FRANK CROSBY MURPHEY

June 20, 1930 - September 27, 2013

Frank Crosby Murphey, 83, passed away on Friday, September 27, 2013, at his home in Anderson, South Carolina.

Frank was born on June 20, 1930, in Aiken, South Carolina, to Paul Early Murphey and Bruce Crosby Murphey. Growing up on James Island, Frank fell in love with the game of golf at a very young age while caddying at the Charleston Municipal Golf Club. In 1944, Frank’s family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Frank graduated from Central High School in Charlotte in 1947 and from Duke University in 1952. Frank enlisted in the U.S. Army in October, 1952, and served for two years during the Korean War. In February, 1953, Frank married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Anne Johnston. They lived in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Winston-Salem, NC, before settling in Columbia, SC, in 1972. Dorothy passed away in 1997. In February of 2013, Frank moved to Anderson, SC, to live closer to his daughters and grandchildren.

Over the years, Frank was Executive Vice President of N.G. Spier, Senior Vice President at Wachovia Bank, Senior Vice President of South Carolina National Bank in Columbia, President of R.L. Bryan Company in Columbia, and President of SeaBank in Myrtle Beach. In the past, Frank served on the advisory boards of Clemson University and of Columbia College. Additionally, he was Past-President of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce and Past-President of Spring Valley Country Club in Columbia. Frank was an avid golfer for over 70 years.

Frank Murphey was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Johnston Murphey, two brothers, Bob Murphey and Paul Murphey, and his parents, Paul and Bruce Murphey. He is survived by three daughters: Laura M. Fastenau, and her husband, John, of Honea Path, SC; Janice M. Walpole, and her husband Philip, of Williamston, SC; and Marian Murphey of Las Vegas, NV. In addition, he is survived by twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A private, family, graveside service was held on Sunday, September 29, 2013, conducted by the Reverend John Fastenau. The family respectfully requests that memorials be made to Calvary Home for Children, 110 Calvary Home Circle, Anderson, SC 29621, a ministry that Frank loved dearly over the past decade.

I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes -- I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!
Job 19:25-27
