 90, husband of Syble Ham Perry, formerly of Piedmont, died Monday, June 6, 2011 at Eden Terrace Assisted Living in Spartanburg SC.

Born in Abbeville County,  on March 24, 1921, Mr. Perry was a son of the late John H. Perry and Artie Ayers Perry. He was a graduate of Boys’ High School and attended Forrest College.  He served in the United States Army during World War II, where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart.   Mr. Perry worked in the textile industry for many years having retired as Personnel Director at J.P. Stevens Company. He also lived and worked in Kingsport, TN with the J. P. Stevens Company and was a member and past president of the Kingsport Metropolitan Kiwanis Club.  Upon returning to the Upstate, he was a member of the Piedmont Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award and was a charter member and past president of Piedmont Community Improvement Association.  He was a very involved member of Piedmont United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. 

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Cindy Smith and her husband, Tom of Lexington, NC and Jane Kitzrow and her husband, Jay of Salisbury, MD; son, Joe Perry and his wife, Pamela of Greenville; brother, Thomas Perry of Anderson; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Annie Mae Giles and Mildred Clark and brothers, Albert, Roger, Judson, Ray and Monroe Perry.

A Family Committal Service will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, at 2:00 pm at Piedmont United Methodist Church officiated by the Reverend Justin Gilreath. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

Sara Eunice Sullivan Pracht  

ANDERSON- Sara Eunice Sullivan Pracht of Anderson and Greenville, was born in Anderson South Carolina on October 21, 1929.  She was the daughter of the late Jacob Wannamaker Sullivan, Sr. and Eunice Glenn Sullivan.  In addition to her parents she was predeceased by brothers Jake W. Sullivan, Jr., and Henry Glenn Sullivan. She is survived by one son, J. Chris Pracht, IV and one grandson J. Christopher Pracht, V.  She is also survived by loving care givers, J.B. and Gay Watts, Ms. Pauline Stephenson and Shirley Lance, as well as many members of Buncombe St. United Methodist Church. 

“Miss Eunice”; as she was known to her family and many friends, was a graduate of Anderson High School and Converse College, where she received a BA in English and studied voice.  She was a Poetess whose book "White Heather," was published in 1969.  She was also published in National Poetry and Anthropology and numerous other poetry magazines, as well as the first volume of the South Carolina poetry handbook.  Miss Eunice was a lifetime supporter of Anderson Community Theater.  While she played numerous roles, her favorite role was that of “The Baroness” in My Fair Lady.  She most recently participated in the 75th anniversary Celebration of Anderson Community Theatre, where she appeared in a cameo appearance in 2010.  In addition to her love of poetry and theatre, she loved travelling with her family and friends, cultivating her beloved sweetheart roses, reading, writing and studying her family roots.

She was a member of Buncombe St. United Methodist Church, the Poetry Society of South Carolina in Charleston, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.  She was also a former member of the Anderson Mental Health Association and the South Carolina Mental Health Association.

Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, at Old Silverbrook Cemetery with Rev. Grover Putnam officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8pm at Sullivan King Mortuary, Downtown Chapel, 401 North Main St. The family will be at the home of Chris Pracht; 2011 Edgewood Ave, Anderson South Carolina, 29625.

MSGT FRED JOHNSON, JR. RET’D  

 April 25, 1935 – June 6, 2011

IVA, SC - MSGT Fred Johnson, Jr., Ret’d, age 76, husband of Priscella Alexander Johnson of Iva, died Monday, June 06, 2011.

Born in Greenville, SC, Mr. Johnson was a son of the late Isom Fred Johnson and Annie Olson Johnson.  He was a graduate of Boys’ High School, Class of 1954. Fred retired from the United States Air Force with the rank of Master Sergeant following his 23 years of service, including three tours in Vietnam, and receiving the Air Force Medal of Valor.  He also retired from BASF with 19 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Priscella Alexander Johnson; children, Micheale Hill and her husband, Ross, of Charlotte, NC, Angela Phillips and her husband, Scott, and Marc Johnson and his wife, Denise, all of Anderson, SC.  Also surviving are six grandchildren, Courtney and Caitlin Phillips, Ozan Hill, Emily Hill, Madison Scalf and Gavin Johnson and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers, Earl, Marshall, Theodore, Furman and Bobby Johnson. 

A Graveside Service with Full Military Honors will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 11:00 am at M. J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery officiated by Rev. Donald Johnson.   

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

JUANITA KEEL BROWN

May 22, 1931 – June 2, 2011

ATLANTA, GA - Juanita Keel Brown, age 80, of Atlanta, GA, formerly of Anderson, SC, passed away June 2, 2011.

Born in Anderson, SC on May 22, 1931, Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late James Theo Keel and Hazel Elizabeth Knight Keel.  She was a member of South Cobb Baptist Church in Austell, GA.

Survivors include her sons; Charles Brown, Lane Barnett, Kelvin Barnett and Mark Barnett; brother, Ronald Keel; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, William Keel and two sisters, Pam Keel and Edith Fields.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Sunday, June 5, 2011 from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm with the funeral following in the Chapel at 3:00 pm officiated by the Reverend Chris Sustar.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

DEBORAH DALE

MAY 23, 1954 - MAY 28, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Deborah Sue Gambrell Dale, age 57, of 1101 West Gate Road, passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born May 23, 1954, in Abbeville County, she was a graduate of Dixie High School and retired from Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital as a Mental Health Specialist. A lover of music, she was an avid and passionate soloist and member of Union Grove United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, John Edward Dale, of the home; her uncle, Dewey Gambrell of Abbeville, SC; sisters-in-law: Kathy Dale of Walhalla, SC, Hazel Head of Fair Play, SC, Evelyn Blackwell of Westminster, SC, and Shirley Beaver of Belton, SC; and her brother-in-law, Richard Dale of Pendleton, SC.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her grandmother, Emma Gambrell, who raised Deborah in her home.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3:30pm on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family is at the home and will receive friends at the funeral home from 2pm until 3pm on Tuesday.

DEBBIE MITCHELL

June 19, 1955 – May 31, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Debra Lynn Smith Mitchell, age 55, wife of Howard Cummings Mitchell, Jr., of 313 W. Fredericks Street, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, SC, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Lee Smith and Lida Sue Bruce Smith.  She was an honor graduate of Wren High School, Class of 1973 where she lettered in basketball and track.  She attended Anderson College, Clemson University and Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas.  Debbie retired from Red Lobster Restaurant after 18 years of service.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Hollie Suzanne Mitchell of Anderson, SC; a son, Carroll Lee Ayers of Charleston, SC; a sister, Linda Faye Spearman of Williamston.  Debbie was loved by the Mitchell, Smith and Ayers families, her many nieces, nephews and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 3, 2011 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home.  

The family will be at the residence where a reception will be held following the memorial service.

ANDERSON, SC - E. Estelle Gilbert Brown, age 70 of 57 South Lyons Street, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at her residence.

Born in Anderson, SC, she was a daughter of the late Miles Irvin Gilbert and Bunie Estelle Hicks Gilbert.  She was a former employee of Howard Johnsons and attended Unity Fire Baptized Holiness Church.

Survivors include her sisters, Juanita Powell of Pendleton, SC and Florence Tyson of Kathleen, FL; her brothers, Irvin Gilbert of Starr, SC and Tony Lee of Fort Walton Beach, FL

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, June 3, 2011 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.  In keeping of Mrs. Brown’s final wishes, her remains will be cremated.

ANDERSON, SC – Mrs. Geneva Nichols Brown, age 84, of 1046 Monroe White Road, passed away on Monday, May 31, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born January 4, 1927, in Anderson, SC, she was a 1943 graduate of Anderson Girl’s High School and retired from Owens-Corning Fiberglas after twenty-seven years of service. Mrs. Brown was a member of Middleton Road Baptist Church.

Survivors are one son, Donnie Ray Brown and wife, Linda C. Brown, of Starr, SC; one grandson, Daniel Adam Brown, of Charleston, SC; and three sisters: Bobbie N. Cross of Anderson, SC, Jean N. Alewine of Boerne, TX, and Nancy N. Worley of Anderson, SC.  She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford W. Brown.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, June 2, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Archie Sharpe, the Reverend Heyward Tompkins, and the Reverend Jerry Nation.  A private interment will be held in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6pm until 8pm on Wednesday.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Middleton Road Baptist Church, 1705 Middleton Road, Anderson, SC 29624.
