ETHEL M. WHITFIELD

June 20, 1930 – December 31, 2010

Anderson, SC – Ethel M. Whitfield, age 80, of Anderson, wife of the late Reverend Hazel Whitfield, passed away Friday, December 31, 2010 at White Oak Manor in Spartanburg, SC.

Born in Anderson, SC on June 20, 1930 to the late Corrie Tollison Morgan, Mrs. Whitfield graduated from Girls’ High School and worked for many years as a daycare provider, most recently at the Covenant Baptist Church Child Development Center. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church.                               

Survivors include a son, Larry Whitfield and his wife Robin of Spartanburg, SC; her daughter, Louise W. Cox of Spartanburg, SC; three grandchildren, Donna Haulbrook and her husband Tommy, Drew Whitfield and Ashley Whitfield; and one great-grandson, Tyler Haulbrook.

In addition to her husband and mother, Mrs. Whitfield was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Roger Cox; a grandson, Jeffery Shaw; and a special aunt, Della Carnes.

The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverends Phil McAlister and Gary Hensley officiating. Interment will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery. 

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Monday, January 3, 2011 at The McDougald Funeral Home.

ELMORE ALEXANDER

ANDERSON - Elmore Rosebur Alexander, Jr., 83, of 107 Grove Park Drive, husband of Isabel Wright Alexander, died Friday, December 31, 2010 at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Center.

Born April 22, 1927 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Elmore R. and Janie Burress Alexander. He graduated from Dreher High School in Columbia, SC and attended Clemson College and graduated from University of South Carolina in 1950. He served in the US Navy and US Army. His work career in banking took him to Charlotte, Woodruff, Graniteville, Kings Mountain and High Point. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Anderson and the Touchdown Club. He was a member St. John's United Methodist Church where he was in the Marshall Fant Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his wife, Isabel Wright Alexander of the home; 2 sons, Elmore R. Alexander, III (Pam) of Boston, MA and Richard B. Alexander (Mary Louise) of Arlington, VA; his sons' mother, Betty Phillips of High Point, NC; 3 grandsons, Eric, Stephen and Michael Alexander; brother, Marion B. Alexander (Rachel) of Knoxville, TN. Also surviving are his 4 step-children, Burley Shedd (Robin) of Mobile, AL, Susan Whittington (Earle) of Atlanta,  Betsy White (Jerry) of Metarie, LA and Sally Garner (Ed) of Lexington, SC; 6 step-grandchildren Ben, Jonathan, Kevin, Libby, Anna and Leigh.

Funeral service will be held at 11am Monday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel with Rev. Dan Batson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the Northeast Chapel. A private burial will be held the next day at M. J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

RALPH L. BOGGS

April 24, 1934 – December 30, 2010

FAIR PLAY, SC - Mr. Ralph Lewis Boggs, age 76, husband of BettyJane Hoffpauir Boggs of 3442 Old Dobbins Bridge Road, died Thursday, December 30, 2010 at his residence.

Born in Oakway, SC on April 24, 1934, Mr. Boggs was a son of the late Saratus Arlington Boggs and Nellie Eloise Martin Boggs.  He was a graduate of Boys’ High School and worked for BASF in Research and Development for over 25 years, retiring in 1994.  He enjoyed traveling and was an avid fisherman.  Mr. Boggs was a member of the Woodman of the World and Temple Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of the home; son, Neelis Boggs and his wife, Joyce of Fair Play, SC; daughter, Paula B. Swofford and her son, Chase Swofford of Plano, TX; brother, Harold Boggs of Melrose, FL and Jessie Boggs of Dallas, GA and sister, Julia Ann Stitcher of Covington, GA.

The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 3, 2011 at 11:am at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel officiated by the Reverend Gordon Taylor and Dr. Larry Pearson.  Entombment will follow. 

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Sunday, January 2, 2011 from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm.

DR. ROSEMARY SCHIAVI

ANDERSON, SC – Dr. Rosemary Schiavi, age 63, daughter of the late Stefano Schiavi and Rose Falso Schiavi, passed away at her home.

Dr. Schiavi was a Professor at Anderson University and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anderson and was a supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

She is survived by an uncle, Frank Falso, Sr., and numerous cousins.

Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Syracuse, New York.  There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 2151, Memphis, TN 38105.

Julia Goodson

GREENVILLE- Julia Honea Goodson, 92, of Greenville formerly of Anderson widow of the late Luiaco "Jerry" Goodson, died December 29, 2010 at Magnolia Manor, Greenville, SC. 

Born March 18, 1918 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Waymon Thomas Honea and the late Burkie Irene Burton Honea Smith. She was retired from Singer Corporation and was a member of Boulevard Baptist Church and Taylors First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Becky Rollins and her husband, Johnny of Taylors, son Keith Goodson and his wife, Debbie of Greenville, grandchildren: Matt Rollins and his wife, Rolyn of Greenville, Brad Rollins and his wife, Angie of Greer and PFC Josh Goodson of Greenville, five great grandchildren: Jack Rollins, Celie Ann Rollins, Lucy Rollins, R.J. Rollins and Julia Rollins, and brother, Chafer Honea of Mt. Pleasant. She was preceded in death by brothers: Andrew and Carlton Honea and sisters, Lena Wright, Mabel Sanders and Martha Radford.

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Sunday  at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel conducted by her grandsons,  Matt Rollins, Brad Rollins and PFC Josh Goodson. Interment will be in New Silver Brook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 PM prior to the service. The family will be at the home of her daughter, 123 Trent Drive, Taylors.

LUCILLE CLARK CARTEE

WILLIAMSTON – Lucille Gross Clark Cartee, 67, of 70 Allie Campbell Road, died Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at AnMed Health Medical Center. 

Born October 7, 1943 in Hazard, KY, she was the daughter of the late Berry and Lucy Melton Gross. She was a former employee of Capri’s Italian in Anderson and was a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, James Steven Cartee of the home; son, Samuel Clark of Simpsonville; two daughters, Susan Hartis of Charlotte, NC and Lynn Staniffer of Easley; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 3, 2011 at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, conducted by Rev. Willie Honea. The family will receive friends following the service. The family is at the home of her mother-in-law, Elizabeth Cartee, 3625 Six & Twenty Road, Pendleton.

Rudolph Gray, Sr.

IVA, SC - Mr. Rudolph “Doc” Gray, Sr., age 84, died Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Oconee Medical Center.

Born in Iva, SC on October 22, 1926, Rudolph was a son of the late Dewey Gray and Beatrice McCleskey Gray.  He attended Unity Baptist Church in Starr as long as his health permitted and retired from Jackson Mill in Iva with over 50 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Georgia McCurry Gray; their son, Rudy Gray and his wife, Anne of Seneca, SC; one sister, Shirley Ashley of Iva, SC; three grandchildren, Becky Pitts and her husband Timothy, Katy Neely and her husband Jonathan, and Cindy Lazear and her husband Weston.

In addition to his parents, Rudolph was predeceased by two infant children, Ronald Leslie Gray and Georgene Gray; and one brother, W.E. Gray. 

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday, January 1, 2011 from 10:00am until 11:00am with the funeral service beginning at 11:30am in the Chapel.  Dr. Rudy Gray and Rev. Jerry Gray will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Iva City Cemetery.

David M. Hargett

ANDERSON-David Hargett, 50, of Anderson, SC, went to be with the Lord on December 29, 2010.  His fight was long and hard, but his family finds comfort in knowing that he is no longer enduring the pain and suffering . 

Mr. Hargett was born on August 26, 1960 in Charlotte, NC to the late Bobby Lee Hargett and the late Linda Jenkins. 

He is survived by his wife, Yovanna Moreno Hargett, his son Dustin Hargett and wife Melissa, his daughter Kristina Moore and husband Kevin, as well as their five daughters, Carrie Moore, Mackenzie Moore, Chandler Moore, Emmah Mattison, and Bella Moore, all of Anderson.  He also leaves behind his brothers, Brad and Diana Hargett of Winston-Salem, NC and Steve Hargett of Charlotte, NC, and sister, Lisa Cacho of Anderson. 

Mr. Hargett and his wife of 26 years, Yovanna, had so much pride in their family, and his grandchildren were the light of their lives.  He leaves behind a family owned business, Edgebrook Construction and Remodeling, which will continue to be run by his family. 

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM Friday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel with Matt Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30PM prior to the service.

WILLIAM RALPH VICKERY

SEPTEMBER 3, 1912 – DECEMBER 28, 2010

ANDERSON, SC – William Ralph Vickery, age 98, of West Whitner Street, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at the Brown Convalescent Center in Royston, GA.

Born September 3, 1912, in Hart County, GA, he was a son of the late William Robert Vickery and Olie McKee Vickery.  Mr. Vickery was a retired cloth room inspector in the textiles industry and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anderson.

He is survived by a brother, Rudolph Vickery of Athens, GA; and his two devoted caregivers: Yevette Hicks and Venice Wood.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nellie Doker Vickery; two brothers: Charles Vickery & Asa Vickery; and seven sisters: Cecil Wilson, Nola Griffin, Julia Haley, Lizzie Kate Boleman, Syble Campbell, Jodine Moore, and Kathleen Broome.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, December 31, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church celebrated by Father Aubrey McNeal, OFM.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 10 am until 11am on Friday, prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Joe Reed Boleman, Shelton Hicks, Thurston Glenn, Jalon Stone, Barry Campbell, and Neal Boleman.  Ashley Vickery and Sherry Jennings will service as Honorary Escort.

MAXIE  KELLETT

ANDERSON, SC - Mr. Maxie Horace Kellett, age 53, of 245 Hales Drive, died December 28, 2010 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born on June 8, 1957, Maxie was the son of the late Horace Joseph Kellett and Mary Elizabeth McCuen Kellett.  He was a graduate of Woodmont High School and served in the United States Army.  He was an avid Clemson Tiger and Nascar fan.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Judy Brown Kellett of the home; daughters, Marilyn Dunn and her husband, Ken and Renae Hawks and her husband, Chris; three grandchildren, Amber Dunn Powell and her husband, Russell, Reid Dunn and Cabble Hawks, all of Anderson, SC. He was preceded in death by a close aunt and uncle, Helen and Carlos Kellett.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, December 31, 2010 at 1:00 pm at New Silver Brook Cemetery officiated by Mr. Tony Kellett.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday, December 30, 2010.

ETTA YON

ANDERSON - Loretta "Etta" Mae McClellan Yon, 87, passed away on Monday, December 27, 2010 at Anderson Place Health Care Center where she had been a resident for the past 3 years. She was previously a resident of The Garden House Assisted Living Center. Formerly of the Liberty Hwy in Anderson, Etta was pre-deceased by her husband, William Paul Yon, Jr. in 1999; son, William Paul Yon, III in 1952 as well as 2 brothers, Van and Herbert McClellan. She has 2 surviving daughters, Bonnie N. Yon of Mount Pleasant, SC and Glenda Yon White (Phil) of Anderson; 4 granddaughters, Cameran Eubanks of Annapolis, Maryland, Cayce Eubanks and Ivey White of Charleston, SC and Olivia White of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC and brother, William D. McClellan of Williamston, SC

Etta was born April 17, 1923 to Nellie Prince and Van Patrick McClellan of Anderson. She graduated from Anderson Girls High - Class of 1942 and Anderson College - Class of 1944. She spent summers at Appalachian State Teachers College and began her teaching career with 1st and 2nd grades at Bowen School in Anderson as well as Green Pond School. Later she became a pre-school teacher at Anderson First Baptist Church during the 1950's through 1970's. She went on to become a teachers aide for School District 5 kindergartens at both Estes Elementary and New Prospect Elementary where she retired with over 30 years of teaching.

After retirement, Etta enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with her 4 granddaughters. Besides her love of little children, she had a true passion for growing things. She was an avid gardener and especially enjoyed her English garden which she designed, planted and maintained for years. She was known to bring plants from her greenhouse to sell at the Anderson County Farmers Market and houseplants were her specialty. She was also an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed pursuing various arts and crafts.

Etta was perhaps best known for her quick smile and eternal optimism...always keeping a song in her heart and enthusiasm for life until the very end. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date at the home of Glenda and Phil White, 1835 Harris Bridge Road in Anderson.  Arrangements for cremation by Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request that donations may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.

EDITH W. VICKERY

ANDERSON, SC – Edith Walters Vickery, 88, passed away on Monday, December 27th at her home.

Born in Hart County, GA, on December 13, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Amos Walters and Pearl Smith Walters.  She was a member of Pope Drive Baptist Church and active in the Mary Ellen King Sunday School Class.

Survivors include a son, Pat Vickery and wife, Jo Ann of Anderson, SC; a granddaughter, Joanna Herath and husband, John of Raleigh, NC; sisters:  Sue Boyer, Janie Baker, Alma Brock all of Anderson, SC, Mary Ann Marsh of Lexington, SC, Emily Brock of Isle of Palms, SC, Henrietta Roper of Hartwell, GA; and brother, Harvey Walters of Isle of Palms, SC. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers: Bill Walters and Alford Walters, both of Anderson, SC.

The Funeral Service will be held at 12noon on Thursday, December 30, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Mack Tester. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to Pope Drive Baptist Church, 2510 Pope Drive, Anderson, SC 29625.
