CAROLINE BOGGS

JULY 14, 1916 – OCTOBER 15, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – Lewra Caroline Boggs, age 94, of 1102 Plantation Road, passed away on Friday, October 15, 2010, at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County on July 14, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Berea Clark Cromer and Annie Lovejoy Cromer.  She was a graduate of Anderson Junior College and retired from the Anderson Independent-Mail as secretary to the Publisher.  Mrs. Boggs was a member of Eureka Baptist Church and the Young at Heart Sunday School Class.

Survivors include her daughters: Brenda Sanders and husband, Richard of Anderson, SC, and Kim Higginbotham and husband, Larry of Chapin, SC; a brother, B.C. Cromer of Charlotte, NC; and four grandchildren: Nathan Sanders, Mark Sanders, Lewra Higginbotham, and Paul Higginbotham.   She is also survived by a very special caregiver, Sally Wyatt.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband in 2006, Edgar Newton “Ed” Boggs; two sisters: Ramah Cromer and Annie Johnston; and two brothers: Paul Cromer and Nevitt Cromer.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, October 18, 2010, at Eureka Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Ron Fousek and Reverend Robert Dickard.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family is at the home of Richard & Brenda Sanders, 111 Boxwood Lane, Anderson, and will receive friends from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm on Monday at Eureka Baptist Church.

CORA GUNNELLS

APRIL 3, 1928 - OCTOBER 16, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – Cora Frances Gunnells, age 82, wife of the late John Alfred “Moto” Gunnells, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Ellenburg Nursing Center.

Born in Pelzer, SC, she was a daughter of the late Harmon Reid Bagwell and Rena Bell Davis Bagwell.  Mrs. Gunnells was a member of Broadmouth Baptist Church, Honea Path, SC.

Survivors included her daughters, Wanda Bannister and her husband Jerry, and Judy Gunnells all of Anderson; two grandchildren, Travis Bannister of Anderson, and Erline Jenkins and her husband Randall and their daughter Tabitha of McDonough, GA; and a sister, Lillie Mae King of Pelzer, SC.

The Funeral Service will be held Monday, October 18, 2010, at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Dr. Wendell Bannister. 

The family will be at the home of Wanda Bannister, 113 Victorian Drive, Anderson; and will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, October 17, 2010 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

TRESSIE BURROUGHS

ANDERSON – Tressie Ellen Arnold Burroughs, 93, of 100 Welborn Oaks Way, widow of Hoyt Lee Burroughs, died Saturday, October 16, 2010 at NHC of Anderson. 

Born January 14, 1917 in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Judge and Angeline Smith Arnold. She was a retired textile employee and a member of West Anderson Church of God.

Survivors include one daughter, Veleria Woodard and husband, Johnny, of Anderson; two sons, Raymond Burroughs and wife, Phyllis, and James R. Burroughs and wife, Barbara, all of Anderson; seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was the last member of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by twelve brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, conducted by her son, Rev. James R. Burroughs, and Rev. John M. Daniel. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4 until 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home, 100 Welborn Oaks Way, Anderson.

FRED STATON

ANDERSON – Fred Staton, 74, of 237 Springside Circle, husband of Wanda Brewer Staton, died Thursday, October 14, 2010 at AnMed Health Medical Center. 

Born December 25, 1935 in Greenville, he was the son of the late William Henry and Beulah Hunt Staton. He was meat supervisor with BiLo for a number of years and established Staton’s Diner in 1985. Mr. Staton was a member of Piedmont Park Baptist Church in Greenville. He was a Mason and a Shriner. 

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Staton of the home; four daughters, Debbie Staton (Samuel Morris) of Anderson, Connie Staton Edwards of Townville, Cheryl Montgomery (Wayne) and Robbie Wilbanks (Tony), all of Anderson; three granddaughters, Maranda, Toni Lee, and Amber; one grandson, Justin; two great grandsons; sister, Betty Spence of Tigerville; and a brother, Henry “Hoss” Staton of Greenville. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great grandson, Jacob Cobb, and a brother, Homer L. Staton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Prospect Baptist Church conducted by Rev. John M. Daniel and Rev. Horace Lanier. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home of Robbie and Tony Wilbanks, 704 Regency Circle, Anderson.

JAMES E. MAULDIN

TOWNVILLE - James Erwin Mauldin died September 20, 2010 at his home in Townville, S.C.  A native of Anderson, S.C. he was born September 30, 1928 to the late Albert Stillwell Mauldin and Daisy Todd Mauldin.  He was also preceded in death by his brother, William Albert Mauldin, Sr. and his sister Laura Louise Mauldin Herron.

Jim was a graduate of the Anderson City School System, Erskine College and Clemson University.  He received his BSCE degree from Clemson in 1951.  After graduation he spent two years in service with the Army Corps of Engineers.  Following his honorable discharge from the Army, he moved to Louisiana and began a lifelong career as a Registered Professional Engineer in overwater oilfield construction.  His career would take him around the world, most notably Kuwait, Lebanon, Singapore, Belgium and Brazil as well as the west coast and gulf coast of the United States.  In 1976, while assigned to the west coast as western division Chief Engineer, he took part in the construction of the tallest offshore oil platform in the world at that time. 

Jim was an avid recreational flyer and held a FAA Commercial pilots license with single engine land and sea, multi-engine land, and glider ratings. He also held a license from the United States Ultralight Association that certified him to fly ultralight type aircraft. While working in the North Sea area and living in Brussels was granted a Belgium Private Pilots License. While living in Singapore, Jim was able to continue flying hobby through membership in the Singapore Flying Club. 

In 1987, Jim retired from the oilfield construction business and moved back to Anderson, SC

to care for his mother suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.  During this time and following the death of his mother, he became an avid gardener.  Following her death he moved to his “farm” in Townville where he was known for his gardening expertise as “Mr. Jim”. 

Jim was a quiet man who cared deeply for his family.  He was a constant in the lives of those who loved him and will be sorely missed.  He is survived by his sister Sallie Florence (Piggie) Mauldin Thompson of Hendersonville, NC; his sister-in-law Rebecca Hollingsworth Mauldin of Eden, NC; nieces Annie Herron Barlow of Lewes, DE, Renee Herron Benson of Emmet, Idaho and Sarah “Sally” Mauldin Schott of Summerfield, NC;  nephews Fred Herron III of Elkton, Maryland, William A. Mauldin, Jr. of Rock Hill, SC, Jeff Thompson, Michael Thompson and Todd Thompson all of Hendersonville, NC; 26 great nieces and nephews; six great-great nieces and nephews; and a host of friends around the world.

A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 17, 2010 at the Mauldin Family Plot in the Old Silver Brook Cemetery in Anderson, SC.  Visitation will be in the church parlor of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Anderson, SC immediately following the service.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Wesleyan Church, 911 Highland Avenue, Hendersonville, NC 28792.

ROSIE CRAWFORD

July 19, 1923 – October 13, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Rosie Bell Crawford, age 87 of 200 Miracle Mile Drive, wife of the late William Thomas Crawford, died Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, SC on July 19, 1923, Mrs. Crawford was the daughter of the late Lila Pelfrey Porter.  She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Joan Dobbins of Iva and Mary Faye Vickery of Anderson; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Virginia Gail Pearson and a great-granddaughter, Jody McClain.

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 15, 2010 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by Pastor E. Howard Steen.  Interment will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery.

EDDIE MCCOY

ANDERSON – Edward “Eddie” Monroe McCoy, 53, of 622 Summit Avenue, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010.

Born Aug. 17, 1957 in Green Cove Springs, FL, he was the son of Ernestine Ivester McCoy and the late Bill McCoy. He was employed at Culp Woven Velvets in Anderson and was a member of Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church.  

Surviving are his companion of 21 years, Gail Russell; mother, Ernestine McCoy; sister, Medina Wilkerson and her husband, Joe and nephew, Ryan Feltman all of Anderson. 

A memorial service will be held at 4pm Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel with Dr. Robert E. Stillwell and Rev. Karen L. Upson officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 N.

The family is at the home of his mother, 126 Londonberry Drive.

FLORENCE R. ASHWORTH

February 13, 1915 – October 10, 2010

Anderson, SC – Florence R. Ashworth, age 95, widow of Joe B. Ashworth, passed away Sunday, October 10, 2010 at Ellenburg Nursing Center.

Born in Royston, GA on February 13, 1915, Mrs. Ashworth was a daughter of the late Armston Robinson and Lois Dove Robinson Burnette. Mrs. Ashworth retired from Orr Lyons Mill with over 50 years of service. She was a Girl Scout and Senior Scout Leader and a founding member of the Orrville Good Neighbor Club. She was a member of Orrville Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Pete Ashworth and his wife Jean, Gary K. Ashworth and his wife Deloris and Greg Ashworth, all of Anderson, SC; two daughters, JoAnn Thomas of Roswell, GA and Dot A. Klatt of Anderson, SC; a brother, Harold Burnette and his wife Libby of Anderson, SC; a sister, Louise Burgess of Anderson, SC; grandchildren, Danny, Karen, Kevin, Melody, Marty, Mark, Craig, Kevin, Patrick, Adam, Derrick, Kenny, Stacey, and Lisa; and numerous great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Ashworth is predeceased by her step-father, H.H. Burnette as well as a son, Donald Ashworth; three sisters, Nellie Jordan, Jessie Mae Evans and Ruby Lee Timmerman; two brothers, Jim and Homer J. Robinson; and one grandson, Tripp Tate, who was recently deceased.

A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 in New Silver Brook Cemetery with Reverend C. W. Hicks officiating.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends on Tuesday prior to the service from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home.

GLADYS H. RICHEY

ANDERSON - Gladys Harrison Richey, 73, of 400 Allenby Road, died Saturday, October 9, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born October 8, 1937 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late John and Daisy Boyles Harrison. She was a life long resident of Anderson and loyal fan of the Clemson Tigers. She retired from BASF and was a member of Concord Baptist Church. At church, she was a member of the choir, Bill King Sunday School Class, Homeless Ministry, Keenagers and the Concord Exercise Class. She was also a member of the Praise Hula Team at Mililani Baptist Church in Hawaii. Gladys enjoyed traveling around the world, on mission trips and just to see God's beauty.  

Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Jim Richey; son, Dale Richey of Anderson; daughter, Donna Cohen and her husband, Steve of the U.S. Navy; 2 grandchildren, Somer Richey and Tyler Mealor and a great granddaughter, Kennedy Richey. 

Funeral service will be held at 11am Tuesday at Concord Baptist Church with Dr. Don Cox and Revs. Bill Parnell and Tom Turner officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the Bill King Sunday School Class and the Concord Exercise Class. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 until 8pm at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 N.

CLYDE WILES

STARR, SC – Clyde Vernon Wiles, age 74, husband of Lillie Howell Wiles, of 1225 Mouchet Circle, passed away Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Willow Creek Living Center in Iva, SC.

Born in Iva, SC on March 21, 1936, Clyde was a son of the late Ernest Wiles and Minnie Elgin Wiles. Clyde worked for many years with the Wellington Mill. Then after retirement, he worked at the Starr Axel Company. He had also worked as a supervisor at the Anderson County Landfill. He was of the Holiness faith.

Survivors include his wife of the home; his son, Reverend Michael Wiles of Easley, SC; his daughter, Brenda Turner and her husband Joe of Starr, SC; two brothers, Hoyt Wiles of Iva, SC and Robert Wiles of Starr, SC; five sisters, Lula Mae Moon, Irene Dickerson and Sara Mauldin, all of Starr, SC, Alice Burdette of Iva, SC and Linda Copeland of Anderson, SC; four grandchildren, Melissa Turner Marcengill, Kevin Turner and his wife Renee, Mark Wiles and Michael Wiles; and four great-grandchildren, Jenna Marcengill, Brensyn Marcengill, Colton Turner and McKenzie Turner.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by three brothers, Ralph Wiles, Jerry Wiles, and Horace Wiles, and two sisters, Mary Faye Wiles and Phyllis Wells.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverends Bobby Smith and Michael Wiles officiating. Interment will follow in Iva City Cemetery.

JOSEPH DANIEL RAMSEY

January 3, 1986 – October 8, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Joseph Daniel “Joey” Ramsey, 24, born in Anderson County, SC on Jan. 3, 1986, of 1200 Blue Heron Trail, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, October 08, 2010, at his home.

He is survived by his mother, Deborah J. Pearson and his step-father, Greg Pearson, of the home and his father, Charles D. Ramsey of Anderson; his four sisters, Kathleen Ramsey, Rebecca Pearson and Kaitlyn Pearson, of the home and Danna Jordan and her husband, Kevin Jordan of Anderson.  Also surviving are grandparents, Carl and Hilda Ginn; Charles A. and Barbara Ramsey, all of Anderson; and Lila Pearson of Williamston.  He is preceded in death by his grandfather, James E. Pearson of Williamston.

He will also be dearly missed by dozens of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins and practically anyone who was lucky enough to have known or met him. Joey attended Anderson School District 5 until the age of 18 when he then attended adult daycare in Anderson and was a former member of Salem Baptist Church.

Throughout his life, even with and maybe because of his disabilities, Joey was able to touch many people with his sweet smile and angelic face.  He was a true blessing to those that knew and loved him.  His presence here on earth will be greatly missed, but we know that in Heaven he will be made whole and his body will be made healthy and he will forever be looking down on us with that beautiful smile.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, October 10, 2010 from 2:30 pm until 3:30 pm, with a Memorial Service to follow at 4:00 pm in the Chapel, conducted by the Reverend Julien Crowe.

Rev. Don Wilson

STARR, SC – The Reverend Don Franklin Wilson, age 78, of 1520 Agnew Road, passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Patterson Springs, NC, on September 30, 1932, he was a son of the late Adkin Andrew Wilson and Annie D. Turner Wilson.  He served as a Radio Operator on the USS York Town while serving in the United States Navy. Reverend Wilson graduated from No. 3 High School in Patterson Springs, NC, received his Associates Degree from North Greenville Junior College, his Bachelors Degree from Gardner-Webb University, and his Masters of Divinity & Doctor of Ministry from the Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY.  He was a retired Baptist Minister having served Ridgewood Baptist Church in Greer, SC, Plum Creek Baptist Church in Vevay, IN, and Long Branch Baptist Church in Anderson, SC.  He served as Interim Minister for the congregations of Mt. Tabor, Flat Rock, Shiloh, and Carswell.  Reverend Wilson was currently an active member of Starr Baptist Church.  While a resident of Miami, FL, he served as the Office Manager for Carolina Freight Carriers, as the Production Planner for Eastern Airlines, and as a Ticket Agent for Eastern Airlines.  He was a former Chaplain and Reserve Officer for the City of Anderson Police Department, where many knew him as “Papa 1”.  In addition to being an avid golfer, Reverend Wilson was a member of the Electric City Lions Club and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Helen S. Vaughn Wilson, of the home; a daughter, Amy Wilson Sexton and husband, Michael R. Sexton; a grandson, Weston Eric Sexton; a granddaughter, Ayrn Denese Sexton; a step-granddaughter, Amanda Sexton Wilson and husband, Josh Wilson; and a great grandson, Haiden Michael Wilson.  

In addition to his parents, Reverend Wilson was predeceased by a brothers: Ned Turner Wilson, Billy Adkin Wilson, and Max Wilson; and sisters: Edith Faye Wilson Dawson, Judy Elaine Wilson Rice, Sara Wilson Goforth.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3pm on Sunday, October 10, 2010, at Long Branch Baptist Church, conducted by the Reverend Hudson White.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. 

The family is at the residence, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 5pm until 7pm on Saturday. Reverend Wilson will be placed into the Church at 2pm on Sunday. 

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to the Janie Chapman State Missions Offering through the Church of your choice, or to Hospice of The Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
