HARRISON POORE

ANDERSON, SC – William Harrison Poore, age 87, husband of seventy years to the late Sara Catherine Poore, passed away at the Rainey Hospice House on Tuesday, October 19, 2010.
Mr. Poore served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific Campaign earning four medals of Honor. He was one of the first groups of soldiers that were deployed to Hiroshima Japan after the Atomic Bomb Mission. He was also a member of the Air National Guard Reserves and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis in Miami, FL. Mr. Poore was a member of the City of Anderson Police Department starting work in 1948 as a motorcycle policeman and earning his way through the ranks to become Chief of the Traffic Division. Mr. Poore was a member of McDuffie Street Church of God where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and eventually became the Director of the Sunday School Department. Mr. Poore, along with his wife then became charter members of High Praises Church of God. They were both dedicated Christians who always put God, Faith, and Family first. Captain Poore, as he was known as a police officer, was well respected by all who knew him throughout the Anderson community. He leaves a legacy that will be passed down for generations to come.
He is survived by his son, Melvin Poore and his wife, Nancy; grandson, Coach Brad Poore and wife, Renee, and great grandson, Elijah Bradley Poore; granddaughter, Libby Bonds and great grandchildren, Parker & Caroline Bonds; and one sister, Beatrice Martin, all of Anderson. Mr. Poore was predeceased in death by five brothers: Ollie, Joe, Haskell, Fred, and John Poore; and six sisters: Janie Coker, Gussie Shirley, Ruth Black, Sara Snelgrove, Gertrude Fowler, and Mildred Martin.
The Funeral Service will be held at 4pm on Thursday, October 21, 2010, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, conducted by the Reverend Chris Sustar. Entombment with Military Honors by the US Army will follow in the Rosewood Mausoleum of Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
The family is at the home of Melvin & Nancy Poore, 204 Bowen Road, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Wednesday.
