Joe Crudup

June 3, 1925 – October 28, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Josiah Crudup, Jr., age 86, passed away peacefully at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Dalton, GA, Joe was the son of the late Dr. Josiah Crudup and Boots Caylor Crudup.  A native of Macon, GA, he was a graduate of Lanier High School.  During WWII he proudly served his country in the Pacific as an officer in the United States Navy. After the war he came back to the states where he graduated from Mercer University and pursued a Masters degree at the University of Georgia. Following in the family tradition, Joe was member of Kappa Alpha Order.

In 1949, Joe met Alice Hochuli and after a brief courtship they were married on October 22, 1949. After working as an area salesman for Texaco he moved to Anderson in 1960 where he founded Crudup Oil Company.  A faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, Joe served as a deacon.  He was involved in many organizations throughout his life; as a board member of the Salvation Army Boy’s Club and the Golden K Kiwanis. He was also a director of the First Federal Savings and Loan. Joe was an avid golfer and active member of the Anderson Country Club. He enjoyed his time as a member of the YMCA water aerobics class, the Town House Coffee Club, and the Thursday Club. Joe loved his church, his friends, his children and grandchildren, but he was especially devoted to his wife.

Joe is survived by his loving wife; of sixty-two years, Alice Hochuli Crudup; his son, Josiah Crudup, III and his wife, Elliott, daughters Susan Buckner and her husband, Mike, and Sallie Hickam and her husband, Vince; his grandchildren, Whitney Hickam, Caylor Hickam Harrison and her husband, John David, Andrew Hickam, Meg Buckner, Pearce and Alston Crudup.

In addition to his parents, Joe is predeceased by his brother John Newton Crudup, and a son-in-law Richard Esco Leopard.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Sunday, October 30, 2011, from 4:00 until 6:00 PM. Following a private family Committal Service, a Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Monday, October 31, 2011 at 2:00PM officiated by the Reverend Dr. Dennis R. Tedder and the Reverend Caroline East Berardi.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 302 Whitner Street, Anderson, SC 29624; Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621; or to a local Anderson charity of one’s choice.
