Hazel Elrod

Anderson, SC - Hazel Elrod joined her sister, Ruth Elrod, and brother, James Thomas Elrod in heaven on September 14, 2014. She was 93 years old. She leaves behind friends, neighbors, students, and her beloved cat, Cutie. Special friends, Ronnie and Donna Fowler survive her.

Hazel lived all of her life in the Flat Rock community, residing in the house that her father built in 1915. She and her family worked on the farm, growing cotton, corn, wheat, oats, and vegetables. Hazel attended elementary school at the old Flat Rock Elementary School and later taught there. She received her Associate Degree from Anderson College and her Bachelor’s Degree from Erskine College.

Hazel began her teaching career in the 40’s, teaching first and second grade at the old Flat Rock School. She then taught first grade at Starr Elementary School, completing her career there. Her teaching career spanned 44 years. She was a member of Flat Rock Presbyterian Church.

Hazel will be remembered for her strong love for her family and farm, as well as her love for animals. She mothered many dogs, cats, and peacocks over the years. Hazel once nursed a wounded red hawk back to health, named him Speck and helped him to fly again. Hazel will also be remembered for her generosity, stoicism, and tenacity.

The Fowlers would like to give a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Exalted Health and Rehab of Iva for the care provided to Hazel over the last few weeks, as well as to Ark Hospice. A special thanks to Kaye Vaughn for the kind and compassionate care that she provided to Hazel in recent years.

In keeping with Hazel’s wishes, no services are planned. Please remember her by making a donation to the Anderson Free Clinic, P.O. Box 728, Anderson, SC 29622.
