JOHN RUFUS TAYLOR

October 17, 1928 – April 6, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - John Rufus Taylor, age 82, of 1635 Old Trail Drive, husband of the late Annie Lou James Taylor, died Wednesday, April 06, 2011 at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, SC on October 17, 1928, Mr. Taylor was a son of the late Lawrence Andrew Taylor and Janie Mae Smith Taylor.  He was a United States Navy veteran during WWII and was a supervisor in oil exploration.  He attended Lakeview Baptist Church.

Survivors include his step-sons; Lloyd J. Maxwell and his wife, Eva Maxwell of Pendleton and William P. Maxwell and his wife, Fay A. Maxwell of Pickens.  A number of nieces and nephews also survive.  

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 11:00 am at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with visitation following.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorials and Tribute Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA  23058-5216.

FRANK BROOKS

November 29, 1943 – April 4, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Franklin Marvin Brooks, age 67, of Anderson, died Monday, April 4, 2011 at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.

Born in Anderson, SC, Mr. Brooks was a son of the late Prue Brooks and Irene Strickland Brooks.  He was a United States Navy veteran and had retired from the Pet Milk Corporation in Greenville, SC.

Survivors include his brothers, David L. Brooks of Anderson, SC and Ronald V. Brooks and his wife, Janet E. Brooks of Greenville, SC; three nieces and one nephew.

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 2:30 pm at M. J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery officiated by the Reverend Freddie Fielding and Military Honors provided  by Campbell Patriots Post 184.

The family will be at the home of his niece, Monica Loftis, 208 Miriam Road, Starr, SC and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday from Noon until 2:00 pm.

PETER L. TREFFEISEN

August 24, 1931 – April 4, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Peter Louis Treffeisen, age 79 of Anderson, went to be with his Lord, being reunited with his bride of 38 years, Jerolyn Mayer Treffeisen on April 4, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Merrick, NY on August 24, 1931, Mr. Treffeisen was a son of the late Peter Albert Treffeisen and Johanna Pfeiffer Treffeisen.  He  was a graduate of Mepham High School in Long Island, NY and was a United States Navy  Korean War veteran.   He was employed with Grumman Aerospace in Long Island, NY and upon retirement in 1988, moved to Anderson.

Survivors include his children: Paul Treffeisen and his wife, Kerri of Anderson; Karin Teriaco and her husband, Richard of Simpsonville; Linda Janke and her husband, Don of Anderson; Jill Rogers and her husband, Tommy of Anderson and Erin Bradley and her husband, Steven of Anderson;13 precious grandchildren; sister, Diane Knaack of Freeport, NY

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Albert Treffeisen.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum officiated by his son-in-law, Don Janke with entombment following.

The family will be at the home of his daughter, Jill Rogers, 105 Grassy Knoll Way, Anderson, SC and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

LOUIE MOSELEY

MARCH 8, 1946 – APRIL 2, 2011

BELTON, SC – Louie Edward Moseley, age 65, of 105 Sunset Drive, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born March 8, 1946, in Fair Play, SC, he was a son of the late Lewis Moseley and Eva Whitfield Moseley.  Mr. Moseley was a retired auto-mechanic and was a Mason.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Myrna Luper of Anderson, SC; his children: Cathy Helton of Michigan, Rick Moseley and wife, Patti of Anderson, SC, Michelle Moseley of Belton, SC, Sandy Moseley and wife, Melissa of Belton, SC, and Randy Moseley of Ohio; sister, Doris Moseley of Florida; eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Shelby Mitchell Moseley; one brother, Billy Moseley; and one sister, Margaret Baxter.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Sam Duncan. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family is at the residence, 105 Sunset Drive, Belton, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6pm until 8pm on Monday.

SENIOR AIRMAN NICHOLAS J. ALDEN, USAF

MILDENHALL, ENGLAND – The Funeral Service for Senior Airman Nicholas Jerome Alden, USAF, age 25, will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 19, 2011, in the Sanctuary of Boulevard Baptist Church, 700 Boulevard, Anderson, SC. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery, 140 Inway Drive, Anderson, SC.

Senior Airman Alden was born September 24, 1985 in Stuttgart, Germany, and was a graduate of Palmetto High School.  Following graduation, he joined the United State Air Force and attained the rank of Senior Airman.  

Survivors include his beloved wife, Patricia Brooks Alden and children: Lillian & William, all of Mildenhall, England; mother, Cathy Garner of Iva, SC; father, James Alden of Ayer, MA; siblings: Joe Alden of Indianapolis, IN, David Alden of Washington, DC, and Kelseyanne Alden of Atlanta, GA; and grandparents: Rothert & Delight Whitfield of Abbeville, SC.

JACK WALLS

January 16, 1937 – March 16, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - James “Jack” Wallace Walls, age 74, husband of Jeanette Carol Crook Walls of 523 Ivy Circle, was called home to be with his Lord after a long battle with Lou Gehrig Disease on Wednesday, March 16, 2011.  

Born in Anderson, SC on January 16, 1937, Mr. Walls was a son of the late James Marvin Walls and Lucy Irene Gilliam Walls.  He was a 1954 graduate of Boys’ High School and served in the United States Army Reserves as Sergeant 1st Class for over 29 years.  He was the owner and operator of Walls Drywall for many years.  Mr. Walls was a volunteer at Broadway Fire Station, and was the manager of the Singing Walls Family.  He was a member of Homeland Park Church of God where he was superintendent of the Sunday School Department and was very instrumental in many aspects of the church. He was an avid softball fan and played with the Big John’s Softball Team for many years.

Survivors include his wife of the home; children, Donna W. Vaughn and her husband, Chris, Sandra W. Evans and Greg Walls, all of Anderson;  five grandchildren, Blake and his girlfriend, Lindsey, Maghan, Caleb, Brianna, Bailee and one great-grandson, Jaxon; siblings, Lorene Bolt of Belton, Sue Bates of Anderson, Mary Richey of Belton, Gwen Walters of Anderson, J. P. Walls of Hartwell, GA and Tommy Walls of Anderson.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a granddaughter, Hope Evans.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Homeland Park  Church of God officiated by the Reverends Vernon Soles, Doug Saylors and Mark Daniel.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park officiated by the Reverends Roy Puckett and Scott Vaughn and Layman David Black

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday, March 19, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.  Mr. Walls will be placed in the church at 1:00 pm on Sunday.

JOE R. BRIDWELL

ANDERSON, SC -- Joe R Bridwell, age 80, of 58 Oleander Drive, departed his life on earth to live eternally with his heavenly father, on March 17th at the Rainey Hospice House.    

Born November 10, 1930, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late J.B. and Blanche Knighton Bridwell. Mr. Bridwell served in the United States Marine Corp. He was a well known and successful realtor in Anderson for more than 35 years and reluctantly retired from Remax Foothills Realty after a decline in his health. Prior to a wonderful career in Real Estate, he retired from Smith Wholesale Drug Company in Spartanburg, SC. Mr. Bridwell was a Shriner and a member of Masonic Lodge No 274, a member of the Anderson Upstate Board of Realtors - having served on numerous committees, and was a member of Concord Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Carroll Bridwell and his constant “little” companion, Buddy of the home. Also surviving are a son, Rick Bridwell of Anderson, SC; daughters, Mary Jo Splawn and husband Carroll, Judy Webb and husband Dean, all of Anderson, SC, and Linda Rettew Rushton and husband Steve of Pendleton, SC. Eight grandchildren are surviving: Bobby Rettew and wife Sarah, Jennifer Rettew, Amanda Locotosh and husband Chris, Marc Splawn, Brent Bridwell and wife Tasha, Matt Bridwell, Ross Bridwell, and Jacob Webb and wife Krystal. A brother-in-law, Jerry Carroll and wife Brenda of Spartanburg, SC, and one great grandchild, Isabella Webb and step grandchildren: Stephanie Rushton, Geoffrey Rushton and wife Jassica, step great grandchildren Wesley Rushton, Parker Metcalf and Carys Metcalf are also surviving.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 19, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Don R. Cox.  Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the home and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday.  Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.

CAROL KIRKLAND

March 28, 1942 – March 10, 2011

IVA, SC - Carol Faye Beaird Kirkland, age 68, wife of the late Fred Allen Kirkland of 8751 Highway 187 South, Iva, SC, died Thursday, March 10, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Montgomery, AL, Mrs. Kirkland was a daughter of the late Harvey Thomas Beaird and Mary Idella Kirkland Beaird.  She traveled and was stationed in many parts of the world with her husband during his military service and later settled in the Anderson area in 1979.  She was a member of Poplar Spring Baptist Church.   

She is survived by her daughter, Tina Nichols and her husband, Larry of Anderson; three sons, Terry Kirkland and his wife, LaDona of Woodbridge, VA, Howard Kirkland of Jasper, AL and Keith Kirkland of Iva; four grandchildren, Misty Nichols, Laura Nichols, Cynthia Kirkland and Halli Walls and two great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Rayleigh.  She is also survived by a sister.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 3:00 pm at Poplar Spring Baptist Church officiated by the Reverends James Rodgers and Ed Hunsinger.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

GREG SPRINKLE

June 2, 1938 – March 8, 2011

ANDERSON, SC- Gregory Jerome Sprinkle, age 72, of 337 Knollwood Drive, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Marion, VA on June 2, 1938, Mr. Sprinkle was a son of the late Glenn Sprinkle and Isabel Grogan Sprinkle.  He was a United States Army Veteran and retired from the Trenton Sheet Metal Workers Union, Local #27.  He was a Past Master of the Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge #14, Past Patron of the Mt. Holly Eastern Starr #120 and a Past Exalted Ruler of the Mt. Holly Elks Club, all of Mt. Holly, NJ.  Mr. Sprinkle was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Anna Otterson Sprinkle of the home; daughter, Irene E. Sprinkle of Little Egg Harbor, NJ; siblings, Glenn Sprinkle, Jr., of Greenville, SC, Nancy Tillman and her husband, Alvin of Bristol, TN, Kenneth Sprinkle and his wife, Marie of Fountain Inn, SC, Jonathan Sprinkle and his wife, Suzanne of Greenville, SC, David Sprinkle and his wife, Lynn of St. Helena’s Island, SC and Judith Evatt of Belton, SC. 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Ann Sprinkle and a brother, William Sprinkle.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 11, 2011 at 7:00 pm at New Prospect Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Tony Smith. His ashes will be interred in the church cemetery at a later date.    The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service.

LUTHER BLACKWELL

ANDERSON, SC - Luther Eugene “Gene” Blackwell, age 92, of 311 Simpson Road and long-time resident of Lake Shore Drive, died Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, SC, Mr. Blackwell was a son of the late William Fletcher Blackwell and Dolia Ione Bowen Blackwell.  He retired from textiles and was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Sybil Smith Blackwell of the home; daughters, Betty Holliday-Smith and Brenda McClure, both of Anderson, SC, Marilyn Knowles of Chapin, SC, Carolyn Stewart-Martin of Anderson, SC and Judy Bryan of Savannah, GA; brother, Dewitt Blackwell; sisters, Margaret Jones, Pearl Harrington and Alice Hendrix; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sons, Herbert Alton Blackwell, Tommy David Blackwell and Luther Eugene “Sonny” Blackwell, Jr., three brothers and three sisters.

A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Hwy 81 N, officiated by the Reverend Thomas C. Maxwell.   Immediately following the graveside service, the family will host a reception at Sullivan’s Metropolitan Grill, 208 S. Main St, Anderson.

The family will be at the home of his daughter, Betty Holliday-Smith, 2910 Midway Road, Anderson, SC and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, March 11, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm

HUGH MARTIN

June 12, 1925 – March 7, 2011

PENDLETON, SC - Hugh Edward Martin, age 85, husband of Louise Durham Martin of 716 Long Road, died Monday, March 07, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, SC, he was a son of the late John Will Martin and Ruth Byrd Martin.  He served in the United States Marine Corps and retired from the S.C. National Guard.  He was a former employee of Milliken Corporation and was a member of the V. F. W. and the Marine Corps League of Anderson. 

Survivors include his wife of the home; son, Baree Martin of Pendleton; daughters, Sharon Martin of Pendleton and Cindy Ramsey of Acworth, GA and brother, Harold Martin of Pendleton. 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Adger Martin, Bill Martin and Sarden Martin and sisters, Catherine Matthews and Nettie Gibson.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Chad Campbell.  Interment will follow in Memory Gardens, Clemson, SC with Military Honors.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm.
