GORDON J. BRUEGL

FEBRUARY 18, 1922 - OCTOBER 15, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Gordon Joseph Bruegl, age 89, former resident of 126 Reed Place, passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born February 18, 1922, in Medford, WI, he was a son of the late Louis Bruegl and Alice Cullen Bruegl.    He was a 42’ graduate of Medford High School and was inducted into the US Army in December of 42’. Following his honorable discharge in Frankfurt, West Germany, he accepted Federal employment there and in 48’ joined the U.S. Foreign Service. While residing in Frankfurt, he met his beloved late wife Olga Oostermeyer Bruegl, a Belgian national who worked for the U.S. Army. Together, they served at the following U.S. embassies: Bonn, West Germany, Budapest, London, Tehran, Saigon, Geneva, and Bangkok.  Mr. Bruegl commented many times, “it has been a wonderful, exciting, challenging, rewarding, and sometimes a dangerous life in the Foreign Service. My twenty plus years of retirement in Anderson was a just a reward!”  Mr. Bruegl was a member of the First Baptist Church of Anderson.

Mr. Bruegl is survived by his sister, Florence Layton of W. LaFayette, IN, and a host of beloved and cherished friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by brothers: Laurence Bruegl, Vern Bruegl, and Robert Bruegl; and sisters: Delores Kuenne, Evelyn Powell, Norma Lorbeski, Joyce Bradley, and Doris Papes. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Monday, October 17, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. James R. Thomason.  Burial with military honors will follow in M.J. ‘Dolly’ Cooper Veterans Cemetery.  A visitation will be held for friends one hour prior to the funeral service.
