New S.C. Moped Laws to Begin Next Summer

Starting next year, moped drivers in South Carolina will face tougher restrictions under a new state law which will go into effect July 1, 2017. 

Mopeds will then require registration with the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Currently, mopeds aren't classified as "motor vehicles." Therefore, drivers are not required to have a license and are not subject to DUI laws.

In addition to the registration requirement, moped drivers who don't have a regular driver's license must obtain a special moped operator's license and will be required to wear reflective vests will operation the vehicle. Drivers and passengers under 21 will be required to wear helmets.

Officials with the South Carolina Department of Public Safety say the new requirements will save lives. Sixteen people have died in moped crashes this year, according to Lt. Kelley Hughes. Last year, 50 people were killed in moped-related accidents.
