Anderson's Dr. Arthur H. "Artie" Spitz, Dies at 97

Anderson - Arthur H. "Artie" Spitz, 97, of Anderson, SC, passed away today at Marchbanks Memory Care Facility. 

Artie was born on February 11, 1916 in West New York, NJ to Herman and Florence Spitz. His siblings were Robert Edward Spitz and Helen Marie Spitz Drummond. Artie married Jewel Elizabeth Sawyer of Johnston, SC in May of 1942.

Artie graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1941. While at the University of South Carolina, he was on the track team and was captain of the Fencing Team. He continued his education at the Southern College of Optometry in 1947, At the Southern College, he earned a Doctors degree and was the President of the senior class. While at the Southern College, Artie received the L.A. Farmer Memorial Award given to the most promising student. He served in both the United States Army and the Medical Division of the Merchant Marines during World War II. In 1961, he received the Chamber of Commerce Community Development Award. He served as President of the Anderson Lions Club in 1969, Master Mason with Hiram Lodge #68, President of the South Carolina Optometry Association in 1971 and was the South Carolina Optometrist of the Year in 1972. He was one of the founders of the Western Carolina Sailing Club and became a lifetime charter member. 

Artie lived his entire business life in Anderson, SC. He was the founder of the EyeCare Center with offices over the years in Anderson, Honea Path, Williamston, Powdersville and Seneca. Artie was a Charter Member and on the Board of Directors in establishing the Boulevard Baptist Church. He later became a member of the Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson.

Artie was an avid sailor, tennis player, gardener and a much loved bridge player.

Artie was survived by his daughter, Anne Spitz Holliman and her husband, Michael of Anderson; grandson, Brenton Hayes Clark and his wife, Crystal and their children, Caden and Mia all of Lexington, SC; grandson, Jason Bryan Holliman and his wife, Brittney and their children, Ashton and Everett all of Marietta, GA.

Artie's son, Thomas Lewis Spitz; granddaughters, Elizabeth Sawyer Spitz and Caroline Arrington Spitz Lawrimore and her husband, Hunter and their children, James and Harrison all of Charleston, SC. 

Also surviving are special friends Dr. James Bleckley, Keith and Brenda Smith and the Staff of Marchbanks Memory Care Facility, especially Eric Hill and Sadie.

Artie was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel Spitz in December 2001 after 59 years of marriage; son, William Arthur Spitz in July of 1987, brother, Robert Spitz in December 2000 and sister, Helen Spitz Drummond in October 1999. 

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 12:30p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Dr. David Bailey and Rev. Beryl Rosenberger officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:30 til 12p.m. at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 Hwy 81 N.

The family is at the home of the daughter, 905 Meadow Lane, Anderson.

Robert Glenn McConnell

ANDERSON, SC - Robert Glenn McConnell, age 89 of Wilmont Street, Anderson, SC passed away on November 2, 2013.  

He was born August 4, 1924 and was retired from Davis Electrical and Fluor Daniel. He was a faithful member of the Varennes Heights Baptist Church for over 45 years serving as an usher and attending the Men’s Sunday School Class.  He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed many outdoor activities especially his garden.   He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Gilstrap McConnell of 66 years; two daughters Mary McConnell Drew and her husband Dr. Sam Drew, and Martha McConnell Houston and her husband Reverend Mitch Houston all of Columbia, SC; a sister Ruby McConnell Lovell; 4 grandchildren, Dr. John Drew and his wife Jessica, Dr. Emily Drew, Christopher Houston and Benjamin Houston; and one great grandson, Jackson Drew.

In addition to his parents, George Newton and Sally Crone McConnell, he was preceded in death by his siblings, George McConnell, Opal McConnell Newsome, Earl McConnell, Frank McConnell and Cecil McConnell.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Kirk Mitchell and Reverend Weldon Sellers officiating.  Interment will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery.   The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home prior to the service from Noon until 12:45 p.m.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Varennes Heights Baptist Church Building Fund, 411 Visage Drive, Anderson, SC  29626.

OPAL M. SWANEY

ANDERSON, SC - Opal M. Swaney, age 79, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Oconee County, SC on April 26, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Macie Grant Mize. 

She was a graduate of Townville High School and was a self-employed cosmetologist. She was the owner of Opal’s Style Shop for 45 years.  She was a member of Fants Grove Baptist Church   

She is survived by a son Wayne Swaney(Donna) of Pendleton, SC, daughter, Elaine Williams of Pendleton, SC, three brothers Dewitt Mize (Lou) of Seneca, SC, Odell Mize, Seneca, SC, Nelson Mize(Jeanette of Waianae, HI, two sisters, Willene Moore, Seneca, SC and Betty McGaha (Ken) of Seneca, SC, a sister-in-law Juanita Mize of Seneca, SC, four grandchildren, Jason Williams Summer), of Pendleton, SC,  Jenna King (Justin) of Clemson, SC, Jamie Swaney, Josh Swaney (Tammy) of Antrerville, SC  and five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild . 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Willie Edward Swaney, and her brothers Leland Mize, and Joe Mize.  

The Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Fants Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Robert Castro, Evangelist Jimmie Clark and Reverend Josh Hensley.  Interment will follow at Memory Gardens, in Clemson, SC.   

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, November 4, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

MARGARET PORTER

ANDERSON, SC - Margaret Etta Whitfield Porter, age 75, of Anderson, SC passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at her residence.

Born in Pendleton, SC, on May 4, 1938, she was the daughter of the late John Madison Whitfield and the late Helen McGaha Whitfield.  She worked at JP Stevens in Clemson for over 50 years.  She enjoyed quilting and crocheting and loved animals of all kinds.  She was a member of River of Life Church of God.

She is survived by her children, Troy Alexander Porter and his wife Susan of Denver, NC and Karen Gilstrap and her husband Larry, of Anderson, SC; two brothers, Jerry Whitfield and his wife Betty and Steve Whitfield and his wife Linda, all of Anderson, SC; four grandchildren, Alton Gilstrap and his wife Allison, Adam Gilstrap and his wife Sarah, Krystal McKee and Joel and Jacob Porter; six great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. 

The funeral service will be held at River of Life Church of God on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Kevin Jones and Reverend Marion Snyder officiating.  Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Sandy Springs, SC 

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the church on Saturday, prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. 

The family would like to thank all the staff of AnMed Health Cancer Center and Hospice of the Upstate for their care shown to Mrs. Porter during her illness.

JULIA I. TURNER

ANDERSON, SC - Julia Ilene Turner, age 58, of Anderson, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at her residence.

Born in Tracy, CA, on May 26, 1955, she was the daughter of David Eugene Turner and Othel Dorthine “Dot” Elam Turner.  She resided in Modesto, CA during her childhood and attended the John F. Kennedy School.  She moved to Anderson along with her family in 1989.  She worked at McDonalds and most recently at Walgreens Distribution Center. Julia was a member of High Praises Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Stephen Turner and his wife Janet, of Anderson, SC; and two nephews, John Turner of Chattanooga, TN and Matthew Turner, of Charleston, SC. 

The Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at Hope Fellowship on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Mark Gusque officiating. The family will gather for a time of visitation following the service. 

The family will be at the home of her brother, 115 Glory Lane, Anderson, SC 29626.

MARGARET WILSON

WILLIAMSTON, SC - Margaret I. Wilson, age 62, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2013, at the Rainey Hospice House. Born in Washington, DC on July 31, 1951, she was the daughter of Viola Hackett of Belton and the late Sinclair Hackett.  She volunteered as a Rescue Squad Captain with the Potomac Heights Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Potomac Heights, MD.  In 1991, Mrs. Wilson was named squad person of the year.  She was a member of NewSpring Church in Anderson.  Margaret was a 1969 graduate of Oxon Hill Senior High School, Oxon Hill, MD. 

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Bernard Wilson; their children, Bernard Wilson II and his wife Tonya, of West Pelzer, SC, and Tina Wilson Beers and husband Michael, of Williamston, SC; two brothers, Sinclair “Moe” and Roy Hackett; a sister, Linda Parker; and six grandchildren, Hope Tench, Sarah Branson, Katelyn Wilson, Madison Wilson, Mikayla Beers and Austin Beers.  Perhaps Mrs. Wilson’s greatest passion was caring for her grandchildren. 

The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 11 AM, with Rev. Trevor Cox officiating.   Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. 

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, November 1, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Ann Daniel-Rutter

Anderson - Ann Junkins Daniel-Rutter, 79, of Anderson, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at NHC of Anderson.  

Born October 17, 1934 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Floree Bishop Junkins. Ann was twice widowed, first to the late Walter (Wad) Daniel, Jr. and second to the late Howard F. Rutter. She was retired from Consolidated Southern Industries (CSI)  and member of Pope Drive Baptist Church.  

Surviving are her daughter, Cathy Daniel Browne (Ross); daughter-in-law, Caroline King Daniel; grandchildren, Chris Browne (Susannah) all of Anderson, Clarke Browne of Jackson Hole, Wy and Amber Nicole Daniel of Anderson; great grandsons, Tucker Ross Browne and Turner Luke Browne and a brother, Ansel Junkins (Barbara) of Anderson.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her son, Walter (Dub) Daniel, III.  

Funeral services will be held 2p.m. Friday at Sullivan-King Mortuary with Dr. Mack Tester officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 1 until 2p.m. prior to the service at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 Hwy 81 N.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Cathy Browne, 542 Drayton Circle, Anderson.

CHIEF ED McCOWN

ANDERSON, SC - Edward Jackson McCown, 96, of Anderson, passed away on October 27, 2013.  

Ed served on the City of Anderson Police Department. He joined the force in 1940 as a patrolman and was promoted through the ranks, retiring as Police Chief in 1982 after 42 years of service. Chief McCown was dedicated to his career in law enforcement and to the City of Anderson. He especially was proud of the School Boy Patrol he organized and mentored in the City Schools for many years. Chief McCown was a charter member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association and served as their secretary for several years.  He served the City continuously except for the 30 months he spent in the United States Navy during WWII on active shore patrol.  

As a native of Anderson, he was a graduate of Boys’ High School Class of 1935, and later attended Clemson College. He was a lifelong member of The First Baptist Church and devoted member of the Baraca Class. Ed was also a charter member of The Midday Lion’s Club.

Ed was a dedicated family man, who loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Moore of Anderson; son, Jack McCown and his wife Donna of Tuscaloosa, AL; grandchildren, Andrea Moore Bach and her husband Bruce of Naples, FL, Christopher McCown and his wife Gill of Birmingham, AL, and Ellen Spann and her husband JT of Tuscaloosa, AL; and great-grandchildren Claire and Kate Bach.  Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, of 67 years; parents, Samuel Augustus and Maude Payne McCown; brothers, Bert, James, Aubrey, Manning, Henry, Wallace and Bill; sisters, Maude Bowen and Cora Smith. 

A funeral service for Chief McCown will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at 3:30 PM at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. James Thomason officiating.  Interment will follow at Old Silver Brook Cemetery.  The Honorary Escort will be composed of members of the Anderson Police Department and the Baraca Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends at the McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.

The family suggests that contributions in memory of Chief McCown may be made to the First Baptist Church of Anderson, Building Fund, 307 South Manning Street, Anderson, SC 29621.

Victor Carosiello

Anderson - Victor Bartley Carosiello, 27, of 726 Sunny Shore Lane, died Friday, October 25, 2013.

Born July 15, 1986 in Greenville, he was the son of Allen Victor and Marjorie Griffith Carosiello. He was a graduate of Pendleton High School and attended Clemson University where he studied Architecture. Victor was an Eagle Scout for Troop 205 and was Inventory Manager for Best Buy. 

Survivors include his parents of the home; one brother, Anthony “Gryff” Carosiello of Anderson who attends Duke Divinity School; and his Godfather, Chuck Evans.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Victor Lewis and Luella Maxine Carosiello and his maternal grandparents, George Richard and Anjoy Franklin Griffith. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at St. John's United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dan Batson and Rev. Richard Brennan. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence.

ROBERT LAMAR WHITFIELD

ANDERSON, SC - Robert Lamar Whitfield, age 82, of Anderson, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2013, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Fair Play, SC, he was the son of the late Robert Horace Whitfield and the late Christine Bradberry Whitfield.  He proudly served his country in the United States Army and held the rank of Army Supply Sargent. He was the owner and operator of Anderson Lumber Company.  Robert was a member of Salem Baptist Church.

He is survived by his son, Terry Whitfield (Pam), of Anderson; a daughter, Cheryl Whitfield, of Anderson; five grandchildren, Chad Dyar, Robbie Whitfield (Katie), Keri Dyar Davis (Jarrett), Jeff Whitfield (Kristen), and Kelli Whitfield Freeman (Preston); and nine great-grandchildren, Jake Davis, McKenzie Whitfield, Jenna Davis, Jolie Kate Davis, Max Whitfield, Kylie Whitfield, Karson and Tanner Freeman and McKenna Whitfield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Donald Whitfield and  6 siblings.

The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Dr. Charles Holland officiating.  Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. 

The family will be at the home of his daughter, Cheryl, 155 Tully Drive, Anderson and will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

MRS. MAE B. FRETWELL

ANDERSON, SC - Mrs. Mae Barton Fretwell was born March 17, 1918, in Erie, PA, and was the daughter of the late William Harleston Barton and Willena Harper Barton.  She was the wife of the late Raymond Fretwell, Jr. Mrs. Fretwell passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at the Presbyterian Home in Easley.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Anderson where she held the rank of life membership of Presbyterian Women.  She was a charter member of the Hospital Auxiliary where she also held a life membership.

Survivors include her children: son, Robert B. Fretwell and wife , Carol of Anderson; daughters, Sally Smith and husband, Ben of Anderson and Anne Peeler and husband, Jerry of Greenville; grandchildren, Mrs. Dexter (Mary Anne) Williams, Benjamin Mark Smith and Harleston Barton Smith, all of Anderson, Mrs. A.P. (Catherine Fretwell) New of Greenwood, Mrs Charlie (Susan Peeler) Boswell of Simpsonville, Mrs. Gus (Christy Fretwell) Moore of Athens, and Mrs. Jordan (Jennifer Leigh Fretwell) Marchbanks of Anderson; 17 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a grandson, Joseph J. Fretwell, IV; her brother, James Harleston Barton; and her great-grandson, Samuel Cutliff.

Following a private family committal service at Old Silver Brook Cemetery in Anderson, a Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Anderson, SC on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. conducted by Reverend Dr. Dennis Tedder, Reverend Caroline Berardi and Reverend Julie Schaaf.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Foothills Presbyterian Community and Lutheran Hospice for their loving care.

JOHNNY “JAY JAY” VICKERY, JR.

HONEA PATH, SC - Johnny “Jay Jay” Herbert Vickery, Jr., of Honea Path, SC, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at his residence.

Born in Anderson, SC, he was the son of Johnny Herbert Vickery, Sr. and Debra Jean Shaw Vickery, both of Honea Path, SC.  He graduated in 1994 from Dixie High School.  He was employed at Timken as a process associate.  Jay Jay loved spending time with his family and friends and enjoyed mud riding.  He attended Lighthouse Baptist Church in Abbeville, SC.

He is survived by his wife, Christal Vickery, of the home; his son, Blaine Vickery, of Honea Path, SC; two daughters, Jaylin Vickery and Jaycee Vickery, of Honea Path, SC; two brothers, Josh Vickery, of Pelzer, SC and Jason Vickery and his wife Chastity of Ware Shoals, SC; two nephews, Caleb and Jackson Vickery and one niece, Lexi Vickery; his father-in-law, Tony Stone; and a brother-in-law, T.J. Stone and his daughter Journi. 

He was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan Jordan Vickery.

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Pastor Robbie Burton and Pastor Johnny H. Vickery, Sr. officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. 

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, October 31, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
