Jack Edward McGill, Sr.

Jack Edward McGill, Sr., 92 of Anderson, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his family.   

Born in Shelby, NC in 1922 to the late Mamie Sue Kuykendall McGill and John Elford McGill, he was raised in Simpsonville, SC.  For 61 years, he was the husband of the late Elizabeth Wherry McGill.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II; seeing battle in the South Pacific aboard the USS Corregidor.  He loved sports, and played textile baseball in Greenville and Slater as a young man; was an avid golfer and Clemson fan.  He was an IPTAY member of Clemson University and enjoyed playing at the Madren Center for many years.  

After his military service, his entire professional life involved a career in the field of textiles; mostly in the Carolinas starting with Judson Mills as a young man, then with JP Stevens (SC, Ohio, and Japan), Clark-Schwebel, and retiring as Plant Manager from Anderson Textiles.  He never met a stranger, had a zest for life, believed in hard work, and will always be remembered for his singing.  

He is survived by a son, Jack McGill, Jr. and his wife Susan of Taylors; a daughter, Deedy McGill Rogers of Suffolk, VA; a son-in-law, Bruce Franklin; his companion and angel, Mary Carter of Anderson, and her children, Janet Farmer and husband, James and Ryan Carter.  He also leaves behind a granddaughter, Elizabeth Rogers Joyner and husband David, of Suffolk, VA, and grandsons, Chad McGill and his wife, Kristie of Greenville, and Chris Franklin of Anderson, and Mary’s grandchildren, Krystal, Chris, Josie, Cole and Brandi; and great-children, Ava, Jack Elliott, Elijah and Reid.  His youngest sister and brother also survive, Barbara McGill McCulley and Philip McGill, along with his wife Rachael, all of Simpsonville; also, one brother-in-law Macon Wherry along with his wife Alice of Memphis, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also predeceased by his daughter, Cynthia McGill Franklin.  In addition,  he was also preceded in death by four bothers and three sisters, Walter (infant), Fred of Greenville, William of Dallas, TX, and Joe of Gray Court, Gaynelle Brown, Juanita Fuller, and Faye Chandler and her husband Harry, all of Simpsonville.

Graveside services will be held 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Bob Marcaurelle and Rev. Randy Blank. Military honors will be provided by the Upstate Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Sunday at Sullivan-King Mortuary. The family is at the residence. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 4124 Clemson Boulevard, Suite L, Anderson, SC 29621 or to the Cancer Association of Anderson, 215 East Calhoun Street, Anderson, SC 29621.
