Mary Tucker McPhail

Anderson, SC - Mary Lillian Tucker McPhail, 82, widow of Donald Bellinger McPhail, died Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Anderson Place Nursing Center.

Born December 17, 1932 in Williamston, she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Mary Sue Brown Tucker. She was a graduate of Pelzer-Williamston High School where she was captain of the basketball team, President of the senior class and Valedictorian.
She was a graduate of Erskine College and received her Master’s degree from Clemson University. Mrs. McPhail was a retired teacher and a life member of the S.C. Education Association. She was past state President of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of the Hudson Berry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Anderson County Woman’s Club. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and a former member of Big Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include her brother, David deJarnette Tucker IV of Rural Hall, NC; nieces and nephews, Harriette Jane Tucker, Harrison Tucker III, Ida Sue Elrod and Ann Elrod Mihalik, all of Williamston, Robert F. Elrod, Jr. of Franklin, Tennessee, Mary Catherine Tucker of Terre Haute, Indiana and Michael Tucker of Idaho.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harrison Tucker, Jr. and a sister, Harriette Tucker Elrod.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Evan M. Hill. Burial will follow in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

Lorrie McAbee

Central, SC - Lorraine Nadine Cullum McAbee, 76, of Sharon Church Road, wife of Walt McAbee, died Thursday, January 8, 2015 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born June 24, 1938 in Newcastle, Wyoming, she was the daughter of the late Marshall and Hazel Morris Cullum. She was retired from AnMed Home Health Care and had attended Concord Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Walt McAbee of the home; two sons, Walt McAbee, Jr. and wife, Tamara of Jacksonville, FL, and John Robert McAbee and wife, Gail of Commerce, GA; two daughters, Rebekah Kavlie and husband, Mike of Chisholm, MN and Margaret Ann “Meg” McAbee of Clemson; seven grandchildren, Ashley Armstrong and husband, Shawn of Snellville, GA, Conner McAbee, Zachary McAbee and Nicholas McAbee, all of Jacksonville, FL, Michael Moody, Johnny McAbee and Matthew McAbee, all of Commerce, GA; three great grandchildren, Colton, Elleigh and Jett Armstrong of Snellville, GA; sister, Leone Nelson and husband, Jerry of Sioux Falls, SD; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Cullum of Cortez, CO.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Max Cullum.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Dr. Ron Culbertson. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.

John Parasho

Anderson, SC - John George Parasho, age 83, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Bristol, PA, on March 27, 1931, he was the son of the late George Agi Parasho and the late Mary Poupos Parasho.  He proudly served his country in the United States Army.  He was a graduate of Boys High School, Class of 1949 and the University of South Carolina, School of Pharmacy.  John was a long-time local pharmacist in Anderson and the former owner of Service Rexall Drugs in Pruitt Shopping Center.  He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

He is survived by his family, Marion S. Crawford, of Anderson, SC, George John Parasho, of Charlotte, NC and James John Parasho, of Anderson, SC; a sister, Georgia P. Vasilos, of Atlanta, GA; nieces, Mercedes Paxton and Mary Alice George, of Atlanta, GA; and a nephew, George Vasilos, of Atlanta, GA.

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at 10:00 am at Grace Episcopal Church with Father Tom Pistolis officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 9, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the Trisagion Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Mary Harriet Dunn

Anderson, SC - Mary Harriet Dunn, age 74, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, SC, on June 13, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Henry Brooks and the late Thethel Hayes Brooks.  She was a graduate of McDuffie High School.  She was a member of Freedom Center, in Homeland Park.

She is survived by her loving husband, James E. Dunn; two daughters, Carol Loyd and her husband Dwain, of Anderson, SC and Melissa Dunn, of Anderson; two grandchildren, Jessica Looney and Meredith Looney; and a sister-in-law, Helen Brooks, of Anderson, SC.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Clyde Brooks.

The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Freedom Center with Reverends Phillip Sears, Jeremy Sears and Brad Biename officiating.  Interment will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Jesse E. Johnson

Anderson, SC - Jesse Edward Johnson, 80, died Saturday, January 3, 2015.

Born April 30, 1934 in Glen Hayes, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Rev. Frank and Sadie Branham Johnson. He served in the U.S. Army and was retired from ButterKrust Bakery.

Survivors include three daughters, Diana Paris and husband, Chris of Ringoes, NJ, Teressa “Terry” Blaettler and husband, Kurt of Anderson, and Jennifer Van Luvan and husband, Jesse of Dallas, TX; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Parsley of Pickerington, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Johnson and a sister, Evelyn Parsley.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Entombment following the service will be private.

Joseph J. Byrne Jr.

Anderson, SC - Joe, 69, passed away on December 30, 2014 with his family by his side. 

Joe, son of Joseph Sr. and Kathleen, was born in Staten Island and lived in Brooklyn, NY until moving to Neptune, NJ in 1958. He attended St. Rose High School in Belmar. After high school he served four years in the Air Force. Joe was an officer of the Long Branch Police Department from 1974-1977 and Belmar Police Department from 1977-2001.

Joe and his wife of nearly 43 years, Joanne retired to Anderson, SC to be near their children and grandchildren. He loved nothing more than being with his family and friends.  He was always going out of his way to help others and often extend his family even further by welcoming those who were in need.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Kathleen Byrne and his sisters, Kathleen and Sharon.

Joe is survived by his wife Joanne, Anderson, SC; his sister, Kelly Byrne, Virginia Beach, VA; his daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Chris Campbell, Simpsonville, SC; his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph (Jamie) and Scarlett Byrne of Williamston, SC ; his daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Steven Mull of Boiling Springs, SC; his daughter Kathleen Byrne and future son-in-law, Bharat Ganesan, Atlanta, GA; his grandchildren Andrew, Braeden, Hayley, Delaney, Ella, Kayden, Blair and Asher; his devoted dog, Brooklyn and numerous cousins and loved ones.

The family will be greeting friends and relatives at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1200 Cornelia Road, Anderson, SC 29621 at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2015 with a funeral mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery, 140 Inway Drive, Anderson, SC 29621.

Pete Riggins

Pendleton, SC - J.P. Edward "Pete" Riggins, 92,  husband of Martha Jane Porter Riggins, died Friday, December 26, 2014 at his residence.

Born October 5, 1922 in Pickens County, he was the son of the late David Alexander and Mary Evaline Christopher Riggins. He was a retired logger and had worked as an assistant supervisor at Gerrish Millikin. Mr. Riggins was a member of Refuge Baptist Church where he served in a number of leadership roles including choir director and Deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Jane Riggins of the home; children, Pat R. Owen and husband, Don, Tommy Edward Riggins and wife, Martha Jo, all of Pendleton, Violet Rhodes and husband, Andy of Anderson, Kathy Riggins of the home and Tracy Burch of Greer; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Steve Olin Riggins and Edwin Gary Riggins; five brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Mike Cothran. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. A private burial will be in Refuge Baptist Church Cemetery. The family is at the residence.

Ruth Wright Whitfield

Anderson, SC - Ruth Wright Whitfield, 90, entered her eternal rest on Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at Ellenburg Nursing Center.

She was born February 26, 1924 in Townville, and was the daughter of the late Ernest and Faye Cole Wright. Mrs. Whitfield was a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a former member of the SC Nurses Association and a Fellow in the American College of Nursing Home Administrators. She retired from Ellenburg Nursing Center after 25 years of service. She was a faithful member of New Prospect Baptist Church and a teacher in the Young Adult Sunday School Department for 26 years.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry B. Whitfield and wife, Sue Schumpert Whitfield of Fort Mill, SC and Vic J. Whitfield and wife, Judy McAlister Whitfield of Bradenton, FL; four grandchildren, Mark Whitfield and wife, Melissa of Fort Mill, Tracy Whitfield Gange and husband, Michael of Belmont, NC, Shannon Whitfield of Bradenton, FL, and Shane Whitfield and wife, Melanie of Irmo, SC; seven great grandchildren, Kaleb Daigle, Aimee Daigle, Whitney Daigle Lodholtz, Nicholas Gange , Adam Whitfield, Marissa Whitfield and Niclaus Whitfield; two great-great grandchildren, Aiden and Alexander Lodholtz, all of the greater Charlotte area; and two sisters, Mrs. Marshall (Sudie) King and Mrs. Justin (Carolyn) Whitfield of Anderson.

Mrs. Whitfield was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Folger J. "Whit" Whitfield; brother, Edward B. "Bill" Wright; and three sisters, Mrs. L.E. (Juanita) Wright, Mrs. Richard (Virginia) Sheffield and Mrs. William (Maxie) Meredith.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Dr. Tony Smith. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary.

Born in Anderson, SC , on August 12, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Broadus King, Sr,
and the late Beulah Threatt King . She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.

She is survived by: three nephews: Michael King and wife Sheryl of  Anderson, SC, Bo King
and wife Candace of Anderson, SC, and Robbie King and wife Jennifer of Anderson, SC;  six
nieces: Lana King of Anderson, SC, Monica Parrot of Irmo, SC, Diana Vaughan and husband
Robert of Ehrhardt, SC, Deborah Biscontini and husband Arnold of St. Martin, Virgin Islands,
and Terry Spinks and husband Mo of Acworth, GA, and Kim Ghele of Mount Pleasant, SC;;
one brother: Hilton L. King and his wife Judy of Anderson, SC; one sister: Sara Moore of
Clemson, SC; one sister-in-law: Martha King of Anderson, SC; and great nieces: Heather
Erickson and Cindy Myers.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by: her husband, James Harold

George P. Tripp

Anderson, SC - George Parrish Tripp, 90, husband of Jo Ann Hall Tripp, died Monday, December 8, 2014 at AnMed Health Medical Center

Born in Easley, he was the son of the late Harry B. and Ossie Mae Parrish Tripp. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II serving in the 86th Division, 342nd Infantry, known as the Black Hawks. He was a retired electrician and was a member of First Baptist Church and the Baraca Class.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Tripp of the home; one son, John Robert Tripp and wife, Caroline of Easley; one daughter, Cathe Tripp and husband, Jack Burdine of Easley; stepson, Sam Hall and wife, Cindy of Martinez, GA;, three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma Jean Smith Tripp and a brother, John Robert Tripp.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Dr. James R. Thomason and Dr. Lawrence Webb. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81.

Ron Wesley

Anderson, SC -Ronald Paul Wesley, 71, husband of Shelly Dixon Wesley, died Friday, December 5, 2014.
Born August 3, 1943 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he was the son of the late Paul and Anna Ruth Percy Wesley. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a graduate of the University of the South. Ron was active in Boy Scouts of America where he was an Eagle Scout and served as a Boy Scout Leader. He was a former Antique Store owner and owned and operated an Insurance Appraisal Service. He was a Mason and attended Grace Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Shelly Wesley; four children, Kelly Ann Wesley of Charlotte, NC, Kerry Lynn Wesley Armstrong and husband, Russ, Regan Whitney Oppermann and Ryan Paul Wesley, all of Anderson; five grandchildren, Alex Goulet, Haleigh Smith, Julia Armstrong, Immy Armstrong and Benjamin Smith; and his children's mothers, Diane Wesley and Teresa Wesley and her husband, Paul Nelson, all of Anderson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Randie Ruthann Wesley.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Charlie Brookshire. Burial will follow in Norris Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. The family is at the home of Teresa Wesley, 4012 Abbeville Highway, Anderson.

Marie Gilbert

Anderson, SC - Cynthia Marie Gilbert, 64, died Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born November 2, 1950 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Louise Kay Gilbert. She was a graduate of McDuffie High School and was retired from Wal-Mart. Marie loved reading her Bible and biographies. She loved Clemson Football, Jeopardy, Beatles music and crossword puzzles. Her family is left to treasure decades of family pictures she made. She was a member of Asbury Baptist Church.

Surviving are her brother, Eddie Gilbert of the home and sister, Patsy Makison and husband, Eddie of Anderson. She was lovingly known as “Aunt Ree Ree” to Josh, Ashley and Brighton, to Jonathan, Shana, Brooklyn, Skylar and Alexis, and to Kevin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Michael Gilbert.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Mary Teasley. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Saturday at the mortuary. The family is at the home of her sister, Patsy Makison, 3201 Old Williamston Road, Anderson.
