Dorothy Smith

Dorothy ‘Dot’ Vernon Smith Smith, of Anderson, died Sunday, March 8, 2015, at the home of her daughter in Asheville, NC, aged 99 years, 10 and a half months.

She was born on April 21, 1915, at the family farm on the banks of the Tugaloo River near Fair Play, Oconee County, SC.  Her parents were the late Edmund Kirby Smith Sr. and Annie Elizabeth Stamps Smith.  She was married to the late Charles Spurgeon Smith, who died May 10, 1980, in Anderson.

She was also predeceased by two brothers and two sisters: Harvey Richard Smith Sr., Edmund Kirby Smith Jr., Vivian Smith and Julia Kelley Smith Meeks.  She was also predeceased by her beloved granddaughter, Susan Mia Smith Kadala. 

She is survived by her baby sister, Mary Angie Smith Slonim of Falls Church, VA. She is also survived by her five children: Elizabeth Ann Smith Fasting and her husband, Roger, of Asheville, NC, Charles Stephen Smith and his wife, Cara, of Blythewood, SC, Walter George Smith and his wife, Nancy, of Belton, SC, Dorothy Susan Smith Kadala and her husband, Phil, of Wilmington, NC, and Julia Cecile Smith Barham and her husband, Jim, of Asheville, NC. She has 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  

Dorothy lived most of her life in Anderson County.  She and her husband operated Smith’s Gulf Station at the corner of Fant and Whitner Streets in Anderson for many years.  She was a member of Eureka Baptist Church, Anderson, for more than 65 years.  

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 13, at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Anderson.  The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at Eureka Baptist Church, Anderson.  Conducting the service will be the Rev. Robert Dickard and Dr. T. Jason Moss.  

The family will be at the home of Walter and Nancy Smith, Belton. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of one’s choice or to Eureka Baptist Church.
