RACHEL E. MORRISON

GREENVILLE - Rachel Evans Morrison, 85, of 2 Empress Drive, formerly of Bradley Park, Anderson, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at the Sterling House in Greer.

Born September 7, 1927 in Pomeroy, OH, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Charlotte Thomas Evans. Rachel was a graduate of Holzer Hospital and was a Pediatric Registered Nurse before becoming a faithful wife and full time mother to her 3 sons. She was also a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Anderson. 

Surviving are her husband, Carlos T. Morrison of the home; 3 sons, John Morrison (Michelle) of Greenville, Richard Morrison (Jandell) of Winston Salem and Norman Morrison (Sheri) of Taylors; 5 granddaughters, Magee, Lacey, Macaulay, Caroline Morrison and Hillary (Clif) Salter; one great grandchild on the way; sister, Clara Haskins of Gallipolis, OH and her beloved dog, Bootsie. 

Funeral service will be held at 2pm Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary with Rev. Dan Batson officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2pm Saturday prior to the service at Sullivan-King Mortuary, 3205 N Hwy 81. The family is at their respective homes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, 515 S McDuffie St, Anderson, SC 29624.

DALE W. VICKERY

April 13, 1950 – December 6, 2012

ANDERSON, SC - Dale William Vickery, age 62, of 2008 Old Spring Drive, Anderson, passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at his residence surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Hartwell, GA, he was the son of James Robert Vickery, Sr. of Bowersville, GA and the late Sara Weaver Vickery. 

Dale earned an Associate’s Degree in Engineering from North Georgia Technical School. He was the owner and operator of Vickery Speed Shop which sold racing parts and equipment.  He was a member of NHRA Drag Racing and a member of World of Outlaws Racing.  He was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. 

In addition to his father, he is survived by his daughters, Katie V. Moore and her husband Scott of Anderson and Keri Elizabeth Vickery and her fiancé Michael Schmitz of Anderson;  a sister, Susan Fleming and her husband David of Cannon, GA; three grandchildren, Allee Moore, Cole Vickery and Tanner Schmitz all of Anderson; his devoted and beloved fiancé Terri Campbell of the residence; and his extended grandchildren, Lex Newby, Payton Burleson and Gage Campbell. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Robert Vickery, Jr. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 3:30 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverends David Blizzard and Tim Marcengill officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at the funeral home.

BARTON POWELL

December 8, 1925 – December 5, 2012

TOWNVILLE, SC - Barton Tinsley Powell, age 86, of Townville, SC, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at his residence.

Born in the Mt. Tabor community of Anderson County, he was a son of the late Jim G. Powell and the late Zury Standridge Powell.  He was the superintendent at Forest Lawn Memorial Park for over 25 years.  He also retired from the City of Anderson.  After his retirement, he opened a lawn mower repair shop out of his home.  He was an avid gardener.  Barton was a member of Whitfield Pentecostal Holiness Church. 

He is survived by his loving wife, of the home, Dezerie Weaver Powell; his children, Pat Pitcher and her husband Ken of Greenville, SC, Nancy Flint and her husband Lonnie of Flower, WV, Darlene Vernon and her husband Ricky of Anderson, Steven Powell of Anderson, Greg Powell of Anderson and Mary Ward of Wilmington, NC; his step-children, Calvin Williams and his wife Barbara of Wacksaw, NC, Terry Idaho of Anderson, SC, Rachel Smith and her husband Berry of Townville, SC and Paul Williams, Jr. and Allijean of Athens, GA; a brother, Clarence “Pete” Powell of Anderson; 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Sanders, Jim, Melvin, Jack, Clint and Sam Powell and four sisters, Lena White, Lula Cheek, Rebecca Evelular and Maguetta Powell. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Dr. Frank Whitfield officiating.  Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.  The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm.

RICHIE AYERS

ANDERSON - Richard Edgar Ayers, 41, of 1429 Grady Hall Road, died Monday, December 3, 2012.

Born March 13, 1971 in Anderson, he was the son of Willie Brock Ayers and the late Casey O. Ayers, Sr. He was a former employee of American Security.

Survivors include his mother of the home; two brothers, Ronnie Ayers and Christopher Dale Ayers; two sisters, Rebecca Ann Murphy and Rachel Elizabeth Ayers; and grandfather, Willis Samuel Ayers, all of Anderson.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Casey O. Ayers, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson conducted by Dr. Kirt Mitchell. The family will receive friends at the mortuary following the service.

MARY FRANCES HARE  

February 14, 1925 – December 3, 2012 

CLEMSON, SC - Mary Frances Hare, age 87, of Clemson Downs, Clemson, SC, passed away at her residence on Monday, December 3, 2012. Born in Townville, SC, she was a daughter of the late Joe Berry Broyles and the late Joe Ann Broyles.  She was the loving and devoted wife of over 50 years to the late James Wright Hare, Jr. until his death in 2001.  She was a homemaker and an enthusiastic flower gardener.  She particularly loved her roses.  Mary was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mary is survived by a sister, Margaret Broyles Pruitt of Townville, SC; a nephew, Joe Broyles Pruitt, Sr. of Savannah, GA; and a great-nephew, Joe Broyles Pruitt, Jr. of Katy, TX.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Nash Broyles.

The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 3:00 pm with Reverend Paul Frey officiating.  Interment will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery.  The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm.

ALVIS R. KERNELS

ANDERSON – Alvis Roy Kernels, Jr.,  81, of Anderson, husband of Patricia Kernels, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2012 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born November 21, 1931 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Alvis R. Kernels, Sr. and the late Gladys Kinnett Kernels. He was a roofing contractor and member of First Baptist of Anderson. He was a member of Hiram Lodge #68 A.F.M. and the Hejaz Shriners.

Surviving are his wife, Pat Kernels of the home; 2 sons, Jay and Scott Kernels; daughter, Sylvia Brown; step-daughter, Sydney Brown; daughter-in-law, Tracy Kernels all of Anderson; step-son, John Van Blaricom and his wife, Dianne of Franklin, KY; 11 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter and brother, Bobby Ray Kernels of Gastonia. Alvis was preceded in death by his son, Tony Kernels and brother, Paul Kernels.

A private service will be held at a later date.

DOROTHY McCLAIN BUSBY

STARR - Dorothy McClain Busby, 97, longtime resident of Starr, died Friday, November 30, 2012 at National Health Care in Anderson. 

Born March 22, 1915 in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late C. Earle and Oria Bolt McClain. She graduated from Anderson Girls High School in 1932. In 1937 she married James Tillman Busby, a marriage of 55 years until his death in 1992. 

She was a member of Starr Baptist Church where she was an active member of the Philathea Sunday School Class and the Missionary Prayer Group as long as her health permitted. She was a devoted homemaker, talented seamstress and cook. She retired from Starr Mills, and after retirement was a carrier for delivering Meals on Wheels. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. 

She is survived by her children, Nancy Sherer (Joe) and Jim Busby, Jr. (Bennie) of Starr and Ruth McCurry (Rick) of Hartwell, GA; nine grandchildren, Nan Sherer Campbell (Dr. Kenneth), Chip Sherer (Cynthia), Ken Busby (Terry), Kristie Busby Whitfield (Tim), Kevin Busby (Brenda), Scott Templeton (Lisa), Laura Templeton Burns (Steve), Rev. Mac McCurry (Andrea), and Walt McCurry (Candee); 17 great grandchildren; four sisters, Kathryn Sorrow and Deree Dickerson of Anderson, Selwyn Tingen of Piedmont, and Oria Balchin of Graham, NC; and one brother, William McClain of Anderson. 

She was predeceased by a daughter, Martha Templeton and her husband, Robert of Grand Junction, TN; sister, Olga Sain of Memphis, TN; and brothers, George, Robert, Calvin, and Bevin McClain of Anderson and David McClain of Easley. 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 3, at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Tony Howell, Chip Sherer, and Rev. Mac McCurry. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home of a daughter, Nancy and Joe Sherer, 118 McCoy Drive, Starr.

CHARLES E. McALISTER

ANDERSON - Charles Edward McAlister, 81, of Wexford Drive, died Friday, November 30, 2012 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born January 30, 1931 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Paul T. and Eva G. Black McAlister. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and was a retired letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. McAlister was a lifetime member of the D.A.V. and was a member of Pope Drive Baptist Church. 

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Brown McAlister of the home; three sons, Mike McAlister of Anderson, Steve McAlister of Townville, and Phillip McAlister and wife, Donna of Anderson; grandsons, Austin McAlister and Cody Evesque; step-grandson, Jeremy McCoy; great grandson, Chance McCoy; and two sisters, Eunice Aiken of Simpsonville and Betty McLees of Anderson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Paul, Clarence, James, Calvin, Hugh, and Gene McAlister and sisters, Evelyn Coster and Catherine Taylor.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Sullivan-King Mortuary conducted by Dr. Mack Tester and Phillip McAlister.. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military honors provided by the Campbell Patriots Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at their respective homes.

GAYLE SANDERS CANN

May 7, 1946 – November 29, 2012

Mrs. Gayle Sanders Cann, age 66, of 114 Gary Road, entered into her Heavenly home on Thursday, November 29, 2012, when she passed away at AnMed Health Medical Center, surrounded by the love of her family.  Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late Robert Cody Sanders and the late Eula Cox Sanders.  For forty five years until her death, she was the loving and devoted wife of Gary T. Cann of the residence.

Gayle attended T. L. Hanna High School and graduated from Forrest College with an associate’s degree in the paralegal field.  During her professional career, she was a guardian ad litem, a role in which she was an advocate for disadvantaged children within the court system.  In that role, she had a profound impact on the lives of many young people who perhaps did not have a voice.  Mrs. Cann was a very unselfish and giving person who truly put others before self.  She loved her family dearly and was devoted to her daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren.  Gayle was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church.

Survivors left to carry on her legacy in addition to her loving husband, Gary, are her 4 daughters, Dawn Owens, her husband Michael, of Pendleton; Michelle Gambrell and husband Brian, of Starr; Gloria Cann of Central; and Julie Cann Culbreth and husband, Kevin, of Lyman.  Also surviving are a sister, Patricia Dyar and her husband, Henry, of Anderson; 5 grandchildren, Hadley and Shannon Owens, Bryce Gambrell, Jarek Cann, and Tabitha Culbreth.   

Gayle was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Robert Sanders, and a grandson, Jamie Owens.

A funeral service to celebrate and honor the life of Mrs. Cann will be held on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at 2 PM at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, with Rev. Jack Mahaffey and Rev. Willie Honea officiating.  The family will be at the home of Michelle and Brian Gambrell, 300 Miriam Road, Starr, and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home Saturday, December 1, 2012, from 6 PM until 8 PM.

GUY LEE SIMPSON

March 13, 1923 – November 25, 2012

Mr. Guy Lee Simpson, age 89, of Live Oaks, Florida, passed away peacefully at Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center following a lengthy illness.  Born in Anderson, SC, he was the son of the late Wales T. Simpson and the late Mary Blanche Taylor Simpson.  

As a child growing up in Anderson, he worked hard on the family farm with his father and 11 siblings.  At the age of 16, he made the decision to join the Army and went on to fight for his country.  Mr. Simpson served in the United States Army during World War II as a corporal, where he received the Good Conduct Ribbon and Victory Medal. He then served three years in the United States Air Force with distinction as a Staff Sergeant in Japan.  The discipline and patriotism he learned in the military never left him, as friends and family will attest.  After receiving an honorable discharge, Guy opened a business on Lake Hartwell, GA.   He was a loyal and devoted son and spent much of his time caring for his mother until her death.  Later he moved to Florida where he went into hotel management until his retirement. 

Survivors include a sister, Mary Jane Simpson Campbell and 12 nephews and 11 nieces.  Preceding Mr. Simpson in death are 6 brothers, Jackson Simpson, Louie Simpson, Weldon Simpson, Marvin Simpson, Calvin Simpson and Delbert Simpson; and four sisters Hazel Simpson Lollis, Cecile Simpson Jaynes, Callie Simpson, and Sara Simpson Book. 

A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Guy Simpson will be held Saturday, December 1, 2012, at 2 PM at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, with Dr. Wendell Bannister officiating.  Interment will follow in the family plot at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Saturday from 12 Noon until 1:30 PM.  

Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center, 1601 SW Archer Road, Gainesville, FL 32608.
