David Beasley Gets Official Nod to Head UN Food Program

Former South Carolina Gov. David Beasley has been appointed to head the U.N. World Food Program, the largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide.

Beasley is a supporter of President Donald Trump who was recommended for the job by U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley. The ambassador left her own job as South Carolina governor to take the U.N. post.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Food and Agriculture Organization Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva announced Beasley's appointment Wednesday. He'll succeed Ertharin Cousin, who has led the Rome-based agency since April 2012.

U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said that since leaving office in 1999, Beasley has traveled to over 75 countries and war-stricken regions "leading peace-building missions and development efforts through working with foreign leaders."
