RAY WACTOR

ANDERSON- William Ray Wactor, 75, of Anderson, died June 12, 2010 following a brief illness.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Nancy Wactor and two daughters: Nan Tompkin and husband, Adrian and Lisa Gunter of Greer. He was a devoted “Buck” to his four grandchildren, Drew Sherard and his wife, Ashley, Callie Sherard, Maloy and Cameron Gunter. He was a proud great grandfather to Drew’s son, Avery. He is also survived by a sister, Autie Smoak of Orangeburg and her three children: Kathy, Jeff and Mark.

Ray grew up in Orangeburg, SC where his parents operated a general store. He graduated from Orangeburg High School and was a 1957 graduate of Clemson College with a Chemical Engineering Degree. He left the engineering field to become a creative and meticulous homebuilder. He built a legacy of beautiful homes and happy homeowners around the Atlanta Athletic Club and other areas of north Fulton County and suburban Atlanta.

Ray was a dedicated Clemson fan, golfer, pipe smoker, formidable card player and the king of crossword whizzes, a Rotarian and a lover of the beach and good steaks. He will long be remembered for his rendition of “Oh, Lord, It’s Hard to be Humble”. It was his devotion to his wife and daughters and their families that clearly identified him. A longtime member of the Atlanta Athletic Club, he leaves behind many cherished friends there and elsewhere.

Ray and Nancy lived in Habersham County, Georgia for 12 years. Since moving to Anderson in 2007, they have been faithful members of Grace Episcopal Church.

A gathering to celebrate Ray’s life will be held at Grace Episcopal Church from 12:00-1:30 PM Wednesday June 16, 2010 with a memorial service to follow at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 711 S. McDuffie St., Anderson, SC 29624 or Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
