JIM MARTIN

FEBRUARY 23, 1930 – NOVEMBER 7, 2010

BELTON, SC – James Alexander “Jim”Martin, age 80, of Drake Road, passed away. 

Born in Detroit, MI, to James Alexander and Cleo Lineberger Martin, he grew up and graduated from high school in Rock Hill, SC, and Clemson College.  He also served in Korea as a First Lieutenant.  He and his wife of fifty-seven years, Barbara Taylor Martin, made their lifelong home in the Anderson area where Jim worked in textile manufacturing and farming. Loving the outdoors, he especially enjoying golfing, fishing, farming, and family gatherings. For over fifty years he enjoyed singing barbershop harmony with the Electric City Harmonizers.  Being a member of the Foothills Writers Guild and an original member of the Anderson Senior Follies allowed him to express his love of music and writing.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: Joseph Gregory Martin and wife, Cheryl of Sumter, James Alexander Martin, III, and wife, Lynne of Anderson, and Timothy Taylor Martin of Belton; a daughter in law, Joy Hong Kim of Atlanta, GA; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and siblings, he was predeceased by a fourth son, Billy Hong Martin.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Mark Hopkins.  Interment will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery.  

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12 noon until 1:30 pm.

SAMUEL C. HUNNICUTT

September 19, 1943 – November 6, 2010

Belton, SC – Samuel “Sammy” Clyde Hunnicutt, age 67, husband of Elaine Deese Hunnicutt, of 335 Blue Ridge Circle, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2010 at AnMed Area Medical Center. 

Born in Anderson, SC to the late Samuel Clyde Hunnicutt and Eunitta Frost Hunnicutt, Samuel was a self-employed mechanic and owner/operator of Sam’s Auto Repair. He attended Bible Deliverance Church.

Mr. Hunnicutt is survived by his wife of the home and a sister, Pat Anne Bowler of Anderson, SC. 

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hunnicutt was predeceased by his daughter, Deanna Dawn Hunnicutt.

The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 8, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Rev. Manley Shaw officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

WILMA WHITAKER  

July 24, 1928 – November 6, 2010 

Anderson, SC- Wilma Trotter Williamson Whitaker, age 82, of 2005 E. Calhoun Street, died Saturday, November 6, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Elizabethton, TN to the late Earl Thomas Trotter and Cassie Josephine Anderson Trotter, Wilma had worked at Riverside Toxaway Mill, Helton’s Cloth Shop and Factory Close-Out. She was a member of Whitefield Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Deborah Hawkins and her husband Michael, of Williamston, SC; a brother, Jerry Lee Trotter, of Anderson, SC; a sister, Earlene Trotter Evans of Anderson, SC; two grandchildren, Jennifer Schronce and her husband Scott and Jonathan Hawkins; one great-granddaughter, Megan Schronce; and her faithful dog, “Charlie B”.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Lamar Williamson; her second husband, William Whitaker; her son, Thomas Lamar Williamson; two brothers, Grady and Clyde Trotter; and a sister, Marie Cummings.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Ron Fousek and Rev. Jimmy Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. 

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

BILL KING

ANDERSON – William Alfred “Bill” King, Jr., passed peacefully at 89 years of age. Born in 1921 to William A. and Eula Jane Strickland King, he was raised in the Triangle Community and was a friend to all. He was the husband of the late Lillie Stringer King. He was a member of Whitefield Baptist Church, a Mason and Woodman. He was predeceased by his brothers, John, James, Joe, and Sloan, and his sisters, Dell Davis, Eva Weir, Louise Glen, Hattie Mitchell, Ruth Banister, and Selma Thomas. He was employed most of his adult life at Blair Mills, Belton.

Having no children, he was affectionately known as “Uncle Bill” by those nephews and nieces who so loved him, and he them. Those who were close, he cherished in a special way; those who were far, he spoke of often and held them in his thoughts and prayers. Most of all, he kept them in his heart.

Bill enjoyed life. He enjoyed conversation. He cherished laughter and fellowship. Bill never met a stranger. He was happy in his large garden, but what brought him the greatest pleasure was sharing what he had with others. During his last few days, he spoke of many friends and loved ones and the kindness that they had shown to him over the years. But that which Bill King will most be remembered for was the kindness that he gave to so many others.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, conducted by Rev. Jimmy Smith. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Friday prior to the service. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will be at the home of a nephew Larry and Dianne Mitchell 206 Cumberland Way, Anderson.

JOHNNY B. PARHAM, JR

JULY 10, 1929 – NOVEMBER 2, 2010 

ANDERSON, SC – Johnny Beauford “J.B.” Parham, Jr., age 81, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

A lifelong resident of Anderson, SC, he was born on July 10, 1929, to the late Johnny Beauford Parham, Sr., and Nora Mae Norton Parham.  He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a graduate of the Carolina School of Commerce.  Mr. Parham retired from BASF after twenty-three years of service and had formerly been employed by Equinox Mill for twenty years.  He was a member of Orrville Baptist Church and the Men’s Baraca Class.  Additionally, he had formerly served on the Usher Committee, served on the Property Committee, and as a Deacon.  

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Evans Parham; his daughter, Debbie Aiken and husband, Steve of Anderson; sister, Doris P. Cantrell of Anderson; a granddaughter, Kerri Senger and husband, Pete and their children: Bentley, Drew, and Macy Senger; and a granddaughter, Julie Allen and husband, Kevin and their children: Mitchell, Jack, and Carter Allen.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers: Gerald, Ralph, Olin, and Paul Parham.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Thursday,  November 4, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Wendell Bannister and Dr. Roger Couch.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. 

The family is at the home and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6pm until 8pm on Wednesday.

IRENE U. PARNELL

September 30, 1935 – November 2, 2010

IVA, SC - Irene Underwood Parnell, age 75, of 500 Suttles Road, died Tuesday, November 02, 2010 at her residence. 

Born in Higham Ferrers, England, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Stanley Underwood and May Beale Underwood.  She retired from Sportswear Unlimited.  She was an active member of Rocky River Baptist Church where she attended the Ruth Sunday School class.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, James “Red” Parnell, Sr., of the home; sons, Jimmy Parnell, Jr., and his wife, Sharon of Craytonville, SC, Paul Parnell and his wife, Kathy of Antreville, SC and Steve Parnell and his wife, Charlene of Level Land, SC; daughter, Patricia Ann Hutchinson and her husband, Kelly of Anderson, SC; siblings, Stephen Underwood; Jean Penness, Gillian Hamilton, Jane Duxbury and a sister-in-law, Pat Underwood all of England; eight grandchildren, Jamie and Heath; Crystal and Amy;  Brian and Kayla; Adrea and Tiffany; nine great-grandchildren and one expected great grandchild.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, John Underwood and a sister, Carol Ann Tuders. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Rocky River Baptist Church officiated by the Reverend Steven Payne and Reverend Larry Cox. 

Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Parnell will be placed in the church at 1:30 pm on Thursday.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends on Wednesday from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home.

PIEDMONT, SC – Patricia Sadako Uchida O’Brien, age 83, of 144 Wren School Road, passed away on Monday, November 1, 2010, at her home.

Born in Osaka, Japan, on December 5, 1926, Mrs. O’Brien was the wife of the late Joseph P. O’Brien and was a homemaker.  She attended the First Baptist Church of Piedmont.

Survivors include her son, George Phillips O’Brien and wife, Susan Ni O’Brien of Piedmont; grandchildren: Shea Phillips O’Brien and wife, Amy O’Brien of Easley, SC, John Kelley O’Brien of Boca Raton, FL, and Erinn O’Brien of Piedmont; great granddaughter, Rebekah Payne of Piedmont; and sister, Reiko Uchida of Osaka, Japan. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at the First Baptist Church of Piedmont, conducted by Dr. Stephen Hearne and Dr. Thomas DeVenny.  Interment will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery, Anderson.

PAUL H. WHITTEN

January 3, 1927 – October 31, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Paul Hobson Whitten, age 83, husband of Emily Cole Whitten, of 314 Amy Street, passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2010 at his residence.

Born in Greenville County, SC on January 3, 1927, Mr. Whitten was a son of the late Thomas Edward Whitten and Carrie Sullivan Whitten.  He was A United States Army World War II veteran and a self-employed paint contractor.  He was a member of Mountain Creek Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of the home; son, Danny Whitten of Belton; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Rodney P. Whitten; brother, Ed Whitten, Jr., and sisters, Irene W. Turner and Frances W. Hedden and half-brother, Haskell Sullivan.

A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 3:30 pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Park officiated by the Reverend Ray Thompson and Reverend Robert Philyaw. 

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

WILLIAM RAY ROWLAND

William Ray Rowland, 82, husband of Willie Mae Rowland, died Sunday, October 31, 2010 at the Anderson Hospice House. A native of Cateechee, he was the son of the late Jim and Willie Rowland. He was of the Baptist faith and was a retired fire fighter for Clemson University. He was a volunteer firefighter at Central Fire Department for 30 years and was a member of the Central Rescue Squad for 25 years. He was an ardent hunter and fisherman.

He was also a really good guy who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

In addition to his wife he is survived by sons Michael Rowland and wife Dana of Liberty and Tim Rowland of Easley, sister Lucille McWhorter and grandchildren Chris Rowland and wife Sherry, Stacy Browder and husband Jonathan, Brandon and Carey Rowland and 5 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 3pm Tuesday in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central with burial to follow in Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday at the funeral home from 1:30-3pm prior to the service. REV. GENE PRICE

ANDERSON – Rev. Cannon Eugene Price, Jr., 82, of 1614 Sandy Hollow, husband of Grace Kelley Price, died Sunday, October 31, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born April 10, 1928 in Greenville, he was the son of the late Cannon Eugene Price, Sr. and Thelma Hallman Price Medley. He was a graduate of Boy’s High School, North Greenville College, Furman University, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and received his Master’s Degree from Western Carolina University. Rev. Price was a retired Southern Baptist Minister and educator. He pastored churches in North Carolina, Kentucky, Maryland, and South Carolina. Locally he served as Pastor at Starr Baptist Church, Princeton Baptist Church, Dorchester Baptist Church, and Asaville Baptist Church. Following retirement, he served several local churches as Interim Pastor. Rev. Price was the founder of Price Driving School, and was an Income Tax Preparer. He was a member of Pope Drive Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Grace K. Price of the home; daughter, Cindi Price Long and husband, Gary of Pendleton; son, Thomas E. “Tommy” Price and wife, Cindy of Anderson. He was “Pop” to his four grandchildren, Bradley L. Hunnicutt of Isle of Palms, Margaret (Meg) Eaves and husband, John of Easley, Roston T. “Ross” Price and fiancée, Ashley Smith of Anderson, and Holly L. Price of Anderson; great grandson, Lawson H. Eaves of Easley; and one sister, Garthedon Embler of Isle of Palms.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Pope Drive Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Mack Tester, Rev. Ray Thompson, and Dr. Glenn Thomason. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home of Tommy and Cindy Price, 201 Hunters Lane, Anderson.

The family would like to offer sincere thanks to Dr. Melody S. Franks and her staff, 4 Center at AnMed Health Medical Center, and the staff of Rainey Hospice House for their excellent care and kindness.

PAT LAFAYETTE DURHAM

FEBRUARY 20, 1926 – OCTOBER 26, 2010 

PIEDMONT, SC – Pat Lafayette Durham, age 84, of 124 Cool Meadows Drive, passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at his home.

Born in the Fants Grove Community of Anderson County, he was a son of the late William Durham and Sophronia Seigler Durham.  He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater and attended Clemson University.  Mr. Durham retired from Hitec Chemicals, Inc. and was a longtime member of Fants Grove Baptist Church. 

Survivors include his son, Danny Durham; grandchildren: Danny Durham, Jr., Andrew Durham, Geneva Shown Rider, and Sandra Barr Cole; great grandchildren: Matthew Barr, Melissa Barr, Jason Rider, and William “Billy” Rider.  Also surviving are three brothers: Frank Durham, Hugh Durham, and Lawrence PeeWee Durham.

He was predeceased by his wife in 2006, Geneva Roper Durham. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Friday, October 29, 2010, at Fants Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family is at the home and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6pm until 8pm on Thursday.
