JOYCE A. THOMPSON

May 13, 1943 – December 29, 2009
TOWNVILLE, SC - Joyce Ann Sasser Thompson, age 66, wife of Wayne Thompson of 107 Sapling Court, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
 
Born in Opp, Alabama on May 13, 1943, Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of the late Cody Ray Sasser and Doris Louise Currenton, she retired from Bell South as a customer service representative with twenty years of service.  She was a member of the CWA and Telephone Pioneers.
 
Survivors include her husband of the home; son, Kirk Lawrence Dockery of Williamston; daughter, Katherine Denise Caldwell of Townville; brother, Bruce L. Sasser and his wife, Jewell of Mobile, AL; sister, Jenny Starrett of Panama City, FL; seven grandchildren, Nicki Snay, Mary Roe, Justin Caldwell, Leah Dockery, Kirk Dockery, Austin Dockery and Courtney Thompson and one great-granddaughter, Georgia Faye Roe.
 
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Sequila Ann Lynn and her grandmother, who raised her, Ethel Louise Bussey.
 
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Steve Lomax.  Inurnment of her ashes will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm. The family will be at the residence.

RUSSELL D. “RUSTY” BROCK

ANDERSON – Russell Darwin Brock, 34, of 103 Meadowland Drive, husband of Melissa Gaines Brock, died Monday, December 28, 2009 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born June 26, 1975 in Anderson, he was the son of Darwin and Reba Brown Brock. He was an electrician. He was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church and attended Gethsemane Baptist Temple.

Surviving are his wife, Melissa of the home; 3 stepsons, Carlton Gillian, twins, Tony and Matt Abernathy all of the home; parents, Darwin and Reba Brock of Anderson; brother, Anthony Brock and his wife, Miranda of Charleston; sister, Melinda Wheeler and her husband, Billy of Anderson; niece, Kaylee Brock; nephew, Chris Wheeler and grandmother, Wilma Brock of Belton. He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Cecil Brock and maternal grandparents, James W. and Lula T. Brown.  

Funeral service will be held at 11am Thursday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel with the Revs. Bob Marcaurelle and Sam Duncan officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:45 Thursday prior to the service at the Northeast Chapel. The family is at the home of his parents, Darwin and Reba Brock, 205 Donaree Circle. JANUARY 29, 1921 – DECEMBER 28, 2009
 
ANDERSON, SC – Delleree Gaines Hayes, age 88, wife of the late Donnie Jenkins Hayes, passed away on Monday at NHC Healthcare.
 
Born in Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Judge Robert Gaines and Clara Craft Gaines. She retired from textiles and was a member of West Anderson Church of God.
 
Survivors include her children: Clara Moore of Anderson, Janice Johnson of Dry Fork, VA, Jerald Robert Hayes and Donnie Gene Hayes, both of Anderson; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers: Dock, Morrell, and her twin the Reverend Donolee Gaines; and sisters: Lillian, Annie Lizzie, & Macy Gaines, Mae Felker, and Louise Partridge.
 
The Funeral Service will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, conducted by the Reverend John M. Daniel and the Reverend Mark Daniel.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. ARIE E. McCOY

JANUARY 21, 1925 – DECEMBER 28, 2009
ANDERSON, SC – Frances Marie Ellison McCoy, age 84, formerly of Sheldon Drive, passed away on Monday, December 28, 2009, at the Rainey Hospice House.
 
Born in Anderson, SC, on January 21, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Carl Ellison and Eva Rogers Ellison.  She was a graduate of Anderson College and was a homemaker.  Mrs. McCoy was a member of the Anderson Garden Club and was very supportive of the Special Olympics, Area 14.  She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.
 
Survivors include her children: Brenda M. Drady of Anderson, Sylvia M. Jones and husband, Jack of Anderson, Vickie M. Fouts and husband, Sam of Atlanta, Kenneth L. McCoy and wife, Gayle of Anderson, and Roger L. McCoy of Anderson; brother, Carl Ellison of Anderson; grandchildren: Jennifer Woods, Matthew Jones, Kevin Fouts, Mark Fouts, Ashley Brooks, Captain Carl McCoy USAF, and Melody Roberts; and seven great grandchildren.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth L. McCoy, Sr.; a son, Richard M. McCoy; a grandson, Joseph McCoy; and two brothers: R.C. Ellison and Melvin Ellison.
 
The Funeral Service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Dr. Tony Smith.  A family committal service will follow in New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery.
 
The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 pm until 6:30 pm on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, and also thirty minutes prior to the funeral service on Wednesday. ANDERSON, SC - Christy Lynn Brookshire, age 34, wife of Ron Brookshire, Jr., of 513 Whitehall Road, died Sunday, December 27, 2009. Born in Anderson, SC on January 30, 1975, Christy was a daughter of Billy Grant Patterson, Jr., and Jennie Shead Meeks.  She attended Daniel High School, was a homemaker and devoted mother who volunteered many hours at Whitehall Elementary School and at her children’s many sports events.  She was a member of NewSpring Church where she was on the greeting committee.
 
Survivors include her husband; son, Jacob Alexander Brookshire; daughters, Victoria Grace Brookshire and Marie Danielle Brookshire, all of the home; parents, Billy Grant Patterson, Jr., and step-mother, Tammy Patterson and mother, Jennie Shead Meeks and step-father Tony Meeks; sisters, Michelle Anderson and Beth Huckabaa and Joy Sharpe all of Anderson; brothers, Jamie Carter of Belton and Michael Carter of Hartwell; grandmothers, Frances Shead, Jeannette Patterson; Joyce Graham and Jane Meeks; father and mother-in-law, Ron Brookshire, Sr., and Ann Brookshire.
 
She was predeceased by her grandfathers, Willie Shead, Bill Patterson, Buddy Graham, and Charles T. Meeks.
 
The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Jake Beaty and Dr. Wendell Bannister.  Interment will follow in Old Silver Brook Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

ANDERSON, SC – Edith Chappelear Gambrell, age 87, wife of the late Weston B. Gambrell, passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2009, at NHC Healthcare of Anderson.
 
Born in Belton, SC, on May 28, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Jones Bonner Chappelear and Lola Simpson Chappelear.  She was a graduate of Belton High School and at the age of seventy-five retired as a Retail Clerk – having been employed by the Hallmark Shop in the Anderson Mall.  Mrs. Gambrell was a member of Pope Drive Baptist Church.
 
Survivors include her children: Judy Collins and husband, Doug of Spartanburg, SC, Steve Gambrell and wife, Fran of Spartanburg, SC, and Peggy Wright of Anderson, SC; sister, Libby Hendrix and husband, Don of Anderson, SC; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, J.B. Chappelear; and sisters: Gladys Lankford, Winnie King, Pearl Harper, and Betty Peterson.
 
A Graveside Service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, conducted by the Reverend Mack Tester. The family is at the home of Don & Libby Hendrix, 508 Drayton Circle, and will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the graveside service.

ANDERSON, SC – Chloe Olivia Mitchell, beautiful two year old daughter of Nathan & Patsy Mitchell, passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2009, at home.
 
Born in Anderson, SC, on October 5, 2007, she is survived by her loving parents; her twin siblings, Cody Blake Mitchell & Carson Riley Mitchell; maternal grandparents, Ray & Sue Hart; paternal grandfather, Charles Edward Mitchell; and great grandparents: Hazel Mosley, Sam Hart, and Joan Roach.
 
Her paternal grandmother, Hazel Anita Mitchell, preceded her in death.

WILLIAM C. YATES, JR

NOVEMBER 21, 1923 – DECEMBER 23, 2009
ANDERSON, SC -- Services for William Clyde Yates Jr., 86, will be held at 1 pm Tuesday, December 29, 2009, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, with committal with Military Honors at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 12 pm at the funeral home.  The Reverend Dr. Jack Couch will conduct the services.
Mr. Yates passed away early in the morning Wednesday, December 23, 2009. Born on November 21, 1923 in E. St. Louis, Ill., he was a son of the late William Clyde Yates Sr. and Mary Teresa Beecher Yates. He served his country in World War II in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific Theater as Quartermaster aboard the USS Cuttlefish. After the war he served briefly in the U.S. Border Patrol, then returned to his home state and attended Western Illinois University on the GI Bill, obtaining bachelors and masters degrees in chemistry. After a brief stint teaching chemistry and general science in Illinois public schools, he went into private industry. He did chemical marketing research for Phillips Petroleum and Cities Service oil companies, eventually moving with his family to the Atlanta area in 1965. He retired in 1983, dabbled briefly in real estate, then moving with his wife to Anderson in 1987.
He remained involved with World War II Veterans groups and Submarine Veterans groups. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Navy League of the United States, and U.S Submarine Veterans Holland Club. He served as S.C. State Commander of Submarine Veterans of World War II for five years (1995 through 2000), and was Public Affairs Officer in the National Office in 2000. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Hejaz Shrine Club.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Alice Mae Belles Yates of Anderson; brother, Robert W. Yates of Springfield, Ill.; son, Dr. Steven Yates of Greenville (formerly of Columbia); daughter and son-in-law, Leigh Ann Yates-Brown and Stephen Brown of Woodstock, Ga.; grandchildren, Justin and Dylan Henry of Woodstock; sister-in-law, Verna Winterbottom of Greenville; brother-in-law, Gene Belles of Davenport, Ia.; niece, Kathy Laurens and her husband Dr. Richard Laurens of Greer and their children; nephews Brent Winterbottom of Columbia and Robert Winterbottom of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

ANDERSON, SC – Sallie Bowes Burr, age 83, formerly of Stewart Street, passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2009, at Regional Hospice, located in Spartanburg, SC.
 
Born in Caswell County, NC, on January 17, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Robert A. Bowes and Bertha Cobb Bowes.   Mrs. Burr retired from Sterlor Manufacturing and was a member of Mountain Creek Baptist Church.
 
Survivors include her daughter, Joan Smith of Chesnee, SC; her sons: Wallace Aldridge of Leasburg, NC, and Randy Aldridge of Prospect Hill, NC; sister, Fannie B. Winstead of Yanceyville, NC; six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Her parents; her husband, Gene Milton Burr; and one sister, Bessie Shaw, predeceased her.
 
A Graveside Service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family is at their respective homes.

Maude Powell

Anderson- Margaret Maude Fountain Powell, age 89,of 109 Farmer St, wife of the late Willie Otis Powell, passed away on Friday, December 25, 2009, at AnMed Health Medical Center.
 
Born in Hartwell GA., on April 19,1920, she was the daughter of the late James Ira Fountain and Lena Jordan Fountain.  Mrs. Powell worked in textiles at the Abbey Mills for many years.  She was formally a member  Osborne Ave. Church of God; she had  attended  Trinity Spring Church of God.
 
Survivors include her children: James Powell and his wife Linda, Wayne Powell and his wife Patricia, all of Anderson, Margaret Burdette of Cannon GA., Mary Crocker of Anderson, fourteen grandchildren, three grandchildren raised in the home, Teresa Cruz and her husband Eddy, Denise Standridge and her husband James, Lisa Brown and her husband Lamar Bryant, thirty-five great grandchildren, two great-grandchildren raised in the home, Sheron Barnes, Bryan Vaughn, and twenty-nine great-great grandchildren. Her grandsons will serve has Pallbearers.
 
She was predeceased by her parents; husband, one grandson, Donnie Ricketts, three brothers, one sister.  She was the last member of her immediate family. The Funeral Service will be held at 2 pm on Monday, December 28, 2009, in  the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, conducted by the Reverend James Patterson.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friend at the funeral home on Sunday December 27, 2009 from 6pm – 8pm. The family will be at their respective homes.

ANDERSON, SC – Mary Joan Burriss Rhodes, age 78, wife of the late Walter Lee Rhodes, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2009, at the Rainey Hospice House.
 
Born in Anderson, SC, on April 10, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Burriss and Annie Mae Elrod Burriss.  Following a banking career, she was a homemaker.  Mrs. Rhodes was of the Baptist faith.
 
Survivors include grandchildren: Justin Rhodes and wife, Christy, Brandon Rhodes and wife, Leah, Holly Franklin, and Preston Franklin; and one great granddaughter, Kaitlyn Rhodes.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, David Michael Rhodes and Stephen Gra Rhodes; and one brother, Thomas Henry Burriss.
 
A Graveside Service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, conducted by the Reverend Steve Silvey.   The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service.

SARA BRYANT

ANDERSON – Sara Doris Bryant, 77, of Wil-Mary Apartments, died Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born October 9, 1932 in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late E. Crayton and Sue Culbertson Bryant. She was a retired caregiver and was a member of Salem Baptist Church.

Survivors include her brother, Ben C. Bryant of Anderson; three sisters, Beth Brown and Laura Martin, both of Anderson, and Jane Cox of Laurens; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Downtown Chapel, conducted by Dr. Charles E. Holland. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the mortuary following the service. Family members are at their respective homes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church, P.O.
