Clemson to Host One-Act Play Festival

Join the Clemson Players and the performing arts department as they present a One-Act Play Festival April 16-April 21, in the Bellamy Theatre at Clemson University’s Brooks Center for the Performing Arts.

Directed, designed and acted by students, the two plays represented in the festival will be "Hotel Cassiopeia" by Charles L. Mee and "For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls" by Christopher Durang.

Director Josh Carter, a junior from North Augusta, describes "Hotel Cassiopeia" as “a theatrical collage composed of elements from the artistic work of Joseph Cornell, including ballerinas, clocks with no hands, an astronomer and Humphrey Bogart." Set in a New York cafeteria, the play takes place inside Cornell's mind as he gets lost in his own fantasies while eavesdropping on the eccentric people around him.

"For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls" is a twist on the classic Tennessee Williams play "The Glass Menagerie." The play’s character, Amanda, attempts to shove her over-sensitive, hypochondriac son onto a “feminine caller” from the warehouse where her other son works. “This parody by Durang presents relatable parent-child tensions,” said director Gabby Norris, a junior from Travelers Rest. “It begs the questions of if and when you can leave your family behind.”

Performances on April 16-20 will start at 8 p.m. and the April 21 performance will be a Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. Tickets are $11 for adults and $6 for students and are available for purchase online at www.clemson.edu/Brooks and through the box office at 864-656-7787 from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
