SUE R. MURRAY

April 1, 1924 – April 21, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Sue Robbins Murray, age 89, of Anderson Place, passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at her residence.

Born in Chester, SC, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Hargrave Robbins and the late Annie Draper Crowe Robbins.  Upon her graduation from Converse College Sue became a homemaker, teacher and writer. Sue was Past President of the Anderson County Medical Auxilliary and was a member of the Writer’s Guild of Anderson.  She was a Past President and honorary member of Our Garden Club of Anderson.  Sue was a member of Revelers Club as well as The Thursday Club. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Anderson. 

She is survived by her children, Harold L. “Hal” Murray, Jr. and his wife Margarita of Raleigh, NC, and Lynn Murray of Anderson, SC; a brother, Hawk Robbins, Jr. of Chester, SC; and three grandchildren, Jonathan Taylor, Kelly Taylor and Harrison Murray. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Harold L. Murray; a son, John Paul Murray; five brothers and one sister. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Bob Marcaurelle officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff at Anderson Place for their outstanding care.

JAMES “JIM” PATRICK ROBERTS

June 5, 1940 – April 22, 201

STARR, SC - James Patrick Roberts, age 72, of Starr, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Habersham County, GA, he was the son of the late Otis and Esta Philyaw Roberts.  Jim moved to Anderson in 1945, where he lived for most of his life. Following high school, Jim was a barber with Donnie Cooley, Belton, SC, the co-owner of Concord Barber Shop in Anderson, worked with Ray Walker Trucking Company and Ionosphere Travel Agency.  He served in the United States Navy and Army.  His love for traveling carried him all over the United States and internationally touring many foreign countries.  Jim was a member of Truth Tabernacle Baptist, Starr, SC and a former member of over 30 years at Hopewell Baptist Church.  He was a mason.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Smith Roberts; son, James Rick Roberts and wife Nicole; step-daughters, Darlene S. Medlock and her husband Dr. DuBose Medlock, Melanie S. Hudders; grandchildren, Jake Roberts, Jet Trull, Heather Smith, Evan and Ryan Hudders, Mayme Medlock; one great-grandchild, Hannah Osborne; a sister-in-law, Jean Freeman and her husband Carey; a brother-in-law, Tommy Smith; and a special uncle Varon Philyaw and his wife Joyce.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Hudson White officiating.  Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the home of Jean and Carey Freeman, 315 Chaffin Road, Iva, SC, 29655 and will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

GUY MARTIN

ANDERSON - Guy Vernon Martin, 82, husband of Rosa M. Martin, passed away Monday, April 22, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born September 29, 1930 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Thurston and Bertha Campbell Martin. Guy was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was the owner of Southeastern Electric and member of Hopewell Baptist Church. 

Guy is survived by his wife, Rosa Moore Martin; his loving children; grandchildren; brother, Fred Martin and extended family. He was preceded in death by is brothers, Eugene and Ralph Martin and sisters, Vivian Richardson, Helen Ponder, Mary Martin and Hazel Boleman.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 3pm at Sullivan-King Mortuary with Rev. Ray Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3pm Wednesday prior to the service at the Mortuary, 3205 Hwy 81 N. The family is at the respective homes.

DOROTHY THOMPSON YATES

ANDERSON, SC - Dorothy Thompson Yates, age 90, of 808 Yates Circle, passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Lawrence Thompson and the late Lillian Nimmons Thompson, being the last surviving member of her immediate family.  She was an employee at Equinox Mill for over 40 years.  She retired from Ryan’s as a Hostess after 11 years of service, where she was known affectionately as “Miss Dorothy”.  She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.  Dorothy was also a very active member of the Keenagers of Concord Baptist Church. 

She is survived by her children, T. Randy Yates, Brenda McKee and her husband, Dennis, Freda Burdette and her husband Steve; eight grandchildren who she deeply loved and who lovingly called her “Granny Yates”, Brian McKee, Jeffery (Rayetta) McKee, Joel (Krystal) McKee, Hal McKee, Steven (Jade) Burdette, Crystal (William) Crawford, Angela (Donnie) Pardue and April McGuffin; 11 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Frances A. Thompson; and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Thamer Calhoun Yates; two brothers, Denver and Dalton Thompson; and a sister, Dixie Powell.

The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 12:30 PM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverends Dale Bradley and Bill Parnell officiating.  Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.  The Keenagers of Concord Baptist Church will serve as Honorary Escort. 

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, April 23, 2013.

BETTY RUTH BAY

November 12, 1939 – APRIL 22, 2013 

ANDERSON, SC - Betty Ruth Bay, age 73, of 20 Chase Avenue, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2013 at her residence.

Born in Sherwood, TN, she was the daughter of the late Henry Guess and Lillie Mae Garner Guess Ritchie.  She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith.

She is survived by her husband, William Arthur Bay, of the home; a stepfather, Raymond Ritchie of Chattanooga, TN; daughters, Carolyn Langen of Anderson, SC, Genevea Bell of Pelzer, SC, Kimberly McSkimming of Ashtabula, OH, and Christine Chaplin of Byesville, OH; a brother, Will Guess of Rossville, GA; a sister-in-law, Diana Roxbury of Elwood, PA; a brother-in-law, James Bay of Cambridge, OH; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Guess and a sister, Sue Hunkapillar.

The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Lawrence Houston Bradford officiating.  Interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens.

LOIS COTHRAN

December 24, 1935 – April 20, 2013

Mrs. Lois Anne Graydon Cothran, 77, of Anderson, passed away at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law on Saturday, April 20, 2013, surrounded by the love of her family.  Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of the late Starling “Murray” Graydon, Sr. and the late Edna Smith Graydon.  She was the loving and devoted wife of Gene A. Cothran of the residence.

Mrs. Cothran was a graduate of Gray Court Owens High School.  She retired from department store sales, having worked at Meyers Arnold, Uptons, and finally Gallent-Belk.  Lois was a member of Covenant Baptist Church, and a former member of Boulevard Baptist.  She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, was an avid bridge club member, and enjoyed gardening and bird watching.  She was loved by all who knew her, and will be greatly missed.

In addition to her husband, Gene, she is survived by 3 sons, Steven G. Cothran and his wife, Sharon of Anderson, Lt. Col. David E. Cothran and his wife, Cheryl, of Lexington, SC, and Todd W. Cothran and his wife, Tina, of Anderson;  1 sister, Joyce Graydon Watson of Gray Court, SC; and 8 grandchildren, Kyle, Brandon, Jordan, Blake, Erika, Kennedie, Kacie, and MaKenzie Cothran.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cothran was preceded in death by a brother, Starling Murray Graydon, Jr. 

A funeral service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Cothran will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at 3:30 PM at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, with Rev. Steve Silvey and Rev. Bill Rigsby officiating.  Interment will follow at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veteran’s Cemetery.  The family will be at the residence of Todd and Tina Cothran and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday from 1:30 PM until 3 PM.

LOIS VIVIAN DAVIS

DECEMBER 14, 1928 – APRIL 20, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Lois Vivian Griffith Davis, age 84, widow of the late Cecil L. Davis passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at her residence surrounded by her family.

Born in Pendleton, SC, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Griffith and the late Lois Inez Owens Griffith.  She retired from Anderson Memorial Hospital as a Ward Secretary.  Mrs. Davis was a charter member of Bridge of Hope Community Church.  Her greatest passion was preparing wonderful meals for large family gatherings.  

She is survived by her loving children; Donna Manly and husband, Richard of Anderson; Terriann Smith and husband, Brian of Lexington; and Bradley Davis and Jan Hammond of Morganton, NC, and her daughter, Emma Hammond; daughter –in-law Pam Davis of Starr, SC; nine grandchildren; Jason and Warren Manly, Chrissy Madden, Jessie Linker, Ben and James Smith, Carla Evans, Derrick and Brittany Davis, their mother Connie Davis; and nine great-grandchildren; and her special care giver, Cornelia Burton. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Steve Davis and a brother Robert Griffith. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverend Kevin Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at M. J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am until 10:30 am before the service. 

The family will be at the home.

SADIE HILLEY WILLIAMS

August 14, 1920 – April 21, 2013

Sadie Hilley Williams, age 92, of 500 Concord Road, # C-8, Anderson,  went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, April 21, 2013, upon her death at Rainey Hospice House.  Born in Hartwell, GA, she was the daughter of the late Arlis M. Hilley and the late Levester Strickland Hilley.  For 38 years, she was the faithful wife of the late James Edward Williams.

Mrs. Williams was retired from J. P. Stevens where she was employed for many years as a weaver.  She was an avid fitness enthusiast, working out at Curves for many years in spite of advanced age and declining health.  Sadie had a passion for yard work which gave her much enjoyment.  She was a devoted member of Temple Baptist Church where she was active in the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Williams is survived by a son, Larry Edward Williams and wife, Jennie, of Blue Ridge, GA; 3 daughters, Brenda Wright of Thomaston, GA, Jimmie Hooper and her husband, Buck, of Anderson, and Nancy Webb and husband, Sonny, of Thomaston, GA;  a special niece and Friday lunch companion, Mae Kellam, and a number of additional nieces and nephews who she cherished; 10 grandchildren, Terri Haning, Mark Hooper, David Webb, Tracy Wainwright, Julie Kilby, Brian Webb, Joy Sargent, James Williams, Michael Williams, and Cindy Williams.  Also surviving are 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and former husband, Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Edgbert Hilley, Albert Hilley, Willie J. Hilley, Ben Hilley, and Stewart Hilley; a son-in-law, Joe Wright, and her first beloved grandchild, Jimmy Freeman. 

A Funeral Service to celebrate and honor the life of Sadie Hilley Williams will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at 4 PM, at Temple Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr. Larry Pearson and Rev. Dr. Steven Hurte officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  The family will be at the residence of Buck and Jimmie Hooper, 120 Elliott Circle, Anderson, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home Monday, April 22, 2013, from 6 PM until 8 PM.

LAURA E. RICE

DECEEMBER 10, 1923 – APRIL 20, 2013

Laura E. Rice, age 89, of Newark, OH, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Autumn Care Center, in Ohio.

She was born on December 10, 1929 in Royston, GA to the late Linzy Franklin and Thora Anderson Patrick.  Laura attended Christ United Methodist Church in Newark.  She loved working in her flower beds and taking care of her beloved pets.

She is survived by a niece, Revonda Campbell of Conyers, GA; a son-in-law, Richard Wolever of Granville; and a long- time friend, Wayne C. (Seanne) Layton of Newark.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Rice in 2000; and her daughter, Gail Wolever in 2011. 

A Funeral Service for Laura will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday from 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm.

REVEREND JAMES CARTER

June 29, 1930 – April 19, 2013

Reverend James Junior Carter, age 82, of 496 Asa Hall Road, Iva, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2013, at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood.  Born in Toccoa, GA, he was the son of the late Willie Carter and the late Grace Cheek Carter.  For over 62 years he was the devoted and loving husband of Dorothy Frances Dunn Carter of the residence.  Rev. Carter was a minister of the Gospel for 46 years, and for the past 27 years he served as Pastor of the Antreville Church of God.

In addition to his wife, Dorothy, Rev. Carter is survived by 4 sons, James Tony Carter and his wife, Barbara, of Barnwell, SC, William Eugene Carter and wife, Rusty, of Antreville, Timothy Lee Carter and wife, Walean, of Anderson and Ronald Andrew Carter and his wife, Casey, of Anderson; 1 daughter, Grace Lorraine Nichols and her husband, Marvin, of Antreville; 2 sisters, Martha Procter and Ruth Procter, both of Greenville.  Also surviving are 23 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.  

In addition to his parents, Rev. Carter was preceded in death by a son, Jack Trenton Carter; 2 daughters, Patricia Ann Gleaton, and Debora Marie Burns; 2 brothers, Thomas Ray Carter and Joseph Carter; and 3 sisters, Mary Carter, Elizabeth Carter and Sara Morton.

The funeral service will be conducted on Monday, April 22, 2013, at 2 PM at the Antreville Church of God on County Line Road, with Rev. Barry Yates and Rev. Donnie Yates officiating.  Burial will follow at the church cemetery.  The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Sunday from 6 PM until 8 PM.

DORA SCALLAN

June 3, 1921 – April 19, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Estelle Dora Dodgens Scallan, age 91, passed away on April 19, 2013 at her home.    

Born in Anderson, SC she was the daughter of the late Ira Thomas Dodgens, Sr. and the late Addia Ann Kitchens Dodgens.  She was a homemaker and had lived in New Orleans, LA for many years before moving back to Anderson, SC. She was a member of Orrville Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son, Terry Lyles and his wife Sherry; one sister, Inez King of Honea Path; a step-daughter, Linda Mirs of LA; and four step-grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ishmael Lyles and her second husband, Dallas Scallan; six brothers; two sisters; and a step son, John Scallan.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at 4:00 PM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Dr. Wendell Bannister officiating.  Entombment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. 

The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:30 PM until 3:30 PM.

LINDA R. PATTERSON

August 27, 1944 – April 18, 2013

Linda Gail Rumsey Patterson, age 68, of 2905 Plainview Road, died at Rainey Hospice House on Thursday, April 18, 2013.  Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late James Willis Rumsey and the late Emma Nell Bailey Rumsey. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late David E. Patterson until his death in 2006.  She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Temple and also a long time member of Varennes Heights Baptist Church.  All who knew
Gail knew of her devotion to her family.  

Survivors include 2 sons, David Michael Patterson and his wife, Angela, of Anderson; James R. Patterson and his wife, Kathy, of Anderson; and a daughter, Julie Lynn Dowis of Anderson.  Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Gail was preceded in death by a grandson, Justin Patterson, and 2 brothers, James Willis Rumsey, Jr., and Bobby Joe Rumsey.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 22, 2013, at 1 PM at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, with Rev. Kirt Mitchell officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  The family will be at the home of Bobby and Kathy Patterson, 403 Regency Circle, Anderson, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Sunday, April 21, 2013 from 6 PM until 8 PM.
