Barbara Ann Black Stallsworth

Anderson, SC - Barbara Ann Black Stallsworth, age 71, wife of Edward Brian Stallsworth, passed away on Friday, September 12, 2014.

Born on December 27, 1942, in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Troy Black and the late Helen Margaret Barrett Stewart.

She is survived by her husband Edward Brian Stallsworth; two sisters, Shelby Sullivan and Charlotte Reed. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

The Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Mountain Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Billy Ray Whitfield officiating.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will be at the home of her nephew, Carl Davenport, 330 Cherry Dr., Anderson, SC and will receive friends at the church from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to ALS Association.

Marianne Carr Roberts

Pendleton, SC - Marianne Carr Roberts, 77, widow of Harold Jerome Roberts, died Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at her residence.

Born November 29, 1936 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Richard Coleman and Agnes Noffsinger Carr. She was a homemaker and a member of the Electric City Garden Club. Mrs. Roberts was a member of Welcome Baptist Church and the W.M.U. of the church.

Survivors include her son, Gregory C. Roberts and wife, Debbie of Wadley, Alabama; her daughter, Molly Roberts of Anderson; three grandchildren, Michelle Ferrel and husband, Brett of Chelsea, Alabama, James Richard Roberts and wife, Courtney of Piedmont, and Rhianna Roberts Rule and husband, Clif of Flowery Branch, Georgia; three great grandchildren, Corin Ferrel, Quinton Ferrel, and Addison Rule; and a brother, Richard W. Carr and wife, Peggy of Hampstead, NC.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Ann Roberts.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, September 12, 2014 at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by William R. West, Jr. and Hugh Burgess. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Central Time, Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Hillview Memorial Park, Alexander City, Alabama. The family will receive friends following the service Friday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson.

Gordon J. Hooker

Lake Secession, SC - Gordon John Hooker, 85, died Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

He was born in Cheektowaga, New York on June 28, 1929. He was a veteran of five wars including Venezuela, Portugal, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1944-1957 and the U.S. Air Force from 1957-1970. He was wounded in the Korean War and the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, along with many other medals and awards. He retired January 1, 1970 after 26 years of outstanding military service.

His passion was fishing, from the West Coast to the East Coast, on any lake during his travels with his kayak boats. He earned several degrees including his Doctorate Degree from San Bernardino State University. Throughout his life he enjoyed meeting new people and joking about meeting “Happy Hooker”. He valued his wide circle of friends and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and the V.F.W.

Survivors include his wife of 64 ½ years, Ruby K. Hooker; his daughter, Mary C. Hooker-Groves and husband, Michael A. Groves; son, Gordon Dwayne Hooker and wife, Mary L. Hooker; six grandchildren, Joseph M. Billingsley and wife, Bobbi J. Billingsley, Ross A. Billingsley, Patrick M. Groves, Jason L. Pierce, Todd J. Pierce, and Tabitha D. Pierce; and three great grandchildren, Jalen Johnson, Kaleb M. Billingsley and Cambria J. Billingsley.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 25, 2014 at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday, August 24, at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson.

Peggy Edwins Anderson

Pendleton - Peggy Edwins Anderson, 76, wife of James E. “Jim” Anderson, died Thursday, August 21, 2014 at Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor, Florida.

Born August 20, 1938 in Orangeburg, she was the daughter of the late Elliott and Annie Lou McElhannon Edwins. She was a member of Pendle ton First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jim of the home; two daughters, Kim Anderson Burgess and husband, Rickey of Pendleton; LuAnne Anderson Newton and husband, Michael of Safety Harbor, Florida; her granddaughter, with whom she shared a very special bond, Courtney Newton of Safety Harbor, Florida; brother, Richard Edwins and wife, Diane of Clinton; sister, Connie Reid and husband, Craig of Walterboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Pendleton First Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Courtney Krueger, Rev. Jennifer Rygg and Rev. Harry Girtman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson.

Carol Jane Garnier

Townville, SC - Carol Jane Bryant Garnier, age 67, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at her residence.

Born in Elbert County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Charles Harold Bryant and the late Martha Elera Wallace Bryant Simmons.  She retired from Delta Airlines as an Internal Overseas Auditor.  She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sisterhood and the Red Hatters Society of Dickson Memorial United Methodist Church and active with Senior Solutions. Carol was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, Sonja Payne Reed, of Seneca, SC; Jeffery Haskell Payne, of Seneca, SC and Wesley Payne (Christina), of Canton, GA; sisters, Annette Bryant Singleton, of Bowman, GA, Brenda Bryant Deal, of Martin, GA, and Debra Bryant Labenburg, of Anderson, SC; four grandchildren, Whitney Burton (Chris), Morgan Reed, Michael Payne, and Nicholas Payne; one great-granddaughter, Caroline Jane Burton; her lifetime companion, Jeffrey Winkler; and her faithful furry companions, her dogs, Shadow, Perseus, Triton, and Sparky and cat, Venus.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Anthony “Tony” Bryant, Darell Bryant and Arnie Bryant; and her special friend, Jane Kameoka.

The Memorial Service will be held at Calvary Church of God in Westminster, on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. with Reverend Tray Brown officiating.  The family will gather for a time of visitation following the service at the church.

Jean Brown

Anderson, SC - Wilma Jean Willis Brown, age 70, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2014, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in LaFrance, SC, on August 15, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Jefferson T. Willis and the late Ruby Head Willis.  She worked for over 20 years at J.P. Stevens and retired from Ingles Grocery Store.  She was a member of LaFrance Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, Lori Brown Crenshaw and her husband Stan, and Jeff Brown, all of Anderson; four grandchildren, Nick Crenshaw (Janel), Kathryn Crenshaw Moore (Cameron), Jerry Edward Franklin Brown, and Jefferson Tilman “J.T.” Brown; a great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Moore; three brothers, Tilman Willis (Audrey) and Nolan Willis (Whitney), of Anderson, SC and Ray Willis, of Sandy Springs, SC; three sisters, Louise Haggerty (Willie), of Sandy Springs, SC, Beatrice Rollins (Billy), of Pendleton, SC, and Pat Gaines (Mike), of Anderson, SC; daughter-in-law, Melissa Hill; and a brother-in-law, Arthur Roper.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry F. Brown; brothers, Jones E. “Bud” Willis (Brenda) and J. Robert Willis; and sisters, Shirley Whitman (James) and Edna Roper.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Thursday, August 21, 2014 from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m.  The Funeral Service will follow in the chapel at 2:00 p.m. with Chaplain Damion Hutchins and Reverend Gene Burdette officiating.  Interment will follow at Memory Gardens in Clemson, SC.

Marian Masters Campbell

Anderson, SC - Marian Masters Campbell, age 95, died Monday, August 18, 2014 at NHC of Anderson.

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Marshall K. and Una P. Masters. She is survived by her sons, Lawrence T. Campbell (Lebrena) and Masters Campbell; and two granddaughters, Carly and Lawren Campbell.

Marian was predeceased by three sisters, Alice Pope Masters and twins, Doris Masters and Dorothy Masters Sullivan.

Marian was a graduate of Winthrop College and taught in Anderson Schools before becoming a homemaker and mother. She was a communicant of Grace Episcopal Church.

Later in life, Marian transformed and operated Masters Country Store for over 25 years. The store was started by her father around 1917.

Marian had a full and enjoyable life in her decorated residences on Moultrie Square and Lake Hartwell. She enjoyed the company of many friends young and old and was especially fond of Hal Ainsworth and Winton Noah of Atlanta, Georgia and her trusted helper, James Calvin Harris of Anderson.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of the caregivers over the last five years, including the staff of Summer House and NHC of Anderson.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday under the Bell Tower at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Robert C. Crawford

Anderson, SC - Robert C. “Bob” Crawford, age 80, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2014 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born March 30, 1934 in Syracuse, NY, Bob was the son of the late Melvin B. Crawford and the late Norma Tappen Crawford.  He was a graduate of Morrisville State College, Morrisville, NY.  Bob proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.  He was involved in the American Legion, a volunteer at the Anderson Free Clinic and enjoyed bowling in various leagues.

Bob is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Bennett Crawford, his 7 loving children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and his springer spaniel, Buddy.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 7:00 PM at Grace Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, Anderson, SC.

Mary Ann Van Deusen

Anderson, SC - Mary Ann Van Deusen, age 92, passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2014, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born March 15, 1922 in New Bedford, MA, she was the daughter of the late Manuel T. Sousa and the late Mary P. Gomes-Camacho Sousa.  She received a degree from Anderson College and worked for many years at the Social Security Administration until her retirement.  She was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she was Past President of the Women’s Club and was given the honor of Catholic Woman of the Year.  Mary Ann was an avid gardener and belonged to the garden club and various other community clubs.  The legacy that she will leave is the generosity she shared with her community.

She is survived by her children, Noah Carl “Butch” Gibson, II and his wife Claudia, of Anderson, SC and Carol Gibson Bragg, of Green Valley, AZ; one grandson, Noah Hudson Bragg and his wife Emily and their daughter, Layla Catherine Bragg; three brothers, John, Joe and Frank Sousa; two sisters, Loretta Harrington and Katie Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, MSGT Noah C. Gibson; her second husband, Andrew Van Deusen; one brother and three sisters.

The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Monday, August 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Ignatius Smith, OFM officiating.  A private committal will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Sunday, August 10, 2014 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a prayer service beginning at 5:30 pm.

Eleanor Martin Ross

Anderson, SC - Eleanor Martin Ross, 92, died Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at NHC of Anderson.

Born June 29, 1922 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late John Baylis and Emeline Whitaker Martin. She was a graduate of Pendleton High School. Mrs. Ross served as Women’s Director at the YMCA for a number of years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her children, Jack (Louie) Ross and wife, Pam, Don Ross, John B. Ross and wife, Judy, Alice Emeline Maggalousis and husband, Foti, and James Ross; six grandchildren, John B. Ross, Jr., Mary Beth Wright, Josh Ross, Dusty Ross, Karaline Maggalousis and Chloe Maggalousis; two great grandchildren, Hartley Ross and Baylis Wright; one sister, Rebecca Martin Browder; and one brother, Dr. John B. Martin, Jr.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah M. Porter and Doris M. Wright; a brother, Dr. Henry C. Martin; and her former husband, Jack Ross, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 7, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. Dennis Tedder. Burial will be at the Martin Family Cemetery in Liberty prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service. Family members are at their respective homes.

Lee Tate

Anderson, SC - Belinda Lee Katonak Tate, 56, wife of Jimmy Tate, died Saturday, August 2, 2014 at her residence.

Born July 7, 1958 in Aiken, SC, she was the daughter of Paul Richard and Lynne Hartley Katonak.  She was a graduate of Clemson University, class of 1980, and was an accountant with Southern Concrete and Construction Co. Lee was active in her community, having served as PTA President at Concord Elementary School and McCants Middle School. She served as President of Anderson Junior League in 1998 and was a charter member of the Anderson Area Clemson Club where she currently served as secretary. For 13 years, she taught 2 and 3 year olds in the Pre-School at Central Presbyterian Church. Lee was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for a number of years.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Jimmy Tate of the home; son, Tommy Tate and wife, Caroline of Anderson; daughter, Jenny Tate of Atlanta; parents, Paul and Lynne Katonak of Aiken; sister, Wendy Fitzgerald and husband, Dennis of Aiken; brother, Brian Katonak and wife, Carrie of Aiken; mother-in-law, Betty B. Tate of Anderson; and brother-in-law, Patrick Tate and wife, Laura of Raleigh, NC.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Tommy Tate.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at St. John's United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dan Batson. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary. The family is at the residence.

Reverend George Floyd Hopkins, Sr.

Anderson, SC - Reverend George Floyd Hopkins, Sr., age 87, husband of Doris Crain Hopkins, with whom he had just celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary on June 24th 2014, passed away on Friday, August 1, 2014 at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Born in Franklin, NC on June 1, 1927 he was the son of the late James Russell Hopkins and the late Julia Ensley Hopkins.  He served in the Merchant Marines from 1945 – 1947.  At the age of 20 he started his work in Ministry as an Ordained Minister.  His ministry includes: 16 years at Orrville Pentecostal Holiness Church in Anderson, SC; Laurens Pentecostal Holiness Church; Wellington Pentecostal Holiness Church in Anderson, SC; Ninety-Six Pentecostal Holiness Church; Sandy Springs Pentecostal Church; McNeely Pentecostal Holiness Church and 10 years at Homes Memorial Church, with over 70 years of total ministry in the IPHC. He was also a retired school teacher having taught for 20 years at McCants Middle School and Crescent High School.  Mr. Hopkins acquired a Bachelors’ Degree from USC and did post graduate work at Furman University.  When he was younger, he loved to fish on Lake Hartwell and was an avid wild bird watcher.

Survivors include his wife; son, G. Floyd Hopkins, Jr. and his wife Mandy of Anderson, SC; daughter, Sharon Anise Hopkins of Anderson, SC; brothers, Sam Hopkins of Osprey, FL, and Danny Hopkins of Mulberry, FL; sisters, Elaine Feagle of Winter Haven, FL, Peggy Gilreath, of North Wilkesboro, NC and Sue Hendren of Moravian Falls, NC; three grandchildren, Russell Hopkins, Courtney Merritt and Lauren Merritt; four great-grandchildren; Jayden, Trinity, Natalee and Nolan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Bill, Everette, Dean and Beacham Hopkins; sister, Laverne Phillips.

The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, August 4, 2014 at 3:00 pm at The Taylor Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church with Dr. Brent Lollis, Reverend Lawrence Johnson and Bishop Ray Boggs and Rev. Eddie Duncan officiating.  Entombment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will be at their residence and will receive friends at the church from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm prior to the service.
