JEAN KELLEY MILFORD

January 30, 1927 – July 12, 2013

Jean Kelley Milford, age 86, passed away at her residence at the Presbyterian Home in Easley, SC, on Friday, July 12, 2013.  Born in St. Augustine, FL, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Dexter Kelley and the late Lena Carnes Kelley.  For 58 years, she was the loving and devoted wife of the late James Lamar Milford until his death in 2007.  

Mrs. Milford was a graduate of Furman University with a BA degree in Home Economics.  For many years, she was a dedicated teacher, having taught Home Economics in Gaffney, and later taught first and second grades at Cleo Bailey School in Anderson, LaFrance Elementary School, Belton Elementary School and Oakwood Christian School.  Jean was an avid reader, and enjoyed quilting, sewing, needle point and cross stitching. She and her husband, Lamar, enjoyed square dancing together.   She volunteered as a Pink Lady with the Women’s Auxiliary at AnMed Health Medical Center.  Jean was also a gifted artist.  Mrs. Milford was a member of Central Presbyterian Church.  

Mrs. Milford is survived by 2 daughters, Carol Oxford and her husband, John, and Kathy Hall and her husband, Dean, both of Anderson; a step-son, James Michael Milford of Lubbock, TX; a sister, Diane Ginn of Anderson;  also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.  In addition to her parents and her husband, Lamar, Jean was preceded in death by a brother, David Page Kelley.

A Graveside service to celebrate and honor the life of Jean Milford will be held on Monday, July 15, 2013, at 11:00 AM at the Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Anderson, with Rev. Allyson Helvie officiating.  The family is at the residence of Kathy and Dean Hall and will receive friends at Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery following the service.  

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Central Presbyterian Church, 1404 North Boulevard, Anderson, SC 29621.

DOUG EVANS

STARR - Douglas Arnold Evans, 73, of 1111 Agnew Road, beloved husband to Janice Loftis Evans for 58 years, departed this Earth on Friday, July 12, 2013 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born November 4, 1939 in Anderson County, he was the son of Edna Gibson Evans Fairbrother of Dallas, GA and the late George Evans. Doug was retired from Owens Corning Fiberglass in management after 50+ years. He was a faithful member and Elder at Varennes Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Sertoma Club since 1981, President of Sertoma in 1994, Sertoman of the Year in 1995, and Regional Sertoman of the Year in 1996. He was also a long time member of APIX, a United Way Volunteer, Leadership Anderson, and Chamber of Commerce. Also, he volunteered through the Literacy Program at Southwood Middle School and actively volunteered in Anderson School District 3.

Survivors include his wife, Janice of the home; two daughters, Josie Collier-Owen of Starr and Sandy Bennett (Randy) of Hanahan; five grandchildren, Travis Collier (Kami) of Starr, Katie Orth (Brent) of Canton, GA, Molly Bennett of Hanahan, and Dylan Bennett of Goose Creek; ten great grandchildren, Ezekiel and Emily Collier of the home, Ashley Black, Dustin Collier, Gage, Cole, and Jonah Orth, Tylee Johnson, and Bryce Hazlemeyer; mother, Edna Fairbrother and step-father, Pat Snyder of Dallas, GA; and a brother, Daniel Evans (Janice) of Tallapoosa, GA. 

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Bradford Evans. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2013 at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Frank Norris and his granddaughter, Katie Orth. Burial will follow in the Varennes Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence.

TONY BRUCE

November 21, 1953 – July 10, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Tony Lerue Bruce, age 59, of Anderson, passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Oconee Memorial Hospital.

Born in Anderson County, SC, he was the son of the late Rumus Lerue Bruce and the late Willie Mae Hanley Bruce.  He was a 1972 graduate of BHP.  Tony worked at BMW Manufacturing for over 16 years.  He was an avid fisherman.  He was a member of Asbury Baptist Church where he was the former Sunday School Director and had assisted in their music ministry.  He was a loving husband, a devoted father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa Palmer Bruce; his children, Tony Bruce, Jr., Melissa Bailey, Brandon Bailey, and April Spataro; a brother, Joel “Shorty” Bruce, of Tampa, FL; a sister, Marie Strickland, of Belton, SC and Jean Phillips, of Honea Path, SC; and five grandchildren, Mikaela and Braydon Bailey, Collin and Caiden Bryson and Nevaeh Clark. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Ray Bruce.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday, July 13, 2013, from 2:00 PM until 3:30 PM.  The Funeral Service will follow in the chapel of the funeral home, beginning at 4:00 PM with Reverend Dale Phillips and Reverend 

Brandon Bailey officiating.  Interment will follow at Old Silver Brook Cemetery.

ALTON “SHORTY” BRYANT

December 25, 1952 – July 9, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Alton Randolph Bryant, age 60, of Anderson, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late Clarence Randoph Bryant and the late Virginia Bell Bryant.  He was a retired car detailer and an avid hot rod and motorcycle enthusiast.  He was a member of The Peckerwood Motorcycle Club.  “Shorty” enjoyed his peacocks, turkeys and rabbits. He was a kind and loving man and a big-hearted friend to all who knew him. 

He is survived by his son, Shannon Bryant; a step-son, Michael Poole; a sister, Deborah Ballew; and three grandchildren, Collin, Faith and Shanna Faye.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Poole; and a sister, Kathy Segers.

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Mike Harrell and Reverend Sam Duncan officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. 

The family will be at the home of Tommy Segers, 242 Crestview Drive, Starr, SC and will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, July 12, 2013 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

DORIS W. CROMER

ANDERSON- Doris Webb Cromer, 84, died Monday July 8, 2013 at her residence.

Born March 3, 1929 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Azalee Rampey Webb. She was a retired business woman having owned and operated Decors by Doris. She had huge fun bowling in state and city tournaments and local leagues. She also served in many capacities of leadership in the Anderson Women's Bowling Association. 

Her passion was in working and enriching God's earth in growing and sharing its production whether it be lovely flowers or beans. Forest Hill Baptist Church, the warmest, most beautiful sanctuary was her place of worship.

Her most important and prideful achievement was in rearing and nurturing her children: Gary B. Cromer, of Charleston, Leonard F. Cromer of Anderson and her daughter, Deborah L. Wilson of Anderson. She lovingly embraced her daughter-in-law, Janet R. Cromer of Charleston and son-in-law, Greg Wilson of Anderson. Each moment spent with her grandsons, Chad Cromer and Luke Wilson and granddaughter, Sara Wilson were valued to the highest. She is also survived by her brother, Fred Webb of Spartanburg and sister, Evelyn Kay of Charlotte, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Wilfred and Ed Webb and sister, Thelma Koon.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Forest Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Owen officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 AM Thursday at the church. The family will be at their respective homes.

GERALDINE DAVIS COOK

ANDERSON, SC - Geraldine Davis Cook, 82, of Anderson, SC,  formerly of Albany, GA, widow of James Donald Cook, died Monday, July 8, 2013 at her home. 

Born in Jasper, GA, she was the daughter of the late O.M. and Colleen Jones Davis. She was a professional drapery designer and of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Cook Fletcher and husband, John of Anderson; two sons, Raymond Oscar Cook and James Ronald Cook, both of Anderson; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Michael Fletcher and wife, Stacey of Columbia, SC and Rebecca Michelle Fletcher of Oxford, MS; two great grandchildren, Grayson Michael Fletcher and Allison Kendal Fletcher of Columbia; three sisters, Betty Jean West and Helen Sue Andrews, both of Canton, GA and Joy Dills of Waleska, GA; and her stepmother, Geneva Davis Knight of Waleska, GA.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Davis.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Dr. Jack Couch. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson, SC. The family is at the residence.

DANIEL JORDAN

MARCH 29,1921 – JULY 6, 2013

ANDERSON, SC - Daniel Jordan, age 92 , husband of Elizabeth Woody Jordan , passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, SC,  he was the son of the late Daniel Webster Jordan and the late Rose Lee Jordan.  Mr. Jordan was a member of LaFrance Church of God.  He had worked at LaFrance Mill for 46 years and was an avid Nascar Fan. 

He is survived by his wife, and their children; sons, Danny Jordan and his wife,  Louise of Powdersville, SC, Larry Merck and his wife, Sarah of Cincinnati, OH; daughters, Terri Castrinos of Sandy Springs, SC, Mary Ann Stoudemire and Alma Jean Sears both of Greenville, SC ; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Tommy and Willie Jordan; 3 sisters, Dot Wagers, Lou Ellen Rowland and L.G. Mashburn.

The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 11:00 at LaFrance Church of God with the Reverend Billy Bowman officiating. The family will be at the home  of Terri Castrinos, 103 Bonaire Point, Anderson SC 29621, and will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM  on Tuesday, prior to the service. 

Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

ANNETTE HEMBREE SAMS

ANDERSON - Annette Hembree Sams, 80, of 208 Woodridge Court, wife of Jack D. Sams, died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born April 8, 1933 in Hartwell, GA, she was the daughter of the late J.C. and Alma Roukoski Hembree. She was a 1950 graduate of Girl's High School and attended Winthrop College. She was a retired employee of Poinsett Lumber & Manufacturing Co. (later Singer/Ryobi). Mrs. Sams was a former Brownie Leader and was active in Girl Scouts for a number of years. She was a longtime member of Concord Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Jack Sams of the home; daughter, Julie S. DeKoning and husband, Mike of Easley; four grandchildren, Allison LaBrash and husband, John of Hampton, VA, Kyle DeKoning of Greenville, Ryan DeKoning and Eric DeKoning of Easley; three great grandchildren, Benjamin Michael LaBrash, Erin Annette LaBrash, and Aubree Mickelboro; and a sister, Harriette Walden of Leeton, MO.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John Dyar Hembree and Jerry B. Hembree.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Dr. Don Cox and Rev. Bob Marcaurelle. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence.

MAX MIDDLETON

ANDERSON - Max Everett Middleton, 65, of 1303 Old Webb Road, husband of Mary Alice Powell Middleton, died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born December 31, 1947 in Greenville, Alabama, he was the son of the late James Rosco and Melba Holley Middleton.  Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Middleton; niece, Allison Kelso, her husband Rob, great-nephew Sam, and great-niece Molly; nephew, Ryan Poovey, his wife Leslie, great-nephew Josh, and great-niece Taylor; sister-in-law, Miriam Poovey and husband Bill; and loving aunts and cousins from his family.

He was a graduate of Auburn University with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering. He was also a Licensed Professional Engineer and certified safety professional. He retired after 33 years with Eastman Chemical Company.  While there, he served on numerous professional committees and community boards.

Mr. Middleton was President of the Northeast Tennessee Civil War Roundtable and Secretary of the Anderson County Civil War Roundtable.  He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.  He was a member of South Carolina Military Miniature Society and has participated in Civil War Living history for 25 years.

Mr. Middleton was an avid supporter of Auburn Athletics.  He was a dedicated historical researcher and enjoyed designing and making miniature soldiers. He enjoyed adventurous travels all over the world.

Mr. Middleton was a member of New Fellowship Ministries Baptist Church in Church Hill, TN and attended Providence Baptist Church in Anderson.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Michael Kinard. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the residence.

ANDERSON, SC - Elzora Adams, age 80, wife of the late Billy Ray Adams, passed away on Sunday, July 07, 2013, at AnMed Health Medical Center. 

Born in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late James Henry Adams and the late Mittie Locke Adams.  Mrs. Adams was a homemaker and a member of  Zion United Methodist Church. 

She is survived by her children: son, Dennis Adams and his wife, Debbie; daughter, Jennifer Coats and her husband, Wayne, all of Anderson, SC; grandchildren: Aprile Adams and George Tenney, Jenilyn and Matthew Mulkey, Alan and Merebeth Adams, and Adam and Kaileigh Coats; great grandchildren:  Brayden Mulkey, Grayson Mulkey, and Abigail Tenney; sister, Sylvene Dilliingham.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 6 brothers and 2 sisters.

The Graveside Service will be held on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 4:00 PM , at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Reverend Bob Carlisle and Dr. Shawn Armstrong officiating.  The family will receive friends  Monday, July 8, 2013, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at 709 Whitehall Road, Anderson, SC.

DORIS VIRGINIA SMITH SORROW

October 19, 1935 – July 3, 2013 

FAIRFAX, VA - Doris Virginia Smith Sorrow, age 87, of Fairfax, VA, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 in Fairfax.

Born in Greenwood, SC, she was the daughter of the late George Davis Smith and the late Annie Mae Beasley Smith.  She was a graduate of Girls High in Anderson, SC. Mr. and Mrs. Sorrow started First Impressions Ministry at their church, Calvary Road Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA, where she was also an adopted grandmother to many little children.

She is survived by her children, Carl F. Sorrow, Jr. and his wife Sandi of Fairfax, VA, Terry Sorrow of Louisville, KY; Ann Morton and her husband DJ of Louisville, KY; a daughter-in-law, Roberta Sorrow, of Belton, SC; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Carl F. Sorrow, Sr.; a son, Mike Sorrow; a brother, James D. Smith; and three sisters, Evelyn Brady, Grace E. Lee and Jean Sherrill.

The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 8, 2013, at 3:30 PM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Alex Henderson officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  The family will be at the home of Roberta Sorrow, 5488 Belton Hwy, Belton, SC 29627 and will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 1:30 PM until 3:15 PM.

JAN FREEMAN

JUNE 3, 1951 – JULY 3, 2013
ANDERSON, SC - Janice “Jan” Hembree Freeman, age 62, wife of Ricky Delano Freeman, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at AnMed Medical Health Center, surrounded by her loving family.

Jan was born in Greenville, SC; she was the daughter of the late Roland William Hembree and Evelyn Lynch Hembree. She was a graduate of Parker High School.  Jan was a homemaker and independent business women.  She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church, she was dedicated to the youth and children department, with her love for the youth, she had helped prepare numerous meals unselfishly for those upcoming trips. Those who knew her, knew of her love she had for her family and friends, Jan was their rock & support, but she especially enjoyed her 3 year old granddaughter, Bella. One of Jan’s greatest enjoyments was camping; she loved watching the sunrise and the sunset.

In addition to her mother and husband, Jan is survived by her three daughters whom she loved dearly; Kristi Freeman, Shea Jordan and her husband, Jon and Gina Freeman all of Anderson; one granddaughter and the apple of her eye, Bella Jordan; brother, Don Hembree of Greenville; two sisters, Lynn Justice and Peggy Atkins both of Greenville; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Bill Hembree.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at 3:00 pm at New Prospect Baptist Church in the Contemporary Sanctuary, with Dr. Tony Smith and Reverend Tom Turner officiating.  The family will receive friends in the Prospector Room on Sunday before the service from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm.  The family will be at the home of her daughter, Shea Jordan.
