Charles Shaw

ANDERSON, SC Charles Edward Shaw, 86, died Tuesday, November, 19, 2013, at the Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson, S.C. 

Shaw, a native of Anderson, was the son of Albert and Pearlie Lee Evans Shaw of Anderson. He was a graduate of Hardin High School, joined the U.S. Navy at 17 to serve in World War II, and after his service earned a degree in engineering from the University of South Carolina. For most of his career, Shaw was a design engineer for Southern Railway and helped to develop the “piggyback” cars used to transport freight. He was also a vice president at R.L. Banks & Associates transportation consultants in Washington, D.C.

He is survived by: a daughter, Peggy Jo Shaw of Decatur, Ga.; grandchildren Melissa Basabe (Bert), Brendan Beatty, Elisabeth Beatty, Brian Parcell and Phillip Parcell; great-grandchildren Amanda and David Basabe; former wife and friend Idamay Shaw; and many loving nieces, nephews, and family members. He was pre-deceased by his parents, his brothers, and a daughter, Rowena Jean Shaw Vaughan.

The Memorial Service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. The committal of Charles’ ashes will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military honors.

LILLIE BELL PRESSLEY

Lillie Bell Pressley, age 89, formally of E Street in Anderson, died on Monday, December 2, 2013, at Diamond Health and Rehab in Simpsonville, SC.  Born in Hartwell, GA, she was the daughter of the late Hurley Pressley and the late Lecie Bailey Pressley.   Lillie Bell was retired from Anderson Mill where she was employed as a weaver.  She was a faithful and longtime member of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church.   

She is survived by a brother, John Pressley of Anderson and three grandchildren.  Lillie Bell was preceded in death by a son, Marion Dennis Pressley, and a daughter Bobbie Jean Brown.  

A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 6, 2013, at 10 AM at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, with Rev. Brent Lollis and Mr. Harry Osborne officiating.  Friends will be received at The McDougald Funeral Home on Thursday from 5:00 PM until 6:30 PM.

LARRY WHITTEN

ANDERSON, SC - Larry Franklin Whitten, age 72, of Anderson, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2013 at his residence.

Born in Anderson, on December 31, 1940, he was the son of the late Claude Kenny Whitten and the late Jessie Leon Whitten.  He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.  Larry had worked in textiles for over 40 years, first working at Gluck Mill and later at Haynesworth Mill as an engineer in the maintenance department.  He was an avid golfer and enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church. 

He is survived by his children, Russel Whitten and his wife Vickie, and Christi Charette, all of Anderson, SC; three sisters, Betty Perry, Frances Callaway and Gloria Whitten, all of Anderson; and two granddaughters, Brittany Whitten and Jessica Charette.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Ruth Ledford Whitten; and a sister, Claudia Tilley.

The Graveside Service will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend J. Floyd Stansell, Jr. officiating.

Sally Wyatt

Anderson - Sally Marilyn Ann Wyatt, 75, of 3009 Cobbs Way, died Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born February 23, 1938 in Northfield, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Ethel Irene Porter Riley. She was a homemaker and a member of Eureka Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Bob E. Wyatt of the home; two sons, Robert Wyatt and James Allan Wyatt of Cleveland, Ohio; two daughters, Pamela Woo and husband, Bradley of Champagne, Illinois and Penny Lynn Taylor and husband, Troy of Verona, Italy; and five grandchildren, Jessica Wyatt, Madison Woo, Sirena Woo, Noah Taylor and Rowen Taylor. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Riley.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Dr. Ron Fousek and Rev. Robert Dickard. The family will receive friends at the mortuary following the service.

LUCILE POWELL BARTON

ANDERSON, SC - Lucile Powell Barton, age 95, formerly of 314 D Street, Anderson, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Ware Shoals, SC, on October 20, 1918, she was the daughter of the late William Arthur Powell and the late Lucy Gibson Powell.  She retired from Anderson Mill with over 25 years of service.  She was a faithful member of Taylor Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher. 

She is survived by two sons, Reverend Douglas B. Barton and his wife Remy of the Phillipines and Donnie L. Barton and his wife Joyce, of Anderson; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Barton of Anderson; 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Barton; a son, Charles W. Barton; two sisters, Myrthel Williams and Margie Powell; two brothers, Reid and Frank Powell and one grandson, Bradford Barton.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, December 1, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the McDougald Funeral Home.  Interment will follow at Old Silver Brook Cemetery.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

HASKELL MONROE BURTON

Haskell Monroe Burton, age 92, of Anderson, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, SC, he was the son of the late Furman Monroe Burton and the late Janie Looney Burton.  Haskell graduated from Clemson University in 1941. He worked in textile management for many years at JP Stevens.  He was a member of First Baptist Church of Anderson. 

He is survived by his spouse, Frances Eloise Burton; his children, Joseph Richard Burton and his wife Catherine Zwicky Burton, of Dallas, TX, Tommy Burton and his wife Karen of Clover, SC and Anne Burton, of Greer, SC; six grandchildren, Michael Burton, Jonathan Burton, Anthony Burton, Maggie Caroline Hall, Hannah Burton, Jacob Burton; and two great-grandchildren. 

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Charles Robert “Robby” Burton and a brother, Joseph Burton.

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Dr. Walter Coleman and Dr. Jim Thomason officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

Robert Klatt

ANDERSON, SC - Robert “Bob” Warren Klatt, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at his residence.

Born in The Bronx, NY, on August 2, 1925, he was the son of the late August Oscar Klatt and the late Emma Bargon Klatt.  Bob proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was a Vice President of Sales and a Business Owner. He was a member of the Board of Directors at Anderson University. Bob was very active in founding GAMAC, Hospice of the Upstate and the Anderson Arts Center.  He was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church in Anderson, SC.

He is survived by a son, Kimberly August Klatt and his wife Maureen Kennedy Klatt; two daughters, Jane “Alice” Klatt Burwell and her husband Dana Burwell and Jennifer Potter Klatt King and her husband Jeffrey King; a daughter-in-law, Christina Gartner Klatt; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Carson Potter Klatt and his son, Robert W. Klatt II.

A Service to celebrate the life of Mr. Robert Klatt will be held at Boulevard Baptist Church, service times will be announced at a later date.

MARY C. “DELLA” BYRUM

Mary Cleveland Byrum, age 88, of 438 Morningside Drive, entered eternal rest upon her death on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at Rainey Hospice House.  Born in Hart County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Fred E. Cleveland and the late Beatrice Sanders Cleveland.  For 64 years, she was the loving and devoted wife of George F. Byrum of the residence.  Mrs. Byrum was a retired line worker from the Singer Company.  She was of the Baptist faith. 

In addition to her husband, George, she is survived by a son, Tommy Byrum and his wife, Debbie, of Townville;  a daughter, Brenda Bowen and her husband, Whitner, of Anderson;  2 brothers, Albert Cleveland and his wife, Arlene, and Johnny Cleveland, both of Kannapolis, NC; a sister, Sheila Carruth of Hartwell;  also surviving are 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents, Della was preceded in death by a son, Aubrey Byrum; a sister, Audry C. Rowland; and 6 brothers, Francis, Jule, Bill, Earl, Jack, and Ray Cleveland.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate the life of Mrs. Byrum will be held on Friday, November 29, 2013, at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, with Rev. Sam Duncan officiating.  Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.  The family will be at their respective residences, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

LESTER LEV “BILL” BAILEY

Lester Lev “Bill” Bailey, age 78, of Anderson, passed away at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston on Sunday, November 24, 2013.  Born in Canon, GA, he was the son of the late Denzil Gracen Bailey and the late Edna Sue Peeples Bailey.  He was the loving and devoted husband of Judy Bailey of the residence, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mr. Bailey was retired from Monroe Auto Equipment Company, where he served as a shipping clerk.  He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict in the US Navy aboard the USS James C. Owens (DD776), as a Boatswain's Mate.  Lev was also a lifetime member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and a disabled veteran.

In addition to his wife, Judy, survivors include 3 step-sons James R. Welsh  (Diane) of Iva, Donald Haynie Welsh (Carolyn) of Easley, and Mike McCollum (Stephanie) of Anderson;  3 step-daughters, Sonja W. Templeton (Tommy) of Rock Hill, SC, Sandra W. Hembree (Ralph) of Gastonia, NC, and Sheila W. Cheek (Doug) of Taylors, SC;  1 brother, Eddie Dean Bailey of Hartwell, GA; and a sister, Mary Lou Cleveland, also of Hartwell.  Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie Haynie Welsh Bailey; brothers Hershel Bailey and Jerry Daniel Bailey; and a sister Gracie Allen Bailey.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Bailey will be held on Friday, November 29, 2013, at 2 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church, with Rev. Paul Frey officiating.  Interment will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery. The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday from 11:30 AM until 1:30 PM.

FLORENCE L. COLLINS

TOCCOA, GA - Florence Collins, age 90, of Toccoa, GA, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Cliff Jordan and the late Pearlee Gambrell Booth.  She retired from textiles after many years of service.  Florence was an avid gardener and enjoyed her flowers.  She was of the Baptist faith. 

She is survived by her husband, Emory W. Collins, of Toccoa, GA; sons, Jim Brown (Pam) and Phil Brown (Becky), both of Iva, SC, daughters, Margie B. Swaney (Charles), of Pendleton, SC, Lois Williamson (Hurshall), of Starr, SC, Aileen Kay (Buddy), of Anderson, SC, Jean Kilgore of Anderson and Ann Moore of Anderson, SC; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two son-in-laws, Claude Kilgore and Bobby Moore.

The Graveside Service will be held at Iva City Cemetery on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Dwight Greene officiating.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

LOUISE L. BLUME

ANDERSON, SC - Mildred Louise Lewis Blume, age 88, wife of James Otis Blume, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, SC on May 7, 1925 she was the daughter of the late John Leland Lewis and the late Lettie Moore Lewis.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Midway Baptist Church. Louise was a loving, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she enjoyed doing for others especially baking. 

In addition to her husband of 69 years, she is survived by two sons; James (Cynthia) Blume, of Hampton, SC and Roger (Linda) Blume, of Ellore, SC; two daughters, Linda Gail McMurchie, of Iva, SC and Dixie Ledford, of Lebanon, IL; ten grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Blume and seven brothers and sisters.

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 29, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverend Chad Charles and Reverend Steve McKee officiating.  Interment will follow in South Lawn Memorial Gardens, Starr SC.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm.

“Chief” Dan Hogan

Anderson - Daniel Jefferson “Chief” Hogan, 87, husband of the late Mary Hogan, died Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born February 7, 1926 in McCormick, he was the son of the late John Lee and Pearl Lee Dobson Dillingham Hogan. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of W.W. II where he served in the American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific and the European Theater and was also a Veteran of the Korean War. After retirement from the Navy in 1965, he was an educator at T.L. Hanna and McDuffie High Schools where he was instrumental in the formation of the NJROTC Program at both schools. Mr. Hogan was a member of the Fleet Reserve Unit #324 where he was Past President and Master at Arms; a member of the V.F.W. Post 5996 where he was Past Commander and Past Home Committee Chairman; American Legion Post 184; Hiram Masonic Lodge; Past Hejaz Temple, and the Tin Can Sailors. He was a member of Toxaway United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher and Past President of the Board of Trustees.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharron Barnett and husband, Jim of Greensboro, NC and Sheila Hogan and fiance, Michael Wood of Anderson; one son, Daniel J. Hogan, Jr. and wife, Deborah of Anderson; grandchildren, Kendra Marie Elliott, Mary Danielle Elliott Smith, Sheila Hogan Barnett, William Hogan Barnett and Daniel J. Hogan III; great grandchildren, Darby Marie Elliott, Mariclare Catherine Smith, Grace Isabelle Hogan, and Gabrielle Nicole Hogan; and one sister, Mamie Bodenheimer.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded  in death by a granddaughter, Grace Nicole Hogan. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Kirt Stutler. Entombment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Military Honors conducted by the Campbell Patriots Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:30 Friday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence.
