Amanda Thomas, a senior at T.L. Hanna High School who volunteers for Safe Harbor, a women’s shelter, is one of only two students in the state to win the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Award.
The award is given to the state’s top youth volunteers. As part of her award, Amanda was presented with an engraved Prudential Spirit of Community silver medallion. Also, from April 30 to May 3, she traveled to Washington, D.C. along with the other 101 state honorees for several days of special recognition events. There, Amanda and the other honorees received $1,000.
Based on the number of volunteer hours Amanda has accumulated, she also qualified for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. Amanda received the President’s Award and a letter from President Obama for earning this honor.
