PAULA DOWDY

DECEMBER 17, 1961 – OCTOBER 9, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Paula Alene Dowdy, age 49, of 502 Sussex Way, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2011.

Born December 17, 1961, in Anderson County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Larry Joe Brown and Ada Hoffman. She was a graduate of Pendleton High School and Tri-County Technical College. Mrs. Dowdy was a fabric designer having formerly been employed by Santen and Mt. Vernon Mills.  She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Carlton Dowdy of the home; son, Ryan Edward Dowdy of the home; daughter, Brandi LeeAnn Manly of Sandy Springs, SC; sister, Denise Clark of Anderson, SC; brother, Brian Brown of Anderson, SC; stepsister, Rhonda Edwards of Atlanta, GA  and two grandchildren: Cally Elizabeth Simpson and Jacey AnnaBeth Manly.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3pm on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Steve Silvey.  In keeping with Mrs. Dowdy’s wishes, her remains will be cremated following the funeral service.

The family is at the home and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7pm until 9pm on Tuesday.

MAE F. O’PRY PHELAN

March 30, 1947 – October 9, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC - Mae Frances O’Pry Phelan, age 64, wife of David Watson Phelan of 203 Windemere Way, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at the AnMed Health Medical Center. 

Born in Griffin, GA on March 30, 1947, Mrs. Phelan was a daughter of the late Henry C. O’Pry and Elizabeth Ruby Dubose O’Pry.  She served four years in the United States Army and met her husband while serving in Ft. Bragg, NC.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who had a passion for life and was an excellent cook, artist and had interest in fashion.  She was of the Christian Faith.  

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, David Watson Phelan of the home; daughter, Laurie Elizabeth Bowen of Anderson; brother, Henry O’Pry, Jr., and his wife, Sandra of Athens, GA; sister, Carol Phillips of Boca Raton, FL; two grandchildren, Brianna Leigh Bowen and Jessie James Holliday, both of the home.  

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 11:00 am in The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel.

DONALD BARR SHAVER  

FEBRUARY 23, 1930 – OCTOBER 7, 2011

WILLIAMSTON, SC – Donald Shaver, age 81, of Williamston, SC, died on October 7, 2011 at AnMed Health Medical Center.   

Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Roscoe Guy Shaver and Martha Barr Shaver.  Don is survived by his sister, Margaret S. Stone, of Peoria, IL and by his two sons, Scott and Bill Shaver of Chicago, IL; his friend and companion, Linda Hoffman of Anderson, SC; 6 grandchildren, Michael, Steve, and Natalie and Jeremy, Charlie, and Miranda, all of Chicago, IL. 

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Harrup Shaver. 

After graduating from Bradley University, Don served in the Marines for 7 years.  He was a captain and fought in the Korean conflict.  He retired from the Ryerson Steel Company.    He served as a Scout Master with the Boys Scouts of America.  He was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church.   Also as a member of Senior Solutions in Anderson, Don enjoyed many activities and friends there.

Funeral Services will be held at Grace Church on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 1:00 pm with Father John B. Hardaway, IV and Father Tom Davis officiating.   After the interment of ashes in the Memorial Garden at Grace, a reception will be held in the Parlor for family and friends.   

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Good Shepherd Campaign Fund of Grace Church, 711 S. McDuffie St., Anderson, SC  29624.

CW4 (Retired) JACKIE L. PHILLIPS

DECEMBER 4, 1945 – OCTOBER 7, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Jackie L. Phillips, age 65, of 2538 Belhaven Road, passed away on Friday, October 7, 2011, at AnMed Health Center, Anderson, SC.

Born in Anderson, MO, on December 4, 1945, he was a son of the late UV Edward Phillips and Carol (Phillips) Murphy. He was retired from First Flight as an EMS helicopter pilot, where his skills saved countless lives.  Jackie also served 24 years in the U.S. Army as Chief Warrant Officer 4.  He served in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm.  

He is survived by his wife of the home, Pamela Hyde Phillips; daughters, Melissa Pridemore, and her husband Chris of Anderson, SC and Jennifer Leahy, and her husband Bill of Ocala, FL; his mother, Carol (Phillips) Murphy of Miami, OK; sisters, Carolyn Blankenship, and her husband Ernie of Fairlane, OK and Donna Benson, and her husband John of Broken Arrow, OK; brothers, Edward Phillips and his wife Laura of Jonesville, TX and Curtis Phillips, and his wife Ann of Tulsa, OK.   Jackie also leaves behind eight precious grandchildren and one great grandchild to cherish his memory.

A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Jackie Phillips will be held at a later date in his hometown, Miami, OK.

TERESA KAY GAINES  

November 19, 1959 – October 3, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Teresa Kay Gaines, age 51, of 2122 Middleton Road, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Clinton, SC, Teresa was the daughter of Shelby Oswalt Mays and the late Ray Carlisle.  She is survived by her daughters, Melissa Brock and Bunnie Gaines of Anderson; brother, Dale South of Joanna, SC; five grandchildren, Carlton Gillian, Tony and Matt Abernathy, Destiny and Alex Powell. 

A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 11:00 am at Iva City Cemetery, officiated by the Reverend Sam Duncan.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

JOHNNY PETRATOS  

ANDERSON, SC – John A. Petratos, age 51, of Anderson, SC, died October 2, 2011, at his home surrounded by family. 

He was born in Greenville, SC, and was the owner and operator of Slabtown Variety Store.

Surviving are his wife, Susie N. Petratos; son, Austin; daughter, Alexis, all of Anderson, SC; mother, Ntina Petratos of Greenville, SC; sisters: Nickie Petratos of Chicago, IL, and Susanna Petratos of Greenville, SC; brother, Tommy Petratos of Easley, SC.  He was the son of the late Andreas Petratos.    

The family will receive friends from 6pm until 8pm on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at The McDougald Funeral Home. A Memorial Service honoring Johnny’s life will be at 4pm on Thursday, October 6, at Concord Baptist Church.

DOROTHY S. STRICKLAND

July 6, 1919 – October 3, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Dorothy “Dot” Stoddard Strickland, age 92, wife of Wilbur Edwin Strickland of 421 Tanglewood Drive, passed away on Monday, October 03, 2011 at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Gray Court, SC on July 6, 1919, Mrs. Strickland was a daughter of the late Coyt D. Stoddard and Mary Stoddard.  She worked for many years in the textile industry and later retired from Dow Badische.  She was a member of North Anderson Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of the home, she is survived by her son, Keith Strickland; daughter-in-law, Jeri Strickland; grandson, Steve Strickland and his wife, Jill and their daughter, Rebecca Strickland all of Anderson.

She was predeceased by her son, Wilbur Eugene Strickland; her grandson, Jason Strickland; two brothers and two sisters.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.  The Funeral Service will begin at 2:00 pm in the Chapel officiated by the Reverend Bill Rigsby.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

ANDERSON, SC – Cortney Dawn Kidd, age 37, of Anderson passed away on October 1, 2011, at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, SC, on August 4, 1974, she was the daughter of Cathie Bridges Davis and her husband Lee.  She attended New Springs.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her son, Dylon Harward of Anderson, SC and her sister, Crystal Kidd Arnold of Anderson, SC.

BETTY L. PARTON

June 9, 1946 – September 29, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC - Betty Lou Hughes Parton, age 65,of 202 Wren Way, passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House and is resting in the arms of her Saviour.  She lost the battle against breast cancer after fighting with all her being.   

Her deepest regrets were leaving behind her spouse of 49 years, Jack Parton; her two daughters, Teresa Parton-Lopes (John) of Belchertown, MA and Susan Parton Wright (Robert) of Anderson and her son, Jack Parton, Jr., (Amanda) of Dallas, GA.  Also, she leaves behind her precious grandchildren: Jennifer Parton Harper (Zeke) and Jacqueline Parton of Bluffton, SC; Griffin Wright and Sarah Wright of Anderson and Sean, Adam, and Noah Lopes of Belchertown, MA.  Her brothers, Delbert Hughes (Barbara) of Steinhatchee, FL and Larry Hughes (Ann) of Anderson and a sister, Norma Jean Koon of Anderson.  She leaves behind her special family at Special Populations and Area 14 Special Olympics and a number of nieces and nephews. 

She is preceded in death by her parents; William Shirley and Rosa Lee Evans Hughes; a sister,  Myra Ellen Hughes; her grandparents, Ottie and Pearl Kinley Evans and William H. and Mattie Crawford Hughes.   

Betty retired from AnMed Health Medical Center where she worked as a nurse in ICU and Endoscopy.  She served ten years in the United States Army Reserves and is a member of the Reserve Officers ASSO and SC Nurse’s Association. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Piedmont District.   

She was a member of Temple Baptist Church where she was a member of the Senior Adult Class. 

Funeral Services will be held in The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 2:00 pm and conducted by the Reverend Gordon Taylor and Reverend Chad Gamble.   

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday, October 3, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. 

Burial will be in the M. J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery. 

Flowers will be accepted but in lieu of flowers, make donations to Area 14 Special Olympics, P.O. Box 1049, Anderson, SC 29626 or Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.

The family would like to give a special thanks to all the employees of Cancer Centers of the Carolinas (Seneca), Dr. Jeffery Guigere, Dr. David Bush, Melissa Saxon CNP, Stacie Parkhurst CNP, Dr. Andres Allyn, Dr. Paul Fressinelli and Dr. James Foster for the loving care they provided our Mom in her courageous fight against cancer.

BECKY H. KEASLER

JANUARY 2, 1964 – SEPTEMBER 30, 2011

PENDLETON, SC - Becky Hatman Keasler, age 47, of 2313 Lebanon Road, wife of Gary Alan Keasler, passed away on Friday, September 30, 2011, at the Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Paris, Tennessee on January 2, 1964, she was a daughter of Jesse Odell Hatman and Anzonetta Ross Hatman.  She grew up in Paris, Tennessee and graduated from the Henry County High School before entering the U.S. Air Force.  She was a homemaker and was of the Church of Christ faith. 

In addition to her parents and husband she is survived by her two children: Colton Keasler and Cayce Keasler of the home, sister, Lenette Pinchback of Tennessee, and two brothers: Noel Hatman of Tennessee, and Doug Hatman of Texas.

The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, October 3, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Lebanon Baptist Church officiated by Reverend Harry Warren.  Interment will follow in Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery.  . 

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Sunday, October 2, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.  Mrs. Keasler will be place in the church at 1:00 pm on Monday.

RICHARD C. OSTEEN

JANUARY 19, 1954 – SEPTEMBER 26, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Richard Carroll ‘PeeWee’ Osteen, age 57, resident of 112 Bleckley Street, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2011.

Born in Anderson, SC, on January 19, 1954, he was a son of the late Marion Vincent Osteen and Lillian Chapman Osteen. He was a graduate of McDuffie High School and Clemson University. During his lengthy career as an Industrial Engineer, he resided in Huntsville, AL, and Perry, GA. He was currently employed by Wal-Mart and was a lifelong member of St. John’s United Methodist Church.  Mr. Osteen had a love for photography, cooking, reading, and animals.

Survivors include his siblings: The Reverend Lillie Ann Osteen Lindsey of Greenwood, SC, Marion Chapman ‘Buck’ Osteen of Killeen, TX, and Wm. Michael Osteen of Charlotte, NC.  

A Memorial Service will be held at 3pm on Saturday, October 1, 2011, in the Chapel of St. John’s United Methodist Church conducted by the Reverend Dan Batson.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

CHARLES MARTIN BLANCH, SR.  

March 25, 1933 – September 26, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Charles “Chuck” Martin Blanch, Sr., of 106 Cara Court, died Monday, September 26, 2011 at his residence.

Born in Baltimore, MD on March 25, 1933, Mr. Blanch was a son of the late Martin James Blanch and Anna K. Buresch Blanch.  He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and also served in the Army Reserves.  Mr. Blanch was formerly employed with General Electric, Proctor Silex and retired from General Motors as a tool & dye maker.

Survivors include his children; Dennis Blanch of York, PA, Michael Blanch, Beverly Sloman, Charles Blanch and James Blanch, all of Baltimore, MD;  his loving companion, Rose Holt of Anderson and  12 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Anna Louise Randall Blanch and a brother, James Blanch.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at 4:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home.
