HARRY J. BELLES

August 7, 1919—March 7, 2010
 
Anderson, SC- Mr. Harry John Belles, age 90, of 218 Ashley Road, husband of the late Ruth Williams Belles, died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at AnMed Health Medical Center.
 
Born in Marlboro, MA, he was a son of the late Emilo Belles and Felicia Castalano Belles. He joined the United States Navy on November 1, 1940 and was commissioned in November 1957. Military locations and stations included: Norton Heights, CT; Miami FL; Dearborn MI; Arlington Hall, VA; Great Lakes, IL and Naval Electronics Lab, San Diego, CA. Mr. Belles served on the USS McKean (APD-5), USS Richard Suesens (DE-342), USS Grand Canyon (AD-28), and on the submarine Baya (SS-318). He retired from the Navy on October 31, 1964 with the rank Chief Warrant Officer (CWO2).
He participated in the Guadalcanal Campaign, Leyte Operation and Okinawa Gunto operations.
Memorable experiences; August 7, 1942, with the invasion of Guadalcanal, on his birthday; the several frightening experiences with the kamikazes off Okinawa and the remnants of the Battle of Midway.
Mr. Belles was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation with the Bronze star, Philippine Liberation with two stars, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four stars, American Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
His civilian employment was with Control Data Corp., for 20 years, as an engineer and salesman, where he retired in September of 1988. Harry enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing, his horse, “Masterful Advocate”, ran in the 1987 Kentucky Derby. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
 
Survivors include his daughter, Sandra L. Manzi of Anderson; three grandchildren, Duane Brinson of Key West, FL, Tiffini and Shale Whittingham of Corona, CA, Sunny Distin of Greenbrier, AR; four great-grandchildren, Ryen and Tanner Whittingham and Lacey and Blake Distin; sister, Florence Finlay of Bradenton, FL.
 
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his son, Everett “Sonny” Belles; brother, Raymond Belles; two sisters, Lucille Ebert and Nancy Christopher.
 
The Funeral Mass will be held at 11am on Friday, March 12, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church officiated by Father Hayden J. Vaverek. Inurnment of his ashes will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
 
The family will be at the residence and will receive friends on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6pm-7pm. A Prayer Vigil will begin at 7pm.

NANCY STAMPS

June 8, 1934 – March 8, 2010
 
ANDERSON, SC - Nancy “Nana” C. Heath Stamps, age 75, wife of Haskell Stamps of 8 Anchor Point, passed away on Monday, March 8, 2010 at the AnMed Health Medical Center.
 
Born in Penrose, NC on June 8, 1934, Mrs. Stamps was a daughter of Lovella Merrill Heath of Penrose, NC and the late James Herbert “Hub” Heath.  She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and a member of the Ladies of the Moose.
 
Survivors include her husband, of the home and mother of Penrose, NC; daughters, Diann Patterson and her husband, Joey and Gail Anderson and her daughter, Danielle, all of Anderson, SC; stepchildren; Sam Stamps and his wife, Cindy of Greenville, SC, Tony Stamps and his wife, Barbara of Jacksonville, FL and Sharon Senn and her husband, Foster, of Newberry, SC; siblings; Frances Clark and her husband, Garfield and James Heath and his wife, Jo, all of Penrose, NC.  Eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous “adopted” children also survive.
 
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Heath and son-in-law, Rev. Ray Anderson, Jr.
 
The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 12:30 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Phillip Stout and Reverend Joyce Murphy.  Entombment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11:00 am until Noon.
 
The family will be at the home of Diann Patterson, 210 Holly Ridge Drive, Anderson.

WADE F. DANSBY

SEPTEMBER 24, 1910 – MARCH 6, 2010

CLINTON, SC – Wade Ferguson Dansby, age 99, resident of the Presbyterian Home, passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2010.

Born in Rockmart, GA, on September 24, 1910, he was the son of the late George Dansby and Grace Elliott Dansby.  He was a retired sales manager and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Anderson.

Survivors include his wife of seventy-five years, Mildred Taylor Dansby; a daughter, Joy D. Aldret of Anderson, SC; a son, Wade F. Dansby and wife, Surada of Chapel Hill, NC; sister, Joy D. Watkins and husband, Homer; grandchildren: John Aldret, Jr., and wife, Janice; Angie A. Bruhjell and husband, Gary; Wade Dansby, III; Taylor Dansby and wife, Gina; and William Dansby; great grandchildren: Erik Bruhjell & Isla Grace Dansby.

He was predeceased by his parents and son-in-law, John Aldret.

A Private Family Committal Service will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Dr. Dennis R. Tedder will conduct the service.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 302 West Whitner Street, Anderson, SC 29624, or to the Presbyterian Home of Clinton, 801 Musgrove Street, Clinton, SC 29325.

Ben Timmerman

August 23, 1940 – March 5, 2010

Anderson, SC -  Bennie Frank Timmerman, age 69, of 2510 Annandale Drive, husband of Peggy Getsinger Timmerman, passed away March 5, 2010, at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, SC, he was the son of the late Waymon William Timmerman and Ruby Lee Robinson Timmerman. After graduating from Boys High in 1958, he attended Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton, NC receiving a degree in Industrial Engineering.  Mr. Timmerman moved to Valdese, NC in 1967 where he worked and retired from Hickory Hill Furniture Company. After his retirement in 2006 he moved back to Anderson Area. He attended New Springs Church.

Survivors include his wife of the home, son, Brian Timmerman and his wife Terrie, of Morganton, NC, daughter, Donna Wilson and her husband Craig, of Ringold, GA. three grandchildren: Christopher Timmerman, Nathaniel Timmerman and Jacob Wilson, four sisters, Sarah Drake of Simpsonville, Jean McConnell of Seneca, Frances Thackston of Greenville, and Faye Cantrell of Anderson.

In Celebration of his life, a Memorial will be held Monday, March 8, 2010 at 2:30 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel.Officated by the Reverends Cecil Campbell and Mike Cothran.  The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.

THE REVEREND MARVIN J. EDMONDS

APRIL 16, 1919 - MARCH 5, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – The Reverend Marvin James Edmonds, age 90, of 3501 Catawba Avenue, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 5, 2010.

Born in Rabun County, GA, on April 16, 1919, he was a son of the late Alex Patrick Edmonds and Texanna Taylor Edmonds.  He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II having served in Europe as well as three major battles under General Patton.  Reverend Edmonds was the Pastor of Old Hepsibah Baptist Church from 1952 until his health would not allow him to pastor in the Church anymore.  Because of his deep love of Christ, he was also able to minister to many through his radio broadcast ministries in Seneca & Anderson as well as his many Nursing Home ministries. 

Survivors include his children: Tony Marvin Edmonds and wife, Ruth of Anderson; Jan Simpson and husband, Jimmy of Pendleton, and Judy Price of Seneca; his grandchildren: Greg Edmonds & Barry Edmonds; Brad Simpson, Stacy Simpson, & Chad Simpson; Robert Price, Shelley Brown, & Leah Price.  Fourteen great grandchildren also survive him.

He was twice married: first to the late Grace Cromer Edmonds; and secondly to the late Myrtle McCall Alexander Edmonds.  As the only surviving member of his immediate family he was preceded in death by his brothers & sisters: Marcus Edmonds, Johnny Edmonds, Dean Edmonds, Ira Edmonds, Jacky Edmonds, Winola Cater, Rachel Edmonds, and Martha Edmonds.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3 pm on Monday, March 8, 2010, at Old Hepsibah Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Carl McGaha, the Reverend Delbert McCall, the Reverend Scott Owens, and the Reverend Robert Price. Interment, with Military Honors provided by Fort Gordon, will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park conducted by the Reverend Brian M. Goss.

The family is at the home of Tony & Ruth Edmonds, 604 Fairmont Road, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6pm until 8pm on Sunday, March 7, 2010.  Reverend Edmonds will be placed into the Church at 2pm on Monday.

EDNA TRIBBLE WRIGHT

ANDERSON – Edna Tribble Wright, 83, of 306 Rhodehaven Drive, widow of Oswald C. “Bud” Wright, died Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born December 10, 1926 in Oconee County, she was the daughter of the late Mitt and Ruth Sullivan Tribble. She was a homemaker and a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Dianne W. Whitten and Susan K. Wright, both of Anderson; two grandsons, Mark D. Whitten and Chad W. Whitten, both of Anderson; two brothers, Glenn Tribble of Pendleton and Jack Tribble of Townville; one sister, Nancy Tribble Ledford of Townville; nieces, Becky Rogers, Glynette Williams, and Lynette Toney; and nephews, Ricky Tribble, John Tribble, and Andy Tribble.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, David J. Tribble, and nephews, Lamar and Randy Ledford.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at New Prospect Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Tony Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Monday at the church. The family is at the residence.

OSCAR SAM (SAMMY) CROKER

ANDERSON, SC -- On March 5th, at AnMed Health Medical Center,  Sam Croker, age 78, was “absent from the body, present with the Lord.”

Sam was born in Atlanta, GA, in 1931 the son of Samuel Wesley Croker and Ezma Pace Croker. Sam attended Hiram High School and the Southern College of Pharmacy.  He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.  Following the war he worked for Dunaway Drugs in Marietta, GA, as a Pharmacist.  In 1960, he moved his family to Anderson, SC, where he was a salesman for Eli Lilly Drugs.  He went into a partnership with Ed Ozmint at Medi-Care Drugs and worked there as a Pharmacist until his retirement.

Sam’s sport was golf and sometimes he was on the course every day.  In his lifetime he had four holes in one. Another hobby he pursued when he was younger was motorcycle dirt biking.

Sam was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, basketball coach, head of security, and coordinator for Senior Citizen activities.  He was on the Committee to start Oakwood Christian School and served as a member of the board of trustees.

Predeceasing Mr. Croker were his parents; his sister, Kathryn Rakestraw; and twin sons: James and Perry.

His survivors include his wife, Joanna; and children: Cherry Kent (Matt), Melissa Lyon (Jed) and Samuel Croker (Joye). Sam’s fourteen grandchildren: Gretchen Skelton (Chad), Christy Steiger, Jonathon Lyon, Jeremy Lyon (Tiffany), Benjamin Lyon (Jen), Zachary Lyon, Sterling Lyon, Elliott Lyon, Geoffrey Lyon, Sydney Lyon, Jedman Lyon and Joe Lyon, Sophia and Amelia Croker. Greatgrands are: Grayson, Hayden and Aubrey Lyon; Cole, Owen, and Josie Skelton.

The Funeral Service will be at Oakwood Baptist Church on Sunday, March 7th at 2:30 pm.  Reverend Guy Roberts and Reverend Jeff Bartlett will officiate. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

BETTY DURHAM

BELTON – Betty Lou Morgan Durham, 76, of Belton, wife of Thomas A. Durham, died Friday, March 5, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born November 7, 1933 in Walhalla, she was the daughter of the late Bruce M. and Minnie Spurlock Morgan. Mrs. Durham retired from BASF. She was an avid doll collector and was a member of Ann Hope United Methodist Church in Seneca.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas, of the home; son, Thomas Lee Durham of Belton; and daughter, Genia Berndt and husband, David of Anderson. She was the youngest of seven children, preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Oconee Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Seneca, conducted by Rev. Gerald Cleveland. Burial will follow in Oconee Memorial Park.

GRACE Y. SIMPSON

NOVEMBER 10, 1929 – MARCH 3, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – Grace Yvonne “Butch” Simpson, age 80, formerly of 303 Lewis Street, passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Ellenburg Nursing Home.

Born in Anderson, SC, on November 10, 1929, she was a daughter of the late George William Whitfield and Eunice Crawford Whitfield.  She retired from Ellenburg Nursing Home and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children: daughter, Peggy Louise Byrum of Anderson, SC; son, Brad Simpson, MD and wife, Angela of Easley, SC; sister, Elizabeth Stone of Anderson, SC; five grandchildren: Renea Mulkey and husband, Chuck, Amy Eskew and husband, Phillip, Nicole Simpson, Brad Simpson, Jr., and C.A. Simpson; and five great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Dalton Simpson; a son, Charles Dalton Simpson; and a brother, Charles Whitfield.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Pleasant View Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Dr. Glenn Taylor.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

WILLIAM TODD PLAXCO

June 16, 1925 – March 3, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - William Todd “Jack” Plaxco, age 84, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010.

Born in Due West, SC, he was the second son of Dr. James McElwee Plaxco and Adele Todd Plaxco.  He volunteered to serve in the United States Navy at age 17, attended Erskine College and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Jack began working for IBM on his 25th birthday and retired in management.  Over the years, he was active in the A.R.P. Presbyterian and Methodist Churches.  He was a member of the Elks and Golden Kiwanis Clubs and served with United Way and Meals on Wheels.  Mr. Plaxco loved the outdoors.  Among his many activities, he enjoyed fishing and flying planes, boating, snow skiing, jogging, tennis and golfing.  Gardening was a passion for Jack.  He was a tester for Jackson & Perkins roses and once held the state record for the largest tomato, grown at over three pounds.  He was the instrumental driving force behind Polecat Farms of Anderson. 

Jack was devoted to his church and often volunteered to help the less fortunate.  He spent several weeks in Awendaw after Hurricane Hugo.  He was devoted to his family and never met anyone he didn’t consider a friend.  He will be missed by all

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Myers Plaxco; children, John Todd and wife, Barbara, William Myers and partner, Miss Kelly Yane, and ElizaBeth; grandchildren; Christopher, Adam and Meredith.

Predeceasing Mr. Plaxco were his parents and first wife, Lois Marie Long and three brothers; Dr. James McElwee Plaxco, Jr., Dr. Charles Cowen Plaxco and John Todd Plaxco.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at St. John’s United Methodist Church conducted by the Reverend Dr. William R. Childs and the Reverend Fran Elrod.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

A Committal Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Monday, March 8, 2010 at Greenlawn Memorial Park, located in Columbia, SC.

KENNETH R. WEBBER

ANDERSON – Kenneth Robert Webber, 68, of 1220 Oak Hill Drive, husband of Frances English Webber, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at his residence.

Born April 10, 1941 in Anderson, he was the son of Thelma Gibbons Webber and the late John Frank Webber, Sr. He was a retired Construction Manager with Duke Power for 25 years and a member of Hope Fellowship Church. 

Surviving are his wife, Frances E. Webber of the home; 3 daughters, Carlie Webber of Clinton, Wanda Cox of Anderson and Crystal Oglesby of Charlotte, NC; mother, Thelma G. Webber of Anderson; 4 grandchildren, Jeremy, Heather, Philip and Kenny; great grandson, William; sister, Bonnie S. Nowell and brother, John F. Webber, Jr. both of Anderson. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Philip Joseph Webber and Bennie Michael Webber.  The family wishes to thank Mr. John “Johnny” Kenneth Webber for all he has done in our time of need. 

Funeral service will be held Saturday at 3pm at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel with Pastor Mark Gasque officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3pm prior to the service at the Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 N. The family is at the residence.

EUNICE G. MITCHELL

JUNE 8, 1913 – MARCH 3, 2010

WILLIAMSTON, SC – Eunice Priscilla Gaillard Mitchell, age 96, formerly of 321 Mitchell Road, and wife of the late John Vivian Mitchell, passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Countryside Village in Easley, SC.

Born in Anderson County on June 8, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Hampton H. Gaillard and Lula Smith Gaillard. She retired from the textiles industry and was a member of Whitefield Baptist Church.

Survivors include a stepson, Eugene Vivian Mitchell of Anderson, SC; a niece, Ann Cooley Deaton of Easley, SC; and six nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by sisters: Edith Cooley &  Ruth Kelly; and brothers: Norman & Harold Gaillard.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3pm on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Whitefield Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Dr. Ron Fousek, the Reverend Jimmy Smith, the Reverend David Kelly.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery conducted by the Reverend Dr. Charles Strickland.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Church on Sunday.
