ROBERT J. SIMPSON

MARCH 29, 1923 – APRIL 2, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – Robert J. Simpson, age 87, of 4205 Old Williamston Road and husband of late Frances D. Simpson, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born on March 29, 1923, in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Waymond Simpson and Ada Fisher Simpson.  He served in the United States Army during World War II and retired from Duke Power.  Mr. Simpson was a member of Whitefield Baptist Church and was a member of the Hoyt Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his children: Steven Simpson of Laurens, Timothy Simpson of Anderson, Vickie Phillips of Pelzer, Laura Daws of Hartwell, Ledina Roberts of Pelzer; brother, Willis Trilby Michael of Anderson; sisters: Lucy Wall of Charleston, and Annie Laurie Clardy of Williamston; eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by siblings: Hubert Simpson, Woodrow Simpson, S.T. Simpson, Samuel Simpson, Watkins Simpson, Rachel Michael, Ruby McCoy Johnson, Mary Beckwith, and Inez Wood.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 5, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home.

The family is at the home and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Sunday, April 4, 2010.

MAHALIE KING BROWN

ANDERSON, SC -- Mahalie King Brown of Anderson, age 93, died Wednesday, March 31, 2010.

Mrs. Brown was born May 29, 1916, and called Anderson home her entire life. She was the daughter of the late Robert Rutledge King and Ellie Howard Hudson King. She graduated from Anderson Girl’s High School and attended Converse College. She married David Carroll Brown on June 29, 1939, and lived at 224 Moultrie Square over 60 years.

Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband of 70 years, as well as three children, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. David Carroll Brown, Jr. lives in Los Angeles, California with his wife, Deborah Brownell Brown. They have two children, Lindsay Copeland Brown and David Hudson Brown. Mahalie Brown Davies and her husband, William Stuart Davies, reside in Columbia, South Carolina and have three children, Sterling Graydon Davies, Robert Rutledge Davies and Mahalie Davies Moore. Thomas Clinkscales Brown and his wife, Lynn Pruitt Brown reside in Greenville, South Carolina and also have three children, Emily Hudson Brown, David Webb Brown and Catherine Ann Brown. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Rutledge King, Jr., of Avon Park, Florida.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Woodward King; and her sister, Betty King Trowbridge.

Mrs. Brown was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a remarkable homemaker and a devoted Christian in all her actions. Mrs. Brown was a volunteer for the AnMed Health Auxiliary for 45 years, and in 2006 was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership for her service at the hospital. She was an active lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, a Life Member of the Anderson Woman’s Club, and a member of the Anderson Junior Assembly (now the Junior League). She also enjoyed participating in many other women’s organizations including Club 24.

A Graveside Service will be held at Old Silver Brook Cemetery at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 3, 2010.  The family will greet friends following the service.

ROB CATHEY

ANDERSON – Robert Claude Cathey, II, husband of Sara Samosky Cathey, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, passed away on March 28, 2010.

Rob was born June 17, 1968 in Anderson, SC, son of Robert C. and Leila Elrod Cathey. He graduated from Lander College with a degree in Business and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He was a devoted son, brother, husband and father. He was an avid sportsman and bow hunter. Rob was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church, Mt. Pleasant.

Survivors include his wife, Sara S. Cathey, M.D. of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Huntington, WV; his parents, Bob and Leila Cathey of Anderson; two daughters, Claire and Mae Cathey; two sisters, Lori Truhn and Mandy Anderson; one brother, Daniel Cathey; maternal grandparents, Ansel and Ruth Elrod and beloved nieces and nephews, Rivers and Brooklyn Cathey; McKinley and Reece Anderson. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Reece and Ruby Cathey.

A memorial service to celebrate Rob’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Hopewell Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Ken Keaton and Rev. Delano McMinn.

Memorials may be made in Rob’s memory to All Saints Lutheran Church, Youth Development Fund, 2107 Hwy 17 North, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.

AZALEE VAUGHN DILLMAN

April 18, 1919 – March 28, 2010

LEESBURG, FL - Azalee Powell Vaughn Dillman, age 90, wife of Charles Gereald Dillman of 431 Palo Verde Drive, Leesburg, FL, passed away on Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Leesburg Regional Medical Center.

Born in Level Land Community in Anderson County, SC, she was the daughter of the late James Edward Powell and Lois Elizabeth McCurry Powell.  Mrs. Dillman was a graduate of Girls’ High School and retired from Haynesworth Mill.  She was a member of Orrville Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of the home; son, Gus Vaughn and his wife, Jean and daughter, Margaret V. Burnette and her husband, Gary, all of Anderson; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, William Marion Vaughn and her brother, Fred Powell.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Dr. Wendell Bannister.  Interment will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.

DELL JOHNSON

DECEMBER 15, 1932 – MARCH 28, 2010

BELTON, SC – Mr. Maudell “Dell” Johnson, age 77, of 419 Pea Creek Road, passed away at his home on Sunday, March 28, 2010.

Born in Statesboro, GA, on December 15, 1932, he was a son of the late Douglas Johnson and Maudie Ellis Johnson.  He served as a paratrooper in the 187th division of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was a recipient of two Purple Heart medals.  Mr. Johnson was the owner of Harris Appliance Parts Company in Anderson, SC, & Greenville, SC. He was a member of Blue Ridge Baptist Church in Belton and was a faithful supporter of the Gideon’s International – namely the Belton Camp.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-seven years, Nelwyn Harris Johnson; children: Diane Johnson Brock and husband, Lester L. Brock of Anderson, SC, Stephen D. Johnson and wife, Susan Johnson of Statesville, NC, and Denise J. Wilson and husband, Melvin Wilson of Anderson, SC; sister, Irene Davis of Greenwood, SC; brother, Hubert Johnson of North Augusta, SC; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Crawford Johnson.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Richard Busha.  Interment with Military Honors provided by Fort Gordon will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family is at the home, 419 Pea Creek Road, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 30, 2010.

PAULINE T. SANDERS

JANUARY 8, 1931 – MARCH 28, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – Pauline “Polly” Tench Sanders, age 79, wife of the late Charles Sanders, Jr., passed away at her home on Sunday, March 28, 2010.

Born in Demorest, GA, on January 8, 1931, she was a daughter of the late I.D. Tench and Pauline Amanda Gunn Tench.  She was the owner of AAA Bookkeeping & Tax Service on Mauldin Street and was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church.  Mrs. Sanders was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her children: Dennis Lawrence Roberts and wife, Sally of Mamaroneck, NY, Dean Markham Roberts and wife, Sherry of Anderson, SC, Wanda Carol Lewis and husband, Wayne of Anderson, SC, and Tara Lee Payne and husband, Elton of Iva, SC; brother, Paul Tench of Anderson, SC; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Dr. Johnny F. McKinney.  Interment will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery.

DOUGLAS J. TILLEY

Anderson, SC - Douglas J. Tilley, age 84, of 204 Juniper Avenue, Anderson, SC, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 28, 2010.

Born November 19, 1925, Douglas was a son of the late Leroy Tilley and Mary Timms Tilley. He served his country in combat in the Army during WWII and was wounded while in the European Theater. He retired as a police officer for the City of Anderson. Being injured in the line of duty, he became a radio dispatcher for the County of Anderson. He was one of the first K-9 police officers and the first recipient of the Policeman of the Year Award. He was a member of Caanan Baptist Church, a lifetime member of the DAV and a fifty-eight year member of the Hiram Masonic Lodge #68.  Douglas is to be remembered for his love of God, country and family.

Survivors include two daughters, Callie Tilley and Patricia Tilley, both of Anderson, SC; a brother, Joe B. Tilley of Anderson, SC and a sister, Ruth Tilley Brown of Falls Church, VA; and three grandsons, Joshua Caine Chasteen, Jason Toby Chasteen and Corey Miles Tilley. He will truly be missed by his faithful Labrador, Maggie.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Tilley was predeceased by his wife, Edna Virginia Stewart Tilley; a daughter, Nancy Tilley Chasteen; a brother, Leon Tilley; and a sister, Katherine Tilley Hanna.

The Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 12:30 p.m. at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jerry Parnell and Reverend Steve Silvey officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Military Honors.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home prior to the service on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. until Noon. 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for a simple act of kindness be shown toward a fellow man, such as planting a Dogwood tree for all to enjoy.

Dewey Herman Pearson, Jr

ANDERSON -- Dewey Herman Pearson, Jr., 76, ended a battle with cancer peacefully in his home March 27, 2010. He was born in Orangeburg, SC to the late Raiford Williamson Pearson and Dewey Herman Pearson Sr.

He is survived by his wife Betty Fowler Pearson, of Anderson; son John Dewey Pearson and his wife Dana, of Roswell, GA; son J. Michael Pearson MD and his wife Pamela, of Lake Oswego, OR; and six grandchildren.

Dewey was faithful to God and country and was a dedicated member and elder of Roberts Presbyterian Church. Dewey was a Professional Engineer who attended Clemson University. He earned a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of SC, and a BS in Meteorology from Penn State University. He then served in the US Air Force with a tour of duty in Japan.

His career included 13 years as a meteorologist with American Airlines, positions with SC DHEC in Greenville and Columbia, and Environmental Services Division Director for Anderson County. After retirement, he continued as an engineering consultant for AndersonCounty, and spearheaded their 20-year sewer plan.

The family will receive friends Monday, March 29, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Sullivan-King Mortuary's Northeast Chapel. The funeral will be Tuesday, March 30 at 3 p.m. at Roberts Presbyterian Church where he will be laid to rest.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice of the Upstate or Anderson Interfaith Ministries.

AUDREY PEPPER

December 1, 1920 – March 27, 2010

Anderson, SC - Audrey Inez Edgar Pepper, age 89, widow of the late Dr. Paul Madison Pepper, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born and raised in Townville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Robert Clyde Edgar and Drucie Robertson Edgar. Mrs. Pepper was a homemaker and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Edward Pepper of Katy, TX; four daughters, Elaine Simpson of Iva, SC, Evelyn Miller of Greenville, SC, Beverly Pepper of Tampa, FL and Paula Ayers of Anderson, SC; one brother, Robert “Bob” Edgar of Anderson, SC; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a grandson, James Howard Simpson, Jr.

The Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel with Reverends Dale Bradley and Jason Vaughn officiating. Entombment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will be at Mrs. Pepper’s home, 1802 Old Williamston Road, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, March 29, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

March 31, 1942 – March 26, 2010

IVA, SC - Douglas MacArthur Todd, age 67, of 145 Mike McConnell Avenue, husband of Shelby Bannister Todd, passed away Friday, March 26, 2010 in Sevierville, TN.

Born in Iva, SC on March 31, 1942, Mr. Todd was a son of the late Wilson Todd and Ola McKee Todd. He was a 1961 Crescent High School graduate. He worked for 13 years at Jackson Mill and retired from tree service after 35 years with Davey Tree Service, now Asplundh. He was an honorary lifetime member of the Crescent FFA and a member of The Crescent Young Farmers. He was a lifetime member of Hebron United Methodist Church where he was a layleader and a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Beth Brooks and her husband Bud, Janie Fairchild and her husband Charles, and Wanda Fairchild and her husband Keith, all of Iva; one brother, Marshall Todd of Iva, and one sister, Sadie Newby, of Iva; and six grandchildren, Andrew, Kayla, Jessie, Rachel, Gary and Seth.

The Funeral Service will be held Monday, March 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by Dr. Ralph T. Bowling Jr. and Rev. Jeff Roper. Interment will follow in Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery.

CLAUDE WOOTEN

BELTON – Claude Wooten, 82, of 13000 Highway 20, died Friday, March 26, 2010 at his residence.

Born June 17, 1927 in Missouri Branch, WV, he was the daughter of the late Albert and Peggy Jude Wooten. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves and was a graduate of Moody Bible Institute. He was a retired businessman and pastor, and was a member of Neals Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Celestia V. Wooten of the home; daughter, Peggy Lee Cline and husband, Lacy of Belton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a number of brothers and sisters, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, conducted by Rev. Alex Henderson. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Greenville. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Monday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence.

Tony Michael Trotter  

November 19, 1952 – March 21, 2010

ANDERSON, SC - Tony Michael Trotter, age 57, of 1025 Trotter Road, died Sunday, March 21, 2010, at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, SC, on November 19, 1952, he was a son of the late Grady Thomas Trotter and Hester Harper Trotter. He graduated from Crescent High School in 1971 and worked for Glen Raven Mills as an electrician for over 39 years.  Mr. Trotter was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughter Rana Trotter Masters and her husband Troy; son, Zack Trotter; brother, Gerald Trotter and sisters, Elaine McGuire, Lynn Roper, and Mary Ellis all of Anderson.

A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at Flat Rock Cemetery conducted by the Reverend Ed Hunsinger. The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm before the service on Wednesday, at The McDougald Funeral Home.
