BILL ELROD

ANDERSON – William Derrell Elrod, Jr., 48, of 2300 Old Williamston Road, died Saturday, May 29, 2010 at his residence. 

Born July 13, 1961 in Anderson, he was the son of William Derrell Elrod, Sr. and Mary M. Christopher. He was previously employed with Roadway for 20 years. He was a loving husband and father. He was an avid Harley-Davidson Rider. 

Survivors include his wife, RoseMarie P. Elrod of the home; children, Bobby Lloyd of Greenwood, William Thomas Soper of Florida, Christina Brainard of Ashville, NC, Dustin Elrod of the home, Sarah Lloyd of Anderson, Ashley Elrod of New York, Daniel Elrod of Greenville, Samantha Lloyd and Christian Elrod, both of Anderson; 11 grandchildren; father and mother, Derrell and Kathy Elrod of Batesburg; mother and father, Mary and Steve Christopher of Pelzer; three brothers, Joe Leonard Elrod of Simpsonville, John Keith Elrod of Virginia, and Joe William Elrod of Pendleton; and a sister, Katie Moon of Belton. 

Services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 2010 at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson, conducted by Rev. Alan Rhodes. The family will receive friends following the service. The family is at the residence.

JAMES E. SANDERS

February 21, 1929 – May 29, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – James E. Sanders, age 81, of 107 Perpetual Square, husband of Patsy Ruth Lowe Sanders, passed away May 29, 2010, at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Hartwell, GA., he was a son of the late Elton Burton Sanders and Vennie Ethridge Sanders.  He graduated from Boys High School and was a Engineer with Owens Corning Fiberglas Company. In 1959, he was transferred to the Owens Corning Research Center in Granville, Ohio. After his retirement in 1986, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, with GAF Corp., and in 2008 he returned to Anderson.   Mr. Sanders was also an inventor who had several patents in his name. Mr. Sanders was a charter member of Varennes Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors in addition to is his wife, include a daughter Patricia Sanders Barlow and her husband John, of Mount Laurel, NJ, and their daughter, Lauren Kate Barlow; a sister-in-law Marian Sanders, two nieces; Terri Hughes and Barbie Claudsen, all of Anderson.

In addition to his parents, three brothers predeceased him: Roy Sanders, Don Sanders and Charles Sanders.

A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Mr. Sanders will be held Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 1:30 pm in The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel.  A committal service will be held at a later date in New Jersey.

The family will be at the residence, 107 Perpetual Square, Summit Place, and will receive friends at the McDougald Funeral Home from 12:30 to 1:30, and following the service.

PATRICIA TIMMS

OCTOBER 29, 1931 – MAY 30, 2010 

WEST COLUMBIA, SC – Our loving mother, Patricia Milweese Hall Timms, age 78, of West Columbia (formerly of Anderson, SC) peacefully passed away on May 30, 2010.

She was a daughter of the late William Bartlet Hall & Iretta Ivester Hall. She is survived by a son, Larry Newton (Maureen) of Blythewood, SC; and a daughter, Teri Simpson (Ron) of West Columbia, SC; a brother, James Hall, and a sister, Connie Argo, both of Anderson, SC.  She was predeceased by a son, Randy Newton, of Anderson, SC.

Pat, a.k.a “Grandma”, to those close to her, was an inspiration to all as she battled illness after illness with grace and strength. From her we learned where true strength and wisdom come from, which is from above.  Besides spending time with her family, she enjoyed gardening, television & movies, and most of all – shopping.

She will be missed by six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

A special thanks to the Oncology Department of Lexington Medical Center, South Carolina Oncology Associates, and Anderson Oncology & Hematology.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm on Wednesday, June 2, 2010.  The funeral service will follow in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home at 3:00 pm and will be conducted by the Reverend Sam Duncan. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

BUDDY SMITH

DECEMBER 25, 1955 – MAY 30, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – Virgil Harrison Smith, Jr., age 54, of 197 Lakeside Road, passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2010, at his home.

Born in Anderson, SC, on December 25, 1955, he was a son of Frances Williams Smith and the late Virgil Harrison Smith, Sr. He was a graduate of Pendleton High School and was a fourth generation Corn Miller with the family business, Smith Mills, as long as his health permitted.  He was a lifelong member of Welcome Baptist Church and attended West Anderson Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Libby Snipes Smith of the home; sons: Virgil Harrison “Benji” Smith, Patrick Todd Smith, and David Tyler Smith; grandson, Virgil Harrison Smith, IV; his beloved Boston Terrier, “Kia”; and a special caregiver, Gail Hull.  In addition, he is survived by his mother, Frances Smith; his sister, Harriett Smith; and his brother, George Smith, all of Anderson. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at Welcome Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Monday, May 31, 2010.

EDNA MULLIKIN

LAFRANCE, SC – Edna Louise Gentry Mullikin, age 78, wife of the late Conrad “Connie” Mullikin, passed away on Friday, May 28, 2010.

Born in Anderson County on November 28, 1931, she was a daughter of the late John Harrison Gentry and Lois Ellen Craft Gentry.  Mrs. Mullikin retired from LaFrance Industries.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Chapman and husband, Roger, of Pendleton; grandson, Matthew Chapman of Miami, FL; brothers: Preston Gentry and wife, Elaine, of Anderson, William Gentry of Anderson, and Randy Gentry and wife, Linda, of Walhalla; sisters: Bobbie Nimmons and husband, Billy, of LaFrance, Diane Garland and husband, Randall, of LaFrance.  She is also survived by her loving pet, “Smokey”.

She was predeceased by a sister, Frances Smith 

The Funeral Service will held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, May 30, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Roland Bearden, the Reverend C.W. Hicks, and the Reverend Ed Brewer. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens.

FRANCES B. ELROD

ANDERSON – Frances Browning Elrod, 88, of 203 Sumter Street, widow of Shirley B. Elrod, died Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Rainey Hospice House 

Born February 2, 1922 in Toccoa, GA, she was the daughter of the late Duard Andrew and Alma Maye Roberts Browning. She was a homemaker and a seamstress. Mrs. Elrod was President of the Home Demonstration Club during the late 1940s and early 1950s. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and active in many church activities.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley E. White and Teresa E. Hatcher and her husband, Dennis, all of Anderson; ten grandchildren, Ray White, Wayne White, Robbie Elrod, Rita Hammond, Cynthia Ferrell, Eileen Burlette, Vicky Whitten, Michelle Tate, Crystal Templeton, and Tiffany Hatcher; 15 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and two sisters, Bonnie Todd of Anderson and Jane Shaw of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Frank J. Elrod and a son-in-law, Bobby R. White.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, conducted by Rev. Curtis Bundy and Rev. Ray Grant. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home of Shirley E. White, 812 Wilson Street, Anderson.

LARRY CRAWFORD

October 28, 1937 – May 27, 2010                        

ANDERSON, SC - Larry L. Crawford, age 72, of 121 Landau Lane, died Thursday, May 27, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, SC, on October 28, 1937, he was a son of the late Sam Tribble Crawford and Milwee Smith Crawford.  He served in the United States Navy for four years and retired from Owens Corning Fiberglas with 32 years of service.  He was a member of Harvest Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Virginia “Bugs” Bryant Crawford; sister-in-law, Tammi Shaw and husband, Blair Shaw, McKayla Shaw, Tara Standridge and Kim Richey, all whom he loved and cared for dearly.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kimberly Crawford and a son, Tim Crawford. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Dave Neal.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

KATHERINE MURPHY  

January 4, 1921 – May 26, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Katherine Elaine Murphy, age 89, of Anderson, wife of the late Captain Richard Flavin Murphy, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at AnMed Health Medical Center. 

Born in West Chester County, NY, Katherine was a daughter of the late Harry Howard and Mabel Malone Howard.   Following her employment with Chase Manhattan Bank, Katherine served her country by joining the United States Marine Corps in 1952 as a Staff Sergeant. Traveling the world during their retirement years, she and her husband moved to Anderson, SC to make their new home.  While here, they developed many lasting friendships. 

Survivors include her two loving nieces and two wonderful caregivers, Mary Lombardo and Virginia Galloway of Anderson, SC, who made Katherine a special part of their families.

She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Brock.

The burial of her ashes will be held in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA at a later date.

MICHAEL F. CALLIHAN

ANDERSON – Michael Ferguson Callihan, 58, of Auburn, Maine, formerly of Anderson, died Saturday, May 22, 2010 in Lewiston, Maine. 

Born June 6, 1951 in Memphis, TN, he was the son of Wilbur Callihan and the late Thelma Ferguson Callihan. He was a 1969 graduate of Tennessee Military Academy and attended The Citadel. He was an employee of International Paper Company in Jay, Maine for 20 years. 

Survivors include a son, Jonathon Russell Hosea and wife, Susan of Rock Hill; two granddaughters, Annalisa and Ashlyn Hosea of Rock Hill; father, Wilbur Callihan of Anderson; sister, Kay Benton and husband, Donald of Macon, GA; and a brother, Brian Callihan of Anderson. 

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at New Silver Brook Cemetery conducted by Dr. Dennis Tedder. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home of his father, Wilbur Callihan, 107 Mayci Way, Anderson.

ANDERSON, SC - Kenyard Dewayne Sellars, age 60, of 827 Sharonwood Drive, passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2010, at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Gaffney, SC on July 18, 1949, Mr. Sellars was the son of the late Nelson and Mabel Pearl Sellars.  He was a supervisor at Wintenna and was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include his children, Dewayne Sellars and Christi McCoy of Belton and Rodney Evans and Kristin Evans of Anderson; grandson, Kegan Sellars; sister, Carol Cope of Seneca. 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Terri Bookhart.

MACAYLA GRACE SMOAK

ANDERSON, SC – Macayla Grace Smoak, age 9, passed away at her home, 104 Grayson Court, after a long battle with Batten’s Disease.  She was the joyful child of Jeff Smoak and Jennifer Foster Smoak.  Additionally, she is survived by her loving brother, Jacob Smoak; and her grandparents: Brenda & Keith Scott, the late Tony Foster, Harriett Wood, Barbara & Rodney Smoak.

Macayla attended the Multiple Disabilities Class at McLee’s Elementary School and was a member of Electric City Fellowship in Anderson and Edwards Road Baptist Church in Greenville.

A Celebration of the Beautiful Life of Macayla Grace Smoak will be held at Edwards Road Baptist Church, 1050 Edwards Road, Greenville, SC 29615, on Thursday, May 27, 2010, at 3:00 pm.  A Gathering of Friends & Family will be held from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm on Thursday, May 27, 2010, at Edwards Road Baptist Church.  The service will be conducted by the Reverend Gene Ownbey.  Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.  If inclined, please feel free to dress casually.

FRANCES HUETTE ANDREWS  

ANDERSON – Jessie Frances Huette Andrews, 79, of 124 Bradley Park, wife of Edward C. (Andy) Andrews, went home to be with her most gracious and merciful Lord, for whom she had deep, daily love, on Friday, May 21, 2010.

Born in Newport News, VA, she was the daughter of the late J. Francis and Pearl Green Huette. Mrs. Andrews was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church where she was active in her mission group and was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class, the Sanctuary Choir, and the Senior Singers Choir. She was also a member of the Mimosa Garden Club.

Survivors include her husband, Edward C. (Andy) Andrews of the home; daughter, Sheri Andrews Steed and husband, Craig E. Steed of Duluth, GA; son, Edward C. (Chip) Andrews, Jr. and wife, Cherie’ C. Andrews of Dunwoody, GA; granddaughter, Elizabeth Chloe Andrews; grandson, Charles Harrison Andrews, both of Dunwoody, GA; and a sister, Eileen Huette Williams and husband, John D. Williams of Hampton, VA.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Huette Duke and Margaret Huette Nicholls.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Boulevard Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Johnny F. McKinney and Rev. Elwood Orr. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. The family is at the residence.
