Boyd King, Sr.

Townville - Boyd King, Sr., 82, of Townville, died Monday, February 3, 2014 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born March 22, 1931 in Townville, he was the son of M.W. and Clyde Sammons King. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was a lifelong Farmer and a retired employee of Haynesworth Mill. Mr. King was a member of Double Springs Baptist Church and the Bobby Oakley Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Tullie Getsinger King of the home; two daughters, Penevle Bowen of Anderson, Susan Hunnicutt and husband, Wesley of Fair Play; one son, Boyd King, Jr. and wife, Melissa of Townville; eight grandchildren, Kimberly Newman, Laurie Jacobs, David Bowen, Brian Hunnicutt, Corey Hunnicutt, Trevor Hunnicutt, Hannah King and Ashley King; 15 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two sisters, Margie Rice and husband, Buddy of Townville and Barbara King Webb of Anderson; and one brother, Clyde L. King of Hartwell, GA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Edward, Charles, Parchel, Horace, James, Milton and E.V. King, and one sister, Mamie Ruth Chastain.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Double Springs Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Kyle Caudell, Dr. David Blizzard and Rev. J. Floyd Stansell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary. The family is at the home of Boyd King, Jr., 320 Tribble Road, Townville, SC.

David E. Craig 

Sandy Springs, SC - David "Dave" Eskew Craig, 81, of Sandy Springs, died Tuesday January 28, 2014 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late John Marcus and Nellie Eskew Craig. He was a 1954 graduate of Clemson College with a Bachelor's Degree in agricultural engineering and a graduate of the University of Illinois in 1963 with a Bachelor's Degree in aeronautical engineering. He was a retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and was a veteran of Vietnam. While there, as a forward air controller, he received numerous military honors, including the Silver Star. After his 23-year career in the Air Force, he later retired from Michelin. He was a member of Barnett Masonic Lodge #106 AFM. Mr. Craig had a lifelong love of flying, both as a private pilot and in his 23-year career in the Air Force.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Alice Lucas Craig of the home; daughter, Donna Craig Gouch and husband, John of Anderson; two grandsons, Stephen Carroll and his wife Elizabeth and Christopher James Carroll all of Sandy Springs; three great granddaughters, Mollie Catherine, Natalie and Aniston Carroll; sister, Martha Craig Ligon of Sandy Springs; and numerous relatives and close friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Evan Craig.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, Sandy Springs, SC with Revs. Lindsay Hatch and W. Mark George officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 Hwy 81 North, Anderson, SC.

Jimmy “J. P.” Wicker

Townville, SC - Jimmy “J.P.” Wicker, age 66, of Townville, SC, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2014, at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late James Woodrow Wicker and the late Hattie Louise Smith Wicker.  He worked as a Barber for many years.  Jimmy attended Double Springs Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Carlie Brogden Wicker; three daughters, Cyndy Wicker Sanders and her husband Kit, of Anderson, Angie Wicker Adams, of Anderson, SC and Jamie Wicker Perdue and her husband Mark, of St. Robert, MO; two step-daughters, Seana Klokocnik and her husband George, of Townville, SC and Jaime Ashworth, of Anderson, SC; a sister, Sandra Wicker Burgess and her husband Tommy, of Anderson, SC.; and ten grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gene Wicker.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at Double Springs Baptist Church with Reverend Kyle Caudell, Reverend Royce Addis and Reverend John Marshall Daniel officiating.  Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. 

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Bobbie A. Slater

Anderson, SC - Bobbie Ann Gleason Slater, age 81, wife of Joe Dennis Slater, of Anderson, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2014, at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Robert E. Gleason and the late Anne Royster Gleason. She worked for over 30 years at True Temper as a shipping clerk.  Bobbie loved her family and her church.  She was a faithful member of Oakwood Baptist Church for over 50 years, where her and her husband were members of the same Sunday School class, Couples for Christ, for the duration of that time. She was also treasurer of the class for over 35 years.

In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by her daughter, Debbie Fitzpatrick and her husband Stacey, of Lavonia, GA.  She was lovingly known as nanny to her three grandchildren, Randy Adams, Shay Norris and Seth Slater and her four great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn and Michael Adams and Kaiden and Skyla Norris.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Dennis Slater; a daughter-in-law, Debra Slater; and a grandson, Cody Slater.

The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Jeff Davis and Reverend Jeff Bartlett officiating.  Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Nell Cook

Anderson - Nell Powell Cook, 83, of Anderson, died Sunday, January 26, 2014 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born July 4, 1930 in Chesnee, she was the daughter of the late Crawford and Vinelle Sawyer Powell. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and received her Master’s Degree from Clemson University. She taught at Woodruff High School for four years and taught Home Economics and was a Guidance Counselor at Pendleton High School for 28 years. Mrs. Cook was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Delta Kappa, the Anderson Woman’s Club, and was a volunteer at AnMed Health Medical Center for 25 years, working in the Gift Shop and sewing room. She was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for a number of years.

Survivors include her husband, Carol Cook of the home; one niece, Libby Holliday and husband, Richard of Belton; one great niece, Jill Deaton and husband, Austin of Anderson; one great nephew, Blake Holliday of Belton; and brother-in-law, John A. MacCartney of Anderson.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William Augustus Powell and two sisters, Rachel Anne Powell MacCartney and Madelyn Powell.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Boulevard Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Johnny F. McKinney. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence.

Jean Marie Myers 

Anderson, SC  - Jean Marie Myers, 76, of Anderson, SC, died Friday, January 17, 2014 at The Rainey Hospice House in Anderson, SC. Born in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Leo Emmitt Turley and Ida Catherine Mattingley Turley.  Mrs. Myers was bartender most of her working life and was widowed by her husband James Albert Hunter in 1973.   

She is survived by four children: a son: Kevin Hunter of Millsboro, Delaware; a son: Jeffrey Hunter of Anderson, SC; a daughter Pamela Jean Hunter of Maryland; and a son: Bill Hunter of Anderson, SC; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.   

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Myers was preceded in death by a son: James Emmitt Hunter.

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, Friday, January 24, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. with the Dr. Reverend Dwight Greene officiating.

Robert C. Jones

Anderson, SC - Robert C. Jones, age 90, of Anderson, passed away at Rainey Hospice House on Sunday, January 19, 2014.  Born on August 26, 1923, in Linden Hall, PA, he was the son of the late Albin Jones and the late Anna Davis Jones. For 65 years, he was the loving and devoted husband of Adeline Charlotte Robinson Jones, of the residence.

Mr. Jones proudly served his country in the US Army Air Force as a Staff  Sergeant during WWII.  He was assigned to the 9th Air Force.  Robert was a radio operator aboard a C-47 and flew two missions over Normandy Beach during the invasion dropping paratroopers and gliders. Initially stationed in Exeter, England, he was later assigned to Orleans. France.  As the war ended his unit flew to Schweinfurt, Germany, dropping off fuel and supplies for the advancing Patton’s army and bringing American POWs out on the return flight.  Among the honors Robert received were the Air Medal, American Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. He also participated in the Battle of the Bulge.  He was honorably discharged in 1945 from Fort Dix, NJ.  

Mr. Jones retired after 25 years of employment as an Industrial Engineer with Ingersoll Rand,  Phillipsburg, NJ.

He was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church as long as health permitted, and was a member of Hiram Masonic Lodge.  While still living in New Jersey he was a member of Orpheus Lodge, Stockton, where he served two terms as Master. He also was a member of Scottish Rite in Greenville.

In addition to his wife, Addie, he is survived by two sons, Raimon R. Jones and his wife, Alice, of Phillipsburg, NJ, and Richard N. Jones and his wife, Jean, of Hamburg, PA; a daughter, Barbara A. Shanahan and her husband, Theodore, of York, PA; two nephews, Charles Brown and his wife, Virginia of Hartwell, GA, and Alan Brown and wife, Meme, of Peachtree City, GA; five grandchildren, Sean Shanahan, Heather Bortz, Lindsey Zuluaga, Travis Jones and Sarah Jones. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Brown and a brother, Charles Jones.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Jones will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014, at 11 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Caroline E. Berardi officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Maxie McBride

Belton, SC - Maxie Alvin McBride, age 73, of Belton, SC, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014, at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC. 

Born in Iva, SC, at the McBride family home place on August 10, 1940, he was a son of the late William “Chief” McBride and the late Gertrude Smith McBride.  He was a graduate of Tri County Technical College and Clemson University.  He served his country in the Unites States Air Force.  Maxie retired from Ryobi after 35 years of service. He was former boy scout leader of troop 314 and security guard at Clemson football home games. Until this past December, he worked with the Anderson Independent Mail as a newspaper carrier for over 8 years. He attended The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving as Branch President and Sunday School teacher.  

He was the devoted husband of Donna Jones McBride, the loving father of Michelle Russell, of Anderson, SC, Amanda McBride Peterson, of Belton, SC, Nathan McBride, of Iva, SC and Jamie Jones, of Belton, SC; and the proud grandfather to Zachary, Tristyn, Kenslee, Drew, Lydia, Chloe, Alexa and Emily.  Also surviving are brothers, Bill McBride, of Anderson, SC and Edward McBride, Lowndesville, SC. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Marvin McBride.

The Funeral service will be held on Friday, January, January 24, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Bishop Darin Park officiating.  Interment will follow at Iva City Cemetery with military honors. 

The family will be at the home of his daughter, Amanda, at 204 Carroll Lane, Belton, SC 29627 and will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, January 23, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Keith Hunter

Williamston - Joel Keith Hunter, 45, husband of Holly LaVigne Hunter, died Saturday, January 18, 2014. 

Born March 27, 1968 in Anderson, he was the son of Dean and Gayle Hunter. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. 

Survivors include his wife, Holly Hunter of the home; children, Joel Keith Hunter, Jr. of Fayetteville, NC, Mary Morgan Hunter of Anderson, Alexander Hunter and Hayden Hunter of Williamston; parents, Dean and Gayle Hunter of Anderson; brother, Kenneth D. Hunter of Anderson; and a sister, Kimberly Hunter-Fulp of Charleston.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary.

Loriece Cobb Gambrell

Belton, SC - Loriece Cobb Gambrell, age 76, of Belton, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2014 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Madison, GA, on April 29, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Jonah Cobb and the late Annie Bell Queen Cobb.  Loriece was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and she enjoyed socializing with her friends at Pop’s Putt Putt Bingo.  She attended Faith Fellowship Ministries. She was a loving mother, a devoted grandmother, and special friend to all who knew her.

She is survived by her children, Martha Shelton, of Williamston, SC, Pete Case, of Belton, SC, Rebecca Nimmons, of Williamston, SC, Ray Gambrell, of Columbia, SC, Charolette Gambrell Myers, of Monroe, NC, and Mark Gambrell, of Greenville, SC; a sister, Hattie Mae Leonard; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny French Gambrell; sons, Clarence Edward Roach and Billy A. Roach; daughters, Alisa M. Bigsby and Charlene D. Gambrell; 3 brothers, Joel, Robert and Logan Cobb; and 2 sisters, Janie Mae Roach and Dorothy Faye Jackson.

The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 15, at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Phillip Clardy and Reverend Sam Duncan officiating.  Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the home of Rebecca Nimmons, 203 Woodtrail Drive, Williamston, SC, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2013.

Rev. Bob Hicks

Anderson - Reverend James Robert Hicks, 95, husband of the late Rev. Clara Lou Bradberry Hicks, went Home to Heaven Sunday, January 12, 2014.

Born August 4, 1918 in Anderson, he was the son of the late James Summer and Fannie Holland Hicks. He served as Pastor of Barnette Grove Emmanuel Holiness Church, working with his wife, Rev. Clara Hicks, who served as Assistant Pastor, from 1978 until their retirement in 2012. Prior to his pastorate, he worked at Lowe’s for a number of years.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Hicks and wife, Wanda and Barry Hicks and wife, Carolyn, all of Anderson; six grandchildren, Dusty Hicks, Jessi Hicks Gilliam and husband, Randy, Rocky Hicks, Jacob Hicks and wife, Stephanie, Sarah Anne Hicks and Hannah Deanne Hicks; and two great grandchildren, Aron and Savannah Gilliam. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. 

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Arice Moore, Edna Barnette, and Lydia Harris; and two brothers, Hoke S. Hicks and Ozey H. Hicks. 

Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Thursday at Barnette Grove Church conducted by Bishop Ray Boggs, Rev. Ray Massey, Dante’ Thompson, Rev. Melvin Powell, Pastor Dale Duckett, and Rev. Chris Hudson. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. A private burial will follow the service at New Silver Brook Cemetery. The family is at the home of a son, Barry and Carolyn Hicks, 1010 Harris Road, Anderson.

Lee T. Graham

Anderson - Olivia Lee Taylor Graham, 89, widow of Luther Wilson "Hucky" Graham, died Saturday, January 11, 2014 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born November 24, 1924 in Elberton, Ga., she was the daughter of the late John B. and Callie Ann Seymour Taylor. She was a retired employee of LaFrance Industries and was a member of Pope Drive Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Vicky G. Henderson and husband, Robert of Clover; one son, Kenneth W. Graham of Anderson; five grandchildren, Greg Williamson, Carey Williamson, Dana Rutledge, Crystal Howard and Josh Henderson; and four great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Rutledge; granddaughter, Angela Rutledge; five sisters and three brothers.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park conducted by Dr. Mack Tester.
