MARY NELL RHODES

June 24, 1919 – December 2, 2011

Anderson, SC - Mrs. Mary Nell Turner Rhodes, 92, of 3856 Centerville Road died Friday, December 02, 2011, following a lengthy illness.  She was the daughter of the Late John F. and Minnie Lee Hilley Turner.   Mrs. Rhodes was a member of the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church where she was active in  the Faith Sunday School Class as long as her health permitted.  

Along with her husband, the Late William “Bill” Rhodes who died in 1981, Mrs. Rhodes ran the Rhodes Grocery Store on Highway 187 in Anderson.  Among her hobbies and special interests, Mary loved to sew and did alternations at McCall’s Men’s Shop.  She was also a homemaker. 

Survivors include  two sons, Tommy Lee Rhodes  (Alice) and Andy Rhodes (Violet), both of Anderson; two daughters, Patricia Rhodes Craft (Hugh) of Lexington, SC, and Janice Rhodes Graham (Lane) of Anderson, five grandchildren, Mike Craft, Sherri Burriss, Jason Rhodes, Shane Graham, and Brandon Graham.  Also surviving are six great grandchildren.   

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Rhodes was predeceased by her brothers; James and Fred Turner; three sisters, Grace Turner Hinkle, Louise Turner Webb and Beatrice McLeskey;  one grandchild, Chad Rhodes. 

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2011, at 2 PM at the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, with Rev. Mike McCormick and Rev. Jack Mahaffey officiating.  Interment will follow at the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery. 

 The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 5 PM – 7 PM and will be at the home of Janice Graham, 3856 Centerville Road, Anderson.  

Flowers are optional, and Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, 5901 Highway 187, Anderson, SC 29625.

CAROLYN LOCKE CHASTAIN

November 23, 1934 – November 30, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC - Carolyn Locke Chastain, 77 of Anderson, SC, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

She was a faithful member of Forest Hill Baptist Church and the Esther Sunday School class.  She retired from Kroger Bakery (formerly American Bakery) where she worked in administration and accounting for over 40 years. 

Survivors include her sister; Sandra Locke Vickery and her husband, Bill; a sister-in-law, Frances Simpson all of Anderson; a brother-in-law, Jerome Poole of Charlotte, NC; nephews, Joshua Vickery of Fountain Inn, Randy, Reed and Ross Poole of Charlotte, NC, Dury Simpson and Wayne Selman of Anderson; nieces, Michelle Wilson and Janice Ross of Anderson, Mellie McClellan of Charlotte, NC and Gail Yarborough of Charleston, SC.  She also had several grandnephews and grandnieces. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Marshall Chastain; her parents O. C. and Carrie Lee Locke and a sister, Linda Locke Poole.

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 11:30 am in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Rev. Tom Owen.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  The Esther Sunday School Class will serve as Honorary Escort. 

The family will be at the home of her sister, Sandra Vickery, and will receive friends at funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 am until 11:15 am.

OLLIE B. SHORE

NOVEMBER 22, 1916 – NOVEMBER 30, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Mary Ollie Brown Shore, age 95, resident of NHC Healthcare, passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2011. 

Born November 22, 1916, in Hart County, GA, she was a daughter of the late Lawson Brown and Cola Howell Brown. She retired from Bobbie Dan Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. 

She is survived by her daughter, Diane S. Moore and husband, Stanley, of Anderson, SC; sisters: Josephine Reed and Doris Strickland, both of Anderson, SC; brother, Joe Brown of Anderson, SC; grandchildren: Christy Moore, Misty McConnell, Terry Shore, and Craig Shore; three great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Luther S. Shore; her son, Larry S. Shore; sisters: Sue Neese and Betty Brown; and brothers: Evoid, Emmitt, and Tom Brown. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, December 3, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Glenn Taylor and the Reverend D. Chad McConnell. Interment will follow in New Silver Brook Cemetery. 

The family is at the home of Stanley & Diane Moore and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6pm until 8pm on Friday.

ROBERT “BOB” EDGAR

February 27, 1925 – November 28, 2011

ANDERSON, SC  - Robert “Bob” Lee Edgar, age 86, formerly of Anderson, died Monday, November 28, 2011 at Hart Care Center in Hartwell.

Born in Townville, SC, he was the son of the late Robert Clyde Edgar and Drucie Robertson Edgar.  Mr. Edgar retired from Wellington Mill with 40 years of service.  He was a Mason and a member of Varennes Heights Baptist Church. 

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pauline Rhodes Edgar; daughter, Janice Ashworth and her husband, Thomas; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Audrey Pepper.  

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 12:30 pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.   

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday from 11:00 am until 12:00 noon.

SAMUEL A. ELGIN

OCTOBER 6, 1926 – NOVEMBER 30, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Samuel Ansel Elgin, age 85, beloved husband of Jamie McCoy Elgin, passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born October 6, 1926, in the Neals Creek Community of Anderson County, he was a son of the late Frank Roy Elgin and Susie McGill Elgin.  He was a graduate of Anderson Boys’ High School and was the owner of Custom Welding. Mr. Elgin was an avid gardener who enjoyed growing a variety of roses. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Jamie McCoy Elgin; sons: James Samuel Elgin and wife, Judy, of Hartsville, SC, Steven Ansel Elgin of Anderson, SC, William Eldon Elgin and wife, Debra, of Anderson, SC, and Bruce Edward Elgin and wife, Paula, of Anderson, SC; sisters: Martha Evatt of Anderson, SC, and Frances Simmons of Gainesville, FL; brothers: John Elgin of Cody, WY, and Fred Elgin of Hendersonville, NC; nine grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers: Raymond, Frank, David, and Daniel Elgin; and a sister at birth, Virginia Elgin. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, December 2, 2011, in the Mausoleum Chapel of Forest Lawn Memorial Park conducted by the Reverend Wayne Watson.  The family will receive visitors immediately following the service.

BURRELL McCURRY

DECEMBER 12, 1939 – NOVEMBER 27, 2011 

IVA, SC –Charlie Burrell McCurry, age 71, of 201 Craft Street, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born December 12, 1939, in Lowndesville, SC, he was a son of the late June L. McCurry & Lula Evans McCurry.  After graduating Crescent High School, Mr. McCurry entered into the United States Air Force where he served during the Vietnam Era.  He was a True Temper retiree and was an avid writer of poetry as well as musical lyrics.

He is survived by his brother, Bill McCurry of Iva, SC; his sisters: Georgia M. Gray of Seneca, SC, and Doris M. Smith of Iva, SC; five nieces, and two nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Jack McCurry.

The Funeral Service will be held at 3pm on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Rudy Gray. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30pm until 2:30pm, prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Iva City Cemetery.

EDITH BRYANT MEDLOCK

October 1, 1938 – November 27, 2011  

ANDERSON, SC - Mrs. Edith “Peggy” Bryant Medlock, age 73, of Beachwood Parkway died Sunday, November 27, 2011, at the Fellowship Health and Rehabilitation Center.  She was the daughter of the late Willie E.  and Jose Phillips Bryant.   Peggy was married for forty-seven years to her husband, the late William Ansel Medlock.

Survivors include a son, David A. Medlock of Belton; a brother, Jimmy Bryant of Ware Shoals, and a sister, Wanda “Vickie” Breedlove of Missouri.  Also surviving are two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.    In addition to her parents, Mrs. Medlock was predeceased by a daughter, Tammy Brown; a brother, David Bryant; and sisters, Katherine Hopkins, Geraldine Bryant Alexander, and Rose Grant.  

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at 3:30 PM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Whitt officiating.  Interment will follow at The Garden of Memories in Belton.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 PM to 8 PM.

SHIRLEY BUTTON

January 17, 1936 – November 21, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Shirley Marie Olson Button, age 75, of 1112 Green Acres, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2011 at her residence.

Born in Gardner, Illinois on January 17, 1936, Mrs. Button was the daughter of the late Carl Olson and Lucille Marie Sorenson Olson.  She was a graduate of Morris High School in Morris, Illinois and moved to Melbourne, Florida where she worked for Tri-Co Home Health Agency as a Human Resource Agent.  She moved to Asheville, NC, where she worked for the Highland Farm Retirement Center before later moving to Anderson, SC.  

Survivors include her son, Doug Button and his wife, Dede of Southpoint, Ohio; daughters, Diana Gootee and her husband, Jay of Coral Springs, FL and Kristina Harder and her husband, Steven of Anderson; brother, Bob Olson and his wife, Marge of Sterling, IL; seven grandchildren, Chad Gootee, Jennifer Gootee, Dominique Harder, Andrea Button, Mathew Button, Emilee Button and Steven Harder and one great-granddaughter, Leigha Marie Button.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 4:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by Chaplain Don Owens.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service.

ROSE EVANS LAWRENCE  

SEPTEMBER 19, 1921 – NOVEMBER 26, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC – Rose Evans Lawrence, age 90, resident of Bellaire Place Assisted Living, Greenville, SC, wife of the late Hubert Lee Lawrence, passed away on November 26, 2011, at the McCall Hospice House. 

Born September 19, 1921, in Cornelia, GA, she was a daughter of the late Kate Evans. During WWII she worked at Dobbins Air Force Base assembling airplanes and she also worked as a nurse in Baltimore, Maryland. Later moved to Anderson, and worked at the Third Generation, and Anesco Company, as a seamstress.  She was a member of Orrville Baptist Church and a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by a daughter, Nena Barnett and her husband, Randy, of Simpsonville, SC; sisters: Maggie Evans of Mount Airy, GA, Janie Lomax of Lawrenceville, GA,  Betty Latham of Mount Airy, GA; grandchildren: Diane Stryker, Dana Lawrence, Kayte Elliott, Adam Burgess, Ashley Beam, Katie Pennington, and Adam Barnett; and ten great grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a step-son, Tommy Lawrence; brothers: Bill Evans, Cliford Evans, and Claude Evans. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Wendell Bannister.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

ANDERSON, SC - Shirley Jean Horne Wooten, age 65, of 3549 Keys Street, wife of the late Bobby Larry Wooten, passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2011, at her residence.

Born November 30, 1945, in Anderson, SC, she was a daughter of the late Mammie Sue Horne.

She was retired from Wamsutta Plant, Spring Industries, where she worked for many years.  She was a member of Trinity Spring Church of God and taught the children’s Sunday school for many years.            

She is survived by her sons: Larry Wooten of Iva, SC, Scottie Wooten and his wife, Louise, of Starr , SC; grandchildren: Christopher Colley and Jonathon Holley; great-grandchildren: Braydon Colley and Tucker Colley. In addition to her husband and mother, she was predeceased by her aunt and uncle, Annie Mae and Oscar “Nip” Roach. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 30,2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend James Patterson and Reverend Scott Vaughn.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. ROBERT A. WHITE SR.

JULY 22, 1929 – NOVEMBER 27, 2011

ANDERSON, SC –Robert ‘Bob’ Allen White Sr., age 82, resident of 2307 Lane Avenue, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2011, at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson. 

Born July 22, 1929, in Spartanburg, SC, he was a son of the late Augustus Ruben White and Esther Allen White.  His lengthy career with the State of South Carolina was comprised of four years as a State Trooper and thirty-five years with the Alcohol Beverage Control Division having retired at the rank of Captain.  Mr. White was a member of the South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police, the South Carolina Sheriff’s Association, and the Anderson Elks Lodge.  Additionally, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Anderson.

He is survived by his wife, Amanda “Peggy” Poole White, of the home; son, Robert A. White Jr. and wife, Angela, of Anderson, SC; daughter, Esther White Sorensen, of Starr, SC; sisters: Evelyn W. Cooper of Inman, SC, and Polly W. Murphy of Seneca, SC; grandchildren: Ryan White and wife, April, Kelly Hawkins and husband, Russell, Katherine Sorensen, and Cpl. Christopher Sorensen USMC and wife, Briana; and five great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Agnes W. Smith; and a brother, W. Calvin White.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:30am on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Dr. James R. Thomason and the Reverend Samuel Clinkscales.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

JAMES “JIM” HUNT, SR.

June 19, 1921 – November 25, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - James “Jim” Clifford Hunt, Sr., age 90, husband of Mary Moore Hunt of Anderson, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2011, at the NHC HealthCare in Anderson. 

Born in Townville, SC on June 19, 1921, Mr. Hunt was a son of the late Clifford Hunt and Fannie Matt Stovall Hunt.  He was a graduate of Townville High School and retired from Frank Distribution Company with 45 years of service.  He was a member of the Hiram Masonic Lodge and a member of Townville Baptist Church. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Jimmy Hunt, Jr., and his wife, Cathy of Kings Mountain, NC and Dale Hunt and his wife, Jan of Anderson; daughters, Ann Pierce and her husband, Rickey of Anderson and Kay H. Thrasher and her husband, Matt of Pendleton; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  

He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Hunt; a sister, Mary Frances Hunt and a granddaughter, Jamey Hunt. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Gordon Taylor.  Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the home of his daughter, Kay Thrasher, 1217 Marett Road, Pendleton, SC and will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm.
